Resogun is one of Housemarque's best games to date. It's addicting and inventive and offers more than enough content to satisfy a good while.

Fun, bright and challenging! The only downfall of this game is how fast it can be completed, maybe this is a chance for a series to grow into something big!

This game is relatively short but it is packed with action as a side scroller shooter. The platinum in this game is also relatively easy and can be done from start to finish in less than 12 hours. If you are into bullet hell type of games and enjoy shooting from a space ship this game is for you.

Fantastic game which honours Defender, respects it, brings it into the modern era. Everything about it is brilliantly done; it's smooth, playable, addictive, it looks incredible, the difficulty curve is so well-judged.

Housemarque seem to have this ability to make games which are insanely addictive and challenging, yet so much fun they're never annoying. Nex Machina is another example.

Played the hell out of Resogun. It was addictive and so much fun.

My only cretinism to the studio is that tried to milk the success of the game by trying to sell you content that should've been included in the already very short game to start with.

You can only shoot horizontally (no 360 degrees shooting) so you also have to maneuver the ship to avoid enemies. Resogun isn't an original or groundbreaking game, but it's highly addictive and joyful to play. It's got great voxel-based 3D graphics (you can notice it especially when exploding parts of the stage with a bomb) and runs at 60 fps. The base game was rather short but it got expanded with a series of DLCs. The developers added, among other things, a ship editor (you can create a ship with the stats and shape of your choice), challenges, and a new mode called Defenders (you play as a ground-based human waiting to be rescued by a ship). You can even play in co-op in some of the modes. I wholeheartedly recommend Resogun to all retro arcade fans. Expand

I had the game sitting in my games list on ps4 for about 3 months and played a little bit during that time, not too much; but when my trophy fever started I played the hell out of it and got the Platinum in the end. Aliens have invaded 5 planets and taken the last of the humans. Your mission is to destroy the aliens and save the remaining humans of each planet.

The Levels are cylindrical, you move in circles through each stage which allows you to see what else is happening on other parts of the level. This is a refreshing approach that adds to the fun of the game as you will have to stay aware of your surroundings, such as keeping an eye on the humans that you will save, dodging falling debris from the galaxy and attacking enemies from all sides.

The humans are locked in boxes and are only freed when you kill specific enemies called keepers highlighted in green. This frees the humans from the box, you will then have to pick them up and bring them back to safety pods which earns you points and upgrades.

The controls are simple, you control your ship with the left analog stick and shoot with the right. you can only shoot left and right which fits perfectly for this type of game. The shoulder buttons are used for boosts , that speeds you through enemies, bombs that should be used only when necessary, and an overdrive power, which creates a powerful attack that destroys many enemies.

The visuals are rich with many things happening at the same time without a drop in the frame rate, details such as the rain and lightning are impressive to look at while playing and the music fits well with the game play. The enemies are varied, with their own health and attacks. You fight a boss at the end of each level; however, not all boss fights are challenging.

The multiplier system is engaging as you will have to keep your score up by firing at enemies to earn points. Not doing so for a couple of seconds brings your multiplier points back down, this system is tense and rewarding. It is a shame that Resogun is short because the game is addictive with a lot of replayability. You can even play the game coop offline and online. Resogun is a good game that succeeds in delivering a fast paced shoot em up that i worth your time.

My only problem with the game would be sometimes there is so much going on,on the screen that out of nowhere a bullet or something hits you and you cant see it through all the explosions and since this is a one hit kill game it can get frustrating, especially if you are trying to beat the game without losing all your lives.... Also sometimes when you are trying to get your multiplier up you can lose it from there being no enemies on the screen.. The game will have like 400 enemies attacking you at one time and the next minute there may not be any and it doesn't take long before your multiplier resets to 1.00.... Or it could be I just suck at getting my multiplier up.lol..

The game is short with 5 levels but there is a lot of replayability especially if you are a trophy hunter. There are also leaderboards and 3 different ships to try with different strengths and weaknesses.

I don't normally play shoot-em-ups. Those games aren't really my thing. But when you make a SHMUP look THIS pretty, and you give it awesome yet very different ship types and level designs, I can't really help but LOVE this GAME.

Sure, it's fun to beat the game once on EASY mode. since all you have to do is beat one level at a time with 3 lives each level. But it's a LOT more fun when you give yourself goals. Like "Beat the whole game on "Veteran" without losing your 3 lives and having to start the level over", or "Beat this level on "Experienced" without dying or losing your multiplier, AND saving all the humans". I do this all the time with Resogun, and without me even knowing it I realized I'm in the TOP 100 on the leaderboards on almost every level. I knew I was pretty good but I didn't know I was TOP 100 good!

I can admit that for SOME people, this game may be a little short. Afterall, some people just like to beat the game and that's it. But honestly, I don't think you beat the game until you beat the game on at least Experienced difficulty without losing your 3 lives. Normally, if you lose your 3 lives by the 3rd level, it'll start you over at the 3rd level with another 3 lives. So I don't think it's fair to say you "Beat" the game if you lose those 3 lives every level.

Resogun might not be for everyone, and it's a little short if you don't at least get 75% of the trophies. But even if YOU don't like it, that don't mean it's a bad game, it's just not your style of game. Because as far as SHMUPS go, this is the absolute BEST there IS to offer, PERIOD! So don't rate it badly just because it's a SHMUP, rate it on how good of a SHMUP it is.

    I can't give Resogun anything less than a 10/10!

This game defines the phrase "don't judge a game by its cover". Once you play this game you don't stop. You will love this game once you start playing it and the difficulties change it up every time including the bosses getting harder with more hit points and moves they throw at you. Play with friends too. They help on harder difficulties especially master.

EXCEPTIONAL - With varying difficulties, the game is a good way to compete with yourself, and others. The art style is beautiful and the mechanics work amazing. I wish the game had more levels but since I have some friends that beat my scores, i'll focus on being better than them. If you're competitive, this is a great game to be competitive with.

    Resogun - a Beautiful Blow'Em Up

Resogun is one of the most fun video game experiences I've had in a while. This is a subjective opinion, of course, since I've always enjoyed these spaceship shooter types and I haven't played a good one for some time. Learning curve: Resogun presents its player with frenetic action with several ships, shots and explosions on screen at the same time.
    Resogun - a Beautiful Blow'Em Up

Resogun is one of the most fun video game experiences I've had in a while. This is a subjective opinion, of course, since I've always enjoyed these spaceship shooter types and I haven't played a good one for some time.

    Learning curve:
Resogun presents its player with frenetic action with several ships, shots and explosions on screen at the same time. And while this is a tremendously fun and rewarding experience when you call pull things off right it can also be extremely frustrating when you're still trying to get the hang of things.
You see, the player is not only tasked to essentially blow everything that moves and shoots against you but also save 10 humans in each level.
These 10 humans all start imprisoned within a cage and it's the player's task to open them and safely deliver the humans to a rescue ship.
The only problem with this is that there are very little in game clues to how exactly do you get the humans out of their cages. Don't get me wrong, the game does provide some clues but in the middle of frenetic action where staying alive is already a demanding task, I found that noticing these clues was rather hard.

However, once you understand the mechanics behind the game everything will go much smoother.

    Graphics:
Resogun is very simplistic in its presentation but it contains also a lot of eye-candy components.
When I say simplistic, I mean that most of the game's models are made out of cubes. Yes simple cubes and yet it's so well made that it took me some gaming hours to realize this. Unlike Minecraft, Resogun doesn't have a "shove a cube in your sight because it simplifies our development process" attitude. The cubes are very well organized and presented in a way that it is never a sore to the eyes and frankly it's quite hard to notice that they're just cubes.

Each one of its levels has a theme and everything in it (enemies, background and bosses) are designed to match that theme.

The best part of Resogun's presentation is, by far, its particle system. The explosions are just gorgeous and there are so many flying little pieces of what used to be a horde of enemies when you blow them up. It's quite spectacular!

    Gameplay:
There are 3 ships to choose from in Resogun: Nemesis (very agile with high turbo and low overdrive), Ferox (balanced agility, turbo and overdrive) and Phobos (low agility and turbo and high overdrive). Agility represents how fast a ship can move, turbo makes your ship go faster and ends in an explosion and Overdrive is a special attack where the ship emits arcs of lighting that destroy everything in their path.
The Turbo feature in a ship represents how fast turbo regenerates and how long it lasts and the Overdrive feature in a ship represents how far these lightning arcs go, how long Overdrive mode lasts and how fast you regenerate the Overdrive bar.
When using either Turbo or Overdrive your ship becomes invincible and that's something to have in mind in the higher difficulty settings.
This means that Turbo can be used to escape a harsh situation but it can also be used offensively since you'll destroy any enemy (except for bosses) you hit while in Turbo mode.

Each ship has its own upgradeable firing method as well. Nemesis has homing missiles that are great for crowd control, Ferox gets a wider shooting area and Phobos has a very powerful shot (with smaller very short range wide spread shots) that is great to take down the bosses.

There are only 5 levels in the game that won't take up too much of your time if you play Resogun in the easier difficulty settings. These levels have high replay value which confers some longevity to the game.
The levels can be played either solo or in the 2 player co-op mode. The co-op mode isn't anything groundbreaking but it's a very nice and fun addition and it offers a bit of variety.
The co-op mode, however, can only be played on-line which, for me, was a bit of a disappointment since this game cries out for a split-screen mode.
Unfortunately, when I played on-line, there weren't that many other players so getting into a game was a bit of a hassle and when I did manage to play a game, my partner had tendency to quit the game after just one level.

    Verdict:
All things considered, Resogun is a very enjoyable game that provides some hours of a screen full of action packed explosions and mayhem. I highly recommend it to any fan of this genre in spite of its learning curve and lack of offline co-op.

PS.: I'm a proud holder of Resogun's Platinum Trophy.

Addictive. At first my jury was out because I really didn't get the overall point, but after playing and learning a little more (I watched some live streams to see how people were approaching this one and it helped significantly) I was able to really get into it. Unlike some of these extreme raters on here I won't be giving any 10s or 0s, 1s, 2s just because I did or did not like it so itAddictive. Unlike some of these extreme raters on here I won't be giving any 10s or 0s, 1s, 2s just because I did or did not like it so it will get the highest rating that I will give to a game that isn't life changing or revolutionary.
The basic premise is to get the highest score via staying alive, saving humans by eliminating "keepers" which are enemies that typically appear in groups and only stay on screen for a short time, then collecting those humans before they are killed and returning them to a safe point, all while trying to keep your combo meter from resetting. You get about 5 seconds to shoot something before you lose your combo. The game is played on a cylindrical map so you essentially are just going in circles, which is nice for seeing what is coming and going around you. The easier difficulty levels can become a bit boring, but are great for learning the game. Once you get to the later veteran levels and any of the master difficulty levels it becomes a frantic and pleasantly frustrating experience. It is not easy on master. I repeat, it is NOT easy. I have restarted the first level a good 40 times in the last day since I am pushing myself to get a perfect run on master. The boss fights are fun and can become challenging. The game is great for fans of the R-Type or Gradius series'. And the best part if the price. It is completely free at this point. Whether or not they will release any paid content later is anyone's guess, but for now it is free. I strongly suggest you check it out. If you are a casual gamer that just plays CoD, GTA, and BF then you may be disappointed, but any gamer that really likes a simple, yet addictive and challenging experience should give this a go.

It is quite possibly better even than the original Defender, and most certainly catchier and more fun than the Defender clones out there besides Resogun, which makes its own mark on that title. Three ships, simple gameplay, and the promise of a glorious battle are what make Resogun replayable and memorable in the PS4's otherwise decent lineup. Definitely my tied for first or second favorite title in the launch pool because of the beauty in graphics, the simple aim, and the classic combat and hectic bullet-hell like shooting going on. The skill curve and the already difficult, ramped up combat only serve to make it more fun and energizing to play. Having a great run will fill you with adrenaline like nothing else this past year.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. I've rarely agreed with this statement as much as I do in the case of Resogun. Every single trailer I saw for this game make it look boring, graphically unimpressive, and unoriginal. Boy, was I wrong. As someone who hasn't played a shoot-em-up since Dead Nation or Star Fox 64, I thoroughly enjoyed Resogun and everything it had to offer. But I'm a gamer who enjoys a challenge, and this game might not be for everyone, because it's damn hard. But that's the fun of it. It's a treat to play the same level over and over again. It's awesome watching twenty enemies all being blasted in to hundreds of tiny pieces at once. You know it's a great game when you die at the final boss, and have no problem pressing the "Restart Level" button.

So many particle physics to make your head spin, and environments that gradually crumble around you. It is certainly a stress test for the PS4, yet it suffers NO LAG WHATSOEVER.

The only downside to this game is that it can get repetitive rather quickly, and has nothing to really follow on to; no real story, not even really any background information, besides some explanation for some of the levels. A stunning game, and quite a lot of replayability, but repetition feels like it is eating away at the enjoyment in the game, and it would be great to see some variety. But for what it is, a retro style shooter, and what it seems to be, a PS4 tech demo, it plays it's part beautifully. Well worth a buy.

If you remember losing quarters in your local arcade, you will recognize Resogun’s structure. Taking homage to classic arcade shooters of old, Resogun’s visual style as well as its simple gameplay mechanics give players a great welcome into the next generation, as Geometry Wars did for the Xbox 360. Resogun is smaller game for new console owners to show off the horsepower of the PS4. ButIf you remember losing quarters in your local arcade, you will recognize Resogun’s structure. But as you look under the hood, you will find an old shoot ‘em up that isn’t shy of showing off its inspirations.

The gameplay to Resogun is that of a classic twin stick shooter, use the left stick to move and the right to fire and get rid of all enemy on screen. But Resogun adds a new twist to the formula; along with exterminating all enemy ships on screen the player is tasked with rescuing all the humans on the planet to save them from ‘Armageddon.’ The only way to save humans is by defeating certain enemies that appear on screen at the given time. These ‘Keepers’ are green ships that appear onscreen for a limited time and must be destroyed before they eliminate their human prisoner. This adds tension as players will dodge and weave through enemy ships in search of ‘Keepers’ before they can escape. Saving humans can aid players, as helping them can give special perks such as bombs and extra lives.

During a level, players are tasked in destroying enemy ships and saving humans, filling up a phase bar at the bottom of the screen. Once the phase bar is full, a boss ship appears and the phase bar acts as the boss ship's health bar. Once the boss is defeated, the player's ship escapes the planet moving onto the next msssion.

As any arcade shooter, the game is meant to challenge and harden the player. After several rounds, the player will learn to master each level as well as learn to control and maintain each battle. The game is more forgiving than most arcade shooters, but also more rich and complex as well. Not only must you dodge projectiles, you must also be wary of enemies coming from both sides of the screen as well as humans to deliver to safety. Each is simple in itself but difficultly stems from doing everything at once.

The visuals of Resogun are absolutely stunning. The game is sharp and glowing filled with particles everywhere. As you destroy ships, the ships explode, leaving debris everywhere in its wake, showering onto the battlefield. During the end of the mission, the level explodes into hundreds of particles as your ship races across the level, leaving a stunning fireworks show.

However I can’t let my enthusiasm for the game cloud my judgment. As much fun as the game may be it is very short with only five levels in total. Along with that, Resogun lacks any real variety other than arcade mode and leaderboards. Other shooters of this genre often contain endless modes where a player would fight until their last life. No mode such as this exists, which is surprising given its genre. Another issue I have with the game is that there is no option for co-op other than online co-op. For such a smaller game, a local coop option would feel refreshing entering into the next generation of consoles.

Resogun is an excellent game for the beginning of the PS4’s life. Its small scope may leave players finishing the game completely in a few hours, but its simple controls and spectacular light show visuals will keep players coming back for more quick play sessions. Resogun collides everything players want from a classic arcade shooter and blends them together creating a gorgeous visual laser light show.

Actually one of the best on the PS4 and a PS4 exclusive, the game is beautiful with explosions and voxels or whatever they're called all over the screen.

Game is simple, Save the humans is your only objective but on the hardest difficulty, the game can get ridiculously hard. Game has the option of Co-op too

Resogun is a dual stick shooter I picked up for free at the PS4 launch. It's short but incredibly fun once you figure out what's going on. It's got a fast, almost frantic pace, but you have just enough options to mix things up and escape tight spots.

Using the left stick, you move a small fighter plane around a series of circular arenas. Pushing the right stick in a direction fires your innumerable weapons against your even more innumerable foes. In the midst of this, you're supposed to pick up human survivors and get them to safe spots.

For anyone into fast-paced arcade-style games, I'd call it well worth checking out.

One of the most addicting and frustratingly hard games of the next generation games. The visuals are stellar, and the controls are tight and responsive. Everything you can ever ask for in an arcade style game.

Simple yet entertaining. One of the best features is that voice sounds are played through the controller making it feel like i have a co-pilot giving me directions. Visuals are just stunning coupled with intense music to accompany you through the levels. Of all the games i have, this is the only one i come back to everyday.

Solid gameplay in the vein of classic side scrolling shooters. Interesting gameplay mechanics that provide good learning curve. Beautiful graphics which give a taste of new hardware capabilities. Easily one of the best titles at launch, and free price tag (with PS+) makes it a must play game.

At the U.S. launch I got Killzone, Call of Duty, and Battlefield 4. As a perk for buying the PS4 we got Resogun and Contrast for free. While I enjoyed all these games (minus Contrast which I haven't tried) my favorite so far is Resogun, I love this game and I can't stop playing it even after getting the platinum trophy for it.

While I enjoyed all these games (minus Contrast which I haven't tried) my favorite so far is Resogun, I love this game and I can't stop playing it even after getting the platinum trophy for it.

The game is very simple and yet so hard. You fly in one of three ships that you can choose, in spherical stages. Enemy ships will spawn and you've got to kill them before they kill you. There's five stages, each with their own unique enemies. Each stage has ten humans that are being held captive and it's up to you rescue them. Each human that is rescued gives you either a points bonus, a shield, an extra life, or a bomb. You rescue humans by killing the keepers (they glow green) or by reaching a specific amount of multiplier, which opens up a cage and a human hops out and you have to pick them up and carry them to a transporter. Each stage ends with a boss fight, and the bosses are fun and challenging depending on which ship you chose.

The graphics are simply amazing and the music is perfect for this game. The developers have said that the PS3 isn't powerful enough to play this game. The music is so good and it keeps you pumped up and helps you stay awake and alert. The music reminds me of the soundtrack from Tron: Legacy.

There's 5 difficulty levels (rookie, experienced, veteran, master, hero) so if the default experienced difficulty is too hard for you then you'll probably enjoy rookie more. The only level I haven't tried yet is hero because even though I platinumed this game I'm still not good enough to unlock hero, you have to beat Master without using continues which is really hard to do. I'm practicing every day to improve my skills so that I can unlock hero. Also competing against your own personal records and the records from the world's top players is a ton of fun although I'm scared of what's going to happen once the Japanese get their hands on this game on February 22, 2014
