Super Bomberman R is an attempt to 'modernise' bomberman, and make it appeal to kids. There's an incredibly cringe story mode, with anime cutscenes and some incredibly thin and cheesy plot. The default camera is now loose and askew for some reason that I can only assume is trying to be trendy.
A lot of traditional mechanics have been removed.

There is a "store" to buy accessories to put on the characters head ... for some reason..
Additionally, extra characters and levels, especially more traditional levels, need to be purchased.
Bomberman defaults to having multiple lives now. So getting hit by a bomb doesn't end the round. The default "veteran" mode has 3 lives. So that means you can get hit 3 times in a level between actually losing... How that can be called "veteran" is insulting.
There is essentially no puzzle element to the story mode, it's just a series of battle stages against random enemy animals, in stages split into sections that require traversing ramps to move between. The square grid format is there, but because of the ramps and blocks that cannot be blasted, it essentially kills the grid gameplay, and makes the game far more linear.
The enemies are extremely trivial, they don't attack, and just move in 4 directions.
As far as a battle-only bomberman game, Bomberman Ultra was a better game because you not only could play multiplayer against other humans, but there were AI bombermen to play against, so the challenge was to avoid your own bombs whilst moving around, as well as the bombs of other bombermen moving around. Much more fun than just blowing up animals that don't even attack you back.
Additionally, Super bomberman r has stripped away a bunch of functionality, you can no longer lift and pump up bombs and throw them, you can no longer remotely detonate bombs. In fact so much of the gameplay has been stripped out it'd probably be quicker to list was was left in.
I saw this game had a fairly decent rating and a fair bit of praise for the story mode, so bought the game with my fingers crosses, hoping it'd be half of what Bomerman 64 was. But no, it's not.
Bomberman 64 was a masterpiece that in a way was too good for the Bomberman franchise. Bomberman is famous for being a little guy that walks in 4 directions, dropping bombs and needing to hide from the flame. Destroying blocks to get access to parts of the stage, and needing to kill enemies. Vs/battle mode is even more fun with multiple other players trying to bomb you back.
Bomberman 64 was a puzzle game with huge stages requiring traversable and puzzle solving. Additionally the player had to collect items to progress, and the story had an actual plot with invasion and threat.
I recall spending many hours solving the puzzles figuring out how to bounce bombs upon eachother and slide them to different areas to allow thee player to use them as transport.
There was puzzle solving, platforming, and a ton of challenge.
Super Bomberman R is just an overpriced, gimmicky battle mode game with a forgettable and cheesy story mode than can be skipped.
The new slanted moving camera is just horrible. Luckily you can set the camera to fixed and front, in the options but why anyone would want to play with the default camera is beyond me.
And why on earth is there no single player battle mode against ai bombermen? Insane.
Honestly i'd have preferred Bomberman Ultra remastered for the ps4 than whatever this was trying to be.
Let's just pray that one day nintendo remaster bomberman 64 for the switch but it's tragic that such an incredible game has been left to be forgotten.… Expand
