From what I played, it seems pretty stable. A lot of it does at least check out. Honestly none of the new features really change anything. With that said, the original Wii game was great, so this is technically great too. Honestly the thing that threw me off was that fact that O was the default boost button, not the square button. It just that this port was clearly rushed, and this is something that constantly happens in Sonic. And that has lead to stuff like Sonic 06 and plenty of other Sonic flops. Just seeing it still being practice here, is not just not a good sign for Frontier. But this is fun, but I would still give this a cautious recommendation. Expand

A horrendously bad, buggy re-release of one of the worst sonic games. The only redeemable things about Sonic colors are the act 1's of each stage, the music, and unique level locales. Everything else is hot garbage. This "remaster" looks worse than the original game 90% of the time, and the remixed music is almost always a miss too. The writing and story in this game are awful. Although this doesn’t effect the game, it’s hilarious the end credits are 30 minutes long. The game is pretty average. Nothing all too special but a bit of fun to be had.

This game is barely enjoyable. It is clearly a cash grab made by Sega, While it is not that buggy anymore it's just, not Ultimate like it says on the title. Only difference are the graphics and the new features. I like this game a bit, but it was not a good job done by Sega.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s Decent. Played through it, had an okay time but Colors has always been one of the mediocre games in the series. Level design is super blocky and you only get about 8-10 percent of the game in full 3D control. Despite that, I had a pretty decent time playing throughout the story. I thought the graphical improvements were great, despite all of the bugs. Throughout my playthrough, I didn’t experience that many bugs, but still some stuff that’s unacceptable for a triple A remaster. Horrible audio mixing, barely any quality of life improvements except the very limited customizable controls, horrible pop in, and more. I am not blaming the development team for this because, frankly, this shouldn’t be a thing. They had to go try and port all the game’s code into a brand new engine, and I think they did a great job with the gameplay, just not the graphical side of things, but that can be fixed. Other than some other “things” mainly on the switch port, I did not have a bad time with the game. It was nice to see SEGA finally release a real sonic game again. And even though this one is really rough around the edges, this gives me hope for new, more polished remasters for games that (IMO) deserve it much more like Unleashed, 06, SA2, Heroes, and more. (Especially Unleashed and Heroes). Other than that, decent time, if your feeling sonic deprived, pick it up, (just not for the switch). Expand

There's a bit of a perception that Sonic Colors saved the Sonic franchise when it came all the way back in 2010. In fact, it was viewed as a refreshing change of pace to the games that came before. In retrospect, there are a lot of flaws about the game that are very hard to overlook, things like the incredibly short campaign that takes maybe a few hours at best to complete.

There's a feeling of cheapness about Colors from its writing, cutscene animation, to the amount of content it originally had. But this is Colors Ultimate, and it does have more content than the original game with unlockable cosmetic option to encourage replaying through levels. That would be great, if most of the levels were fun to play through. Unfortunately, only the first level of every act is really any good, and the rest were very apparently made to extend the gameplay length of the game artificially. Only people who really want to acquire all achievements would see any worth in playing through those levels again. Not to mention, for a 3d Sonic title game, over half the gameplay time it actually 2d.

Having said all those negatives, there are positives. The finale of Colors is memorable and exciting, and even though the wisps go on to be unwelcome additions to Sonic games games after Colors, they were and still are a fun part of Sonic Colors.

Overall, I'd recommend anyone who hasn't played Sonic Colors to get Ultimate, since it is basically Colors but with more content. At the moment there are some glitches that need to be patched, but that will most likely be done in time. People have also pointed out that there are a few visual differences in Ultimate, such as more bloom, than the original Colors. I'm going to be controversial and say I actually like Bloom. Also, they remixed the soundtrack and it's very give and take.

    Overall, a Mixed bag.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For someone who never really got a chance to try Sonic Colors back when I owned a wii, I finally got to play Sonic Colors Ultimate on a modern console. Here's my review:
    Pros:
    - For a story that began the writing of the "meta era" this is so much better than the games we get later on.
    - The graphics in my opinion look very good. It makes Sonic Colors feel more beautiful than the original (from gameplay footage I've seen from the wii)
    - The new homing attack system feels so satisfying. It shows you some skill of how to time your attacks perfectly against enemies which I find very fresh.
    - The wisps were a great addition to Sonic. Even tho I think they have been over used too much later on the series, this was a pretty neat addition.
    - The new Rival Rush is my favorite, it gets pretty challenging especially in Sweet Mountain which got me sweating for awhile.
    - The cosmetics are very cool. I hope they continue to do this for now on. It adds plenty of replayability to the game.

    Cons-
    - As much as I like the story, the dialogue in this game is not even funny. A character stays on the joke too and them explains about the joke which I don't find it amusing. It should have taken some notes from Sonic Unleashed.
    - The bugs in this game are everywhere. Hopefully these glitches will be patched later on.
    - This game relies on the 2D sections a bit too much which makes it boring.
    - The brightness in this game is just too damn bright that I might watch the sun rather than this game.

Therefore, Sonic Colors Ultimate is an okay game.

This is a huge downside to the game causing seizures and corruptions with still more to come.however, this game is still bearable but not for its full price.

Sonic has been going downhill for 13 years, but it's never gotten so bad as to actually be dangerous to those with sensitivities to flashing hellscapes. If we can't trust them to rehash and resell the only acceptable game they made in the last decade, how are we ever gonna trust them to do anything with this IP ever again? Please, Sega, sell Sonic to someone else. Anyone else.

SEGA, once again, made the mistake of rushing a Sonic the Hedgehog project and it turned out to be a complete piece of crap. These raises concerns for the upcoming 2022 game and make me question if SEGA really cares about Sonic as much as Persona or Yakuza, because it doesn't look like it.

I was super disappointed in this remaster since I loved the original Sonic Colors when it came out. I don't think Ultimate is horrible like others are saying but there's still a lot of issues.

The graphical glitches everyone's seen on Twitter and Reddit seem to be missing from this version which is a relief. I didn't encounter anything like those at all. However I got something worse.

The graphical glitches everyone's seen on Twitter and Reddit seem to be missing from this version which is a relief. I didn't encounter anything like those at all. However I got something worse. My save file got corrupted. The game froze. The music kept playing but nothing worked. I couldn't do anything to 'unfreeze' it. So I had to restart everything and found my save file was corrupt. I won't lie, for the original Colors it wouldn't be THAT much of a hassle but Ultimate is different. There's a lot of new stuff to do and collect so losing my save really sucks. I started over but still. This shouldn't have happened.

I also had a couple other glitches like the rails in Tropical Resort not working correctly. I tried to switch rails and it shot me into the air and I died. It happened again and I have no idea what causes it since I switched rails plenty of other times and it was perfectly fine. It seems random. Also had a problem with clipping through the floor in Aquarium Park and Asteroid Coaster.
People complain about Tails Saves making the game too easy but it sure is nice when stuff like this happens. But of course the glitches shouldn't be here in the first place...

As for everything else, it's fine. People complained about the bloom and the lighting and textures but I think it all looks great, minus the cutscenes. They REALLY should have been redone.

There are some things that I really loved and that's the remixes and new Red Star Ring locations. Music is subjective but I like most of the new tracks. They changed around the locations for some of the Red Star Rings to make use of the Jade Wisp and it feels great having to explore.

So why am I giving this a 4/10? The original Colors for me is a solid 8/10. Losing my save file instantly made this a 0/10. But... I restarted the game anyway and mostly beat it (still working on 100%) and didn't run into the problem again. I guess it's a very rare glitch but I know other people have run into it too. I feel like just giving it a 0/10 is totally unfair. If I didn't lose my save file I think I would rate the game at around 6-7/10. While I love the new additions (yes even Tails Saves), I feel like it's just not enough, not to mention the other glitches and jankiness not present in the original.
    So, 3-4/10.

I don't know if I can recommend this. I would say wait for another patch. I have no idea when that will happen since Sega is going to be extremely busy with the crazy graphical glitches on the Switch. I'm not sure the PS4 version will be a priority for them which sucks.

As a guy who played the original Wii version of Sonic Colors, while nowhere near the masterpieces like Sonic Unleashed or Generations, it's still a pretty solid Sonic game. However, Sonic Colors Ultimate has to be one of the worst remasters and Sonic games of all time combined.

First off, I'll give credit where credit is due, the game at least tries to be a remaster, unlike it cash-grab

First off, I'll give credit where credit is due, the game at least tries to be a remaster, unlike it cash-grab competitor, Skyward Sword HD, it remixes music (even if poorly), it actually "enhanced" the graphics (even though everything is either too dark, too bright, and way too much bloom), and it adds new content (again, even if poorly).

Most of the remixed music sounds either off or straight up awful, like Tropical Resort Act 1 with it's weird piano, most of the remixed music in Sweet Mountain, Planet Wisp with it sounding too fast pace and upbeat when it shouldn't be, etc. and you CAN'T change back to the original. Strangely enough, the only pieces of music that actually sounded better than the original version was the lyrical tracks (Speak with your heart especially, Ultimate version sound like a nice, grand conclusion while the Original sound like a ending credits for a TV show).

The visuals have worsen in quality compared to the originals (and unlike the music, there's no redeeming part of the visuals). Sonic's eyes pupils don't move, he's WAY too bright, and the stages are actually worse. Tropical Resort, which at one point was filled with life, looks way too dark and lifeless, and some levels like Aquarium Park and especially Starlight Carnival are way too bright and the only levels that looks comparable to the Original is Asteroid Coaster and maybe Sweet Mountain.

The new Tails save is broken and kind of unnecessary. The game was already easy enough, and the Tails save makes it easier than a education Nintendo DS kids game. They make checkpoint basically useless, since when you die, Tails puts you back to the nearest platform instead of respawning to the last checkpoint sign you touched, and your progress is safe and sound instead of what it was like when you met the checkpoint (and just like the music, you can't have it back to the original).

The new Jade Wisp seems to be the best addition of the remaster. You can go though (some) walls and floors and access parts of the level that were at one point just background piece. While flawed (and sometimes leads to gameplay bugs), it's still a nice addition to the remaster.

The cosmetics don't do much. You purchase them from the new Park Tokens found across the levels, and all they do is make Sonic have different gloves and shoes, that's it.

The Metal Sonic races are pretty bad to say the least. First off, when you select a level, it just pops up, no animations, no fading, nothing. It looks like a virus pop up. And the races themselves are underwhelming. Metal Sonic (who by the way glitches out every so often) is kind of boring. And some of the levels, like Starlight Carnival and Asteroid Coaster, aren't made for racing since half of the time, it's just automated.

And finally, the horrible cherry on top, the glitches. Every glitch you can imagine is in this game. Sonic and the world around him becoming seizure/epilepsy heaven, objects popping in and out of existence, you glitching though the floor and being stuck there for eternity, being flung into the air at a speed of around a million miles per minute, models being distorted, game save corrupt screens, Audio issues and much, much more. Even Sonic 06 and Rise of Lyric didn't have this amount of glitches.

Overall, after the wasted potential and abysmal disaster that is Sonic Forces, the mediocrity that is Team Sonic Racing, I was hoping that this remaster could be excellent after seeing the disasters of Mario 3D All Stars and Skyward Sword HD, but instead, I've been struck with another disaster from Sega. Ever since Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric, it has only gotten worse, Sonic Forces, Team Sonic Racing, and now, Sonic Colors Ultimate. Being a fan of this series is hard, and having 7 years of nothing but one good Sonic game (which is Sonic Mania) and the rest being awful, I don't have high hope for Sonic Rangers and Origins, and this game could have been a great remaster, but instead, it became another sucker punch for the blue blur. Don't buy it at all costs and if you want to experience Sonic Colors, get the Wii version.

Sonic Colors Ultimate amps up the graphics and has great new additions to the original game. In my experience I had no glitches or crashes (Doesn't mean others will not have this problem). The game successfully carries over the magic of what made the original so special.

Colours is not a "return to form," or "what resurrected the franchise." It was just a decent game from an outsiders perspective, and the first game in a while that didn't have any MAJOR gameplay issues (Werehog, 06 glitches, Shadow the hedgehog games overall weird themes and story path picking). In you look at Colours as a Sonic the Hedgehog game compared to ALL of the games both releasedColours is not a "return to form," or "what resurrected the franchise." It was just a decent game from an outsiders perspective, and the first game in a while that didn't have any MAJOR gameplay issues (Werehog, 06 glitches, Shadow the hedgehog games overall weird themes and story path picking). In you look at Colours as a Sonic the Hedgehog game compared to ALL of the games both released before and after, I would give it overall a 6.

Pros of Colours (In 2010, and what still holds up in 2021)
A wide range of level themes
    Brilliant Soundtrack
Good 2D platforming, built for the Wii and its controls
    Visuals

Cons (From 2010, that still apply):
    VERY childish story
VERY Basic 3D sections (Although it worked well on Wii, could have been more interesting)
The fact that wisps continue to live thought the since-released Sonic games

I think that colours was the perfect Sonic game, for the Wii, boosted by the fact that "Sonic wasn't doing too great at the time." (Whether you as a fan agree with this statement is irrelevant, as Sega and Sonic Team are unfortunately not listening to you, they're listening to the reviewers who say this.)

Sonic Colours Ultimate both highlights issues the original game had at the time, shows things that didn't age too well, and introduced new problems. Some of these problems listed above.

    Things that didn't age well:
The level design (Too much 2D for a "3D" Sonic game)
The 3D sections (Short and simple, reminiscent of Sonic Forces' 3D sections)
    Wisps
Character models, mostly during cutscenes (Obvs this was because its a Wii game, but as proven by the internet, these could have easily been redone, but Sega chose not to).
The overall difficulty of the level game.
The amount of filler in the game.

    New problems:
Glitches and bugs (But patches can fix this)
New OST, which most have very mixed feelings about, and isn't optional.
Planet Wisps (and ONLY Planet Wisps) new music being separate DLC??? (Scummy af)
Lighting and visuals, better in some places, same or worse in others.

Back in 2010, I fell that if Sonic Colours had been a multi-platform release on XB360 and PS3, some of these issues would have come to light back then, and not even just ones about lighting and visuals. The game would not have scored as highly.

Sonic Colours is 60% filler content. Unless you're collecting red rings, you will find yourself rarely going back to play anything outside of Act 1 or 2. The level design is simplistic, the cutscenes are made for infants, and overall, I believe Sonic Colours is one of the least fun boost games. If you're looking to play a boost game, play Unleashed or Generations. Yes, you will have to put up with "gimmicks" like the werehog or Classic Sonic, but beating the game and going back to play the boost levels is way more worth putting up that than Sonic Colours' biggest gimmicks; Filler, Wisps, and lack of 3D. Sonic the Hedgehog is a speed platforming game. Sonic Colours is a platforming game that has speed areas. They don't blend these 2 things together very much.

Ultimate has brought to light these issues with the original game, and hasn't rectified a single thing. Most new things added are things people have mixed feelings about. The only things everyone likes is the customisation, and that's technically even optional.

Ultimate also added Tails saves, which are not optional, and this SUCKS. It makes what I would say is a semi-boring game a VERY boring game. But at least you don't have to always start those yellow spring filler levels from the very start if you slip off from boredom.

As a remaster, Ultimate should have set out to fix issues from a Wii game on modern platforms, whilst also staying true to the original themes and "story." But this didn't happen. Here are some things that should have happened, whilst staying true to the original game:

Merging the filler levels and revamping them to feel less filler
Remaking the DS levels as the Act 4's and 5's
Introducing the DS wisps, either for the DS levels or the whole game
Remaking the DS Mother Wisp Vs. Super Sonic as a secret boss after getting all red rings
    Making the new OST optional
Online Rival Rush against friends (Like in Generations on 3DS)
    Playable Metal Sonic (Or Shadow)
    Online Leaderboards

Overall, Ultimate has made people see the many issues colours originally had, and whilst it didn't really "downgrade" the original game, it definitely didn't upgrade it much. And since it's a remastered port it, it should have done a lot more. That's why I would give Sonic Colours on Wii a 6, and Ultimate a 4. Ultimate didn't get as close as to being what it should have been. If you want a good 3D boost game, play Generations If you want a good 3D Sonic game, play Adventure 2 If you want the best Sonic Colours, play the DS version I hope Sega will see the reception of both Ultimate and the Original in these reviews, and steer away from using it as base.

So this is a Sonic game, so it is not very good. Cutscenes are looking horribly compressed on PS5, there are some graphical glitches and many level elements that aren't thought out well or do have very weird controls. It's very easy to tear this game down and give it a low score.

Having said that, I still like this game. It is like a trashy and cheesy B-movie that isn't good but still

Having said that, I still like this game. It is like a trashy and cheesy B-movie that isn't good but still very entertaining in what it does. Levels aren't very long but very diversified and replayable. Especially the 3D levels are presented very well most of the time, the water planet doesn't suck, and bosses are fun to fight and not too easy most of the time.

The graphics are holding up very well for an 11 year old game. And the music score is just fantastic.

I finished this game in ca. 5 hours. So I wouldn't recommend it for 39,99. But if you want to speed run every level and get the platinum trophy (like I am planning to do) it might be actually worth it. Because this game wants and deserves to be replayed multiple times. 7/10.

Don’t get me wrong sonic colors has its moments… some initially cool level design, from the candy land, to underwater levels, a rollercoaster… but then it’s a repetitive borfest for the rest of the levels… doing the same stuff, the same frustrating and slow platforming..
Sonic Colors is at its best when youre going fast, collecting rings, dodging, but it just pumps the breaks far too often with these awful platforming sections.. which brings me to the aliens.. as you progress youll unlock new aliens that can hlp you levitate for example, or go through these diamonds.. but far too often an alien will be locked for you to come back later.. killing all exploration insentive.. why look for secrets, why try and get high scores if some of the level is locked off.. I barely want to play these levels the first time let alone come back later…
Sonic Colors Ultimate may have been a great game back in the day.. but 11 years later it’s a clunky bore…

The controls I find extremely bad and the game is extremely short. I finished it in 2 days and then immediately threw it off my PlayStation.

As a trophy hunter, quickly ran into the problem of needing an S rank for each round and collecting all the red coins. Doesn't sound completely impossible, until the controls work against you again or one of the beloved levels thwarts you again.

In short: Not recommended. Am not a big Sonic fan anyway (never have been) but thought I might find this game interesting but where the glory of the original shone like a clean polished diamond when it first came out the remaster is a piece of junk I cannot recommend to anyone.

¡EQUIVOCADO!

For being a remaster, Colours Ultimate is a weird one but I did manage to have a blast playing it!
The graphics are simply gorgeous. The controls are weird but they're not bad. It's probably just me who got used to the original Wii controls. The only negative thing I encountered are VERY LONG loading screens for levels and menus. Fortunately, they slightly fixed them with some patches

The customizations are very nice! You can change the boost aura, shoes, and gloves and make ur own Sonic! I made mine look like himself in the movie and it's cool!
In conclusion, Sonic Colours Ultimate is... well, it's Sonic Colours! If the base game is still a good game, the remaster is instantly good.
But is it better than the original? No.
    Is it worse? No.
It's AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL.
It did some things right and some not so much.

I would recommend it to every Sonic fan who wants to try Colours but can't afford a Wii.
Nostalgic fans should stick to the original, but the remaster is good enough, IMO.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Due to never owning a Wii I never had the chance to play *Sonic Colours* when it was originally released so when this re-release was announced I was pretty excited. Now, after 20+ hours with the game I can confirm it is certainly one of Sonic's best 3D outings.

The game provides really solid, enjoyable and entertaining *Sonic* platforming action. It feels a lot closer to the classis *Sonic* games in that unlike *Unleashed* or *Forces* the game doesn't depend on you speed booting through the whole thing but rather sections of speed are rewards for doing well. There were no instances of flying off the screen in crazy directions and bottomless pits were at a minimum. Controls felt responsive and lacked the slipperiness of some 3D *Sonic* games.

I had played *Sonic Colours* and *Lost World* on the DS and found that *Lost World* in particular forced you to use Wisp powers to the point where it felt is was just a Wisp-athon rather than actually playing as Sonic. Here I did not feel that was the case at all, and all levels can be completed without even using the Wisps at all. The great thing is that the majority of the Wisp powers are fun to use and don't overstay their welcome.

The game looks absolutely amazing, not just because of the new coat of paint, but also due to the design of the levels themselves and the individual enemies. Egg Pawns wear little costumes to match the theme of a level (seeing them decked out in chefs hats in Sweet Mountain always made me chuckle) and there is heaps going on in the background. It really does make *Sonic Forces* all-the-same white Egg Pawn and somewhat bland levels look even worse. Some levels, such as Starlight Carnival, literally made me stop and just admire at how much was going on. It's brilliant!

As with many games that unlock items/ powers as you play, *Colours* really opens up once the game is completed and you have access to all Wisps throughout all the levels. There are paths you can't get to without using the Wisps and of course various collectables for which Wisp powers are required to collect. After I'd completed the main game I went back through to collect all the Red Rings and this I really enjoyed. I love fast, quick platforming that this kind of thing presents you with and while it's not quite as polished as, say, *Rayman Legends*, it's still a lot of fun.

While the main gameplay you'll be spending 90% of your time doing is good fun, unfortunately the boss fights are a very mixed bag. The chase-based fights, especially the final boss, are fun, but the more traditional 2D boss fights are just boring and rather easy. It's a shame as everything else around them is great.

As for the content the *Ultimate* release adds, it is again something of a mixed bag. The Jade Wisp, which was not in the original game and gives you the Jade Ghost ability, is kind of cool but only really needed for collecting Red Rings and Tails icons. The collectables Park Tokens are only used to unlock customisation items to change Sonic's appearance. These are all purely cosmetic and don't change the gameplay or Sonic's abilities at all, but are fun to play around with if you like that kind of thing.

Speaking of the Tails Icons, the switch from having lives to having Tails save you if you fall off the screen really didn't make much difference. Yes, you don't have to start back at the beginning of a level if you die, but I fail to see that as a bad thing. Kind of funny when you think of all the carry on some fans had when Sega initially wanted to remove 100 Rings = 1up in *Lost World*.

Sadly, having Super Sonic in the game really doesn't add anything. In fact, it makes it *less* fun to play through the levels as you can't use any of the Wisp powers. He feels more like a handicap here. To add to this the Sonic Simulator minigame, which you need to complete to unlock the Chaos Emeralds and thus Super Sonic, are all very dull and boring.

*Sonic Colours: Ultimate* is easily the best 3D *Sonic* release since *Generations*. However, there probably isn't much here to recommend to those who have already played the game and don't feel the need to revisit. But if you *do* want to be able to experience Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park outside of the Wii, or like me you were not able to play *Colours* originally due to it's Nintendo exclusivity, *Sonic Colours: Ultimate* is well worth your time!

This game is ok. You will find tons of glitches, but not often enough to impact the overall gameplay. I understand that corrupted data is a problem for ps4, but just for that console. The new ghost wisps are anti-climatic. But the music can slap, and the customization options are cool but don't play in cutscenes. I won't even get into how much the rival rush is broken. Overall, Sonic Colors Ultimate is half-decent, but there is not enough new stuff to keep us playing, and the glitches are unsightly, and there is a feeling that this game was rushed by SEGA and Blind Squirrel, who have not addressed the glitches or even tried to fix the game.

A disappointing, lazy remaster of a very good platformer. The developers took the path of least resistance by stretching textures and trying to conceal their blurriness with aggressive lighting, which made things worse. The only advantages I see here are the quality of the original game and the fact that the Ultimate edition brought it to new platforms. [12/2021, p.59]

As a remake, Sonic Colors: Ultimate does not pay much attention to many of the details, there is not much difference from the original except for a better graphics. However, based on the excellent quality of the original game, Sonic Colors: Ultimate is still a work that allows players to fully appreciate the charm of the Sonic series.

Overall, Sonic Colors Ultimate is a must-buy for anyone who loved the original release – or who missed it and always wanted to try it out. On the PS4 and PS5, it plays wonderfully and our time netted zero issues either visually or with crashes. Some have reported issues on the Switch version and it seems like it would be best to wait for that one to get fixed-up before buying. However, if you’re playing on PlayStation and Xbox hardware, you’re in great shape to enjoy one of Sonic’s finest adventures ever and his best 3D outing in history.
