Street of rage

I really hope this gets a sequel and that it's financially successful because DotEmu have somehow managed to make a sheer masterpiece in the Streets of Rage franchise two decades later. Unbelievable. What a f**king splendid game man! Unfortunately however it really doesn't look to me like it's getting the recognition and hype it deserves. Even though I'm not a long time fan of the series, you can tell the amount of love went into this game and the passion and respect for the series past. It features secret retro levels, unlockable SOR1 versions of some of the characters, and even an option to change the music to the retro style.

The game also handles difficulty very well and instead of the game kicking you back to the start when you run out of lives the game resets the stage. It takes a bit of endurance to get through some of the stages and was old-school in all the right ways. There is also an arcade mode which you have to beat in one go or you have to start over, for those looking for a truly old-school challenge and a great challenge for players to attempt after they finish the main story.

The games presentation is also great and features stunning hand crafted character sprites and 2D stages flowing with personality, detail, and color. The music is also great and pretty heart pounding stuff all around with a retro edge with the synths. Something that keeps you wanting to push forward and enjoyable to listen to outside of the game. In terms of sound design the game does a good job with making the players attacks feel satisfying.

Gameplay is mostly very simple, and this is a positive. Beating and juggling your enemies is super exciting and deciding which moves and ways to approach various enemies and using throwables and avoiding hazards are all well made parts to the combat, making a satisfying and sometimes challenging experience. Bosses end of each stage in very tense and diverse ways, with unique attacks that keep you on your toes and it will take a lot of aggression to take them down. Each one of these were memorable mechanically and had a lot of personality and character.

The story is simple and short but its presented with comic styled pages that are very well drawn and the characters have fun personalities and charming dialogue to keep you wanting more of them. The villain's aren't particularly memorable or unique but the story mostly gets the job done.

The games short length and online and couch co-op capabilities offers a lot of replay value. You can do all the stages solo if you want or play with a friend. You can even join random online games. The only issue with the online, is that if a player leaves the stage ends and if you were close to finishing the stage you can't finish the rest on your own and are sent back to the main menu. This is a huge issue and didn't need to be here at all.

In terms of extra content the game is very healthy. SOR4 has extra unlockable characters, secret stages, mania mode, a boss rush, and the arcade. There is definitely a lot to do here and the game is already low priced which is a great deal and a very generous game.

Overall the game is flowing with personality, stunning environments, great music, a fun story and a great amount of content and most importantly: ITS A LOT OF FUN.

I got a little skeptical at first, knowing Sega ain’t developing it. The soundtrack was the second thing i got worried about. SOR 1 & 2 made a statement back than. SOR 3 missed it completely. Although all three composed by Yuro Koshiro, i hoped in return he would stick to the beats of 1 & 2. The teaser and the gameplay footage looked promising. Although there was lots of getting used to it. Hand draw art and animation, Axel put on some weight and grow older, new mechanic, supers, new beats and so on. With all them changes will i still like the game?
Today i played the game for the first time. I booted the story mode in hard and entered the game. All of a sudden all mine worries disappeared. Right from the start it got nostalgia. Yes the hand drawing characters and stages look different but the streets of rage is still there. The game moves at the same pace and handling wise as 1 & 2, no running as in part 3. I personally don’t miss that at all. The soundtrack as usually kicks ass. The tracks evolve during gameplay, depending on where you are in the stage. A nice featurw. There is even a option when you want to go listen retro! As an old skool gamer and a huge beat em up fan, I like this game alot. Not the best and certainly not the worst SOR game out there.

I am having such a blast playing this game! I easily recommend it to all beat'em up fans, specially the ones who experienced SOR 1, 2 and 3 on Mega Drive. Amazing. Beautiful graphics and colors, nice improvements on fight mechanics and on gameplay overall, beautiful tribute to older SORs, great characters, cool story. I absolutely loved it.

The level design is now more varied then ever with each level throwing new scenarios and surprises at the player. The soundtrack is still great but maybe not as legendary as SO2. The graphics are a crisp comic book style, giving a slightly different feel to the gritty originals but again it looks modern and retro at the same time.

Some may complain that the gameplay is repetitive but that didn't bother me back in day and it doesn't bother me now because it's so much fun to play and very repayable. I think this may have even surpassed SOR2 and in doing so has become the greatest scrolling beu ever!

The graphics are the most noticeable difference between this and previous games. The hand-drawn animations lean towards more cartoon-y cell-shaded graphics compared to the darker tones of SoR3. The graphics however are good, but like previous games it can be quite apparent that palette swaps have taken place to artificially increase variety. The game could have benefitted from a few more sprites.

The game play is the bread and butter of SoR and this iteration achieves this very well, for the most part. The rather glaring flaw is the variance of depth between the characters. The base 4 characters lack a proper sprint ability, whilst classic characters are even more limited as they are literally lifted from the old games and placed into this game, warts and all. Perhaps some people may see this as a challenge to be conquered by completing runs with restricted movesets, however it came across as shallow and a lazy missed opportunity to me. Also, I don't know if it was this bad in previous instalments, but I found enemies to be cheaper than ever with their attacks, including unblockable attacks thanks to a lack of a dodge mechanic.

The manner in which characters are unlocked could also be a source of frustration. Although it encourages replayability, having to reach total scores of over one million seems a bit of a slog to unlock all characters. A possible future concept for the game could be the option of creating your own character/s.

I also found the bosses to be a bit underwhelming and unremarkable. The main antagonists were excellent, however, and added to the story.

Overall, if you enjoyed the previous entries you will probably enjoy this a lot too. I wish they had experimented a bit more with newer characters and enemies, and I wish more characters unlocked through the first and second play-throughs, but a key allure of SoR is that it makes you want to play it over and over again. I felt that somewhat here, however I don't think it holds up in the modern era of gaming in terms of replayability,

I didn't like the new art style - or more accurately - it worked for Wonder Boy 3 - The Dragons Trap - but not for this. I didn't like Cherry Hunter's guitar being unbreakable compared to a lead pipe and Floyd having this massive cannon.
As the game neared release the developers started to show that they WERE listening to fans of the series. Adding in the retro characters was a stroke of genius. They even responded by adding in some old school filters. I actually suggested that to them and clearly they listened.. or were already on it (I like to kid myself and think they listened to me ;) ).
Upon release.. I felt a bit let down by the music.. but as I've played it more, I've realised that the music is pretty stonking and I now have it in my car to listen to and I guess grow to love even more.
The gameplay though is just a joy to behold. The retro characters have been tweaked in order to fit in with the new game engine but the adjustments aren't jarring.. the SoR1 characters feel surprisingly great.. if a tad overpowered.. but that's cool. All characters do feel great to play and new comer Floyd and Adam are my current faves to play as.
My only nitpicks now are that they decided to perpetuate the look of Blaze being overly sexualised. What strong female fighter would go into a street brawl wearing hoop earrings and a boob tube is beyond me.. but then again.. she's been wearing that since SoR2.. I had kinda wished to see her depicted more like her SoR1 look where she looked more mature and capable as opposed to Julia Roberts ala Pretty Woman.

Streets of Rage 4 is a fantastic package upon release but not only that - this game has room to move. When you unlock all the characters.. when you see who else appears in the game as either enemies/bosses/background characters.. Lizardcube/Dotemu clearly have it set that they intend to add even more characters to the roster. The map of the city showing you the locations seems initially unnecessarily large but again - this game has been designed in a way that intimates that new characters, locations, stages and episodic DLC could very much keep this game in your gaming rotation.
As a huge fan of SoR 1 and 2 (3 was meh.. good ideas just poorly executed in terms of overcooked graphics, sound and fighting engine tweaks to try and make it cool).. I never thought I'd see another Streets of Rage. Lizardcube and Dotemu clearly had a similar love for the game and have crafted this new entry into the series and it deserves all the acclaim is gets. I've bought this on PS4 digitally and I have a physical Switch copy on the way.. It deserves a double purchase as far as I'm concerned.

The art style is good although subjective - some people will dislike it. It's a cartoony style that everybody saw on the trailers so it should not be a surprise to anyone who purchases the game. I liked it. Animation is good but not excellent - but considering all the frames were hand draw, it's a good job.

Don't get fooled by the new graphic revamp, though. This is a 90's game, with all its perks and flaws. And some annoying flaws.

Why can't I run? Characters move so slow that after the 2nd chapter it kinda feels like a chore. Battle is cumbersome too because it's really slow to move and fight. Some characters have running though (Cherry), Adam has a Dash, so why not make the running a default move??

And talking about moves, this edition lacks variety. You'll find yourself mashing the punch button until the end. It's boring. They could have added a lot of variety on the arsenal. The upgradeable specials are gone, stars are only used to measure how many specials you have. Gone also are the "free" specials like in SoR3 (when the special bar filled).
My benchmark for move arsenal is still Double Dragon Advance, for the GBA. That little game is amazing, almost all combination of buttons gets you a different move. This should be used here in SoR4. It's 2020, for goddamn sake.

Story is a bit silly but not different from old Beat'em Ups so whatever.

There is hope for some improvements over updates (PLEASE make Running an option) or even new characters (don't charge us extra on DLCs, don't be greedy), but all in all, I felt a huge opportunity was missed.

I cut my teeth on the originals when I was a teenager. This title is nothing like them.

Let's talk about the length of each level in story mode. They are a joke. Sure it's a beat'em up, but 5 minutes to clear an entire stage? Really? $25 bucks for this? At least in previous games, levels had 2-4 parts with mid-bosses and an apparent ending fight. This has been none of that.

Then there's the zoom-in, which is awful and claustrophobic. Get ready for roughly 40% of the room to fight on vs. the originals. You're going to get crowded real fast with enemy UI so smart that they zone-read you all the time, making combat insufferably annoying. Not fun, not challenging, Unfun.

You are woefully unprepared to deal with enemy attacks. Again, in previous games the with having so much room to move around each screen, avoiding attacks by LOS was easy. Here though, you don't have that, and there is no block, and you'll be stunned so much because by it. User damage output is underwhelming while AI is over-tooled, which leads me to my next point...

    Normal is broken.

Don't give me the "get gud" argument, there is a ridiculous amount of enemy damage upscaling on normal that the game is just unplayable. When your down 80% health on the 1st screen from the basic give and take from combat, you done goofed. And I think the devs knew this because of the absurd amounts of food spawns there are. Even Bosses have food spawns. Cut enemy damage output by 30% and food spawns by 50%, and you have yourself a workable title. In a beat'em up, there should be in the moment strategizing on when to pick up food or not. This is awful design. Forget the levels of difficulty, I like my sanity.

As for easy, it's a joke.

This is in no way worth $25. This is, at most, $10. But I did get one thing out of this game that ended up being a positive point. This is the last game I'm buying that's cashing in on my nostalgia. No more remakes, reboots. No more 20+ year sequels, I'm done.

    Cons:
The vertical movement speed doesn't feel fast enough. No balance between different characters movement speeds when screen travel and transition are required for top scoring. Top scores are more reliant to throwing enemies to one side of the screen than not getting hit. Vertical movement and attack of some enemies feels unbalanced when factoring in their trajectory is important for score attack. Music doesn't feel up to what my expectations were for Streets of Rage which was a big part of the series prior. Not ALL the characters from previous games are there :(

Update: Changing from an 8 to a 4 because I found out the menu where you stage select emits a non-stop high pitched noise that I can only assume old people can't hear and that's why it's in the game. But it's goddamn loud and hurts my ears.

2- no matter how far exceedingly you’ve reach in your combo, a single hit takes everything away like you’ve done nothing. The developers are not happy allowing you to have the points of the combo level if an enemy attack interrupts it. I once reached over 100 hits during an Arcade run in around stage 4 or 5, and got hit and I lost my combo count and no points were rewarded to me. That is extremely disappointing and frustrating. I wish the developers would fix those two issues which I find to be clear drawbacks.
