I played this game thanks to the PS+ subscription but I'll review it like if i bought it as is no longer available for free.
I love hardcore games, and i don't mind dying a lot in a game IF you've given a fair chance to success, which is not always the case in this game, an other problem of this game is its hit-box that fails you from time to time, it wouldn't be that important if the difficulty wasn't that high, but in the case of Spelunky it can be very annoying. But the game still has a lot to offer, with very good ideas, and I'll keep an eye out for the next games from this studio as it only miss a few things to have a great game.

Well itTravelling through procedurally generated worlds in a fun cartoony art-style with a simple yet effective idea, sounds great right? Well it does, sadly however, at least for the PS4, seems to fail at really pulling it off. Though it is clear that work was put in to this game and several things are done right, the game just doesn't live up to the idea, in fact it shames it with frustratingly bad controls, especially when ladders are involved, frustrating enemies, that seem to be designed to abuse the blatant flaws of the combat system, such as not being able hit upwards without being hit yourself, frustrating ticking clock mechanic that sends in a ghost, seemingly whenever you start to have fun, that will instantly kill you, cannot be killed, goes through walls and takes up a ridiculous amount of space, frustrating speed, that is either far too fast, or much too slow, frustrating arrow traps that deal heavy damage, are practically unavoidable and are very easy not to see, frustrating instant death spikes and frustrating fall damage combined with frustrating camera that zooms in just enough that you can almost never tell whether or not the next drop will be to your death.
As you can tell, the keyword here is frustrating, for that is all the game is, it seems for everything it gets right, it gets several things wrong and is sure to constantly throw those "wrong" things at you. Also it is important to not that there is a difference between annoying and hard, a hard game will throw something difficult at you but it will also give you all the tools to defeat it, even if it doesn't explain them, an annoying game however will deliberately cock something up and repeatedly rub that cock up in your face while at the same time dangling a carrot in front of you.
All in all, this game is very disappointing for me, maybe the co-op and multi player makes up for it but the single player honestly frustrated me that much that I don't even want to try it, maybe it's unfair to not try it out but a game only gets so much leeway before I tell it to piss off. This game has spent it's leeway with me. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you're not used to the genre then Spelunky will probably take some getting used to like it did for me but if you give it a little time itIf you're not used to the genre then Spelunky will probably take some getting used to like it did for me but if you give it a little time it truly grows on you. The game is pretty challenging alone or with friends and the idea is repetitive but the variations of the levels keep it interesting as you don't quite know what you're really getting into for sure. Once you get far, start to run low on health and haven't found the next exit I think is when you will really appreciate what the game is all about.
    Pros:
    -Challenging
    -Multiplayer
-Surprising level of depth and strategy
-Great for Share features on PS4
-Free if you get it with PS+ (Cross buy too)
    Cons:
-Collecting the money and jewels is great but has little sense of reward
