Skylanders SuperChargers is the most refined and polished game of the series. It brings new gameplay dynamics and fantastic new toys to play with and without the console switched on.

Skylanders Superchargers is celebrating its fifth anniversary and it does it with great results. Even with LEGO Dimensions and Disney Infinity 3.0 around we must tell you that it easily surpasses them with great gameplay and excellent NFC functions.

So far, Superchargers is the best Skylanders we've ever played. Despite a relatively dull story and a multiplayer mode that needs some refinements, there is a ton of content that will keep you and your children busy for quite a long time, and the addition of the vehicles spices things up. A lot. Fortunately, it's also the first time that you'll be able to fully appreciate the game without having to double mortgage your house.

Superchargers is the moment we really see Skylanders deliver on its potential. It’s not the cheapest game to play with your family but it delivers a huge amount of value.

This year's addendum to Skylanders' franchise is convincing: vehicles were introduced and could widen the gameplay with no overturn on the mechanics that made the game shine in the past years. Skylanders SuperChargers is still the usual, enjoyable action-platform... with a roaring twist.

Skylanders SuperChargers is hands-down one of the best kid-friendly games on the market, and the most complete realization of the “toys to life” genre to date.

Skylanders: SuperChargers is a bit cheaper, and that is noticeable in the slightly boring and matte design of the Skylanders, which thankfully does no longer matter as soon as you step into your car to have a fun online race.

Skylanders: Superchargers offers more than just the addition of cars. The game has great changes in gameplay and as always the story flows through the game perfectly. The Skylanders figures seem a bit darker and less nice than they used to, but in-game they have a lot of new attacks to enjoy.

Skylanders SuperChargers seems to have fully understood the problems of Skylanders Trap Team. Everything is not fine yet, but the changes in terms of rhythm, difficulty, graphics make this game better than the previous one. And the vehicles offer players something new to taste.

Even though some might be groaning at the cost of having to buy all new toys with it (relax, older ones work just fine as well), Skylanders SuperChargers still qualifies as one of the better games in the series to date. It's fun to play whether in a vehicle or running around, and it looks and sounds very nice for the most part. If your wallet is prepared, you'll have no problem reaching top speed with this one.
  19. Skylanders SuperChargers has great toys and loads of fun stuff to do. Better still, it isn’t (necessarily) going to break the bank.

Skylanders SuperChargers is a lot of fun. It’s a simple yet magnificent looking game that displays effort in its production, despite its annual release cycle. The only complaints gravitate around the unimaginative use of the portal of power, some uncomfortable camera angles and the unavoidable feeling of playing an incomplete product unless you invest in further items.

The Superchargers aesthetic fits in perfectly to the continuing Skylanders franchise. Not much has been updated in the way of gameplay, other than the addition of the Superchargers, but if it ain’t broke...

Regular adventuring is fun, but the second a player has to hop into a vehicle, it's a gamble as how good or bad the experience will be. If the vehicular elements were separate from the story and entirely optional, this would be the best entry in the series. But they're not and bring the rest of the game down.

I appreciate that developer Vicarious Visions has tried to steer Skylanders in a new direction, and there’s certainly plenty to do here. But I’m not sure the future of Skylanders lies in mediocre kart racing, and unfortunately, there’s just too much of that in Skylanders SuperChargers. Hopefully the next entry will get the series back on track.

My least favorite Skylanders game so far. No arena modes which had become my favorite part of the series after the previous two games. ControlMy least favorite Skylanders game so far. No arena modes which had become my favorite part of the series after the previous two games. Control scheme changed to not use shoulder buttons anymore when several old characters have button combos that require their use. Traps from the last game do next to nothing (while Traps were a much better gimmick than vehicles). Magic items do next to nothing as well. Gimmick land vehicle zones make up large parts of every story level and are un-skippable (unlike Swap Zones which were nearly as boring / bad, but were skippable). The vehicle zones and racing are silly and too different from the solid, core gameplay of the series. Several of my favorite characters from the last game play different and feel wrong (this has become the norm between games in Skylanders - inconsistency in older characters' gameplay). Online is cool but minimal. Online PvP and co-op arenas would have been great, but as I said, not even single player or local co-op arenas in this game. Kaos Doom Challenge is gone. But hey, the graphics, UI, voice-acting are all top notch. First Skylanders game I regret buying. I'm going to pretend I didn't buy it and wait to see what the next one is like. I hope the next one is better. Full Review »

There were almost no new characters anymore and almost only old characters were taken and their moveset was changed. However, the gameplay in this game was very good and the idea with the vehicles was well implemented. Also, Skylanders Superchargers is not a rip-off like other Skylanders games, because you don't need all the vehicle elements and you don't even need all the vehicle types, and the necessary ones are already in the starter pack. Back in 2015, when "Skylanders" games were released on an annual basis, we wondered where the franchise could go after "Trap Team" introducedBack in 2015, when "Skylanders" games were released on an annual basis, we wondered where the franchise could go after "Trap Team" introduced the concept of trapping villains and playing as them. So what new, groundbreaking concept would they come up with for the next game? Vehicles. Yes. That's the best concept they could come up with at the time. Fortunately, however, the game featuring said vehicles actually turned out quite fun!
"Skylanders: Superchargers" once again includes a number of the same aspects we've come to expect out of the series: colorful visuals, fun platforming, and a fun, childlike charm. There's also a number of things going on here that make it feel like more than just another "Skylanders" adventure: for starters, the vehicle sections, while not the most groundbreaking thing that could've been added to a new "Skylanders" game, are quite fun and unique, and they do added a nice extra layer to the gameplay to keep it from feeling too cut-and-dry compared to the previous installments of the series. On top of that, while the story in the "Skylanders" series has never been award-worthy, I can appreciate that the stakes have been raised this time around, making things feel a bit more exciting overall.
There are a few problems that, while not game-breaking, do dock a few points. Notably, while the vehicle segments are pretty fun overall, it doesn't feel like the concept was really fleshed out all that well; by that I mean, the game introduces a number of different types of vehicles that you can use, such as land, air and sea, but you only need the land (car) vehicle to beat the game. I imagine this was probably done so as to not drain wallets as much on air and sea vehicles, and so that players that only bought the starter pack wouldn't be locked out of the story, but it's still disappointing that the land vehicle is the one that gets a lot of the attention. On top of that, the controls for the vehicles aren't always the greatest. Not terrible, but they definitely take some getting used to.
Still, there's plenty of fun to be had with "Skylanders Superchargers," and with this new entry, Activision proves that there's still some life left in this franchise. It's a charming title that's plenty of fun for the kids and entertaining enough for the older crowd.
Final rating: 8 out of 10 "Great"
