Two new heroes and some new little things do the trick… Or almost. Even if we’d like more new levels, Sonic Mania Plus is still a great game loaded with good ideas, and it’s still a superb tribute to good old Sonic.

Those looking for more Sonic could do far worse than this title, but don’t expect the extras to live up to the lofty standards set by Mania Mode.

Sonic Mania is easily the best Sonic I’ve played and also manages to be a return to the classic Genesis style. While recreating some aspects of the 90’s experience meant dealing with annoying things like running out of lives and restarting entire zones, it didn’t ruin the overall experience — this trip down memory lane was a welcome one.

Sonic Mania Plus is an extended and refined version of the game released last year. It adds some cool features, two new playable characters beloved by fans, and it comes in a new physical edition inclusive of a gorgeous 32 pages artbook.

This is the best Sonic effort in years as the developers managed to blend the things that made classic Sonic games so great in the first place.

Sonic Mania Plus is absolutely the way to experience this game. I may not have been blown away by the new characters, but Encore Mode is an excellent remix of the Mania I know and love. Whether you’re new to the game or coming back for more, Sonic Mania Plus is worth your time and attention.
