Waited years for this game to be released after trying it at EGX in 2016. Sadly after purchasing it on PS4 I noticed some critical gaps in what would make it a great game. Firstly the frame rate for some reason isn't a static 60fps. It feels like it's locked at 30fps making it no where near as smooth as I was hoping (I'm sure the PC game is a lot better for this). This is crucial as it's a game that requires a lot of precision.

The other disappointment is that for single player there's not quick vs AI mode. There's a campaign but you have to choose one character and go through a series of missions - you can just pick a character and battle against one or three other AI. I really have no idea why they left this out.

So, if you've got friends over and want a good couch game for up to four players, this is still good fun despite the frame rate and lack of single player options.

Local multiplayer lacks the narrative trappings of the campaigns, but serves as a solid extension of the core gameplay. Online multiplayer, however, is where Strikers Edge falters. After several attempts to evaluate it, I was never successfully matched against an opponent. So, for six-eyed folks in search of a frenetic couch co-op game, look no further. Strikers Edge is an underdog to root for. The rest of us might be better off renting Dodgeball instead.

Overall, Strikers Edge is an admirable fighting game that inflects a new direction in the genre. The game is still niche, and is lacking in both aspects that do it the most credit, but the end product is a marvel to be inspired by and improved upon.

Strikers Edge is a pretty pixel art game with a very focused design and a well-developed experience. Unfortunately for the game, the fun is only there for the first couple of hours and the luster sadly quickly wears off. I appreciate the simplistic design but the unforgiving AI and limited roster/arena scope makes the game feel less then it could have been. I enjoyed Striker’s Edge and could even see this game becoming a breakout hit if the developers were able to expand the game's roster and loosen up the difficulty a bit.
