So I thought hmm I'll try the Ogre battle current remake of the 2nd game as on platforms can access. So no nostalgia at all/aware of original's design/changes, going blind.
So while yes a lengthy intro, some context. Now onto the game actually reviewing.
To me it's cool to experience & still very old (not in a bad way I like old.games mechanics & use old platforms) & very surpisringi in design from the quality of life of other games I've played.
So I have no idea what is quality of life in this remake to make it different from the SNES/PS1 version to the PSP & current version.
First the design decisions I can pick out as a newcomer, I have no idea what were changes from entry/remakes at all. So to me the awkward design differences from other games in the genre was noticeable. You have the move and deselect same in old Disagea games I don't like but tolerate it. It's not a deal breaker it's just a minor selection thing I find annoying sometimes then more free selection multiple times of the same character on the grid.
You have the spear attacks both even if you selected front or further in front it attacks both enemies regardless so be careful of that I'd didn't realise. It's easy to get used to but did confuse me at first. I'd expected it to be the target not both targets (sobe careful of allies in front of further in front).
When it comes to throwing rock it hits who you want but with any other weapons they hit right through of magic or bow this was weird at first. Seemingly very realistic or old-school mindset that threw me off. You can get used to it but it is very odd and feels like I can waste more time moving my party around to make attacks front, or diagonal then well always getting hit more as sometimes over them isn't possible with sopes or I think in general unless a skill for it.
Or not get hit or not bundle up allies to get up a hill when it comes to combat.
Level caps are annoying. It doesn't help it hinders and is tedious. I get what their going for but it's more so a hindrance for whatever attack /class to beat the maps. You don't play with a limit of pawns and no way to upgrade them in chess you'd be annoyed too right? Or only other pieces. Sound ridiculous.
The tutorial was a showcase of dialogue telling you tricks/tips and class roles. It's in the original I checked footage and well sure.... But I still read the play info basics and advanced just encase.
Guest members are fine.
Goth or money I assume you get from selling loot, not from training or major battles???? This is odd but a thing. You only get xp/loot rewards that's it. Surprised me at first. Possible but odd.
Loot and cards you want to pick up to get money to sell the loot/use it if need be over buying gear. While cards are more skills to use besides what you get of skills from a level up if that character is given them that is.
Voice acting is fine. Artstyle is different it's I guess like a painting and pixelart it's interesting in its own way you can still tell what things are at least
.
You can tell the difference between party members but even by colour it was awkward and the flags only sometimes I paid attention to who was my own party members and the enemy ones. It tripped me up a few times. You can get used to it though and their names/class/what they look like, weapon and skills with more use.
I thought the camera is cool at first then hated it. The way to do it on the analogue stick from left and right I get mixed up on how to go the side I want. While zoom works fine.
The depth and hills makes sense and is my error by it can be annoying to want to aim high or diagonal or not hitting an ally. I have no idea how to make archers fire arrows higher and over people it's probably a skill I haven't come across yet.
Story so far is engaging enough to sit through it's probably the main reason to play if the gameplay elements get on your nerves because it's different then other tactics games in how it goes abour things other games have of quality of life or direction in certain areas. They can be good for being different but at the same time they can also be a hindrance. Again as someone that never played FF Tactics, Jeanne d'Arc, Advance Wars, Triangle Strategy yet (if similar then maybe good prep before or after tactics ogre) and more then going to a remake first. XD
Fine game. Some parts old (not bad thing). Some parts fair. Other parts myself used to modern/quality of life for those games then older then PS2 era tactics or Square's design .… Expand
