First as comparison, I gave 10/10 to tomb raider 9 (2013), 4/10 to rise of tomb raider because of the numerous bugs.
The graphics of this game is still at the top level. The story is overall good. But, the game design and the battles are too similar to the previous 2 games.

Aesthetically, it is by far the most impressive Tomb Raider game and gives Uncharted 4 a run for its money (at least graphically). I even prefer it over Rise of the Tomb Raider because I felt the snowy environments in that one made for a visually repetitive experience. The gameplay here is also far more dynamic than its ever been; A much deeper emphasis on stealth, and the combat environments allow for more aerial traversal that wasn't as prevalent in previous entries. I also thought the parkour segments were very impressive, giving you a plethora of new tools that make exploration feel brand new again. It makes the climbing segments in Jedi Fallen Order feel like an absolute joke in comparison. There's weight to every impact. Even though it's generally pretty easy, I always feel like I'm scurrying by a thin thread. Swinging off ropes is so exhilirating like a rollercoaster ride. It's as enjoyably cinematic as you'd want.

Story-wise, I found the game to be a little more by-the-numbers, but there were definitely some series highlights with Lara's childhood flashback sequence and a nice emphasis on her friendship with Jonah. I can't even remember the villain's name or what he really wanted, and he overall doesn't have a strong presence throughout the story, but I can at least say that exploring tombs and uncovering the big mystery was more than enough to stay interested in Lara's plight. She just seems so desperate and you can't help but route for her as she throws her life on the line. It's also refreshing for the genre that instead of raiding tombs for treasure, Lara is trying to prevent bad people from raiding them.

I think one of the bigger falters was unfortunately Shadow's newest integration: There's plenty of side missions and a hub-world to explore but I never cared to do any of it. The biggest problem with them is not only their fetch-quest nature, but their automated cutscenes. My biggest pull for the Tomb Raider reboots have always been their top-notch motion capture performances and the work Camila Luddington puts into her role. All of that is still present in the main story. But that caliber of storytelling sadly gets lost in the procedural cutscenes, and it doesn't help that the stories within them are not all that interesting. I think it works in games like Fallout and Skyrim that are built around a sandbox world, but in a linear game like Tomb Raider, it just grinds the momentum to a halt. Thankfully they're largely skippable, but it unfortunately makes the game feel on the shorter side by choosing to ignore them.

Ultimately, I'd rather have a 10-12 hour game full of highlights and fun moments than a 19 hour game that feels stretched out. I'd probably say Shadow is my 2nd favorite of the reboot trilogy. It has the best gameplay and graphics by far, so I definitely see it having a higher replayability than the others. But I still think the first reboot game has a far more memorable and compelling story. And all the gameplay mechanics that are expanded and refined in Shadow, wouldn't exist without that game. Shadow still makes for a worthwhile entry, but I would be sad if this is really the closer for the franchise. It makes for a good closer in a Skyfall kind of way, but definitely leaves me craving more. I don't know if I'm ready to say goodbye to this version of Lara.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider spricht also vor allem unseren Forschergeist und unsere Rätselfreude an, weniger den Action Fan.

However in the case of this game it made it very hard to enjoy and appreciate the game. There's no difference in combat difficulty between Hard and Deadly Obsession, the only difference being no save points (you die you have to redo the whole level again), so I can't find much point in the harder difficulty. It was beyond frustrating because I only died once in the entire game due to the difficulty of the combat. The other times I died were due to camera angle malfunctions and glitches in the platforming meaning I had redo 30-40 minutes of gameplay again that I solved first run with combat simply because I missed a jump by the smallest of margins. This really detracted from the game for me. The story and general gameplay was good but found the difficulty and difficulty to get the trophy pointless. No dying doesn't make a game more challenging. The combat health and puzzles are what do. Put that aside though, and it wa still a great game. Expand

The most annoying I find are the quick-time eventish running scene where you are basically always running from something and have to react to falling things and stuff, they aren't real QTEs so there's no button prompts but you still have to memorise what do on each step and it's usually not obvious at all so it just becomes annoying. The camera is sometimes quite bad and especially swimming is torture. Other than that there is no big problems in the game. The music is top notch and the voice acting is passable. I kind of like using native languages for npc's but calling it immersive is quite absurd, that's not quite how it works in real world. Expand

It’s a very fun game. The story wasn’t particularly compelling for me, but the open-world gameplay and environmental puzzles were a lot of fun. The crafting system was engaging—albeit limited—and the combat was consistently entertaining. While I ultimately preferred Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a worthy addition to the modern franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Great story and visuals - my first Tomb Raider game in probably about 15 years, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Takes a while to complete if you are looking at doing side stories!

The only cons are: gets a little repetitive, going around collecting resources - you will probably spend half your gameplay time doing just that. Sometimes the characters' lip movements are out of synch.

The combat itself is varied with a mixture of weapons and custom ammunition and is challenging fun when you actually get some. There is nowhere enough combat content to justify the amount of collectibles and skills which in turn left the game feeling imbalanced. A big shout out though to the couple of playable set pieces that occur throughout the game.

The biggest let down however is the story here which is simply boring. Compared to the bases and facilities of Trinity in the last game which made them seem like a genuine threat, here we have none of that and all we get is a primitive South American jungle village with no memorable characters. Billed as the moment when Lara Croft finally becomes the Tomb Raider we know and love, frankly I don't see it happen here. It is so focused on the main storyline that anything personal seems to be lost except for a moment at the end. To be honest I thought the ending of 2013's Tomb Raider did a better job at establishing Lara as the Tomb Raider we know her to be.

The game play is familiar and fun and of course the gorgeous visuals will keep you playing and exploring and collecting all these items. For me however this is a bit of a disappointment and a step down from the outstanding two preceding games.

This third one is just more of the same but it does not taste as good. Campfires to upgrade, locked content until you have a particular gear and/or weapon, exploration, kills, rinse and repeat. It's not bad, it just feels... less inspired. And I also think this new game does not look as good and polished as the first two... it feels kind of rushed to be honest. Some of Lara's facial expressions are atrocious.

It's a nice game to have some casual, adventure fun for 15/20 hours. And that's it. Kind of a weird end for the trilogy though... thought they would end it with a bang, and I was left with: ok, thanks I guess.

This Lara reboot lacks soul. Look how amazing the Uncharted series is. Those games have jaw dropping moments. This new Tomb Raider series is just about killing, upgrading stuff and finding caves while avoiding some mysterious threat to destroy the world.

Tombs are more numerous this time, and generally well-designed, with better ones reserved for DLCs. Combat and climbing are serviceable, but nothing special. The addition of a rope is welcome, but its uses are limited throughout the game, sadly.

The main weakness is, also still, the game's story, which largely mirrors Rise's, starts out in an intriguing way, but slows down to a halt promptly. Croft mostly acts like a whiny b**ch, her "lost my parents" backstory still doesn't make you care, Jonah is still an annoying friendzone type ("R U OK, LARAH?" constitutes 50+% of his dialogue), Trinity is a lame antagonist, and the aboriginal allies are forgettable cliches. The franchise continues to suffer from an identity crisis, with its gameplay mechanics more honed towards open-world style, while the levels are mostly tight limiting corridors. Plus, there is a strong imbalance in favor of exploration at the expense of combat, so you spend the majority of the game unlocking combat skills only to use them a handful of times. The game tries to stretch itself, as that's what AAA games are expected to do nowadays, unfortunately, so we also get a number of side missions, which are split into alright tomb missions and horrendously boring fetch quests, where only the strongest won't skip through the cringy dialogues and free 4 prisoners / talk to 5 natives / read 3 murals / etc.

The Tomb Raider reboot started out strong, but took a step back with its sequel, and a new developer studio couldn't shake things up. It's just an alright game worth picking up at a discount with all the DLCs included, which is a shame, as the potential to be something greater is still there.

By focusing on exploration, stealth, and using the bow and arrow instead of constant gunfights, the game manages to be more unique and memorable instead of just being an inferior Uncharted. There's also less grindy collectable crap, which is a plus.

The story is pretty mediocre, but I wasn't too bothered by that. Most side characters are rather lame, but I did appreciate how Jonah was given a bigger role than in Rise. Lara's voice acting is great, even if some of the lines feel cheesy.

There was also a little too much swimming for my liking.

Its a 6.5 for me and here is why.
Its not a bad game to kill time and relax your brain waiting for something good to come out.
Story and game play where fun at start but at the middle to end got predictable and repetitive. Linear if you follow objective markers. Spamming the Lara senses button makes exploring the world for secrets an easy task. And the worst part is you cant stop, every

Linear if you follow objective markers. Spamming the Lara senses button makes exploring the world for secrets an easy task. And the worst part is you cant stop, every few steps hit that key, set your marker, go get stuff, rince and repeat. Tomb puzzles easy, and rewards for them are meaningless. No real boss fights. Ammo everywhere. Graphics and overall look are ok. Some fun shooting action moments. Finished with 91% completion, and not even thinking of doing another play trough, ever.

Shallow story aside, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has the best tomb exploration in the series, and that’s what it’s all about.

Still very good, but in some ways weaker than the previous game. Still, fans shouldn’t miss it, just because it is the conclusion of the trilogy. [Issue#289]

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It’s as mixed up of a bag as one can get.
