And its so much fun as well, I think you can have a great time with the game!

The environments are beautiful, the story is rich with many characters, and the level design is also good. Not on par with Sonic Generations but definitely as good as Sonic Colours. Yes, there are some linear parts but all sonic games have them, but Sonic Forces does provide interesting pathways for you to go through. The earlier levels are quite linear but as you go through the game it gets a lot better. Plus what adds to the replayability is the custom character's Wispons, which also provide alternates path for the character. The boss fights are also very fun to play and challenging, you're gonna have a good time beating all the bosses in the game.

Speaking of custom character, i'm not really into making oc's and customizing, but the game provides you so many extra accessories for completing extra tasks and getting higher ranks and levels, I found myself going back to the custom character's room to see what's new and what fits my liking. I think that's a huge thing for people who are into character customization.

Modern Sonics levels are also pretty fun to play through, although I should mention that the drift is now removed so sonic team have taken a step backwards in terms of controls for Modern Sonic. But the level design is very fun, again, it has linear sections but later in the game the level design really picks up.

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room, Classic Sonic. I was skeptical about classic sonic going into the game like many others, but I gotta say, it's not that bad and I was quite pleasantly surprised. The levels have many multiple pathways and the controls and physics are better than Generations. That being said, it's no where near as good as Sonic Mania but I think that was bound to happen.

So overall, I enjoyed the game from the start and I'd definitely recommend it to Sonic fans but also casual platforming fans. My only complaint is that Modern Sonic's controls could have been better.

The story is quite a great story to see, however it does have its share of issues with pacing and an overall in-cohesive plot, however many moments in the game are great and memorable to shine out. The biggest issues in forces is the level design which at times can feel lazy and overall plain and simple, while not bad, not what I want to see in a sonic game. The shortness of these levels is another issue, while enjoyable is a little short lived in most cases. Sonic Forces is a game with its fair share of issues that cannot surpass generations however is a great overall experience to be had! Expand

I'd say it's a very fun new adventure, I especially liked the character customization. So many options and accessories for you own character, unlocked by getting higher ranks. I also like the Wispons a lot, they put an interesting twist on the gameplay increasing the replay value, as different wispons have different paths made for them. I also enjoyed the story as it's dark and keeps you interested in the game, but at the same time doesn't take itself too seriously as it is a sonic game.

The Modern sonic stages were also really fun with the boost gameplay, and the boss stages were a delight to play. I don't particularly enjoy the fully 2D Classic level but they weren't bad.

Final Score: 9 out of 10, A fun new exciting adventure :)

    Cons:
    • The gameplay and level design just doesn't stand up to the quality of Sonic Generations, Colours, or the day stages in Unleashed. Forces' gameplay feels much more "on rails" and the levels are much shorter. (Classic Sonic also seems to have some physics issues that weren't in Generations).
    • The story is pretty uninspiring, with much of it told in text/voice on the world map.
    • The game is short.

After finishing the story, and feeling so disappointed that this wasn't a step up on Generations, I'm not much interest to go back and play it more. It's not as bad a game as some say, but because it's such a let down compared to what a "Generations 2" or a later game should have been, I'm not going to rate it higher.

Where was the chaos emeralds and special stages, where was Super Sonic, where was a fun hub world, and what's with all the hand-holding and quick time events. Thankfully, we've still got Generations on PC, which is the best way to play 3D Sonic.

Sonic forces is a fantastic game, but not what a lot of people would expect it to turn out into.
A lot of focus was put into developing a story that turns characters like Eggman into a real menace and the narrative was given much more of a better treatment and it certainly makes Forces seem well structured narrative wise. Not something I'm expecting to see from a Sonic game these days,

A lot of focus was put into developing a story that turns characters like Eggman into a real menace and the narrative was given much more of a better treatment and it certainly makes Forces seem well structured narrative wise. Not something I'm expecting to see from a Sonic game these days, but all the while, a very solid re-enforcement to pay respect to. Sega does deserve to be praised whenever they do succeed in any department, more so since they could had easily just went the cheesy-dialog style last presented to us on Lost World.
New to the franchise is the ability to create and customize your own avatar to be shown in all of his glory. This is very well executed with a whole lot of gear options and lots to chose from several races with unique ability's in game to further fuel up game replayability.
Music is spot on, surely pulls a beat of which to remember as times go on. Lyrics make a comeback and they sure help convey the feeling of the world surrounding you with some unique tracks that will most certainly help captivate the level feel. All and all, a fantastic job done here, I'm glad they went with this route.
Graphics are suberb, truly on a level that not many people would expect, if I had to describe it in a word: "Clean". Everything is smooth and pretty to look at.
Physics are slippery at best, a vast downgrade from that of Generations I feel.
UI looks clean, smooth, can't help but feel Atlus had a word to say on this department, good to know Sega is taking notes from his new ally. Its good to see when good things come together.
Now on to the real deal here: Levels. Levels are a mixture of thoughts for me, as they chose an approach many people (such as myself) may feel alienated towards. Levels are short, with not much room to explore, which is definitely different from what was presented to us in Generations (which is also the game they proudly claim to be the team behind), so its only to expect people would come aboard the Forces train with that level feel in mind. Well, its really not.
Albeit the levels are well executed and certainly interesting, level mechanics do somewhat of make a comeback which is a delight to see, levels do seem more bland and uninspired than Generations. However, and I say this from personal thought after thoughtfully analyzing what was realistically happening here, this decision seems to me made on purpose. They chose to have a multitude of levels grasping from Classic/Modern & Avatar and chose to make each of them pieces that only by playing as the three of them, do you make an entire level.
Now I'm not going to defend this decision, I would be much more pleased to see levels brought to the level of mastery as presented in Generations. However, if I'm to look past this and understand that this was a choice, Levels still stand fairly well on themselves, just, I don't feel they are levels people would replay as much as, say, Green Hill from Generations.
This game feels very cinematic, and I say this as a good thing, the game thrives in these moments more than I initially thought it would drive away from the experience. Albeit I'd like a bit more interaction, they are strong elements that are still a plus on my book.
Missions also make a comeback, and they differ from your usual S rank from which you can probably easily acquire through much of your first level attempts, these are much more challenging, and albeit I don't believe one justify's the other, at least it gives you more to do if you wish to have a 100% completion bonus, which as you do get your S ranks, you unlock your prizes for your own Avatar character.
There's also competitive mode to enthusiasm players who have a thing for the leaderboards and it certainly is very welcoming to see it back, so elements such as these will help making the game feel bulkier. Speaking of which, this is a bigger game than Generations (at least on a lock-on end goal marathon, can't really say as much if accounting for 100%), it does feel more polished which is a joy to see, just I don't personally think there's as much replay value to be found here in terms of individual levels. Sure you may get a kick of your avatar and it does help that everything else in the game is pushing you to customize your avatar more and more with cinematics to re-enforce how great he/she looks in-game, but if we're to look at what's the real thing you'll be playing, I feel level design does make the pass, in all fairness, but it would become such a stronger game if they tries to rival the absolutely fantastic level design experience that was brought to us in Generations. Personal thoughts here, but I'm sure a lot of people can agree here.

Last note: I gave this game a 10. It's not worth a 10. Why did I rate it 10? Look around you, with the amounts of scores under 40, there's no other way to balance this.
    My true rating: 7.8

So when I heard that Sonic Forces was going to be a game like sonic unleashed, a dark story, a new engine, a boost to win title on next-gen consoles, and a fresh coat a paint for the series, I couldn't wait for it! Unfortunately, this game didn't live up to the previous games released along with sonic mania. Heres my review!

Plot: No spoilers for obvious reasons, but to sum things up. Sonic is defeated and apparently "tortured" for 6 months, in that time frame, Eggman takes over 99% of the world, which causes sonic's friends along with your custom character (called Avatar or Rookie) to create a resistance (star wars much?) to stop Eggman and defeat his new creation, Infinite. They later meet back up with tails and classic sonic, coming back from Sonic Mania to complete its story or something? Though this story is interesting, its execution is horrible, and the later parts of the story suck due to the villains being dumb as rocks and a force message about teamwork or something. Not a good way to do a "dark" story, oh and sonic wasn't tortured if he is still happy and go lucky. 3/10

Gameplay: It's split up into three sections, Modern Sonic, Avatar, and Classic Sonic. Modern Sonic is the same boost to win formula as the previous games since sonic unleashed. It's well done, and nice to see again, but I wish it were more of a different take on speedy 3d platforming. The avatar gameplay is decent, you get to make your character and uses his wisp power to get through the level somewhat like the Modern Sonic stages. They're alright, not much, but nice to play. Then we get Classic Sonic... Sigh. Boy, was Classic Sonic wasted. Its just CS from Generations again, and the stages are kinda dull, and it controls awful. They should have removed him and had more stages with the Avatar and Modern Sonic. Speaking of Modern Sonic and Avatar, they have some stages where you play as both trying to get to the end of the level, using double boost at least once during the stage, they're better, but nothing special again. It seems like Sonic Team played it safe with this game, and it backfired severely in they're faces. They should have done a new gameplay style like Sonic Lost World or Mario Oddsey, the boost to win formula should have been retired before this game because it's not 100% fun anymore like Generations or Unleashed. It was still fun, but not as fun as I would have liked. 5/10

Audio: The soundtrack is one of the best in the Sonic series, it's more cinematic, but its also filled with more sonic like music like fist bump and infinite's themes. More songs would be nice though, but still high quality. 9/10

Bosses: Disappointing as well, the mini-bosses are way too easy, and the FInal Boss is also a joke. Take one look at the final boss (if you completed the game) and tell me it's not like the one from Colors and Lost World! 3/10

Summary: Sonic Forces is a huge disappointment for me. The boost to win gameplay is fun, and so is the avatar and double gameplay. The soundtrack is fantastic and is one of the best sonic soundtracks along with sonic mania. However, the story, while it has a good idea, it's not well executed and a huge disappointment, it's not even that dark! Not to mention the Classic Sonic gameplay is pointless and can be removed from the game, and nothing would change. I wish this could have been the game to bring 3d sonic to the next gen, but instead, it has me wishing for more, and for someone else to give this series some justice just like Sonic Mania did. Sega, if you're listening to this, please let someone else make a sonic game, enough of the hedgehog engine, enough of Denuvo DRM and crashes, please have it open world or whatever with no DRM, and something that's not 2d again and helps gives the franchise some new life. Also, P.S. DON'T RUSH IT!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although Sonic Forces doesn't advance the series in any manner except for allowing two lines of games (classic and modern). It is still a fun adventure, the levels are the right length although could've used more variety. It is clear to see they invested the most time in the avatar and it pays off it has countless costumes etc and a good customisation system. The soundtrack for the game is great not better than Unleashed, Colours, Generations or the Adventure titles but some feel good tracks that work trying to stop Eggman. The boss fights are better than what they are claimed to be and the story although is dark is very orientated towards children also. Sonic has the same attitude and Eggman has actually almost gone back to his Adventure 2 villainy. Now infinite is the ultimate edgy villain but seems a downright idiot with some of his choices. The way they explain the returning characters through infinite making copies with the phantom ruby makes sense but the climax isn't as huge as it could be. The visuals is great a mix between generations and lost world and the hedgehog engine 2 is really played well here. The difficulty has some random spikes that are frustrating but overall is a mellow, easy game even on hard difficulty. If you're expecting a revolutionising adventure this isn't for you but if you're looking for a game you can just blast through, have fun and a Sonic game that isn't bad nor amazing this is good for you. It isn't better than Mania but it is still a worthy title with what looks to be a step in the right direction again. Also if you want lack of automation and really good physics again won't find it here. It has fun, unexpected twists in stages, amazing graphics and soundtrack, story could be better but is an improvement over a lack of story in recent years and good gameplay. Classic Sonic however didn't need to be in here and seems only to connect Mania and Forces as one. But it's worth the £28 I brought it for. Expand

Sonic Forces is great. Sonic purists will probably stone me for this, but I enjoyed Forces more than Mania. The sense of speed is incredible and Sonic is faster than ever before. The controls have also improved and they're tighter and more precise than before. Gone are the ice physics of Unleashed and Generations that sometimes made it easy to lose control of Sonic. This time you're always in control. Sonic's homing attack is much faster and smoother than before and combat never becomes tedious. Classic Sonic's inclusion seems unnecessary and his stages were definitely my least favorite part of the game.

The avatar plays similarly to modern Sonic. They can't run as fast, but they can use wisp weapons (or "wispons") to grapple and attack. It's surprisingly fun. Wispons have unique properties that change up the gameplay a bit and allow the avatar to take different routes. You're encouraged to switch wispons to fully explore stages.

The avatar creator is rather limited, but it makes up for it by the large amount of costume part you can collect. There's at least 500 of them, possibly even more. The race of your avatar also slightly changes your play style, as each race has a unique ability. Birds can double jump, cats keep one ring when they take a hit and drop all their rings, wolves pull rings towards them and so on.

The game has quite a lot of replay value as well. Collect red stars, go for S ranks, do time attacks, complete daily missions or SOS missions, there's always something to do. Each level your avatar completes gives them experience points, and each completed task rewards you with more costume parts.

As for presentation, Sonic Forces looks and sounds fantastic. The game's interface is very stylish, the levels are absolutely beautiful to look at. There's so much stuff going on in the background that it's almost shame you zoom past all that in a matter of seconds. Voice acting is surprisingly solid by Sonic standards. Music is also great, the combination of a live orchestra and techno/electronic music is brilliant and really suits the style of the game. My only complaint is that the pre-rendered cutscene towards the end of the game looks very pixelated on a 4K TV. The rest of the game is very sharp and looks great, though.

Overall, I love this game and I had a blast playing it. There's still a lot of content to unlock and I'll be coming back to Forces for a long time. If you like modern Sonic game style, you'll enjoy this game. If you prefer classic Sonic instead, this probably isn't for you. Stick with Mania for now.

The gameplay has improved, with Modern Sonic having great controls and a good balance to the boost. Classic Sonic is also vey fun with the all-new drop dash. The avatar has also very interesting gameplay with the wispons. Its also great to see your own customizable avatar every time you run through a stage with different clothes.

The story is better than your average Sonic Colours and Generations with a stronger plot. Although they wasted potential of having supersonic in the story and just ends with a normal final boss.

Level design is weak though and stages can be short, even though Generations did a fantastic job with it. But the overall speed and platforming can make stages fun along with the upbeat music.

Overall Sonic Forces, while a step down from Generations with level design, doesn't stop it from being a great game with great music, graphics and gameplay.

I am a long time sonic fan with a deep appreciation for sonic 1-3, sonic cd, sonic and knuckles, sonic mania, sonic racing transformed (such a perfect kart racer) and sonic generations. I know a lot of Sonic fanboys are not going to be happy with my review of this game but I'm not going to give such a wasted opportunity a pass simply because it's Sonic.

The game fails terribly in two areas that matter the most, gameplay and level design. I can forgive a terrible story, average graphics, annoying voice overs but i cannot forgive bad gameplay design and bad level design.

    This game has:
-terrible level design with many very very short levels.
-modern sonic gameplay makes me feel like I'm watching someone else play the game with the amount of cutscene animations that pop up during levels.
-classic sonic has a very weird feeling when you jump. It is as though you jump in the air at a certain momentum and then drop really heavily, suddenly and awkwardly.
-using your avatar character is not fun at all and confuses the sonic formula. I believe they have wasted good time and resources on such an unnecessary feature

It is just sadly not a good game. It really is heartbreaking because i thought Sega had finally found their winning formula with sonic generations but it seems that they have ignored key parts of that formula that worked. I know the Sega Sonic team can make a great game because they made the amazing sonic generations and the amazing puyo puyo tetris so its very confusing that this game has turned out so badly. It's a sad day for Sonic fans.

Simply put i wouldn't bother wasting your money buying this game. Go pick up something like sonic mania, sonic racing transformed or sonic generations and relive some of Sonic's better days.

Hopefully the future holds something better for the ball in blue.

    Amazing music
    Custom character
    Amazing boss fights
    Cons:
    Stiff controls
    Short stages

All in all, this game has clearly specified it’s objective as a 3D sonic platformer. Hope for a bit longer levels in future games.

I played Sonic Forces for about an hour and a half to two hours, and I can definitely see why people aren't saying this game is amazing. The biggest issue with the game that I can see is the level design. It just feels like the level layouts are lazily slapped together, with no variety in the design whatsoever. It feels like you just go right and blow away every enemy in sight. The biggest issue with the game that I can see is the level design. It just feels like the level layouts are lazily slapped together, with no variety in the design whatsoever. It feels like you just go right and blow away every enemy in sight. I liked Sonic Generations because it provided an interesting challenge, and it didn't just have you going in one direction-- it encouraged you to explore each level and find your way around.

While the level design may be bad in this game, other aspects of the game are actually quite good. The music is really awesome, as per usual even in the worst of 3D Sonic games. The graphics are GORGEOUS. I was playing this on my 4K TV, and I was blown away with the amount of detail in the graphics. The story is actually pretty enticing, and I can see myself actually interested in finishing the game just to see the ending. The avatar creation system, believe it or not, is actually really well done and is very versatile. Also from what I can tell, Classic Sonic's physics appear to be a little bit improved. The addition of the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania is awesome! I also loved hearing the orchestral musical cues from Sonic Mania when they first introduced him in the story.

Overall, there's definitely a lot to like about this game, but I can't give it a 10 out of 10. Innovative and creative level designs with a good amount of variety to engage the player is essential for a game to be fun, and unfortunately that's what Sonic Forces lacks. It's just way too easy and there's no challenge. But the presentation and everything else is stellar. It just sucks that such wonderful art assets, music, and ideas were wasted on lackluster gameplay. The game is at least playable though-- there aren't any noticeable glitches from what I've played so far. In conclusion, this game's okay, but not great.

Ill divide my review on various parts, to explain my opinion as pure as possible:

    STORY:

Its kinda good, not gonna lie. For the "GOOD" part, the idea of Eggman actually ruling the entire world for various months is pretty nice, and the fact he actually tortured Sonic for once its... pretty interesting i would say... also, including old and new bosses adds a nice touch (old, talking about Chaos and Metal Sonic, and new, talking about zavok).

for the "OK" part, the introduction of infinite is kinda weird, because you need to play Episode Shadow to understand how all begins, which is not a very nice decision from Sega, but i will let it pass...

And the implementation of the OC Avatar is very simple, just a survivor that wanted to join the resistance isnt very attractive.

for the "Not Good" part, Classic Sonic appeared just out of nowhere, not even sure how or why the idea of Classic Sonic appearing out of nowhere was a cool idea :(

also, in some of the trailers of the game, you see shadow as part of the bad guys, when in the game you cant even fight him (either Chaos) which is kinda disappointing, but oh well...

    PLAYABILITY/GAME ASPECTS:

Its ok... its not like they introduced something new to the playability (because we have the casual Modern Sonic running the same line all over again, Classic Sonic with the 2D enviroment), except the things that the OC Avatar can do, that can change depending of the animal you choose, which it add a bit more of replay value, but excluding that, its just like any other sonic game (this doesnt mean thats bad... just kinda repetitive)

About the game aspects, for the "GOOD" part, voice acting is good and the quality is nice in all versions of the game, pretty smooth and good looking.

in the "OK" part, the AI of the NPCs isnt as good as previous games, in the Modern Sonic stages they dont even try to hurt you, which is kinda understandable, since the main goal of those stages is just run in a straight line, but it makes it too easy IMO, they should at least try to hurt you, not just be there, wasting space. In the Classic Sonic stages, they look ok.

And in Modern Sonic stages, the checkpoints hitbox seems kinda weird, you can "kinda" go thru it, small detail, since again, the main goal is just run until you reach the end, but its hitbox should be complete.

The stages are fun and pretty colorful, packed with a bit of that nostalgia and feelings, depending of the situations

    DIFFICULTY:

its too easy, comparing it with other sonic games (not as easy as oddysey, but thats a different franchise), the NPCs dont really try to hurt you, they are pretty easy to avoid and destroy as well, most of the stages can be completed very quickly, and overall, you can complete the game in 2 hours, or even less, and im not talking about speedrunning the game... which IMO is not that good, but moving that to a side, some (not all) of the stages can take 2 or 3 tries to understand where you need to go and where you should fall.

    OVERALL:

its ok. As a Sonic fan myself, i think this game had too much hype (and i was hyped too), but im kinda dissapointed, since some things are not as the Trailers promised. But is not as bad some people told me it was going to be, either is as good some people told me too...

Its enjoyable at least, and it gives some fresh air with the OC thing (which im not a fan of, but apparently it was well received, so, i guess ill let that pass too) and i can say its better than Lost World and Boom.

Should you buy it? If you want, or if you are a big Sonic fan, but i wouldnt say this is a title you should really get...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't even care to read the reviews giving it 9 or 10. They're mostly written by fanboys without any kind of critical sense who are trying to put a mask over the negative reception the game is having from both the media and other players. Hopefully they'll notice before late that if they keep doing that, SEGA is going to keep giving them subpar games like this one and nobody will take the franchise seriously anymore.

You know Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors? Even when compared to those games, which are pretty much the best of Modern Sonic, and games that I and lots of people consider quite good, it's simply extremely disappointing. Forces managed to make the impossible: take Generations' formula and do something BAD with it. All levels are EXTREMELY LINEAR. There are almost NO CHALLENGES during the entire game. Even some enemies simply stand still and wait for you to attack them. You can complete the entire game in under 3 HOURS if you skip cutscenes. The game plays itself by you at most times, and you could actually see a very good example of that just by playing the demo: if you held the boost button with Modern Sonic, you would simply progress through most of the stage. And the worst of all: SEGA said this disappointment was in development for 4 YEARS. 4 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT FOR 3 HOURS OF STORY GAMEPLAY, NO CHALLENGE AND SOME MORE CUTSCENES? Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV also had way too long development times, but managed to give us something substantial, even if they had some problems. Sonic Forces simply gives us a hollow experience with no challenges and no personality.

"But muh character customization! Muh Avatar!"

This is by far the most absurd thing ever put in this game. Some people accuse Mania of breaking canon and being a distortion of Sonic's personality as a franchise (when all it did was a tribute to the good old days, which is in no way a distortion of anything), but what breaks canon MORE than a character that doesn't have an actual name, doesn't have a set appearance and doesn't have a personality? That's not to say about several plotholes in Forces' story, such as:

    - How did Classic Sonic escape from Death Egg before the explosion?

    - Why did Classic Sonic simply DISAPPEAR when he went back to his dimension when, in the end of Sonic Mania, he went through a portal between the dimensions?

    - Robotnik was going to destroy the world when he himself was IN THE WORLD?

    - Where did Chaos go?

    - If Infinite got so angry at Shadow (and decided to get stronger because he was humilated), why didn't he seek revenge?

    - Since Classic Sonic and the Phantom Ruby entered the same dimensional portal at the same time, why didn't they exit it at the same location in Modern Sonic's dimension? Classic Sonic appeared at the exact moment he needed to appear in order to save Tails, while Robotnik and the Phantom Ruby simply... met each other in another time and location.

-How come Classic Sonic is the same from Generations and is recognized as such by the other characters if previous official information about Forces and Mania put him as being a Sonic from another dimension?

-And a lot other unexplainable contradictions and poorly explained stuff.

As you can see, for a game which story was heavily shown as a crucial part of it during marketing, this game also disappoints in that aspect. Not only is it short, it is also riddled with plotholes and even conceptual problems, one of them being the entire nature of the Phantom Ruby which retroactively makes a lot of what happened in Mania more confusing than it should be. So yeah, Forces is a piece of **** so big that its story actually detracts from the best Sonic game in 20 years or so. Do yourself a favor and never play this ****. Let's just hope that SEGA does something akin to Colors, Generations or Mania again in the future and does it right this time. Let's also hope that the fanboys notice that SEGA is FORCing subpar games down their throat and they're so hungry they simply accept it without even complaining and give good scores to bad games out of fanboy feelings.

Sonic Forces mixes everything great about Generations and Colors and still manged to get back to good things of the Adventure era, such as vocal and remixed ost, dark story, and Eggman being a good villain. It's safe to say, that it's the 2nd best modern sonic game, only behind Unleashed.

As a whole, Sonic Forces is decent, and is a solid entry to the franchise, but it does have flaws, especially in some level design.
The story's tone is really bizarre, it's very dark and edgy at times but will then jump right back into sonic's normal humorous writing in the same scene, but it's also extremely cheesy and rides heavily on the power of friendship themes.

The avatar creation and customization is the highlight of this game, it provides incentive to re-run stages and try to S-rank everything.
The general gameplay is close to generations, but with less than stellar level design, most stages are very linear and short, but can be enjoyable to replay and get better times on. I noticed a few bugs so far especially with boosting during 3D segments. Avatar stages are probably the most varied due to different weapons having different ways to propel you through the level.
Overall I enjoyed the game but I could recommend waiting for a sale on it, it's not terrible for its $40 pricepoint but unless you're very forgiving of flawed games like myself, I would wait for it to drop a little

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is horrible, the LD is completely linear, the enemies lack artificial intelligence, classic Sonic songs resemble the infamous Sonic 4, the phases are very repetitive and the story is very cliché. The ending is ridiculous, Sonic Classic did not surprise the members of the modern era and the end was a total failure, neither did Modern Sonci give a damn about the classic. The developer thinks that Sonic has to act like a bowling game, which makes racing mechanics look like cell phone racing games. The avatar reminds me a lot of Sonic Boom, the unnecessary introduction of the Wisps is massive, they should not be in this game, Sega could have better explored the elements of Sonic Mania like the classic Eggman, the Titanic Monarch the HBH the emeralds and the Litle Planet. I bet Sega thought about putting this damn Sonic but that changed his mind during the critics. The game is very short and finally can be worse than Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 4 and Sonic 2006. Expand

Also the controls are very stiff, on every charatcer. Classic sonic's physics are terrible. Enemies are just decorarions. They called this a "brand new experience" and not a sequel to generations, and also that they don't want to go back on the sonic franchise. They said all of that and still the game has Green hill, chemical plant and classic sonic...

They’re are a few plot holes in the story which have me puzzled at times? Like how Eggman received the Phantom Ruby or whatever happened to Eggman and Infinite after the final boss fight. Those tiny bits left me scratching my head, hopefully this will be resolved with the next game in the franchise. Level design here is acceptable, its not as perfect as Unleashed, but it’s surely manageable. Some stages can be beaten within a minute while others can be beaten within 2-3 minutes if it’s your first try. SEGA has given the younger developers some time with the level design; giving it that fresh to lazy feel. Nonetheless you’ll have fun blazing fast through Eggman’s defenses. The music, of course with every Sonic game, is top notch, Tomoya Ohtani and The London Symphony Orchestra nailed it with this game. Without a doubt you’ll have favorite tunes, you’ll love one more than another without a doubt.
The game isn’t bad, any Sonic will have fun with this. The story is straightforward, you’re able to create your own character, there’s plenty of collectibles, you’re given a short, but free, DLC pack that includes the prologue story featuring Shadow. In my honest opinion, I enjoyed every bit of this game, beautiful soundtrack, high speed action, customizable characters. To me, personally, I’ll remember this game as a saving point for SEGA. It’s great!

I'm honestly surprised this is getting good user reviews when it is all the worst parts of generations and colors combined. The game is too short, the level design is too basic and narrow, and it's too easy. But as someone who used to be a Sonic fan for years upon years starting back in 2007, I should've predicted this. The game is too short, the level design is too basic and narrow, and it's too easy. But as someone who used to be a Sonic fan for years upon years starting back in 2007, I should've predicted this. The fans can hold onto this game all they want to cling on to any hope they have left, but once the critic reviews come out, it'll be hard for the user score to be taken seriously unless it goes down as well.

Now don't get me wrong, I'd love Sonic to succeed. I'd adore a new Sonic game that is actually good. But this one isn't because Sonic Team keeps making the same stupid decisions. Let's start with the story. Ever since Sonic Colors, the blue blur has been slowly heading down a path similar to a bad cheesy shonen anime. There's an overabundance of incredibly stale and cheesy humor, an overly edgy and uninteresting villain, and mindless dribble about the power of friendship. I couldn't tell if I was playing a Fairy Tail or My Little Pony game. The marketing for Sonic Forces was as sneaky as a snake. It wants you to believe Eggman has won and that all hope is lost, but in the actual games story it doesn't feel like that at all. Making some of the stages look like a post apocalyptic city just isn't enough for me.

And that brings us to the stages. These have to be some of the most uncreative levels Sonic has seen in a long time, not including his Boom incident. If it's not a stage rehashing a classic theme like Green Hill or Chemical Planet, then it's a generic burning city or generic lab with the same browns and grays every time. Not to mention that with the level design being as basic and lazy as some of the New Super Mario Bros. games, it's hard to tell each level apart, At least the New Super Mario Bros. games had gameplay, Sonic doesn't even have that.

While nothing is horribly glitchy and broken as we've come to expect with the blue blur, they've definitely downgraded from previous installments that use this boost-to-win gameplay. Because the levels are so basic and narrow, most stages can be won by running forward and holding the boost. It's nearly impossible to take any hits from how incredibly easy Sonic Team gives it to the players. The customizable character has nothing to offer either despite being marketed as the selling point for the game. It plays way too similarly to modern Sonic, and all the rewards in the game are based on unlocks for this character you'll care nothing about. The creator is bland and his weapon based gameplay is bland. One weapon seems to do the trick for everything in the game so there's no reason to use anything else. Then we get to Classic Sonic. He's just not good. Again, the level design is some of the most basic and bland we've seen in the series, and with Classic Sonic's awkward gameplay, they're the worst. Thankfully he has the least amount of stages in the game, and will have you wonder why he's even in there to begin with. His physics don't match his old Sega Genesis self, not even close. This is especially disappointing considering we got Sonic Mania earlier this year which was a masterpiece in 2D platforming.

Even something the Sonic series almost never fails on still ends up lackluster here. The music. Oh what have they done to the music. Sure you may have heard the main theme and likely enjoy it very much. But that's the only good part of the music. Anything else in the games soundtrack with some sort of quality is just an alternate rendition of the theme. When it's not just another remix of the theme song, it's super trance, techno, dubstep trash with no memorable beats or melodies to hum when on a car ride. Sonic typically excels in the music department, but this time the blue blur struck a sour note.

Overall, Sonic Forces is a failure, proving that Sonic Team can indeed ruin anything if they put their minds to it. While I wasn't a fan of how easy Colors and Generations were, I could at least see them as competent games. But here, Sonic Team took everything people liked about those previously mentioned games and dumbed them down hardcore while making the bad things more present. It's pretty sad when the fans can make a better Sonic game than Sonic Team itself with Sonic Mania. Take notes Sega.

It's a decent game, nothing more than you would expect from the blue bur himself. Soundtrack is great as always, levels are short and somewhat mediocre for Sonic Team (except the ones that standout from the rest). Character creation is perfect and has possibilities. A recommended buy for anybody who wants to get into Sonic. Recommend the Switch version for portability over graphics.

The most well-constructed phases are those of Sonic Classic, but even so, with a super amateur platform, at the Sonic 4: Episode 1 level.

    Good:
    > Customizable character
    > Soundtrack
    > Action scenes
    > Graphics

    Bad:
    > The zones are a great straight line
    > The horrific physics of the Generations Sonic Classic remains.
    > Low platform
    > Holes in history
    > Lack of creativity
    > Some enemies do not attack
    > For what 30 zones if all of them last 2 or 3 minutes?
    > Excessive marketing for little thing

Because it is an AAA game that has had 4 years of development, a much better job is expected.
Sonic Mania recycles several things, and this is not good, but the fact is that having a low budget and a small team, he went much further. They were able to create something as ambitious as Unleashed, but their execution was very modest compared to the amount of marketing they received.

I LOVE SONIC, I play since I was little. I put a little expectation in this game and I was disappointed.
    It's a lousy platform and a medium-sized action game.

    PONTOS FORTES:

    VALE A PENA?

Of course this game it's not the best ever but c'mon, it's not bad at all. I've been playing today and i beat the first 6 levels plus the extra level and the game is so much fun. It's bad. Short levels, mediocre story, and some puzzling design decisions. Sega should be embarrassed that a team of fans put together a better game than their employees. You can beat the game in a very short amount of time. 30 levels seems like a lot, but when each level is 1-2 minutes long... yeah. It's really a big disappointment.

Modern & Classic Sonic all play very similarity to how they played in generations, and the Custom Hero plays very well as well. For Modern Sonic, his stages are mostly 3D with some 2D platforming parts. (Like Colors.) And Classic Sonic handles very well like in Generations And Mania. The physics has been ever-so-slightly been improved over Generations, but again, could benefit from some improvements. The controls for the Custom Hero can feel a bit unresponsive at times but does not ruin the core gameplay. And even though I feel like this game could've been better overall, I still do recommend this game to all Platforming fans and Sonic fans. Definitely a 9/10 from me. Expand

As the latest generation of the Sonic series, Sonic Forces retains the high-speed game experience. To comply with the trend of the times, Sonic Forces reduces the difficulty, hoping to use this strategy will attract new players who have never tried this kind of game. Unfortunately, the length is not sufficient enough to satisfy players, and too much repetitive content makes this game boring.

The efforts for modern concept of the legend came out of the way. Sonic Forces has obvious problems with the transition between two perspectives as well with the movement and speed. Only customization possibilities and several new weapons saves it from the average.
