I used to play Bomberman Party all day. I had huge expectations for this game but unfortunately, it did not deliver. It was still a good game but I was looking for something more. Something that could emulate the fun it was playing Bomberman on the PS1. It might have not lived to my monumental expectations but it was still a pretty good Bomberman game to play for a few hours.

Super Bomberman R is undeniably fun to play with friends or family but on your own, it is pretty boring. The bots are super dumb and the mode story isn't very interesting. That's it. It's worth buying if you find it cheap enough but the content isn't that great. Some of the characters are fun to play as but it gets old fast. Another major issue found in this game is its dead community. There is no one playing this online so you have to play with bots and in this game, they're just too easy to read. They're AI is ridiculous.

If you have someone to play this with online or local, I still recommend giving it a try but only if you find it dirt-cheap as it lacks content to keep you hooked for long hours. It could also be a good gift for your kids/younger siblings as its simple gameplay is easy to master even for kids.

Super Bomberman R is a puzzle game featuring a 3 hour long story mode and not much else…
The game tells the story of the bombermen and ladies setting out to stop black hole and the 5 Dastardly bombers...
you can play the game on multiple difficulty settings...
The campaign takes places across 5 different worlds, each dedicated to one of the dastardly bombers... here you’ll be clearing challenges to work your way to the boss of that world...
These challenges can vary from defeat all of the enemies, to find hidden keys, lead the stranded bombers to safety, and throw switches...
And none of this is really challenging or engaging…
    it’s all sortve mindless…
you start by choosing your character at the start of a chapter and you just drop bombs... these bombs will destroy objects in your place as well as take out enemies, you’ll find pickups to increase your speed for example or the amount of bombs you’re able to carry and drop…
but you use these rules of bomb dropping and enemy slaying to complete these tasks…
and none of the levels really get too challenging to solve or even though provoking.. There are a few... especially in the ice levels towards the end... but they are far too few and far in between... I would’ve liked having to use my brain more like I did in these ice levels as I’m sliding around like the caves in a Pokémon game… but for the most part all 3 hours of this game really remains the same... so it for the most part just feels like you’re going through the motions...
it is possible to die, and you will a lot from blowing yourself up or enemies getting you, but you are able to spend gems to continue… gems earned both from completing chapters as well as in multiplayer…
and at the end of these chapters there is again a boss battle.. These are probably the best moments of the game where you’re trying to trap your opponent and hit them bit ha bomb to then go against them in their final form to unlock the next stage…. These moments before the final show down do offer a bit of challenge and are better than the boss battle show downs themselves...
Outside of the campaign there is a multiplayer mode where you’re facing 4 opponents to try and take each other out... be the last bomber standing…
you can play locally as well as online, but I found it to be impossible to find enough players online to get any matches either ranked or unranked.. So unfortunately bomber man doesn’t realistically go beyond its 3 hour campaign which is a shame... sure you can grind for cash to unlock the many characters... but for what?
    Online is a ghost town.
I give Super Bomber man R

Super Bomberman R is an attempt to 'modernise' bomberman, and make it appeal to kids. There's an incredibly cringe story mode, with anime cutscenes and some incredibly thin and cheesy plot. The default camera is now loose and askew for some reason that I can only assume is trying to be trendy.

A lot of traditional mechanics have been removed.
There is a "store" to buy accessories to put on the characters head ... for some reason..
Additionally, extra characters and levels, especially more traditional levels, need to be purchased.

Bomberman defaults to having multiple lives now. So getting hit by a bomb doesn't end the round. The default "veteran" mode has 3 lives. So that means you can get hit 3 times in a level between actually losing... How that can be called "veteran" is insulting.

There is essentially no puzzle element to the story mode, it's just a series of battle stages against random enemy animals, in stages split into sections that require traversing ramps to move between. The square grid format is there, but because of the ramps and blocks that cannot be blasted, it essentially kills the grid gameplay, and makes the game far more linear.

The enemies are extremely trivial, they don't attack, and just move in 4 directions.

As far as a battle-only bomberman game, Bomberman Ultra was a better game because you not only could play multiplayer against other humans, but there were AI bombermen to play against, so the challenge was to avoid your own bombs whilst moving around, as well as the bombs of other bombermen moving around. Much more fun than just blowing up animals that don't even attack you back.

Additionally, Super bomberman r has stripped away a bunch of functionality, you can no longer lift and pump up bombs and throw them, you can no longer remotely detonate bombs. In fact so much of the gameplay has been stripped out it'd probably be quicker to list was was left in.

I saw this game had a fairly decent rating and a fair bit of praise for the story mode, so bought the game with my fingers crosses, hoping it'd be half of what Bomerman 64 was. But no, it's not.

Bomberman 64 was a masterpiece that in a way was too good for the Bomberman franchise. Bomberman is famous for being a little guy that walks in 4 directions, dropping bombs and needing to hide from the flame. Destroying blocks to get access to parts of the stage, and needing to kill enemies. Vs/battle mode is even more fun with multiple other players trying to bomb you back.

Bomberman 64 was a puzzle game with huge stages requiring traversable and puzzle solving. Additionally the player had to collect items to progress, and the story had an actual plot with invasion and threat.
I recall spending many hours solving the puzzles figuring out how to bounce bombs upon eachother and slide them to different areas to allow thee player to use them as transport.

There was puzzle solving, platforming, and a ton of challenge.

Super Bomberman R is just an overpriced, gimmicky battle mode game with a forgettable and cheesy story mode than can be skipped.

The new slanted moving camera is just horrible. Luckily you can set the camera to fixed and front, in the options but why anyone would want to play with the default camera is beyond me.
And why on earth is there no single player battle mode against ai bombermen? Insane.

Honestly i'd have preferred Bomberman Ultra remastered for the ps4 than whatever this was trying to be.

Let's just pray that one day nintendo remaster bomberman 64 for the switch but it's tragic that such an incredible game has been left to be forgotten.

Also it misses a way to unlock all ingame content with a shortcut, not everyone has time and motivation to grind through the singleplayer to unlock all of the ingame content. Expand

I do not know why i like this game but i do. It's fun to play online and the story mode is super fun. The puzzle combat has a nice difficulty curve. The coop is very fun to play with friends. The balancing is a little wonky. The Story mode gets a little boring at times.

A horrible and terrible looking campaign really brings this game down. The maps don't make any sense, there is a lot of 'pollution' in the graphics. Luckily, the couch multiplayer is as amazing as always and fun as hell, a shame that the online component feels so empty. A game that really could use cross play with all platforms.

Really disappointing. I bought it on sale for $10 and that’s the most you should pay for it. Totally crazy to charge anything more for this. But the graphics, controls, and overall presentation are honestly just above what you’d expect a game design student to turn in for a term project in school—just really simplistic and cookie cutter. The story mode is basic and forgettable, with bosses that just aren’t fun. Bottomline is that the battle mode is alright. Wouldn’t buy again, though. You might enjoy it more than I did: it’s not unplayable or anything like that. Expand

The story mode it's too short and the level design is confusing due how hard is too differentiate the heights due the bad unity engine usage. Also the infinite spawn points of enemies
destroys every sense of logic and makes levels boring due the trial and error mechanic and continuous deaths (only the 3,8% of the players have finished the game on normal).

On the other hand the music is really good and the ending JPop theme performed by Hitomi Harada is awesome, also you can play the complete campaign couch potato coop which makes it much better.
The story itself it's nothing special but the cartoonish kawaii bombermen designs are very nice.
The offline player/s vs CPU mode is more enjoyable, the CPU AI is quite competent and you have a ton of well known PlayStation characters and levels to unlock.
I paid 6 euros for it and I don't regret it but the release full price was way too expensive for this game.

My first Bomberman game and I did not realize it would be hard. Despite that I love the story and the aesthetics of this game. Each Bomberman has personality and character. Wasn't a fan of the 10 stages you would have to go through in each world since it felt tedious to me but like I said this is my first Bomberman game so if this is the norm for the series then I can get over it.

Super Bomberman R goes big on multiplayer and brings the fun. The campaign however does not due to a weird balancing act. Thanks to fast gameplay and many characters there is plenty to do even though the in-game currency is way off.

Super Bomberman R comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC with updated graphics, some brand new features and playable characters, like Ratchet and Clank for PS4 and Master Chief for Xbox One. Besides these plus, it is exactly the same game, extremely enjoyable if played with at least a couple of friends.

Despite some weak points, Super Bomberman R, is a funny and madly entrance for both classic players and casual ones that are playing a Bomberman for the first time. I recommend you to play it with your friends or for those moments when you need a break and just have fun. The game doesn't pretend to be something else but a Bomberman, and that's why It works.
