Without its many technical issues, Save the Light could have been a good video game adaptation of an excellent show. The involvement of its creator is apparent and the voice cast gave the game the same consideration they do the source material. I even liked the combat and storytelling, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the frustrations of having to frequently restart the game or watch helplessly as Steven’s run animation looped while he stood next to a rock.

Save the Light plays like your typical RPG, but the notion that you're off on an adventure with your best friends is tied to the game’s systems in an extraordinary way. If this was all Save the Light was, we'd be talking about a simple-but-enjoyable RPG, and a pitch-perfect way to hang around in Steven's universe between seasons of the show. Unfortunately, it’s still brought down by the fact the game being broken in some major ways.

Unfortunately what could've been a fun tie-in is held back by technical hiccups and an inefficient combat system. [March 2018, p.85]

I was so excited for a Steven Universe RPG, but I wish the game had been delayed a bit longer so that many of the bugs could have been ironed out. There is potential for a great game that will make any player smile, it's just too bad the bugs overcame the final product in a way that sucked the fun out of it at times. This game has all the trappings of great humour and loveable characters, but it's hard to recommend at this time for fans and non-fans given the end result.

Steven Universe: Save the Light feels like watching an episode of the show mixed with some sweet old-school RPG nostalgia. It’s got the pure heart that makes Steven Universe so special, which makes it all the more tragic that it's just so riddled with stability issues. I hope that future patches will alleviate these problems, but this is a game that could have been perfect. Instead, it’s just a colorful shell of its potential — beautiful on the outside and a complete wreck on the inside.

It's got a lot of interesting ideas in theory, but the longer I played, the more I felt my feet drag. Making matters worse, it tends to have a bit of a loading problem.

Subjectively i love it, objectively; it has a lot of issues.

The story is at simple as the previous game and the show itself; "Fighting is wrong, we'll all be friends if we talk to each other" if that message bothers you, you should not pay attention to the story or no not playing it at all.

The music it's above average, it has a lot of melodies that just sticks to your head and matches perfectly the level you're in, but the rest of them, are just right.

The graphics look beautiful; just like anything drawn or models with cellshading, it never gets old, also Grumpyface Studios managed to make the 3D Models to look like moving drawings (it surprised me too xD) i don't know if that shows a lot of creativity or laziness from them, anyways, it looks great.

The gameplay is like some other non classical RPGs but also changes it a little bit; all your abilities (yes, ALL your abilities) have a "magic cost" and you have to wait X time to recharge you "magic" bar and attack your enemies, enemies who have a very simple attack pattern, the game includes different states both for your characters and for your foes, these states are caused mostly by elemental attacks, but the game don't includes elemental weaknesses so you can electrify the yellow enemies all you want, also the characters have a "friendship meter" that allows you to do a "super special ability" featuring two of them, most of that special abilities are great and pretty useful, but some others just aren't.

I'd like to say that the characters are amazing just like show itself, but we don't really see anything from them, they have some text lines (most of them with voice acting which is incredibly nice) but those lines could be mixed and you wouldn't notice the first hours.

There are a lot of characters to play with, all of them with unique and fun mechanics and special abilities, but it's remarkable that Grumpyface Studios promised there would be a DLC character, that happened in 2017, and today (July 2020) i can convinced say that the DLC will never arrive.

If you like the show and/or non conventional RPGs you'll probably love this game (just like me UwU)

This game is one of the best RPGs I have ever played. It is great game for any fan of the Paper Mario fan.
