I apologize for the mistakes, I'm french and my english is far from perfect.

I played this game thanks to the PS+ subscription but I'll review it like if i bought it as is no longer available for free. I love hardcore games, and i don't mind dying a lot in a game IF you've given a fair chance to success, which is not always the case in this game, an other problem of this game is its

I love hardcore games, and i don't mind dying a lot in a game IF you've given a fair chance to success, which is not always the case in this game, an other problem of this game is its hit-box that fails you from time to time, it wouldn't be that important if the difficulty wasn't that high, but in the case of Spelunky it can be very annoying. But the game still has a lot to offer, with very good ideas, and I'll keep an eye out for the next games from this studio as it only miss a few things to have a great game.

A fun game that is ultimately an exercise in repetition and frustration. While it is never too late to review a game, it is definitely to late for a review to have an impact on the game. Spelunking 2 is coming soon and I’m sure we will all forget about Spelunky soon enough.

A fun game that is ultimately an exercise in repetition and frustration. While it is never too late to review a game, it is definitely to late for a review to have an impact on the game. Spelunking 2 is coming soon and I’m sure we will all forget about Spelunky soon enough.

Spelunky is a procedurally generated platforming game. This is a mixed bag. You cannot learn a level and memorize paths. However, each play through is unique and sometimes a level design will have interesting results. After a few hours, the levels seem less unique, and I have little interest in playing the first 4 levels in the mine ever again. There are no secret warp pipes to take you to later levels or save states to replay levels. This is a deliberate design choice to favor a singular type of play that may not be fun for all players.

The mechanics of the game are also hit and miss, literally. The original game may have worked fine on a PC with a wired keyboard and low latency monitor. In a living room on a giant TV with a wireless controller, there is a little too much lag from hitting to the square button and enemies hit by attacks. Or maybe I’m just getting too old and too slow. Either way, the game could be more forgiving and that would make the game more fun.

I can stress enough the sense of futility. My kids were watching me play and thought it was pointless. I told them that this is how all games worked back in the 80s. I didn’t tell them about cheat codes, Game Genie, or how many quarters I would waste. Spelunky has a “this is the game, make of it what you will” feel to it that belies all of the secret areas and hidden end levels. I will likely never see the regular end level because my main goal as a “gamer” is to have as many unique experiences as possible, and I cannot justify spending so much time with one experience.

I will say that the deathmatch mode is incredibly fun and you should definitely break out this game when you have friends over.

Lastly and for full disclosure, Spelunky was a PS+ “free” game from a couple of years ago. I have no interest in “getting my money’s worth” out of it.

Thats not because you put in a big bag good ideas from others peoples, that it would automatically results a good game, and Spelunky is just that a big bag with a lot of random things inside, where emptiness is the result ! I got this for free with PS+. It's a fun game that reminds me of the original NES games from the early nineties. It's plenty challenging, the dynamic leveldesign is neat. Regardless, if the price is right (5-10 bucks) I think this game can be a lot of fun. Expand

This game has a great concept and its mechanics are very polished and well made but levels lack variety, feel empty and aren't very detailed or complex, they are clearly the result of an algorithm. The challenging difficulty is a definite plus for me though. I wouldn't recommend buying this game unless its on sale for 5$ or less, if its any more expensive you're better off buying spleunky 2 which is a vastly superior game. Expand

Much loved by critics, Spelunky is very much one for my "I don't see what the fuss is about" file. A pretty generic platform game with average graphics and horrible music. Steamworld Dig is much better in my opinion.
