  • Summary: Dive into Super Skelemania, a single-sitting metroidvania about an acrobatic skeleton. Jump over a pit of thorns, roll your skull like a bowling ball, or headbutt a spider like any good skeleton would.

Super Skelemania is a speedrunner’s delight masked as a Metroidvania that does little to differentiate itself from the titans of its genre.

You are left alone with literally no instructions, the ability to jump, walk and some sort of attack. There is just a calming melody that does not push you forward. On the first play-through there is no timer (automatically deactivated in the options), just you and the game that will get explored. It needs about an hour if you explore everything in the five worlds with two boss-fights and one secret that can only be solved if you cleared the game once. The developer forces you to replay the game and the second time you will notice there are many ways to optimize the time you need to clear it. For example the ability to gain height if you jump from the ladder or the enormous damage boosting. In every world are some paths that can be taken to improve your run but they are not obvious enough to see the first time. The developer created a game that is perfect for speed-running even if you does not spend dozens of hours for a good time. The game is not the hardest game ever made and there is no dialogue so you can not expect a story but I do not think “Super Skelemania” needs any of this aspects to be the kind of game it wants to be. Super Skelemania is a tribute to classics like Castlevania and Metroid. It does an amazing job at capturing the feeling you got while playing those. It really looks and feels like something you would have played on your NES. You play as a skeleton, and you must collect power ups to make your way out of the areas. You find maps hidden about the areas as well as extra health boosts and abilities. You can find a double jump, the ability to roll into a ball, a lunge jump, unlock breaking blocks, and more. I love this aspect because it allows you to go into areas that you couldn't before. So when you finally make your where some where new it has a accomplishment feeling. You also find bells you can ring to save your progress. The main objective though is finding the five gongs. When you reach them you can fight the final boss. The bosses are really cool, I wish there would have been one for every area, because it feel so good and was a lot of fun fighting them and figuring out their weaknesses. That is the only thing I would have changed about this title would be a few more bosses. Every thing else just feels perfect and I had a blast.
i think another thing about this game that people will love is the speed running. I saw the World record was 15 minutes. i watched that and i don't see it standing long as he made a lot of mistakes. I enjoyed watching it though, and look forward to seeing more people running it as well. The trophies are pretty easy , and lean towards Speed running a lot as well as i see a couple for beating it in a certain amount of time. It isn't overly difficult so I also think it would be a good starting point for some one looking to get into speed running as well. It keeps your time played, and every thing so be a good starting point certainly.
Is it for you? I hope so. It's hard to say all the time, but for this one It really does just about everything right. It really takes you back, and gives you a stress free experience. it isn't overly difficult, and it just runs really smooth and without issues. So check it out and let us know what you thought. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Pros: Great retro look and feel
    Music and sounds fit perfectly
Main character and his abilities are fun
    Awesome bosses
    Loved the level design
    Speed running perfection

Cons: Wish there was more bosses

Overall: 8.0 A trip down memory lane when the NES was hooked to the 13" television, and you had a Hi-C Ecto cooler by your side. Just a fun flashback in gaming, and a perfect game to start up your new speed running hobby.
