After 18 years this feels like the game fans have been waiting for. The graphical improvements from the Dreamcast era are a welcome addition, and other than a different of fighting mechanic (which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion) this feels like a true continuation of a classic series.

This game is the perfect continuation of the story of Shenmue. You have a town to explore, people to met, gambling and jobs, capsule toys and a lot of training/fighting. If you love the previous game, you will love this one for sure. Thank you Yu Susuki san!

Shenmue III doesn't try so hard to be like other modern games and embraces what it is, a Shenmue game. It's a breath of fresh air for the videogame industry and is definitely a true sequel to the Dreamcast originals.

Shenmue III is finally here, a game for the fans and newcomers to enjoy the story of Ryo Hazuki a boy from Japan on a quest to seek revenge for his father murder by the man called Lan Di. I wanna thank the community for never giving up and Yu for believing in us and giving us the third game of Shenmue.

Shenmue 3 is a hard one. it's an unpolished, yet polished diamond that rejects everything modern gaming has to say. Shenmue 3 does this in a splendig, refreshing manner. I'm giving this game 10/10, not as a fan of the series, but rather as a celebrating the game for it's uniqueness, offering something no other game does. Shenmue 3 does this in a splendig, refreshing manner. I'm giving this game 10/10, not as a fan of the series, but rather as a celebrating the game for it's uniqueness, offering something no other game does. And your appreciation for the game comes down to the effort you put into the game yourself.

The biggest problem with Shenmue today, is that people have a hard time grasping what the game actually is. To explain this in the simplest way possible, Shenmue 3 is a story driven, world-simulation, adventure fighting rpg, with a mixture of collecting and micro managing resources.

The story takes place chronologically in a 24h/day system in which every day, even the mundane ones, is being played. A story sequence that could fit into a 10 minute cut scene in a modern game, can take Shenmue 15 hours to complete. The reason for this is that you as a player need to deal with everyday life of the main character Ryo Hazuki. If you are open minded and take your time, you start living and breathing the world of Shenmue, you start worrying about your financial situation, how the earn money effectively, how to become a better martial artist, while at the same time helping the people you start to care for. After 15h in Bailu village, you know every nook and corner, at the same time, you know the inhabitants by name, their personality and when you talk to your friend Shenhua about them you realize that you actually know all the people she is referring to. When NPCs are mere background noise in other games, Shenmue actually presents believable (yet somewhat awkward) characters to the world they inhabit.

I don't think this game is for everybody. But with that being said, If you start playing the game.... think of it as a "world simulator". If you are expecting Uncharted 4 and try to shoehorn those traits into this game, you haven't allowed yourself to be open minded to games in general, or the appreciation of the beauty that is called Shenmue.

We need more Shenmue. because the game is a "one of a kind" that defies the rules of modern (boring) AAA-climate. The game isn't perfect, But I am willing to let these minor stuff pass just out of the sheer complexity of the game.

In some way, yes, I may have improved greatly by a new way of playing, maybe uncharted style, but in some ways, this is SHENMUE fans game, not a corporate money grabber.
If you loved the originals then this is no different. Maybe the future instalments will take a little leap into the modern world of games, but by doing that in a big way, takes the mystic charm away.
This is the underworld indie type game franchise that redefined open world gaming. This game saga deserves so much more respect for what it achieved 20 years ago.
Yes there are tediously annoying things about this game by today’s movie epic gameplays, but this a minor gripe for an otherwise fantastic story, and simplistic gameplay, it’s a stress free game, easy to stroll through and just enjoy.
This game is about the fans, nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes the simple things are all that is needed.
Pick it up, it’s decent, and as a continuation of this story it’s not to be missed. Special game, that isn’t about making money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First thing you need to realise is they’ve tried to make the game as close to the original on purpose. For that reason, the controls are clunky and the camera angles can be annoying sometimes, just like they were on a Shenmue 1 & 2. The graphics are muchly improved, not so much the background and unimportant textures like the grass, but the details on people’s faces and reflections on windows etc. Anyone who claims that the graphics are ‘terrible’ or ‘PS2’ graphics are clearly deluded! Having said that, as I mentioned above, the textures on the less important stuff like the grass are definitely PS3/Xbox 360 graphics. The rest of the game though is definitely PS4 worthy, for instance there are reflections and things on wooden doors that move and such as the door is opened. Could the graphics have been better? Yes they could have, but graphics don’t make the game, the story does that!

I don’t personally see the series picking up many new fans purely down to the clunky controls mentioned above, but for longtime players of both games on the Dreamcast and Shenmue 2 on the OG Xbox they are exactly as I remember! One big advantage this game has over the first two is the huge leap in processing power. The first games were plagued with loading screens, but thanks to the power of the PS4 they are now a thing of the past for most of the game.

I love the new health system, this was something that was planned for Shenmue 1 and 2 but never made it to the final game (despite the fact that you could still buy the food). I also loved the little nods and Easter eggs hidden throughout the game.

A lot of people seem to complain about the games ending but to be honest, any true Shenmue fan would have seen the ending coming a mile away. Yu Suzuki already said countless times before the game launched that the story isn’t even 50% complete.

I always give honest reviews for games, even ones I am a huge fan of as a I believe it’s the only way developers are able to make better titles. Now it’s time to be critical and list the very few things that I didn’t like about the game.

    - The inability to skip dialogue. I can understand not skipping it with main characters, that’s fair. But do I really need to hear the same stuff over and over again when I go to practice martial arts or chop some wood? You can skip it once you’ve listened to it once per day but as soon as you go to sleep you have to listen to it again before you can skip it.

    - The forklift job is only there for nostalgia purposes really. You get paid very little and could earn more money in the same amount of time chopping wood.

    - As I mentioned above, I like the new health system but I really wish running had a separate stamina bar and didn’t result in you losing health.

    P.S.

One final thing the story does that I don’t agree with, there’s a lot of interaction between Ryo and.... Oh never mind, I’m just gonna say it, FOR GOODNESS SAKE KISS THE GIRL ALREADY!!!

(If you're looking for GTA China, this ain't it.) However, given the game's tight budget and production limitations, the game should be considered a masterpiece. The way players are led from situation to situation organically as the story unfolds deserves special note, as when Ryo is playing with children and stumbles on a set of clues. It isn't done via cutscene. It isn't accomplished by forcing the player to do, well, anything. In it's way, it's a freer experience than GTA or Yakuza. There are other things to do than simply go around committing crimes. You are not constantly attacked on the street. You could very well choose to simply idle the days away, and will likely spend a few days doing just that. That's the beauty of the storytelling. Ultimately, you are free enough to invest time and identity into Ryo as a character, making him feel like an extension of yourself. This is probably why those who have gotten into the Shenmue series are so invested into it. It's not just Ryo's story; it has become part of our story. Is the game perfect? No more so than life. Again, that's part of the genius. For those willing to invest the time and operate at the pace intended by the game, this will be an epic experience. For those looking for a quick adrenaline rush, who prefer games with no story and lots of PvP action, this will bore you. (Fortnite junkies beware.) For the real gamers, those who want to be drawn in and transported, this is the game for you. Expand

A game that at that time pushed the boundaries of what was possible within its field, A game that brought innovation in grand scale. A game that carved a path for narrative driven masterpieces like Heavy Rain and Detroit becoming human, just to name a few. Well being the innovator that pushed the agenda on story driven games. In an almost student outperforming what was taught, its successors have taken the narrative and improved the genre tenfold, so playing a game that made so many gaming movements years ago, will not be everyone's cup of tea, based on the modern games of today. If your gaming experience in life consists of time spent on Fortnite or casual trips to candy crush, then this game is not for you. But if you appreciate gaming in its art form from its very inception in the early days, when Pong was innovating on black and white screens. If you've been a gamer since as long as you can remember, treasuring the days when Atari's rocked the gaming markets. games like Out Run, Space Harrier, Hang on and Afterburner chugged through the veins of the Atari ST's massive form factor. then you will appreciate the time and energy spent building these immense game changers. incidentally all of these were developed by the creator of Shenmue. Yu Suzuki, who in my opinion is one of the founding fathers of gaming. What he has created to some may be outdated and stuck in time but to me it’s the continuation of 18 years waiting to find out if Ryo Hazuki finally catches up to Lan Di to dish out the punishment he deserves. Maybe its my nostalgic juices flowing every time Ryo awkward line of conversation draws paths onto the next route leading to the stories ultimate conclusion. or its maybe the immersion in the world around me, by watching as NPC's go about their daily life around me, how real this world feels compared to the generic rail shooters of today, I can’t say i have a modern day favourite, as games are just not made the same way, where graphics outweigh immersion, if gaming is a way to escape the worlds troubles then this game world for me is the best place to get lost in along with its predecessors.
This is more of a love letter than a review because what I've played so far meets my expectations and more. Thank you Yu Suzuki

Today, I can play the first two games on my PS4 Pro - and the third part as well. Technically of course, the gameplay mechanics, they are dated but the graphics are still very appealing and most important: the game is still as fun for me, as in the old days. I like the daily routines, the fights, the mini games and how the world feels realistic. I really enjoy the slow pace, it is an experience for me, after 2-3 days of play I can say, it is a real classic for me. I was a little sceptical, as I don’t enjoy the Yakuza games (too repetitive, too many fights, fights are only button smashers...) but Shenmue is totally different. Both games share the mechanics, but it is the slow pace and the sheer amount of detail that makes Shenmue 3 a much better experience for me.

If you are new to the series, give it a try, try to play at least the first Shenmue on PS4, to fully enjoy an important part of video game history. I would rate the Shenmue games as high as the Mario games or the GTA series: milestones.

Amazing follow up to an amazing story. Shenmue is not just a game, it's also a work of art. You need to take your time with it and just enjoy the atmospheric feel it gives you. For anyone who enjoys modern, fast pace action games I can see them struggling to get into Shenmue. Anyway a beautiful game and I can't wait to see what happens next.

I’m more than happy with the game, I didn’t expect the revolution that the first ones were, now that task belongs to Remedy with GTA series. But nowadays all “open world games” are violent, repetitive, ultra long and not very deep on their stories, so I think Shenmue is more like a very food book you like to read in calm and enjoy the story and fun of it. The fighting system is still one of the best in the insdustry.

So great game, great story, I truly recommend it.

The chunkiness around the edges is not enough to outweigh its triumphs. Also switching to Japanese Voice with English Subtitles is a far smoother and more authentic feeling experience with better voice performances being in Yu Suzuki's native language. Same goes for 1 and 2, worth a replay this way if you never have!!

I went straight from beating Shemue 1 and 2 into 3 and it is SEAMLESS.

Better that Yu Suzuki stick to his roots and build up methodically into next-gen, matches the Shenmue sensibility. For me I like running around the spaces, which are beautiful, doing a bit of this and that, talking to random people, new Lucky Hit is AMAZING!! I always enjoyed looking forward to unlocking the next space, new arcades and the next set of kung fu development. How much can I level up to defeat the mini-boss you're not supposed to be able to beat yet?? Was able to accomplish this just like in the originals at level 20!! :D

I'm doing horse stance with Ryo and my thighs are burning up! Lol

Now I'm dreaming if Yu Sazuki could take all of the feedback and experience from Shenmue 3 and blend it into Shenmue 4 with a proper budget!! O_O Now that Yu is caught up to speed and has captured these wonderful vibes as is, where he could go from here would be a league all its own!!

Yu Suzuki has done what the fans asked: He provided a masterpiece that follows the steps of its predecessors. This third chapter feels a lot more intimate, mainly thanks to the relationship with Shenhua and the other characters.

The attention to details is once again astonishing. As a martial arts practiotioner myself, I was really surprised to see how different NPCs performed existing forms with great accuracy. I think it's fair to say that this game is absolutely the best about a correct depiction of real life kungfu. Talking about combat, the new combat system is an evolution of the previous ones. There are no more grappling moves and throws, but it's possible to assign special moves to a single button now.

The graphics are not the top, but with the actual budget of this game, the results are really good in my opinion, About the music... well, absolutely amazing. The only issue overall is the translation. The Italian one at least is not that good, in my opinion.

It's anyway a kind of game that I feel I can strongly suggest to those who didn't play the first two games as well. Shenmue III is a very human story, that will touch your heart with its poetry and atmosphere. I wish there were more games like this nowadays.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Shenmue III is not as good as the first two, but that is a high bar to reach, and is its only objective flaw. A lot of "critics" may claim that it is archaic and outdated, but it is not. The game is designed in such a way as to appeal to fans of the series, not to bring in new ones, which is fine. Nobody who likes the original games will have such gripes about Shenmue 3. Nobody who likes the original games will have such gripes about Shenmue 3. Personally, my only subjective complaint is the graphics. Shenmue pushed graphics far but Shenmue 3 looks like it could run on an Xbox 360. That is the downside of barely scraping up the funds to even make the game, I suppose, so the scale of the production is totally un-Shenmue in that sense, though it is understandable.

Ignore the bad and even the middling reviews--if you are a fan of the series with a reasonable set of expectations, you won't be disappointed. IGN reviewed Pokemon Sword & Shield, praising them for evolving despite being the worse in the series, but then rips into Shenmue III. It really shows you how out of touch critics are from real gamers.

Despite the crazy and sometimes awful mid-production teasers and trailers both the original fanbase and newcomers won't find a single flaw in this game.

Great game, super. Up to the expectations for hardcore fans and new gamers. It suffers from uneven reviews.

A reminiscent of its earliest instalments with a few more things added to the fray. If you're looking for a 90s throwback but with a modern touch, this is it!

What a horrible experience this was. Whatever minuscule redeeming qualities this game might have are drowned out by just how infuriating it is. And I can’t think of anybody who is a fan of this franchise that can honestly call this game good with a straight face. Get this game if you’re a fan of the series, but don’t be surprised if it just ends up making you hate yourself for waiting nearly two decades for what is essentially the video game equivalent of Freddy Got Fingered.

Shenmue 3 is a tough recommendation for general audiences. It won't please the die-hard fans of the originals due the step backwards in terms of game design. Neophytes who are curious about it will be confused and bored by the sleep-inducing pace, plus the how the voice acting has not changed since the early '00s. The visuals may have improved, and the loading times are a thing of the past, but this is still has the soul of a Dreamcast title. It won't live up to the expectations that fans have, nor will it excite interest in the franchise. Nothing of substance gets solved by the conclusion, and there's a lack of a pay-off to playing such an intentionally slow experience. The highs in Shenmue 3 involve doing what amounts to nothing; that is just taking in the atmosphere and exploring.
