After looking for an MMORPG to pull me away from Neverwinter, I read up reviews on this and thought I would give it a try. I have to say I came away a bit......very disappointed with this game. After reading and reviewing the hype, I expected more.

So to start, the game is very pretty. Not AAA quality pretty, but for a f2p, pretty enough to warrant your eyes. Especially the cutscenses and the areas. I also LOVED the customization I was allowed with this game. Despite being linked to a certain class, I really had the chance to distinguish myself from the cookie cutter looks of other players and I had a lot of fun with that. I could go classic, casual, sci-fi, and everything in between. However, the biggest draw of the game is without a doubt, the action system. Rather than simply have you hold down a button and select a spell like in most MMOs, Skyforge allows you to link together different attacks and combos for various damage depending on the type of encounter you come to regarding enemies. It is without a doubt different and quite fun.

But soon after things start to go south.

-So let me start by saying the game's quests are linear. And I mean LINEAR. You go from point A to point B with little to no variation in between. The "quests" are about as cut and dry as your average first person shooter mission. How is it that any RPG has linearity let alone this much?

-The game also reminds you real quick that it is a f2p by only allowing you access to 3 classes out of a 13!!!! classes to start. Now granted, it does give you the ingenious move of allowing you to switch between all the classes if you so please (which is honestly pretty awesome), but you have to grind (and I mean grind) for an access to just 1 of the other ones that doesn't come with the download.

-Speaking of the grinding and linearity, they don't really go well together. This game has various ways to acquire things, but it doesn't do a good job of explaining things. It goes out of its way to explain the action in the game, but does little to explain anything else. Hand holding isn't necessary, but what makes an MMORPG what it is is the vast amount of content. There needs to be some sort of explanation of how to do what and what things do.

-Continuing along the lines of explaining things, this game lacks a text chat. While that may not seem like a huge deal....it is in this case. When you have a game that doesn't do a great job explaining things, option B is to look towards the community for answers. Skyforge really hinders itself in omission of a text chat because it makes the game appear very anti-social when there are probably many questions to be answered about it. Unless you are grouping up with people you already know, it makes it very hard to try randomly create a bond with anyone.

-Finally, while the action is awesome and the combat system is fun, it can get repetitive quick. You have various combos, but you encounter the same type of enemies and enemy groups where it really limits the type of combat you can do because you have to attack them all the same way. Not to mention the bullet-sponge bosses that require you to constantly hack and slash with little variation in the strategy.

I was really hoping for a lot more from Skyforge because the visuals alone drew me in and the action was fun in the beginning, but all the style wore off quick and showed very little substance. If you are looking for an f2p MMORPG, I'd recommend Neverwinter, waiting for TERA, or spending $8 on ESO on Groupon.

I have pushed through and experienced the standard story, the season story, and the group/raids as well as a smattering of dailies and here are my thoughts.

Keep in mind that this is free to play so the expectations on graphics and content should be fairly low versus monthly subscription games that should be amazing.

Graphics: Pretty great considering it is free. So many worlds and styles is amazing what you get for the price. The downside is the voicing and the text boxes. Pretty bad in its current state. I'll go with 8/10.
Story: Again amazing how much content you get for free and there isn't a wall in advancement of characters which I would have expected. 9/10
Gameplay: This is where things get funky. The controls are easy to get used to but man oh man that navigation menu is so confusing. Train me 100 times and I still don't know where half of the stuff is and there is absolutely no sense of what is supposed to happen next. I have no idea what fits my level and what doesn't. I'm being recommended to go places way below my level but there is no difficulty assigned to late game groups or raids so it's a crap shoot if you don't know about it already. What a mess. 4/10

    General:
Though people complain about a pay wall I think that is silly. You aren't paying anything so to get another character class about every 1-2 weeks of play isn't bad at all. I think they put the game out with a 10 dollar booster early on purpose because it gave you just enough premium and ranking that makes the grind okay. If you come in late and that isn't there, just buy about 10-20 dollars in currency and you are probably in the same spot.

I had hoped that this is the MMORPG for people who aren't bringing 5+ friends with them but alas it's not. After the story and the season it's the same old join a pug or a guild that doesn't suck which to me ends up killing any MMORPG, even one that is free.
    Overall 7/10

First this game is a visual masterpiece, I find myself frequently just walking around and admiring the environment! The music and sound is also great. I also don't find this game as grindy as other mmorpg, I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it's because it's not difficult to get gear, or that same stats are used for every class, where if you level one, you level them all. Or maybe it's because gear is not everything to get ahead here, as you build up your stats from knowledge accumulated, number of followers and prestige.

The combat is great and face-paced with a lot of variety between the different classes available. There are lots of instances available that can be played solo, in groups of 3, in a holy trinity of 5, or in group of 10. The PVP is very enjoyable, even though it's not my thing. All up to the player to choose his preferred play-style; this game has something for everyone.

When you become a Junior God in the game, you have a huge choice of things to do that it can be a bit overwhelming. You get invasions, directives, equipment quests, operations and this is in addition to the campaign missions and adventures. Personally I love the choice. I just wish it was a little clearer on the best path to build up your character, but then again, maybe this is done on purpose for the player to explore all the options.

I do have some complaints, but they are very minor. There are some bugs in the game, but considering I was playing a beta version, I found it to be very stable. I also find there's some slow down in the game, especially in the heavy action scenes, but this is not a deal-breaker. I'm not sure if it's lag or the graphics. Currently trying to tweak this by disabling some of the advanced video settings. Even though the game is free to play, expect that it will take you four times longer than if you had a premium subscription. You may also need to buy the class you want to get because at start you will only get a choice of 3 (but the first 3 are the best so far in my opinion).

if you like mmorpgs, i recommend you give this one a try.

I really wanted to like Skyforge. It was a cool idea, and I loved the notion of getting to play any class with my one character. That subtly shifts the paradigm of gameplay from "omg wasting my time on this one, I want to try that one".
Unfortunately, 14 of 17 classes require by my math, 2-3 weeks solid play before you get to open one. It's not a progression the way they promise, it's just raw money, whether it's in-game or RL--though obviously spending dollars speeds you along, that's where you encounter the next problem.
After 12 hours, I'm bored already. I opened up all of the tree of each of my 3 classes, and not without a lot of frustration. There are numerous bugs, and the "tutorial" is ridiculously pointless, but worst of all is how unintuitive the whole thing is. Why is my map screen the only way to see what I need to do? And if it is, why did you bury it in the middle of my menu? (And then there's that bug that won't let me back out of it again....)
I like giving money to games I enjoy. But the entire time I played this, I sat on the fence of "is it worth it". The most compelling thing for me is levelling up and discovering neat new combinations in classes and abilities, and you don't get that here at all. Each class has a pretty straight line of abilities that doesn't allow for any customization. You'll find your combos, you'll use them, and la! you're done.
But hey, it's free to play. If you want to put your time into it, it's pretty enough. I haven't played with others yet, so maybe that's a huge element of the game that I'm missing. If it is, I'll come back and edit my review to include the amazing shift that happens at that point.

Edited 5-3-17: I spent about 30 hours total on the game. Dropped the score from 5 to 1. Don't do it. It's an unforgivably boring ride. You have no access to any of their vaunted classes, "how to play" is an absolute joke, and the game is a mockery of an MMO. Why? You do everything yourself. THe few times I joined up with groups to do an instance, it was this insane race to get it done with no communication between players, and absolutely no need for any playstyle other than damage. I deleted this hideous game from my PS4 and have felt better for it.

Skyforge is the lovechild of games like Warframe and Neverwinter. It's an MMO but has heavy emphasis on instances. Thirdly, and this is what made me uninstall the game, the gameplay is just not that fun. The enemies are bland and you use the same button mashing combination whether it's a grunt or a boss. You're given 3-4 skills to start with, gaining more as you go along, but there is no apparent reason to use one over the other.

In retrospect, the story wasn't much to cheer for either. Nothing that I can remember, in fact. And even though it's labeled as a free game, it's really a pay-as-you-go game. And it's up to you just how much you're willing to pay. For a free game, this would get a 6-7. But as it's not, it gets a 4-5.

They have changed there class gaining models 4 times and now they made it even worse than what it was in the past. Like there is so many great things about this game that is flawed by lazy developers that just want your money. Either spend 12-15$ a class or spend a week to a month grinding to get 1 of the 13 classes DISGUSTING.

I tell you what I did I spent 13$ on a game called Elder Scrolls Online:Gold used even though its not the best game it beats the **** outta this. Even though you grind in ESO for gear it's not as mind numbing boring as Skyforge and at least that has a class system where your not gonna be blind sided by hours of grinding just to realize your short and have to farm more for 10+ hours.

Also don't even let me get into an event they had where they charged people loads of money for an in game P2W item from an event that increased dmg by 44 **** percent then as the community got together about how broken that is they waited till the end of the event to drop the item down to 2.2% just so they can get as much money as they can.

I played this game for about 40 hours maxed out the first 3 classes and beat the campaign 10/10 would not ever do it again and will NEVER suggest a friend to play this crud even with it being free there class presentation sales leave that most disgusting taste in my mouth.

Heres the quick run down on the game itself. Overused enemy models about every fight is the same bosses seem to be a massive let down as most of them are just sponges with a factor of dodging there aoe to avoid being 1 shot. The pvp oh wait there is no PvP because nobody does it and when they are its just a spam fest. The story is very liner and you can guess whats gonna happen every quest is the same. The game builds up so much to there awesome combat system you can't even try out all the classes unless you spend money or play this game for a full year or 2 straight and even then idk.

If your on PSN go play Neverwinter the graphics may not be amazing but least you can get your moneys worth if you decided to drop 10$ or not.
