Utilizing thought-provoking puzzles and intuitive gameplay makes State of Mind a fun experience that keeps us hooked until the very end. With so much to look at and explore, the title does an excellent job of world-building and creating a fully realized society. It's a deep game with much lore that adds to the genre. Where State of Mind excels in providing excellent gameplay, visuals and plot hooks, it falters in being able to answer many of the questions that it poses. Depending on which ending players arrive at, you could be left asking, "Is that it?" Despite its flaws, however, State of Mind kept us hooked until the very end. If one can overlook the plot inconsistencies, State of Mind is a deep story about the "what-ifs" of humanity's future.

An interesting adventure in the hypothetical year 2048, though it lacks replay value and smooth controls. Still, a great story, excellent voice acting and a unique graphical style make this game very much worth your time.

Players are instead transported to a world where a unique, riveting story awaits them, with twists lurking around different corners and insightful commentary on a whole variety of topics. While the developer is able to achieve so much success with its story, it does fall short on the introduction of a core mechanic that stops the gameplay from becoming repetitive. But that’s not enough to stop players from reaching State of Mind’s climactic ending, though.

State of Mind is a commendably well-presented, if challenge-light effort that dives head first into its deep and winding subject matter with nary a look over its polygonal shoulder. A mature adventure then that proves itself worthy of the descriptor.

State of Mind still delivers a stellar sci-fi experience that, while comparable to other entries in the genre, has a character all its own.

State of Mind delivers a very interesting story that only gets better as you play. The gameplay is quite simplistic (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and it is quite pricey (particularly on consoles), but of you’re ok with that, you’ll enjoy this thriller.

State of Mind is an interactive futuristic thriller from an adult perspective, which refuses any kind of action. A story dedicated to fans of science-fiction, dystopia and videogames with strong narrative. Maybe the resources of this independent game are limited, but his story deserves to be among the best of the year.

If State of Mind is slow, it’s only because it takes the proper amount of time to unfold its world and story. Gameplay may be a bit limited but there are so many good ideas about the concepts it evokes that you can’t help but love it.

State of Mind tells a compelling story about a futuristic world that can be very close to our on the next fifty years. Besides the wonderful narrative, low budget and scarce gameplay ideas are the only reasons why Daedalic game can't compete with the other famous competitor.

State of Mind is, for Daedalic, the biggest production bet.

An interesting but also dystopian tale that gives us the chance to experience a sordid future. A narrative experience with thriller style and great script twists.

Fans of the story-driven adventure game will likely find parallels with previous successes like Life is Strange and SOMA, though State of Mind’s reductive puzzles and constant tone fail to match the level of personality in either. This said, the developers are committed to exploring transhumanism in relation to very pertinent contemporary concerns, and ensure there’s enough sci-fi fluff to distract from the simplistic gameplay structure.

State of Mind offers a very good, "hard" sci-fi tale that deals with the theme of futurism, and, most importantly, consciousness. Some flaws do exist, like the many dull plot sections, and the simplistic, unimpressive puzzle-solving, but, as a whole, this will please most fans of narrative-driven adventure titles.

With its odd and yet striking visual style, State of Mind presents an intriguing world, in the precipice of a revolution. Following the exploits of a deeply flawed and complex character, the journey through the streets of Berlin is a fruitful one that I’m sure to remember. However, a myriad of pacing issues as well as a lack of interesting gameplay elements makes it very unlikely that I’ll be visiting the year of 2048 anytime soon. Perhaps we’ll see in thirty years.

The originality of its vision and the thrust of its narrative more than excuse some sci-fi clichés, and you’re left with a breezy adventure game which compels with its ideas, if not always with its play.

With a thrilling scenario that keeps the player spellbound until the epic ending, State of Mind, however, fails to captivate the player in the gameplay department, at least during the first half of the game. It remains a satisfying experience, with a real reflection on the excesses of a technology-based society.

While the limited amount of control can be frustrating, this mystery still manages to enthrall. [Oct 2018, p.77]

It's a visual treat, but underneath that style, State of Mind is lifeless, too wrapped up in its own ideas to even try and push the boundaries of the genre. I wanted to come away from the game with questions, but instead I came away feeling almost nothing.

Like a sitcom with the occasional bad episode, instead of keenly anticipating what I'll uncover next in the story, I began to just long for the finale.

In sum, it seems like the vision of State of Mind was bigger and more robust than its end result. The core idea is interesting, but the execution fizzles out early and doesn’t recover. Still, if you’re into sci-fi and are looking for a game to roll through on a lazy Saturday, you could do worse than State of Mind.

A compelling take on the future hampered by a story very much of our time. When I think about it, this is one I’d struggle to recommend that you pay much mind to. [Issue#153, p.87]

State of Mind is so obsessed with its story that it forgets what medium it’s in. While a strong storyline and adept world-building can’t be denied, the game can’t escape its undercooked mechanics and puzzles.

State of Mind offers an intriguing near-future tale that doesn’t quite deliver on its initial mystery. While it’s cast of flawed – and in some cases unlikeable characters – are interesting to get to know, the plotting ultimately lets things down by failing to get you invested in the story, and asking you to suspend your disbelief a few too many times. While the unique presentation proves to be an excellent fit for the setting, and helps distinguish it from the crowd, the price of entry will scare off anyone who isn’t actively seeking out this type of experience.

State of Mind is smart enough to borrow heavily from all kinds of other, better media, but nowhere near good enough to come close to putting a fresh spin on those ideas. You’d be better served taking the dozen hours this game expects of you, and putting them into some combination of Blade Runner, Heart of Darkness, The Matrix, and Deus Ex.

State of Mind explores a future in which the world is in complete disarray and asks some difficult questions, but ultimately buckles under the weight of its own flaws.

It’s no disaster, but State of Mind delivers only disappointingly forgettable returns on some significant pre-release promise.

Really enjoyed the cyberpunk setting with the amazing art style. Interesting story about the nature of love, existance, ethics, moral dileminas of man and A.I. Gameplay wise it is nothing really demanding. The unfolding story and character development is where the core experience is all at. If I had to nit pick the indroduction of one character Simon seemed a bit of a contrivence, but IRL pure random luck has indeed played a factor in my life, so. Full Review »
