    Separation offers two to three hours of exploration and puzzle solving into a moody but charming and strange world that only VR technology can deliver.

    For what it is, Separation is an enjoyable couple of hours. Its graphics may not be the best on the platform and its gameplay may be a bit on the thin side but what you are left with is a very bleak and personal journey. A journey through a barren landscape set to an amazing soundtrack that constantly propels you onward to your goal. It is a relaxing experience that I think most players will enjoy.

    More than a game, Separation is a poignant testimony entirely conceived and developed by a single man, bruised and suffering from depression following the loss of a loved one. Martin Wheeler simply opened his heart to tell us about the evil that consumed him, in the form of a PlayStation VR game that deserves our attention.

    Separation isn’t likely to garner a lot of attention. It’s not flashy and is definitely indie (developer Recluse Industries is really just one guy), but there’s a distinct appeal to a game where the whole point is to soak up a moody, solitary, and evocative atmosphere. There’s no explanation or tutorial to sit through, the game just starts with a simple message and lets the player figure things out on their own. It’s not a bad way to spend a few hours, but probably not a game that will linger on your hard drive either.

    Seeing that Wheeler created Separation by himself over a period of four years is an impressive accomplishment, especially considering the subject matter which inspired the experience. The atmospheric visuals and soundtrack are what carry Separation, reminiscent of titles like ICO. However, it becomes a little too monotonous and at times the emotion the title tries to portray feels indistinct as if it has lost its own way in this vast open landscape.

    Separation is a game with something to say, it just spends too long trying to say it. While I wanted to fall for its wistful mountain climbs and poignant canyon descents, I became too frustrated with its tedious core treasure hunt to stop and pay its wider implications much mind. I suspect that some will make those connections, lost in the game’s alluring fog, but many more will be done with this pilgrimage long before it’s over.

While some will try it and quickly decide it's slow and boring, others will find themselves lost in its beauty and desolation. It is perfect for VR in that it is more of a personal journey/experience with game elements. It has an amazing synth score and the wind swept sounds as you ascend high mountains, or float over them, are perfect. All along you are spurred along by a strange whispering that seems to follow you. Finally, it's topped off by an ending that is as haunting as it is ineffable.… Expand

    The most astonishing fact about this game, is that it was made by one person (beside the music). And the most disappointing fact are the graphics, which could be from the midst 90s. If not played in VR-Mode, I couldn't recommend it at all, as on a flat 2D-Screen there is actually no reason to play this. Even in VR-Mode, the immersion lacks quite often as the absence of details and bold, blurry visuals ruin everything.

    Unfortunately, really, what the maker tries to build up is awesome, sound/music is great, but it's just like a raw version of what this should have become and in the end I really had to force myself to finish it. I can only recommend to wait when it's on sale - as a tryout, it's certainly overpriced for what it delivers at the moment.    … Expand
