A really fun game, filled with fast-paced, side-scrolling beat ’em up action. It brings gamers back to days spent in arcades pumping quarters into machines. It may not do too much in terms of new, but what is available is polished and extremely enjoyable.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Overdrive is a solid brawler that gets a little bit of a boost on the PS4 simply because the system doesn't yet have a comparable brawler.

Phantom Breaker: Battlegrounds Overdrive is a solid game with a steep learning curve without much in the way of tutorials. For those with patience to learn its intricacies, it is extremely rewarding, and a ton of fun. For those looking for a casual romp through a mindless beat ‘em up, this is not the game for you.

A decent game that's fun to play, but is even more fun if you have a friend or two that can play with you. The online play is smooth and there are some hidden things that can be unlocked like more difficulty levels and more characters.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Overdrive has all the components of an addictive, satisfying beat-'em-up, but it just doesn't harmonise them as well as it should.

Very entertaining im having a blast with this game

The sprites are bright, colorful and beautifully made using big head small body chibi anime models , the way the sprites are drawn looks very similar to scott pilgrim vs the world, There are many different baddies to fight in the game ranging from cyborg businessmen to aliens to robots(which do have color variants to represent harder versions of themselves). The music tracks are fantastic and really go well with the atmosphere of the game (pretty much all the ass kicking that will ensue ). Using chiptunes in similar fashion to how scott pilgrim did but don't let the looks and audio fool you, this isn't scott pilgrim... .at all.

you start off with 4 characters but later unlock 4 more after completing the game (and one more optional character you can buy as DLC along with a level cap break if you feel the level 50 cap isnt enough) . you will be spending most of your time playing the story mode multiple times while increasing in difficulty in order to power up your characters and also unlock new abilities that will make them more flexible and easier to handle as he/she gets stronger.

At first glance you would think this to feel like a brawler like streets of rage or scott pilgrim but the moment you play the game you learn that it actually feels more like a fighting game in its controls with a button to switch between the foreground and background of the stage to fight on. This really ramps up the learning curve for those you aren't accustomed to that play style, you'll find yourself dying alot until you get the basic mechanics of the game down. However once you do the game gets exponentially better and more enjoyable especially when playing the higher difficulty where all of the more advanced moves and counters will really count.

unfortunately the game is pretty short with only about seven levels to play around with so all you have beyond the stages is your increasing difficulty playthroughs and online play. Also when you reach higher difficulties the game becomes pretty hard to track with hoards of enemies filling up the screen making it extremely difficult to see whats going on. The boss battles although pretty engaging, also are ridiculously difficult when compared to the challenges the level they where located had to offer. Despite these hitches not being great they aren't terrible either since this a game has very high replay-ability.... seriously, you will literally be playing this game over and over again trying to get all your characters to max.....it is that addicting.

I definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants a good and yet different type of beat em up game. It was worth the money.

This is a spin-off of "Phantom Breaker," which is a fighting game for the Xbox 360 and is also an improved re-release of "Phantom Breaker:This is a spin-off of "Phantom Breaker," which is a fighting game for the Xbox 360 and is also an improved re-release of "Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds." Overdrive improves upon the original "Battle Grounds" by offering more enemies, more combos/moves and 'different paths.' As it turns out, it's a pretty solid 'beat em up.' Unlike traditional beat em' ups where most of the time you can get by just fine by button mashing, this game actually requires some strategy and knowledge of the moves. Even when levelling up, boss battles can be quite tough even on Normal difficulty. Although the game is relatively short, it has a ton of replay value and the multiplayer is pretty fun with friends. 8/10 Full Review »
