    This game barely reaches fun. While enjoyable, the game has a clear lack of direction and has little to no personality, been just a recopilation of stuff you already know but way worse. Sotrytelling here is awful, the characters are for the most part OOC all of the time and the levels are sometimes too simple.

    Does It Really Deserve The Good Reviews? There's No Level Design Bad Story And No Super Sonic Boss Fight. And They Completely Ruined Tails's Character Too!. And Also Why Is Super Sonic DLC It Should Be In The Base Game! Yeah Because Sega "FORCED" Classic Sonic In Forces Witch Isn't The Worst Thing In The World But They Messed Up him too!.     Although not the best sonic game it is not the worst one either that goes to sonic 4 but the avatar customization was good classic sonic sucked and modern sonic levels were too short and the avatar stages are fine

    Honestly, this game is a 7/10 but I'm giving it a 10 just to annoy the Colors fans who think their game is sooo much better when they share many of the same flaws

    This game is pretty mediocre, some tracks are good, but in general feels very rushed and uninspired, ganeplay while fun doesn't adds anything new and just ruins everything the previous games bulid.
    Is soulless and a bad attempt for appeling to nostalgia

    The fact that people call this game better than Frontiers is revolting. Sonic Forces may be one of the most dissapointing gaming experiences i have ever had.

    i played this game about a year after its release and it was ok the customizing feature was good but it was the only strong point the gameplay was too easy and the story was repetitive there were too few levels but it was good overall

    This game sucks. Through and through. Awful level design, bad controls, terrible story, 2 hour run time. The only redeeming factors are that the speedruning is decently fun, the character creator is pretty great, the music is good (like always), and the visuals are okay. Overall though, terrible game

The levels are lifeless and bland due to the level design feeling inorganic, and blocky. The art design is very boring, leaving the visuals washed out. The story is poorly written and paced, all the characters are out of character, and don't take the events seriously. Lastly, the game is too short, only being 2/1 Hours long, which is too short for a Sonic game. I feel like Sonic Team could of done really good, if not held back by the low budget.     It is a Sonic game made with a lot of laziness. The physics are crap, the story is nothing serious, the levels are quite short, there are bosses that are reused... But believe it or not, it's an enjoyable game if you intend to get all the rings red stars, numbers and moons of all levels! That's why I give it a 7.

    One of the most painfully generic Sonic games out there. It is easily my least favorite game in the franchise, not even the soundtrack can save it. Automation, lack of creative level design, awful story, and boring as heck, the 4 year wait wasn't worth it.

    Sonic forces is a very mixed title but there is a catch this is my opinion and in my opinion sonic forces is a good game

    PROS:the modern sonic game play is very engaging and fun to play and hit enemies the avatar is like sonic but feels better and has no boost the wispons are very fun to use and the avatars grapple mechanic is very fun to use oh and the sound track CONS:classic    Sonic forces is a very mixed title but there is a catch this is my opinion and in my opinion sonic forces is a good game

    Es un buen juego y sega hizo buen trabajo. No es una revolución, mas bien es un juego para mantener vivo al personaje por que da para mas. La jugabilidad esta bien hasta cierto punto, sonic moderno tuvo sus típicas fases frenéticas y de implemento bien la nueva jugabilidad del avatar que aparte tenia una personalización infinita y para todos los gustos, el único    (Opinión rehecha abajo)
    Es un buen juego y sega hizo buen trabajo. No es una revolución, mas bien es un juego para mantener vivo al personaje por que da para mas. La jugabilidad esta bien hasta cierto punto, sonic moderno tuvo sus típicas fases frenéticas y de implemento bien la nueva jugabilidad del avatar que aparte tenia una personalización infinita y para todos los gustos, el único que fue en declive fue el de Classic sonic que “cojeaba” en aspectos como su velocidad que sentía a veces que se frenaba y en el spin dash que era lo que me gustaba del del generations, eso si implementaron el drop dash que podía mas o menos fácilmente eclipsar lo demás.
    En general me gusto la historia, no era un sonic adventure 2 obviamente pero mejor que los últimos juegos después de unleashed. Eso si tenia huecos argumentales y algún que otro fallo de lo que podía ser la historia como que : “por que silver aparece en la resistencia así de la nada” o, el poco o nulo protagonismo de Chaos. Lo otro bueno son la participación constante en la historia de los amigos de Sonic , excepto de tails y Classic sonic. Lo otro bueno son los niveles, que en general todos me gusto mucho el diseño con una calidad grafica bastante buena para ser una portátil donde también los 920 p no se notan, aparte opino que me impresiono como sega logro hacer que el control del personaje sea como de 60 fps a pesar de que el juego valla a 30fps .Lo ultimo malo seria que los jefes son fáciles y un poco igual los niveles que de ves en cuando te cuesta sacar una S.

    5 años han pasado, no solo he logrado un juicio critico completamente superior a esa época si no que, incluso en aquel tiempo sabia en mi interior que estaba siendo benévolo con sonic, por que honestamente en aquel tiempo también me sentí decepcionado, pero nunca me pareció justo el trato que estaba recibiendo sonic y por eso decidí defenderlo. Aun así y aunque siga defendiéndolo en muchos sentidos, creo que debo ser justo con este juego y exponer mi nueva perspectiva critica.

    Evidentemente era un juego con el propósito de mantener al sonic moderno "vivo" en el mercado, uno completamente mediocre y que es hasta un poco triste.
    El diseño de niveles de sonic moderno se vio limitado a pasillos con apenas una que otra ruta diferente que al final vuelve al mismo camino rápidamente, no se recompensa en casi ningún sentido el esfuerzo por querer encontrar mejores formas de pasar el nivel, sobre todo por que hagas lo que hagas o como quieras hacerlo podrás obtener una S super fácilmente. El personaje es super estático y el homing attack es mucho peor utilizado en el diseño del nivel, sin decir que se siente mas torpe, lo demás lo típico, todo muy automatizado, super corto y con físicas limitadas.

    Nuestro personaje tiene un customize bastante pobre, personalmente no exijo mucho en un customizador y aun así sentí que todo era super simple. El diseño de niveles del personaje esta OK, realmente no es que me haya impactado ningún nivel y en realidad no soy el mayor fan de los wisp ni de cerca, pero si admito es algo que diversifica mucho la manera en que puedas pasarte los niveles, y los con Sonic en general estaban bn.

    Classic sonic sigue siendo medianamente disfrutable, pero su control y físicas fue contundentemente empeorado con respeto a generations, a veces tiene un diseño agradable, a veces es completamente olvidable.

    La historia es de lo peor de todo sonic, Ken Pontac creo que ha sido el escritor desde Colors y es de lo mas reprochable que ha tenido Sonic desde que existe, colors si bien tiene un desarrollo super infantil y con un sonic simplificado a solo bromas, no se tomaba en serio y el contexto seguía siendo un poco interesante, en Generations la historia es una justificación básica sin relevancia, Lost World fue una cosa rara, pero en Sonic Forces la historia se pasa de pretenciosa, intentado tomarse en serio varias veces, con personajes que están absolutamente infantilizados. Un montón de fanservice , ya sea los villanos, los secundarios, sonic clasico o tails, todos tienen un impacto casi nulo en lo que pasa y solo son justificados por una "guerra" de la que ni sabemos de como se llego ahí, y creando incongruencias completas con algunos como silver o Knuckles (como casi siempre). Aparte, ¿y las esmeraldas? ¿No era un momento obvio para ocuparlas o buscarlas?. Y bueno infinite es un villano planísimo y "edgy".

    Lo demás, apartado grafico decente, visual bastante bueno, música que incluso siendo obviamente mainstream la considero bastante buena (No la mejor de un Sonic ni de cerca), y pues todo al final para un cierre fácil y con un mensaje que queda super intrascendente y tiempo de juego mínimo, que ni si quiera el precio reducido justifica.
    Para mi de los peores juegos de Sonic, prefiero 06. 4/10    … Expand

    Not only the worst sonic game I've ever played but the worst game I've ever played. I wouldn't give this game to my worst enemy. Unfinished levels, controls are horrible, the music isn't even good, level layouts bad, tried charging you extra money for super sonic. Just skip this, it's horrible. Horrible writing as well.

By the time I almost finished the game in one sitting, I felt drained, sad and disappointed by the horrible localization, the extremely short levels (no thanks to the limitations of their engine, as clarified by Digitalfoundry), the lack of depth in its script and generally unmotivated mindset. This game is 6th boost sonic game and in my personal opinion the worst one due to it lack luster level design and super easy ranking system. La trama está muy mal elaborada, Sonic se la pasa haciendo chistes malos a cada rato a Infinite cuando se supone que Infinite es el villano, Cosas buenas del juego es que su banda Sonora UFFFF, es excelente aunque todos los Sonic tienen muy buena banda Sonora así que por eso no hay queja, también Infinite me pareció un buen villano y que por fin eggman esta enojado en este juego, cosas que me gustaría que mejoren es la historia y que a Tails dejen de tratarlo como un inútil… Expand

    Edit: I'm so sorry for treating this game so horribly, I hadn't played Sonic Colors and I can't believe I hated that one more than this one

    Forces is about what everyone says it is. Basic and uninteresting level design, Classic physics that feel like a s s and a story that reaches the level of borderline clickbait, play Sonic Generations instead. It's basically this game but done right in every aspect.

    Another disappointment and this had a lot of potential. The story seemed dark and interesting at first but just went lighthearted and very bland. I beat the whole game within 2 1/2 hours and I could of beat it in half the time if I skipped the cutscenes. I played it all the way through on hard and only died twice.     The story is the most soul-less part of this package, despite its promising premise. Eggman has taken over the whole world, and it’s up to a group of Sonic’s friends to stop them. The story has plenty of plot-holes and inconsistencies. Since when was Classic Sonic “from another dimension”? Why does Infinite become rogue because Shadow called him “weak”? Why is Sonic cracking jokes after 6 months of supposed torture? Not even the gameplay is able to capitalise on this exciting premise. The game is spilt into 3 playstyles. Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic and your customisable avatar. Modern Sonic is a watered down version of the boost gameplay style found in games like Sonic Unleashed, Colours and Generations. The drift is missing, most of the game is empty corridors and the game is the literal dictionary definition of “hold up to win!”. Classic Sonic is a broken mess. The physics are atrocious in comparison to the classic games. Sonic Generations didn’t have perfect physics for Classic Sonic either but the stages were built around these limitations and were enjoyable to play. The level design here is very simplistic in comparison to Sonic Generations and the Classic Sonic games. This gameplay style just makes me want to play Sonic Mania tbh. The customisable avatar is interesting. You get to relive your childhood and create your own Sonic OC. It’s really cool, I just wish that you could make a few more tweaks to your OC to really make it feel your’s. The gameplay is just as shallow as the other play-styles. It feels like a Sonic Adventure wannabe. You get given abilities via Wispons and while they are enjoyable, you find yourself sticking to one of them as some of the Wispons are useless (apart from if you are interested in getting all the game’s red rings).    … Expand

The first time you play the game you'll get tons of notices with useless cosmetics for your avatar. This is not the worst Sonic game ever but it's certainly the most disappointing. The game opens with Sonic getting pummeled by some of his past antagonists while Tails sits in the corner and watches his best friend get beaten up... NO REALLY. Cut to 6 months later, Sonic is believed to be dead, Tails has "lost it", Knuckles is a war general and Silver is there despite the fact he shouldn't know anybody in this timeline... no... really.

    Returning this game are some nostalgia bait, Classic Sonic is back and controls worse than ever, he has no momentum and will stop like he has bricks tied to his feet, his gameplay is the worst. Chaos from Adventure, who's in like 2 scenes, dies in one hit and doesn't even get a boss fight... TTTTTTTHANKS SEGA. Shadow who does nothing before the real Shadow shows up and Metal Sonic, who is Metal Sonic and does Metal Sonic things. Overall a bunch of nostalgia bait, and Shadow, that ultimately goes nowhere and just wastes your time, and as an Adventure fan p*sses me off. Why did Chaos come back? Why didn't he get a boss fight? WHY DID TAILS COWER FROM HIM WHEN HE DEFEATED CHAOS 4 IN ADVENTURE?! It's just aggravating.

    The story is frankly boring as sin, Sonic "dies" for 3 minutes before he shows back up, your OC is pointless but I guess kids will get a kick out of it, I know I would've as a kid, and he side characters do nothing, Knuckles is a war general... again yes really, but he doesn't actually... DO anything, he just tells you what to do and but some explanation for why HE'S the general would be nice, also isn't he meant to be guarding the Master Emerald? How does he have time for any of this? Then there's Silver who just... shouldn't know any of these people, and where is Blaze? I thought she was his guardian or something, where'd she go? And hey remember how he beat the p*ss out of Sonic in 06? Well he doesn't last 5 seconds against Infinite, which should make you think Infinite would be nigh on unkillable, but he has 3 whole boss fights and he goes down like a chump in each one, ONE IS AGAINST THE OC! ARE YOU TELLING ME MY OC IS STRONGER THAN SILVER!? WHY?! Then there's Shadow who... literally does nothing, he shows up to explain that Eggman makes clones of the 4 villains earli- wait why does he make clones of Metal? He's a robot just make more... and Shadow there are so many Shadow clones JUST MAKE MORE SHADOW CLONES. Finally is Tails, Tails finds Classic Sonic and they embark on adventures together, that's it, it feels really weird and disjointed. There's also Espio, Vector, Charmy, Rouge, Gamma and Amy but I don't care, do you care? Let's just move on. The actual PLOT is about Eggman taking over the world and rising up against him with our OC and Sonics... god I hate that there are two Sonics now. The game culminates in a big climactic showdown that is about as climactic as you'd expect from a game where Knuckles is a war general, which is to say, it's not. The game is littered with bosses that offer zero challenge and 3 of them are the main villain, he really isn't very threatening at all. The final boss against Eggman is pretty uneventful, you do a part as Classic Sonic with magical purple blocks that just kinda appear I guess, then a running section as Modern Sonic where you gotta dodge lasers and other hazards while boosting using Whisps to gain more boost... Didn't the Whisps leave in Colours? Why are they here? I could accept it in Generations because it was a celebration game but here? makes zero sense. Anyway the game ends with a big "my friends are my power" spiel, OC leaves, making you wonder why he was even here to begin with, they elude to Classonic coming back, I swear to god Sega if he's in Frontiers, and the world is back to normal, all in like 3 hours, at least it was short.

    You'll notice I only have 800 words to wrap up my thoughts on the gameplay, I've done that because there really isn't much to say, it's all automated, turning corners, jumping, speed boosts, most grapple points for the OC, it's all done for you, it's incredibly boring and I hardly remember any of the 30 stages because of it.

    To sum up, Sonic Forces is bad... REAL bad. It has an asinine story with characters who just AREN'T those characters, nostalgia bait that serves no real purpose, boring and automated gameplay, and a mostly forgettable soundtrack. There's no reason to ever play this game, just play Mania instead.    … Expand

    After replaying Sonic forces I did enjoy it, but the level design is severely lacking, classic sonic has no reason to be here, the game is too short and the plot feels unfinished.

    Now to the positive aspects! I love the customizable character! The costumes also contain references to the rich history of the franchise and it's cool!
    The soundtrack is amazing and hiring the London Symphony Orchestra is a GENIUS idea!
    The voice actors do their best to deliver their best performances as their characters. Too bad the script was kind of awful.
    The Hedgehog Engine 2 makes the graphics gorgeous! Too bad they spent more time making the engine than the actual game.

    In conclusion, Sonic Forces is not a bad game but don't expect it to be a masterpiece.
    New fans of the series will enjoy it but old fans might be disappointed.
    Fortunately, I was not too disappointed and I enjoyed Forces the way it is.
    However, I do hope that Sonic Team does a better job with the next game since the HE2 is technically finished and they'll have all the time they need.    … Expand

The controls are bit of a problem I always feel like i'm going to fast to make precise jumps this is extremely apparent in the 2d sections. And onetime I guess I was going to fast so as soon as a I made a small jump it sent me flying. The controls are fine but there is one thing about this game that I was not expecting to praise. The graphics are weirdly amazing they look detailed and colorful even though this games story takes place in basically war. Oh yeah the story kinda sucks. It takes it self way too seriously it tries to be dark and just doesn't work out but it does end up to some pretty funny moments the story takes it self so seriously that it's like a big joke that the game isn't in on. The game has three different play styles with three different characters. Normal sonic that plays like a boost game but to be honest I forgot I had an option to boost most of the time in those sections but these sections come with 3d platforming and normal boost game play. Classic Sonic is the weakest of all the play styles it's fine but it's boring mediocre platforming most of the time. The last play style is your own character basically you can create your own sonic character witch I think is really cool this is one of the best parts of the game customizing your own sonic character and playing as them. Their play style is basically some 3d platforming with their gun witch is super fun to use these parts are really easy but there probably the most fun destroying robots with your gun while doing pretty fun 3d platforming on the way. Sonic Forces is a short game I was able to finish it in about 3 hours. Each level feels like it's just getting started. I would really only recommend this game if you find for cheep and the game is on sale a lot these days. If you get for a good price I would say 20 bucks then it offers a fine enough sonic adventure with some pretty fun moments. It's nothing special but with the three hours that it has it's a pretty alright game. Although if you have the option between this and Sonic Mania, Sonic Mania is longer and is just a way better game all around.… Expand

    Sonic forces is amazing start if you new to the Sonic franchise, I Have nothing bad say about the gameplay except with retro Sonic he just never really feel good to use and always horror to play but he's maybe 20% of the game so is not that bad, soundtrack is amazing and it may be the biggest reason to why i enjoyed it so much ,

Sega can do so much more with Sonic, yet they keep pushing simplicity instead of complexity, which wouldn't even ruin the game.

    I believe that the next Sonic game will truly decide if the series dies, or if    I got this game after I sold my copy of Ocarina of Time 3D, and to my surprise, this game is horrid.     Continuing, the levels were kind of confusing, because when the course started to get really good, the level ended, which left me a little disappointed. But looking at the good points, the levels had at least three different routes to follow, and it also suggested the player to look for the red rings. The levels with the avatar are interesting because they have a different type of gameplay, but let's say that the classic Sonic ones are not the best. We all know that the Shadow Episode was disappointing in a lot of ways, but it still reveals some things that happened behind the game's story, so I kinda like it, I guess?

    Modern Sonic levels control well some straightforward level design but some good open design and good music
    Classic sonic doesn't control the best but the levels work around it he also has the least amount of levels. Okay music I like the techno-sounding music with the synths level design is okay to good.

    Escrevo isso com uma dor no coração imensa. Sei nem por onde começar... mas vamos lá. Vou falar de depois pontos, sobre O JOGO primeiramente e depois sobre a FRANQUIA no geral.
    Esse jogo é simplesmente uma DECEPÇÂO TOTAL, o jogo simplesmente um Bait pra todos os fãs da Era Adventure, Unleashed ate mesmo os da fãs da "Dark" Age, o jogo prometia ser algo que realmente Sonic tinha volta a    Escrevo isso com uma dor no coração imensa.     Esse jogo é simplesmente uma DECEPÇÂO TOTAL, o jogo simplesmente um Bait pra todos os fãs da Era Adventure, Unleashed ate mesmo os da fãs da "Dark" Age, o jogo prometia ser algo que realmente Sonic tinha volta a ser o que era, voltado a ter sua personalidade, atitudes de volta, que os outros personagens iam voltar a fazer parte da franquia, que a história ia voltar ser algo primordial e bem contada, que os vilões iam ser ameaçadores e incríveis, MAS NÃO.
    Esse jogo simplesmente segue o mesmo padrão da era de 2010, personagens chatos, irritantes e descaracterizados, história no mesmo nível que a do Colors, Generations, Lost World, piadas de darem vergonha alheia, Level Desing pobre e sem detalhes, jogabilidade nada fluida e automatizada, Soundtrack que oscila entre Excelente e Terrível, um vilão que parecia ser dahora mas é patético, Curtíssimo ( 3h p zerar), não é a pior coisa do mundo mas demorar 4 anos para entregar isso é simplesmente devastador. Ainda sim consegue não ser um desastre total mas com certeza é um tédio total jogar esse jogo.
    Não há condições mais de ser fã dessa franquia, essa franquia deixou de ser amada a muito tempo deste de 2010 eu já tinha indícios de não a acompanharia mais a franquia ai veio Sonic Boom eu desisti, com a vinda de Sonic Mania e Sonic Forces e coloquei esperança na mesma de novo com a vinda do Sonic Mania pois tinha sido um jogo fantástico que cumpriu a proposta de me dar nostalgia e ser um jogo feito com amor e depois esta super hypado com o Sonic Forces pois ia ser uma nova aventura com novos vilões e tudo que eu sempre queria desde a era Adventure/Unleashed/Heroes. Mas a impressão que tenho é que a SEGA/SONIC TEAM não se importam mais com boa parte da Fandom eles não tem interesse mais em fazer um jogo do Sonic com Carinho e amor pra fazer com que os se sintam respeitados, eles só estão preocupados com que nota o Lixo da IGN vai dar pro joguinho deles, só estão preocupados se os Boomers dos anos 90's vão sentir nostalgia jogando e falar frases genéricas e sem fundamento nenhum pra ganhar audiência em cima dessa Fandom quebrada.
    Essa franquia atualmente só é feita para Bebês de 4 a 6 aninhos com e para boomers do Mega drive que falam um monte de merda " SoNIC NAUM PISISA DE HISTÓRIA", " OS AMIGOS DELS SÃO INUTEIS" "NÃO POD LEVA SONIC A SERIU" "KKKK GADA GO FESTI" " A FANQUIA É PA QUIANÇA" "ANTES ERA TUDU LIXU PQ ERA SERIU" "É SO SUA NOSTALGIA DUS aDVENTURES VOC NUM TEM SENSU QUITICO e mais um monte que vocês já estão cansados de ouvir.
    No final de disso tudo eu continuarei longe dessa franquia e acho q se voce que tem um grande apreço por jogos como Adventure 1 e 2, Heroes, Unleashed, Riders Series, ate mesmo os StoryBooks, ate esmo pelo desenho Sonic X ou SAtam e quadrinhos e recomendaria voce ir para outra franquia porque atualmente a franquia Sonic só vivi através de Nostalgia dos anos 90's, memes, piadas idiotas e besteirol desenfreado. Se ainda quer continuar amando essa franquia e acompanhando ela fique a vontade, mas EU não tenho mais nenhuma esperança nessa franquia de que SONIC vai voltar a ser como era antes e nem deque eles vão fazer algo totalmente novo e ambicioso como sempre fizeram. " MAs voce não esta Hypado para 2021 que terá um SOnic Mania 2 e mais outro jogo do GADA GO FEST????" eu NÃO comprarei mais jogos dessa franquia ate eu realmente sentir que a SEGA realmente esta se importando com seus personagens e franquia e esta interessada de levar a franquia a novos níveis, patamares. Ate segunda ordem eu ainda continuo não sendo mais um um fã de Sonic assim como já tinha começado a desgostar de Sonic desde 2010 e em 2014 ter deixado oficialmente a franquia.
    Ate a próxima Sonic, que talvez nunca chegue essa próxima, mas vou ficar esperando essa franquia me impressionar novamente.

This game honestly feels like SEGA trying to push the Sonic the Hedgehog series in everyone’s face instead of focusing on some of their other gorgeous and well-developed series. SEGA needs to admit that Sonic is a dying franchise and has lost its potential in 2011, with Sonic Generations being its last good Sonic game (excluding Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed). This game ultimately and unintentionally admitted that Sonic is a dead franchise.

    There were so many things I just didn’t like about this game in general. First, what’s up with SEGA over-hyping Shadow, a dying character in the franchise? Don’t they realize there are other characters in the series that are better written than him and should be receiving the attention they deserve? Secondly, I didn’t like how all the levels felt exactly the same, they felt overly repetitive. Lastly, it feels like SEGA shoved E-123 Omega, Classic Sonic, and Shadow right into this game because they needed some more characters and “better gameplay,” whilst not realizing that it just didn’t work. It felt like they were trying to remake Sonic Generations by adding Classic Sonic, who was probably the most random and most pointless character in the game, you could have erased him entirely and the story itself would have been fine.

    However, I’m not going to deny the fact that the one thing I loved about this game was that SEGA and Sonic Team gave the players the option to customize and create their own characters. It’s something the Sonic community has been waiting patiently waiting for, and SEGA practically mastered it.    … Expand

Forces is perhaps the most disappointing Sonic game of all time for me. 06 may have been unfinished, but its level design and story in Shadow and Silver's campaigns were enough to where I could enjoy the game. Secret Rings may have ruined 06's development and played like trying to skateboard with a dumpster, but the music was fantastic and the characterization was leaps and bounds better than what preceded it. Also it lead to Black Knight, the latter may has maybe my favourite story in the series (still a toss-up between Black Knight and Adventure 2). Heck, even Lost World, which had my least favorite style of 3D Sonic gameplay, the worst story in the series and sent Sonic's writing down the toilet. But all of that doesn't match up to Forces.
    The Rookie levels are easily the best part of the game. Let's start with negatives and work our way to positives. The biggest problem is the physics. Jumping gimps your speed and if you move after landing you can shoot off like a rocket. Also, drifting is just a scripted segment that takes away more gameplay from you. Other then that, it's perfectly fine. The star of the show are the Wispons. This game is probably the second best use of the Wisps after Colours. It gives a lot of customization and can lead to different shortcuts throughout the game. They each have their own positives and negatives which is what makes a good gameplay style. For example, Burst gives you a strong attack, but it only goes directly in front of you, or Lightning which gives you wide attack, but it involuntarily lurches you forward, or Drill that gives you a huge dash, but takes a while to charge up.
    Sonic is alright. The problem is entirely with the level design. It's just a narrow hallway with some enemies to boost into. The whole design is just so automated. Just walk forward and boost, watch a thousand cutscenes in the levels that take away even more gameplay. The only attempt at level design is Lunar Canyon which is probably the best level in the game, and the 2D sections which are redundant because we already have Classic Sonic.
    And guess what? He sucks. The physics are clunky and slippery, the level design will let you slam into obstacles without batting an eye. And unlike the first four games and Mania which Forces is so pathetically trying to replicate, the design is not based around manipulating the physics to your advantage to gain momentum, which is what made Sonic... well... Sonic. Here they just plonked him in a Modern 2D stage instead of building the levels around perfecting the controls.
    Oh, there's also the Tag Team stages which just mix Sonic and the Rookie. They would've been my favorite levels in the game, but instead of focusing on the Rookie with boost mechanics, they're instead Sonic levels with Wispons, bleh. Also can we just bring up how stupid Fist Bump is? It sounds like a rock remix of an MLP song, like, 80s MLP. (Also forgot to mention the rail-grinding segments. They're kinda fun.) There are also these stupid extended QTEs which are just dumb transitions.
    OH!! Almost forgot! Shadow's in this game too..! and he sucks... He plays the exact same as Sonic, but his level design is even worse. The levels will barely give you any moments of clarity before shoving you in scripted segments you have no control over, and the game will often shove you into obstacles that either result in death, trial and error, or waiting. And no-one wants to wait in a Sonic game.
    Okay, enough of the gameplay, what's the story? Bad. So much is told to us, never shown. There are so few cinematics that it feels like a waste of time. The story is told to us behind walls and walls of boring dialogue. Oh, Sonic is being tortured? SHOW US! Oh, the Rebellion's forces are being taken out? SHOW US! And what is just as bad is the characterization. They explicitly say in the first fifteen minutes that Sonic was kidnapped and tortured, so you'd expect him to act differently, and get his carefree, funloving attitude back by the end, but no. Zavok frees Sonic to fight him and Sonic the abuse victim, does some springy steps and shouts "kICkiNg yOuR BuTT!111!!!!" In fact, why did Zavok let Sonic out? Explain! Everyone acts so out of character. They could've explained that half a year at war made them change, but everyone just acts like it's normal. [link omitted per site rules]
    The story doesn't intrigue me, I hate the characters, the writing is terrible, nothing is interesting because of the insistence on text walls. The gameplay is just so basic and boring. I feel so sad seeing that nowadays Sonic is no longer distinctive. Sonic has become the crowd he originally tried to stand out from. SEGA is so afraid to take risks and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of them ditching decent ideas because they made awful business. I'm sick of them recycling things from games that sold.    … Expand

    While it looks and sounds great on an S-rank run, regular play is messy and unsatisfying. Mania's Classic Sonic must wonder what nightmare dimension he got sucked into. [Jan 2017, p.90]

    As the latest generation of the Sonic series, Sonic Forces retains the high-speed game experience. To comply with the trend of the times, Sonic Forces reduces the difficulty, hoping to use this strategy will attract new players who have never tried this kind of game. Unfortunately, the length is not sufficient enough to satisfy players, and too much repetitive content makes this game boring.

    The efforts for modern concept of the legend came out of the way. Sonic Forces has obvious problems with the transition between two perspectives as well with the movement and speed. Only customization possibilities and several new weapons saves it from the average.
