First, no, I’m not a bot. Yes, I created an account specifically for reviewing this game. Why? Because I have been waiting for it for almost two decades, I backed it on KS and I feel that this game, and Yu Suzuki still need my support. And yes of course I have played the game, game that I could not be happier with!! It has literally everything I was hoping for, and some more. Atmosphere,First, no, I’m not a bot. And yes of course I have played the game, game that I could not be happier with!! It has literally everything I was hoping for, and some more. Atmosphere, slower pace, music, story, even the fighting system is good once you get used to it. It’s Shenmue at its best! NO OTHER game allows you to experience what this game does. NONE, period. Yes the dialogue cutscenes could have been better handled, but honestly, after an hour or so, it is not noticeable anymore. And this is certainly not bothering enough to affect my rating, hence the 10/10. When I read that “it looks like a PS2 game”, it’s just plain ridiculous, game is gorgeous. Sure, if what you are after is an action packed game, with big quest markers in the middle of the screen, where you can kill hundreds of NPC’s… then this one is not for you. But if you want to experience something unique, charming, poetic, that has this 80’s feel, that is martial arts focused, where you take your time… Just get it and you’ll be in for a treat! Expand

A fantastic piece of video game history finds a worthy sequel. You'll be surprised how alive the world is. For example, each progress allows new dialog options with the NPCs which does so much for the immersion. This game isn't for everyone but if you commit yourself to it, Shenmue 3 offers a unique gaming experience.

Honestly a middle of the road mediocre game series but the repetitive and unintuitive gameplay bumps my rating of the game down a notch which doesnt help that the game is mostly cashing in on nostalgia alone.
Also the faces are an absolute train wreck.
The game is so niche its hard to recommend a good substitute but i think id still keep my money in my pocket for doom or cyberpunk instead

Won’t be for everyone as this game needs to be played slowly as you can leave your own life at home and jump into a 1980’s Chinese movie. Mastering Kung fu, catching chickens, finding thugs (not sailors), pail toss, forklifts, chopping wood the list goes on with so much to experience but with the main aim to find Lan Di and avenge your fathers death. Hopefully SEGA get back on board to finish the story for Shenmue 4. Expand

Everything i wanted it to be, and thankfully none of the stuff that had me worried, in fact i'am blown away by shenmue again that Yu managed to create a game like this as a kickstarter! there are a few minor technical issues but nothing that has affected my enjoyment, this game will get a lot of hate but its meant for the fans! let the others carry on playing the same old stuff they have been for years now and their ubisoft effect games with their graphically amazing open worlds that are very boring and completely empty! the one question I'm left with is 'where do i sign up for 4's kickstarter? Great game! Shenmue 3 feels truly like the sequel we have waited for. Yes it had it's faults but this game feels very much Shenmue. The story was interesting and at times emotional too! Funny moments and good new characters to add as well.

The slow pacing won't be for everyone, this game was made for Shenmue fans and the story and some characters at times seemed light which is a shame as it would have been a better game otherwise. Battle system felt alittle clunky at times too. Eating food all the time got annoying, etc. Too much reused music in some scenes I must add.

Overall this game really was just a continuation of the story that is only 40% done and what a good sequel it was to add to the series. A great game with awesome fight scenes that I very much enjoyed playing. I love games that feel like an adventure that make you just wanna play them till the end and Shenmue 3 did that. Seriously well done to Yu and his team for making it feel like Shenmue on a budget and after SO long after the originals. The game's moments reminded me of Shenmue 1 and 2 so that made it feel like 'Shenmue III'.

8.5/10 and I can't wait to play it again with DLC, etc. Please make Shenmue IV Yu Suzuki despite the mixed reception.

    2. The world the game created is is full of details. If you are a patient player which accept a leisure style of playing, you might encounter many surprises during the exploration of the world. If you are an old gamer from the 1990s, you might even find yourself addicted to some of the mini-games in the world.....
    3. Shenmue 3 is also a journey of improving one's body and soul, recommended for those players that are interested in KongFu or Asian culture.

    Cons:
    1. The graphics of the game feels like in late-PS3 standard, which might prevent some players of the new console generation to pick it up.
    2. The story of Shenmue 3 doesn't progress much. Since Suzuki has mentioned before that the Shenmue story has 11 chapters, I guess it would take at least two more games to finish the story while Suzuki is already 61.....

To sum up, as a player, one definitely have the right to criticize Shenmue 3's outdated graphics and lack of some modern open-world game features(like in Assassin Creed, GTA V, etc), but do remember that this is NOT a AAA game and the funding for Shenmue 3 is limited. So here I rated the game from a kickstarter game perspective, and I think in this perspective, Shenmue 3 does live up to the expectations of most of the series fans by providing a genuine Shenmue experience.

PS: Suppose one is asked to rate the three games which come out recently: Death Stranding(abbreviated as "DS"), Pokemon Sword and Shield(as "PokeSS) and Shenmue 3(as "Sh3").

A hard core gamer might rate them as follows:
    DS: 9/10,
    PokeSS: 7/10,
    Sh3: 8/10.

A serious game media might rate them as follows:
    DS: 6/10,
    PokeSS: 4/10,
    Sh3: 5/10.

A "generous" game media might rate them as follows:
    DS: 9/10,
    PokeSS: 10/10,
    Sh3: 9/10.

I believe for a normal person or game media, the rating standard for games should be consistent. Guess how IGN's ratings for the three games are? It turns out to be as follows:
    DS: 6.8/10
    PokeSS: 9.3/10
    Sh3: 5.9/10

It's so inconsistent and almost felt like it was rated by a lunatic to me. How shameful!

Only someone as brilliant as Yu Suzuki could make miracles like Shenmue III happen and a shout-out to Ys Net as a whole for all their hard work. You lads are the true MVPs! Having waited 20 years for this sequel, I’m so happy they haven’t radically changed the formula!
Some people seem to hate this game, perhaps as they’re used to modern games holding their hands.

People who love Shenmue (that’s me) will love this. It won’t change the mind if people that don’t. The fact it even exists still baffles. It’s like it’s been locked in a cupboard for 18 years then given a HD upgrade. And for that reason it rocks.

Huge fan of the original two games, played them both on release. The third instalment almost 20 years later feels like a step backwards. Interacting with NPCs is awful, as is the dialect, the whole food system is poor (feels like there is going to be a Shenmue store coming soon where you buy food with real money).

Shenmue III is not as good as the first two, but that is a high bar to reach, and is its only objective flaw. A lot of "critics" may claim that it is archaic and outdated, but it is not. The game is designed in such a way as to appeal to fans of the series, not to bring in new ones, which is fine. Nobody who likes the original games will have such gripes about Shenmue 3. Nobody who likes the original games will have such gripes about Shenmue 3. Personally, my only subjective complaint is the graphics. Shenmue pushed graphics far but Shenmue 3 looks like it could run on an Xbox 360. That is the downside of barely scraping up the funds to even make the game, I suppose, so the scale of the production is totally un-Shenmue in that sense, though it is understandable.

Ignore the bad and even the middling reviews--if you are a fan of the series with a reasonable set of expectations, you won't be disappointed. IGN reviewed Pokemon Sword & Shield, praising them for evolving despite being the worse in the series, but then rips into Shenmue III. It really shows you how out of touch critics are from real gamers.

Shenmue is not a game series for everyone. It requires patience and is best played as a sort of relaxing, comfy game. Though I do think that people should try the Shenmue 1 and 2 HD collection first to see if they'd like this sort of game and it is a cheaper option.

Some people say it feels dated, but that word has negative connotations and in this case, I would argue that it uniquely feels dated in a good way. It's like being transported back to early 2000s gaming, but with a modern twist and that's really fun, not bad. For example, the movement controls aren't great, but they don't hinder the experience much at all and the VO whilst not good, is charming, even for someone like me who doesn't have nostalgia for the originals (I first played them around 10 years after they released).

The game is not without its faults, i.e. sometimes not being able to skip dialogue, the stamina system, whilst adding a layer of challenge is also unrealistic when eating something like garlic heals you (for a game series which is notorious for being mostly realistic).

But the world is as atmospheric as the originals, you feel like you live there. That's the best thing about Shenmue. The NPCs are all alive, they have their own names, stories, daily routines, jobs etc. There are plenty of ways to advance the story and the different people you talk to tell you different things depending on who they are and what they know. There are a wealth of mini games, which are mostly fun, but also serve as an important means of making money. The music, like the other Shenmue games, is some of the best orchestral video game music I have ever heard and is beautiful.

Overall, this game is as divisive as Shenmue has always been, but my view is that if you are into these type of slow, relaxing games, then it's definitely worth a shot. If you are not, then just don't bother and save your money for something else. If you are unsure, as mentioned above, try Shenmue 1 and 2 HD, taking a laid back approach to it, and see if you like it before buying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

From the moment you boot up the game on PS4 it feels like you are thrown back in time in PS2 & XBOX era. The menu and even the title sequence style of the game is the resemblance of a beautiful time that we all been through and may have forgotten.
At its core, Shenmue 3 feels like its remake of a game that should have existed 15 years ago but that does not mean the game is disappointing.

At its core, Shenmue 3 feels like its remake of a game that should have existed 15 years ago but that does not mean the game is disappointing. we never really expected shenmue 3 to carry the same cutting edge and revolutionary technology that it had back then. Instead with its relatively small budget , it tries to be more of sequel that is freezed in time and that is not a bad thing.
Shenmue 3 doesnt have Mesmerising graphics, but the world is immersive enough if you want it to be. There are details in every corner of the game and you can view all the details from close. The world is colorful and pretty. From the green and lovely village to more populated river side area the world comes to life with its rich details in every corner. Top notch sound design and music also helps to breath life and artistic sense into the world.
When it comes to gameplay, Shenmue doesnt really evolve the formula of the series. Its a game that is between Persona & Yakuza and yet neither of them. You got your romance, socialisation, daily life, adventures and occasionally kung fu fights. The game is filled with tons of dialogues, however I wish these dialogues were written much better. Some of the dialogues are boring and too cheesey. The voice acting is good but its no where near today standards. At times it feels almost too robotic but if you are fan of Shenmue then that is also part of the game's charm. Original shenmue was all about immersing yourself in the city, working, mini game and going through lots of cut-scene and scripted fights. The same is here, you spend majority of your time to be a detective like person and explore places on your own and slowly unfold a story that both long awaited questions & also leave and open some new topics to the lore of shenmue. Shenhua is the highlight of the game and I feel without her this game would have been a massive failure. Other side of gameplay is completely up to you. You want to engage in the world its your choice, thus for people who are not into narrative games shenmue can become boring but if you are fan of such games then you should be fine. Battles have a very dated arcady feeling and they were not my favourite part of the game. they almost feel like Virtua fighter series but for what it is, they are good and add some variety to the gameplay and depths to our character.
In conclusion, shenmue 3 is a very faithful sequel, i wish the game was more evolved into modern day but judging by its small budget I assume it was the right call to make a game that we all wanted perhaps 15 years ago. Its nostalgic of old times, it reminded me more than the game itself, reminded me the time i discussed about how fascinating shenmue was to my friends at school. if you love shenmue you will not be disappointed. however if you are after game like Yakuza with more focus on fights, skill trees and side quests you might not quiet enjoy this one! this is a game that is designed mostly for existing fans of the original series.
EDIT: After finishing the game today, I want to add to my review how frustrated and disappointed I am in the story and its conclusion. after 40 hours of campaign & 18 years of waiting and donating more than 100$ this is the worst thing ever! i expected lots of questions to be answered and lots of story progressed but instead he just left too many questions unasnwered and also added more to show its potential for sequels! i dont really see any sequel for this game with such a massive stupid ending. Thanks for nothing.

Unlike other games from that period that have made it to this time period such as the new Resident Evil games and the Yakuza games, Shenmue has failed to improve on its existing systems, making its gameplay clunky and awkward. On top of that, the game comes to a screeching halt during the climax. There is no epic boss fight, just an unwinnable one where the bad guy is completely invincible and just throws a few punches before the entire game abruptly ends. The result is that you get a game that is woefully incomplete. At least Shenmue 1 and 2 had the decency to wrap up the story in their respective regions by the conclusion, but Shenmue 3 cannot even do that. Instead, it feels like much of the game's length was being dragged out by arbitrary grinding and the game stopped before the story even began in earnest. Expand

The attention to details is once again astonishing. As a martial arts practiotioner myself, I was really surprised to see how different NPCs performed existing forms with great accuracy. I think it's fair to say that this game is absolutely the best about a correct depiction of real life kungfu. Talking about combat, the new combat system is an evolution of the previous ones. There are no more grappling moves and throws, but it's possible to assign special moves to a single button now.

The graphics are not the top, but with the actual budget of this game, the results are really good in my opinion, About the music... well, absolutely amazing. The only issue overall is the translation. The Italian one at least is not that good, in my opinion.

It's anyway a kind of game that I feel I can strongly suggest to those who didn't play the first two games as well. Shenmue III is a very human story, that will touch your heart with its poetry and atmosphere. I wish there were more games like this nowadays.

I was hoping for a brand new entry in the Shenmue series that would implement all the new things game developers had learned over the past 10 years. I was sorely disappointed to find out that the game is basically one that was shelved for almost 20 years like opening a time capsule with someone's lunch inside. The game industry has moved on and this game (and Yu Suzuki) clearly have not.

The 2nd part was released on the first Xbox. It was not like a revolution anymore but I had a very good time playing the game, the daily routines, earning money.

Today, I can play the first two games on my PS4 Pro - and the third part as well. Technically of course, the gameplay mechanics, they are dated but the graphics are still very appealing and most important: the game is still as fun for me, as in the old days. I like the daily routines, the fights, the mini games and how the world feels realistic. I really enjoy the slow pace, it is an experience for me, after 2-3 days of play I can say, it is a real classic for me. I was a little sceptical, as I don’t enjoy the Yakuza games (too repetitive, too many fights, fights are only button smashers...) but Shenmue is totally different. Both games share the mechanics, but it is the slow pace and the sheer amount of detail that makes Shenmue 3 a much better experience for me.

If you are new to the series, give it a try, try to play at least the first Shenmue on PS4, to fully enjoy an important part of video game history. I would rate the Shenmue games as high as the Mario games or the GTA series: milestones.

Ys Net deserves to be rewarded with modest success for their efforts, and a bigger budget and staff size next time around. If they could manage something like this on so little, a sequel could really take things much further if appropriately funded.

    Nota 10.

Shenmue 3 is amazing and exactly what I was hoping for. If you're considering this game and you're a fan of the first or second. Remember the Wude. To act without hesitation, to do what is right.

Impresionante! Eternamente gracias Yu Suzuki. El alma de Shenmue está intacta.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I literally just completed it, ill say I did enjoy it in the sense that it was more of what ive wanted for 18 freaking years but how does one make a 30 hour game with almost zero story progression? Because Yu actually managed to do that, Its all stick and no carrot outside of just enjoying the experience of playing a Shenmue style game again.

The game did a great job of re-creating the basics of a charming and fun world like the previous games had complete with games, side activities, and things to do. It however on the opposite hand completely failed at bringing together all of that and wrapping it into a story of any significance or even building up meaningful roster of characters for future titles in the series.

The game has a really bad habit of retreading information and topics from the previous titles without adding to them, and it the presentation of that information both visually and language wise is worse. So not only is it redundant but it also basically just fails at presenting its narrative and dialogue well with all the weird cuts and poor translation in the game. A lot of this could have been forgiven if not for the fact the story progression is simply not there. I kept waiting for something meaningful to happen up until the last hour even, and it just never comes.

The combat is mediocre, parries and dodging don't work well and the RPG leveling mechanics present serve to only be a grind and a obstacle in order to slow progression in the game and extend its game-play time. The previous system of a standard fighting games combat was far superior and less of a bogged down grind because it was based off your use of mechanics not building up a number in the system, they need to really tighten that up if they get a chance to do so with a 4th game.

The games cut-scenes have jarring cuts, seem more times than not like filler when they are not repetitive. The polish as a whole is simply no there and feels like it need a lot more time to really come together.
the world, graphics, variety of mini games compared to previous titles, and the overall musical presentation was stellar easily a 8/10. However the story itself hurts the game severely in my eyes for the stated reasons. The finale seemed so promising as its stunning, and really gave you feeling of the game building up to something big and promising and then its over.

First of all I have to say that Shenmue1(+2) were my first open world games to expirience back in the days. That said I love all those cheesy dialogues, japanese (nowadays known as yakuza) creepiness[...] I also love the tank like steering of the character + the virtua fighter light fights. What I hate about S3 is the rural landscape to start of and that there are no more throwing moves.First of all I have to say that Shenmue1(+2) were my first open world games to expirience back in the days. What I hate about S3 is the rural landscape to start of and that there are no more throwing moves. But fu** that - the moment the title screen pops up I forget everything I know about nowadays gaming and I am hooked to my ps4cpad/pc gamepad like an addict coming a long way from rehab. All this cheesiness, and ignorance of 2019 gaming standards keeps me hooked to the screen like I was back in the 90's. I do 't give a flyi g **** about the fact that it looks like an indie game in beta instead of a triple a title it tried to be back in the days. Shenmue3 is just what I wanted it to be...some kind of "antichrist" to nowadays gaming standards and all this blueprinted gaming **** they serve us every day.
I really don't know how the story is moving along after luke 3 hours trollin around in this ****ed up village, but hell yeah shenmue is and has always been a bitter sweet journey...not a concert of wishes from your favorite band to just lay back and enjoy

The game embodies all of the magic that made the first two games special. Controls have been tweaked to play better on current generation hardware. This is a true sequel to a fantastic franchise.

This wasn’t the game that we wanted. It’s so broken that it’s almost unplayable. Tedious, broken and boring. The terrible translation is funny for two minutes, and then it’s just annoying and insulting. Yu Suzuki really dropped the ball here. Instead of making a satisfactory ending he decided to barely move the plot. And there will never be another game in the series after this. Don’t kidThis wasn’t the game that we wanted. It's perfect! There is a special charm of Shenmue / Dreamcast sensibility that cannot be faked!! The game exhibits an artfulness and an appreciation for subtly, atmosphere, technique and the small things in life that can feel lacking in modern gaming. What a breath of fresh air :)

The chunkiness around the edges is not enough to outweigh its triumphs. Also switching to Japanese Voice

The chunkiness around the edges is not enough to outweigh its triumphs. Also switching to Japanese Voice with English Subtitles is a far smoother and more authentic feeling experience with better voice performances being in Yu Suzuki's native language. Same goes for 1 and 2, worth a replay this way if you never have!!

I went straight from beating Shemue 1 and 2 into 3 and it is SEAMLESS.

Better that Yu Suzuki stick to his roots and build up methodically into next-gen, matches the Shenmue sensibility. For me I like running around the spaces, which are beautiful, doing a bit of this and that, talking to random people, new Lucky Hit is AMAZING!! I always enjoyed looking forward to unlocking the next space, new arcades and the next set of kung fu development. How much can I level up to defeat the mini-boss you're not supposed to be able to beat yet?? Was able to accomplish this just like in the originals at level 20!! :D

I'm doing horse stance with Ryo and my thighs are burning up! Lol

Now I'm dreaming if Yu Sazuki could take all of the feedback and experience from Shenmue 3 and blend it into Shenmue 4 with a proper budget!! O_O Now that Yu is caught up to speed and has captured these wonderful vibes as is, where he could go from here would be a league all its own!!

Obra maestra.

What a horrible experience this was. Whatever minuscule redeeming qualities this game might have are drowned out by just how infuriating it is. And I can’t think of anybody who is a fan of this franchise that can honestly call this game good with a straight face. Get this game if you’re a fan of the series, but don’t be surprised if it just ends up making you hate yourself for waiting nearly two decades for what is essentially the video game equivalent of Freddy Got Fingered.

Shenmue 3 is a tough recommendation for general audiences. It won't please the die-hard fans of the originals due the step backwards in terms of game design. Neophytes who are curious about it will be confused and bored by the sleep-inducing pace, plus the how the voice acting has not changed since the early '00s. The visuals may have improved, and the loading times are a thing of the past, but this is still has the soul of a Dreamcast title. It won't live up to the expectations that fans have, nor will it excite interest in the franchise. Nothing of substance gets solved by the conclusion, and there's a lack of a pay-off to playing such an intentionally slow experience. The highs in Shenmue 3 involve doing what amounts to nothing; that is just taking in the atmosphere and exploring.
