After a long wait of almost 20 years we finally have our hands on the sequel we’ve always wanted, and the sequel we deserve. For those of you jumping into Shenmue for the first time, welcome, but be aware this game was intended for those of us who have waited 18+ years. We have a strong bond between this game and are finally able to have our connection grow here today. Let me start off with how great it looks. Now compared to modern day game obviously Shenmue can’t compare. But for those of us who have waited in the Shenmue “Purgatory” this is exactly how we would’ve wanted our game to look and age. Everything feels smoother from combat to graphics and frame rates (PS4 Pro). It’s awesome to hear the familiar voice of Ryo Hazuki and Friends again, as well as meeting new friends and enmities along the way. So once again Shenmue friends! It’s here! Let’s celebrate! Here’s to Shenmue 3 and hopefully Shenmue 4 and more! Sincerely,
    Shenmue Fan

    A wonderful game.
Has loads of what's missing in the industry right now. Authenticity.
People should play this. Because past some technical imperfections due to budgetary issues, this game has more to offer than many AAA games with massive budget.

Amazing. YS and his team has captured the essence of Shenmue from all those years ago and brought it to the present day. To say this was made on a limited budget with limited development tools adds to how much of an amazing achievement and package this is.

Full disclosure: I'm a longtime Shenmue fan and someone who backed Shenmue 3.
Review: Shenmue 3 is what Shenmue fans want - mostly. The game feels like the sequel we were robbed of back in the Dreamcast era. The charmingly awkward dialogue is back, and this time I feel like it's a choice rather than a product of it's era, simply to please the fans who've come to love it so much.

The charmingly awkward dialogue is back, and this time I feel like it's a choice rather than a product of it's era, simply to please the fans who've come to love it so much.

In terms of pacing, Shenmue 3 picks up a lot faster than the previous two games in the series. You're immediately thrown into a "small open world" area and introduced to a variety of mini games and combat. In earlier entries, Shenmue took it's time to build to your first encounter, or let you discover the mini games after the initial "prologue" of the game, but not here. In fact, Shenmue 3 doesn't have a prologue, as it picks up immediately where Shenmue 2 left of, as if the last 18 years never happend.
As a Shenmue fan, i like this.

However, the reason I'm giving this an 8 (which is still very high by my standards) and not a 10 is because of 2 things. One of them bugs me as a Shenmue fan, the other just bugs me in general.

    1) The combat: Shenmue 1 & 2 had some great combat. It came down to throws, punches, kicks and dodges. Timing moves right and landing a hard-to-pull-of throw resulted in beautiful animations that made you feel like a martial arts master. The combat felt real, heavy but not sluggish, and rewarding. Shenmue 3, however, ditches the throws entirely and opts for a faster-paced, combo centric fighting system that is a lot more "button mashy." It's... okay. It can be fun. But it doesn't feel as rewarding, and the lack of throw moves altogether (maybe due to budget limitations in the animation department) definitely hurts my experience as a longtime fan.

    2) The main menu: There is no excuse for this game to have a Jpeg for a menu screen. It's a huge diservice to the game. It's the first thing people are going to see, and it's going to make them think they've bought into a cheap experience. Now, i know Shenmue 3 was made on a budget - i helped add to that budget - but an animated, asethetically pleasing menu wouldn't break the bank now, would it?

Overall, the game is what i wanted, minus 1 or 2 things. It adds new mechanics, which are fine, and gives longtime fans what they want. Although, i really can't say if this game will sit well with anyone who hasn't played the series before. I'm far too invested to pretend to have an objective opinion at this point.

The environments are breathtaking. I'm playing on a PS4 Pro and I find myself stopping many times just to awe at the landscape in Bailu and currently in the bustling city of Niaowu. The environments are alive unlike any other game...well other than Shenmue 1 and 2. Yu's attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of these sprawling environments. The only downside so far and it isn't Yu's fault is due to China's gambling laws they had to change the gambling system and it's a bit too much effort to make money that way. One task has you needing to make 2000 yuan and if you were to gamble it would take forever. Much easier to fish, chop wood, or even find herbs to make medicines to sell. If they left it original, the game wouldn't be able to be released in China. big market I guess. Expand

Considering this is initially a crowdfunded project (other parties financially contributed also) I think this has turned out much better than expected. The voice acting and audio direction is far superior to previous entries, the controls have been greatly improved and the use of the unreal engine has bought the games visuals up to the current generation. There are a small few critiques; some of the dialogue threads seem a little disjointed at times and the removal of throw moves from Ryo’s moves was a disappointment. However this is a faithful continuation of the series which I think anyone even with the slightest interest in role playing/action adventure games based in the East in the 1980’s should definitely consider playing. All in all from what I've seen so far, it's excellent and not at all the dud I was actually expecting. Negatives - The voice acting is still atrocious, especially Ryo, but then it's part and parcel of Shenmue I guess. I'd rather they stuck with the awful original Ryo actor, then get someone like Keifer Sutherland along, sometimes a poor yet recognisable thing is better than something better but jarring. I HATE the eating mechanic, nobody on earth Ryo's size eats as much as he seemingly needs - going from barely ever eating (or needing the toilet) in the previous games, it's completely off putting the guy is suddenly a ravenous pig. That's the only real reason I've given it a 9, the eating mechanic really is that much of a negative, as well as slowing the game down with unnecessary munching, it's also expensive. It's the one new addition I'd gladly see them remove in a patch, I've no idea what Yu was thinking adding it in other than to pad the came length. Ryo should be as big as Fatty from Shenmue 2 the amount he shovels down in this game. I guess Suzuki plays Yakuza a lot, but even in that you don't need to eat constantly, only ever really needing to when low on health or to progress story/friendship elements. So far so good, loving it. Apart from the new gluttonous Ryo and the weird waxy faces of a lot of the characters (they kinda remind me of One Piece characters) Expand

Utter Shenmue goodness in one game.

Shenmue III is one of a kind and you'll either like it or hate it. If you're a fan of the first two games, there's absolutely no doubt that you'll love the 3rd game. Everything is there to make you happy : story continuation, QTE, fantastic OST, epic moments, mini games and even new features like fishing, training your kung fu etc.

Game has a good replay value since you can play in 4

Game has a good replay value since you can play in 4 different difficulties : easy, normal, hard, extreme.

I'm not going to talk about the story as it's one of the main element of Shenmue and something you should enjoy while playing, but you'll love it.

Is Shenmue III comparable to the recent AAA games technology wise ? Probably not. No game is perfect and Shenmue is one of them. However, Shenmue III is a perfect Shenmue game.

And even if you haven't played the first two games and want to give it a shot, you still have the possibility to watch a complete story recap of Shenmue I & II directly from the main menu (but I still suggest to play the games, it's a way better experience).

Huge thanks to Yu Suzuki, the development team, all the fans out there and to all the newcomers who'll give it a try.

It's an ok game, good story and some characters but there are some rough edges. Graphics are from last gen, there are notable frame drops in base Ps4 at least which is unaceptable since this game should not be that heavy resource demandant, movement is clunky as usual.

I'd not recommend at full price, wait for a deep sale.

A worthy continuation of the Saga, which we loved so much.

If you want to see the continuation of the story of Ryo Hazuki and play Shenmue 4, please support the game and buy a licensed copy in the Ps Store, or Epic Games Store.

Do I think it's a 10 really? No. I'm having to balance out the score. I'll tell you in unbiased terms that the game is good, is it perfect? No. This is a time when you should read rather than look at a score. I'm keeping it spoiler free also so don't expect anything in too much detail.

The game runs fine on PS4, the claim it does not is a lie. Does not run perfectly, does have minor

The game runs fine on PS4, the claim it does not is a lie. Does not run perfectly, does have minor hiccups but I've seen worse hiccups in games like GTA V, Uncharted 4 and such.

As for the gameplay, It's an improvement in terms of character movement from the previous entries.

Introduction of a new system where you must eat is problematic and slows the game down far too often, this could do with tweaking as Ryo seems to need to eat more than any normal human who weighs his amount. It's seriously annoying to need to spend money when progressing in the story also requires money. This is something that should maybe tie into game difficulty level rather than being the normal occurance for all difficulties. Patch it in, would make the game better.

Music is spot on and absolutely flawlessly created, some of it is from the older games which is fine and actually pulls on nostalgia strings so it was probably a smart choice.

Graphics are a mixed bag, character models for the most part look a bit odd, Ryo and Shenhua both look fine though, Where it shines is it's environment detail which is certainly colorful and vibrant, is the environment more beautiful than Death Stranding? That depends if you prefer a world that is aiming for ultra graphical realism or a world that is colorful and beautiful.

Fighting mechanics while on video look clunky and horrid actually do not play anywhere near as bad as they look. it's actually quite fun and enjoyable.

Story is great, acting is Shenmue, that's what we wanted though.

It's more of a 9 rather than a 10 just for the eating mechanics and that creating monetary issues. Sorry I just had to rebalance the score I hate dishonest people and I hate that I have to be slightly dishonest in a score to cancel those people out.

Lets all be 100% honest the graphics are not AAA standard however the focus is on the story and gameplay and it delivers! The dialogue is stiff and rigid but also really fun and Yu Suzuki aims to portray the patience required for martial arts in the story telling here. What a horrible experience this was. Whatever minuscule redeeming qualities this game might have are drowned out by just how infuriating it is. And I can’t think of anybody who is a fan of this franchise that can honestly call this game good with a straight face. Get this game if you’re a fan of the series, but don’t be surprised if it just ends up making you hate yourself for waiting nearly two decades for what is essentially the video game equivalent of Freddy Got Fingered.

Shenmue 3 is a tough recommendation for general audiences. It won't please the die-hard fans of the originals due the step backwards in terms of game design. Neophytes who are curious about it will be confused and bored by the sleep-inducing pace, plus the how the voice acting has not changed since the early '00s. The visuals may have improved, and the loading times are a thing of the past, but this is still has the soul of a Dreamcast title. It won't live up to the expectations that fans have, nor will it excite interest in the franchise. Nothing of substance gets solved by the conclusion, and there's a lack of a pay-off to playing such an intentionally slow experience. The highs in Shenmue 3 involve doing what amounts to nothing; that is just taking in the atmosphere and exploring.
