This is a love-hate sort of score. The game can have really fun moments and challenging fights, but the enemy design and controls leave a lot to be desired. I played the archer. I played the archer. As I progressed through the story however, the game just became more and more of a punishment rather than an enjoyable experience, mostly due to balancing and sluggish control issues. At medium difficulty, most deaths can be attributed to cheap enemy design and lost inputs. For example: In one level, there is a boss with an unkillable minion who can apply bleeding, confused, and paralyzed (the latter which temporarily holds you in place at very inopportune times). Half the times I died to this boss where due to weird hit boxes and the player character refusing to drop through the floor when prompted. Loading times are also considerable, and I experienced three instances of the game crashing during loading, corrupting my save file and causing serious lost progress. Loading times combined with cheap enemy tactics (offscreen turrets, enemies spawning in cramped play platforming spaces). It left me feeling cheapshot. Since checkpoints are sometimes sparse, this means playing the same hateful spots over and over (and over) again. It’s possible that the game will be balanced more, but I would warn away anyone who doesn’t like Super Meatboy levels of challenge, Elden Ring levels of enemy cheapness, and some very frustrating difficulty spikes. Souldiers is a solid metroidvania, built around all the typical stylistic features of the genre. However, it struggles to find a distinct identity and carries a bit of technical and gameplay problems that negatively impact the experience. The inventory management, key mapping and save system in the game affect accessibility quite strongly, and the plot itself has never great peaks of originality. Still, Souldiers remains a fun game, with good ideas in variety of builds and situations.
