This game is a 7 but gets an extra point for the price/length ratio, $30/30 hours, impressive. Okay so there's a weird curve in the game play, maybe 7-8 hours in is where it actually starts to get good, which is bizarre. Word of advice, don't give up on this game, it's worth it, do the stupid crypt quest, get past king Meos, and get into the open green area, that is when I truly startedThis game is a 7 but gets an extra point for the price/length ratio, $30/30 hours, impressive. Word of advice, don't give up on this game, it's worth it, do the stupid crypt quest, get past king Meos, and get into the open green area, that is when I truly started enjoying the game, and I almost quit entirely before I got there. The combat gets HARD for a while until you get used to it. Also don't be a hero you need health items, a lot, at all times, or you'll be grinding/dying/losing progress. Pretty neat art style too. This game is amazing! I've been playing it for a few hours, and I really like the story, the gameplay, the artistic style and the soundtrack. For the company's first game, it's very strong.

Ratchet & Clank meets Tekken meets Dragon Quest, with the bending from Avatar: The Last Air Bender. I got this on sale for like $9 looking for a distraction while waiting for DQ11 and it has far exceeded that. The story is good, the combat is clunky yet fun, the world is a cell shaded wonderland, and the characters are actually interesting. The only gripe I have is a low frame-rate in the second third of the game during a semi open-world segment. Solid 8/10, glad I got it at such a good price. It's still on sale at the time of writing this review, although after playing it, I'd say that it's still easily worth it at the full $29.99 USD ($39.99 CAD) price tag. Expand

If you love RPGs with personality, originality and heart, PLEASE, don't skip this one. It does suffer from lack of polish and some smaller bugs and glitches, but the good things are so good that you'll barely notice. Great combat system, great cast of characters, very good music and tracks, great art style, and surprisingly good plot and length, this is a gem.

The result is a charmingly clunky yarn that doesn’t wow, but has more to offer than clichés alone. [July 2017, p73]

Overall, Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom isn't that bad. The story is good enough, if a tad generic, while the characters are likeable if you can get past their odd dialogue and exaggerated reactions. Outside of a pretty finicky magic and parry system, the combat is done well for those who crave real-time action over menus, and some of the other systems bring some depth to that. Presentation is decent, but the camera can be enough to put off some people. If you're craving a game that sticks to some JRPG standards, Shiness isn't a bad one to check out once you're done with the heavy-hitters on the system.

A fantastic effort that mostly delivers on the promises made during its funding campaign. [June 2017, p.71]
