Even if I wasn't very excited about the Musou style combat, I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for story. At the end of the day, the combat was actually my favorite part of the game. However the rushed story and lack of character moments for the main cast really impacted my enjoyment of the game by quite alot.
Starting with the combat, its actually closer to an action RPG then a true Musou style game. You run around the game world, finding enemies to fight. Then once an encounter has been initiated with a single enemy, multiple groups of baddies show up to fight you. Its very fun to see how they combined the turn based style of the regular games into a very fun, if a bit chaotic at first, style of battle system. I was caught by surprise by how much I ended up liking the game. I would probably recommend people not familiar with Musou style games to start on easy to get a handle on how combat works at first. Diving head long into the combat system, thinking it'll be just like the previous game, wont work out very well for you.
Coming to the story, however, I was pretty disheartened by how little, it seems, the ending of the previous game mattered here. The characters hardly ever even reference the ending of the first game, which when there's a massive spoiler in the first few minutes of this game for the previous games ending, it would have been nice for them to reference it. You also dont get to carry over any major relationship decisions from the previous game and have no chance of trying to rekindle any relationship decisions here. That combined with the social links aspect being taken out of the game entirely, really put a damper on my enjoyment of this game. It really felt like nothing I did in the previous game mattered even in the slightest. Not just for my personal playthrough but also for the outcome of alot of things from the previous games plot. It also doesnt help that the story here is a fairly by-the-numbers anime trope filled plot that I was actually starting to get bored of by the end. The main plot felt extremely rushed. Each dungeon only got about 4-6 in game days to be fully explored by the plot and there were certain plot holes that were left unfilled because of the rushed schedule the game seems to be under.
At the end of the day, any reason I get to play more Persona and be invested in this world I'll take. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the battle system, but that was tampered by my severe lack of enjoyment of the story, mainly due to a lack of continuity between both games. I'd still recommend it for fans of the base Persona 5 game. Especially since this is supposed to be a direct sequel to that game. People looking for any references to Royal here will be disappointed.

I am reviewing this game as someone who has finished both prior P5 games

This game is quite flawed, but at the same time it is a perfect sequel to the original P5 in terms of its story and what this game is. Firstly I do not recommend this game to people who did not finish the original Persona 5 (Not Royal) or who are just looking for a new Musou Title that they can just dive into.

They advertise this game as a standalone experience and as it's own thing, but there are sooooo many references to the original story of P5, and the story beats are much more satisfying knowing the context behind the original.

Next I love the direction this game went, in terms of how to continue the story. A summer vacation traveling around Japan was the perfect choice to continue the Phantom thieves stories, and I though the summer events of P5 felt like they were rushed, so to see a lot of those summer events come into play, but more focused this time around, the experience is really cool. I will say I am a bit disappointed they don't go as all in as I would like though sometimes, because the game constantly cuts to black for scenes I would like to see animated.

In terms of gameplay, this game feels like a mix of Kingdom Hearts and your typical Musou Fair, but with the persona series' weakness and persona system. The game can take some real getting used to, but ultimately it isn't that deep. The combat itself is pretty low mind energy fun, but can get very repetitive due to the long length of this games Jails(Dungeons) , (Which the Jails themselves are really repetitive as well). Despite the repetition, I think the switch to hack and slash was cool, I just wished it were more polished, The lock on system is really Wonky, Bosses can feel very padded sometimes (especially Lock Keepers, They are honestly the most boring fights in the game), Also I like the vertical mobility in this game via climbing, jumping and double jumping,

And the Games Soundtrack? do you even need me to say it? It's freakin great! There are some songs that I would say are better than some of the OG P5's songs.(That Sendai and Sapporo town theme is 10/10).

If you played the original P5, a thing I am mixed on, is the way persona creation is handled. I miss the confidant system but for this game it makes a lotttt of sense why it isn't there. I actually like the mroe streamlined approach to fusing persona's and think it works with this game really well. I just miss those Arcana Boosts!!!

I definitely really enjoy this game and will see myself playing it again in succession with the first P5 when I play it through again.

Story=6 below average, saved by good voice acting. all the character development was done in pesona 5 this adds nothing. Characters do love to go on tangents and repeat themselves over and over, like someone tells you to go somewhere then everyone in the group needs to tell you that exact same thing like if you cant read or hear the other characters. Everyone needs to flap their gums about the slightest thing like a button in a dungeon In case you missed the radar pointing to it and the thick Glowing red outline strobe on the object. They almost never add anything to conversation but more text, This is what someone without friends would imagine conversations go cringe at best. This comes from someone that has played almost every released jrpg since the snes days so i am used to dialog

Combat=1 This has to be some of the worst action combat ever made in a game released in 2020 is beaten by games like Devil may cry/brave fencer mushashi released on the ps1 in 2001 and 100 more the last 20 years is embarrassing.

If you like this style of games go play Tokyo xandu instead..

Honestly, a lot better than I expected. On a critical level, I'd actually have to say that this is a pretty darn good game. Now before I get into my review, I wanna preface with a few thoughts.

There's some important things to know before getting into this game; that is, what the heck Persona 5 Strikers (or "Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers," as it is affectionately known in Japan, for some cursed reason) is. Technically, it's a sequel, in the most literal sense of the word. That is, a story that takes place in the universe of Persona 5, after the original's story and continues to develop similar themes and mechanics as the prior installment. But anyone who's familiar with the Persona release schedule knows that this is still, technically, a spin-off, meaning that it's a sequel in the same way that Persona 4 Dancing All Night is a sequel. But, fundamentally, it's still a spin-off. Now in terms of spin-offs, this is easily the best Persona's seen, in my opinion, and it comes strikingly close to replicating the feel and the gameplay loop of a mainline Persona entry, but it's still a spin-off (with a sequel story), so don't go in expecting a full-fledged Persona experience. To be honest, I think that this all goes without saying, but a lot of people seemed confused about just what this game is. Not to mention, some reviews on here seem to be critical of the game for not being as grandiose as Persona 5, when that was obviously never going to be the case, so I think this bears saying at least. Point is, this is Persona 5 Strikers, not Persona 5-2, so set your expectations in that regard.

Now about the game itself; like I said, I think it's great. Let's start with the main draw for most people: the real-time combat.
Real-time combat was a concept that was originally planned for P5, so to see it come to fruition here at the hands of Omega Force (with the aid of Atlus itself) is very interesting. And honestly, it works really, really well. If you're looking at Omega Force's involvement here and thinking "oh, cool, Persona Dynasty Warriors," then get that thought outta your mind. I can assure you that this is NOTHING like Omega Force's prior works. Rather, combat meets in a very fine halfway point between Dynasty Warriors and Persona 5, sometimes teetering in P5 territory even more so than DW. It's fast, it's frenzied, but there's still an air of strategy involved here. Honestly, think of it as a more hectic and slightly less-refined (though equally as fun) FFVIIR combat system. Between all the special attacks, switching between different characters with vast and varied movesets, there's honestly a ton of depth here. Add Joker into the mix and the combat can get really intricate.

Rather than discussing the story, I'm more inclined to talk about the writing in general; it feels like P5, so much so that my speculation is that many of the dialogue writers from P5 worked on this as well. And I think that's great; so many times throughout my playthrough, I would stop and go like "wow, this is actually so P5!" The character writing is on-point, the humor is on-point and the subtle attention to detail in character interactions is there as well. But with that said, P5S doesn't selectively inherit the quirks of P5's writing; in inherits all of it, including the bad. That includes characters repeating things that have long-since been established as fact ad nauseum, long tirades about friendship and the heart and occasionally grating platitudes. Even in terms of structure, you're getting the same formulaic game layout. But this also means that it has the same highs as P5's writing, with the aforementioned character writing, for example. Likewise, for every grating platitude, there's a genuinely compelling piece of moral sentiment to be found, so really, it's just more P5. To me, that's enough to call the writing a success, since it's what I'd want from a spin-off sequel, but if the writing of P5 bothered you, then just keep that in mind.

I'm cutting it close to the character limit, so I'm gonna try to wrap things up here; apologies if I'm leaving out something pertinent. I guess that last thing I wanna touch on is the music. I mean, it rocks for the most part. The overworld music is a blast to listen to and fits in perfectly with the P5 soundfont. The battle themes, OP and ED are easily some of my favorite P5 songs as well. But for some reason, the songs you'll end up listening to the most--the Jail themes--are surprisingly weak. I mean, I know that they went with a different direction for those than they did in P5; think more energetic and dynamic, like something you'd hear at a theme park. But that's not what bothers me, I don't mind that change. Just, as a whole, a good portion (note: not all) of those themes sound a bit flat, and don't mesh with the P5 style of music at all. Not bad, but just surprisingly weak

This game is fun, and provides a decent challenge. And all the familiar faces brings me right back to when I played the original Persona 5 for the first time. A Dynasty Warriors style Persona 5 is a cool concept, and I look forward to playing more of it.

However, it obviously doesn't hold as much charm as the original Persona 5, much less Persona 5 Royal (the far superior version).

El sistema de combate es una basura, por no hablar del motor grafico que hace aguas por todas partes con ese tremendo popping. En fin un producto mediocre que bajo mi punto de vista solo se aprovecha del hype de la serie y de los fanboys que tragan con todo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. well, to be frank, this game is a low budget spin off disguised as sequel which people over hyped way too much. Outside of watching the team feast and have yet another beach day, nothing truly exciting happens, and the monarchs are nothing to get the blood pumping like how I felt about some palace owners in P5. Some of the dialogue between the cast is fun, but I feel too sour over what could have been to really care. It looks much lower quality than P5 and Royal, which is a huge shame. And whilst some of the music remixes of the original P5 songs can be strong, most of the original Strikers music here falls flat. The story is forgettable and has left no impact or want to see more of it, though Sophia was fun she is all but written off in the end and I doubt she'll be relevant outside of DLC, which is upsetting after finishing Royal just a few weeks prior to playing this and loving its characters and story so much. Not to mention the roster is tiny, there is no DLC for more characters to appear either, some playable and persona using P5 characters don't even appear despite how brilliant they would have been, and no previous persona characters either, which is a let down for a game by KT. There is also no reason to NG+ this game, so after paying full price for a lesser-full, weak-feeling game which took a third of my time compared to the original, there is nothing about Strikers that fulfills the desires for the sequel I felt promised by the fans and company hype Expand

As far as a persona 5 game it has more content, so long as you ignore everything that happened in the previous games. For everyone else the story, lacking much resemblance from the original and only having the main characters in it with no relation to main character other than leader probably will seem like a cash grab. You'll still die quickly to minibosses if you fail to do so, especially on Hard difficulty. You'll still be baton passing to charge up a special attack. You'll still be acquiring Personas and fusing new ones. You'll still be stealing hearts and reforming twisted minds.

But you'll be doing all that with a much faster combat system that can seem quite hectic, until you get used to it. Holding down R1 pauses the battle and activates Futaba's Analysis skill, which shows you detailed information about every enemy, and you will be doing this a lot during the harder fights.

In fact, the plentiful boss battles feel like a fast-paced WoW raid. You'll be learning enemy attack patterns, dodging AoEs, healing and buffing your allies while debuffing your enemies. It's not just mindless button bashing.

The experience here is not as deep as Persona 5, but it's very decent nonetheless. I say this as someone who played both Persona 5 AND Royal from start to finish.

The villains are top notch as you’d expect and follow nearly the same formula as exploring a castle. I was worried the game wouldn’t strike me since it’s got the dynasty warriors vibe to it. I’m glad to say I love it though and seeing these characters back is a great way to start the year off! Even if you’re slightly skeptical about this game, I’d say try it. The music is well, godlike as I expected from a Persona 5 game, however the audio is sometimes a little bit weird, for example there are few times were you can't hear the characters very well, but it's not something that bothered me that much.

P5S made me feel at home from the get-go.
The game oozes style right from the starting menu until the credits roll, just like its predecessor. The soundtrack mostly reuses songs from the previous game and that would've been fine on its own, since that OST is perfect, but they made new songs that are just as amazing.
Graphics are also nice. Although the Persona series isn't a looker when it comes to graphics, it impressed me how smooth the game runs. It impressed me even more to imagine it running on the Switch. Mix that with how stylish the game is and you got yourself an unique aesthetic experience.
The cities you visit also contribute to, not only the look of the game, but to the pacing. Cities like Osaka and Okinaway actually feel real and compelling. Although they are mostly for show, the change of scenery is welcome. I wish I could say the same for the Jails, though. They're cool, especially the challenging bosses, but they can take quite a while to complete. And that makes it sort of repetitive, to an extente.

Another aspect from P5S that surprised me was the story and how long it is. I was definitely not expecting a story-heavy musou game. Especially one that took me 50 hours to complete. The writing and pacing sure wasn't as good as P5, but it was interesting, packing good moments and an emotional ending. It aslo blended naturally with the events of the "first" game. Zenkichi and Sophia were great additions to the team, and the villains were also pretty cool, adding weight to the tale.

Now, for the meat of the game: the combat! This is a musou-style crossover, after all.
I have to say that, at first, I was overwhelmed with the amount of things happening on the screen and the amount of things you had to pay attention to and quickly manage mid-battle. Honestly, it didn't feel like a proper musou game to me. It plays more like an action-RPG. A good one, but not exactly what I signed up for.
When you actually GET what the game demands of you and pull off crazy combos while exploiting weaknesses, it does become much better, but it just feels like something's missing. Everything is thrown at you, the screen gets crowded quickly, SP shouldn't be an issue but it is, the tutorial is jarring as hell, buffs and debuffs feel a little useless at times and the camera can go insane.
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad at all! It's just too intricate for this type of game.
I also feel like the game outstays its welcome a little bit. I blame that on the amount of useless shops around its beautiful towns and the completely dull and tiresome requests that you can take.
Oh, and if you're playing on hard, prepare to grind. Not a boring grind, but grind nonetheless...

Strikers is a good game! A good Persona game with a rather confounded musou-style approach that succeeds at times, but fails a lot too.
If you miss the Phantom Thieves, you'll be surprised when you pick this up.
But if you're here for another Samurai Warriors experience, I'd maybe look elsewhere.

I would describe it as mixture of Persona and Dynasty Warriors with more focus on Persona. You need to know or have played Persona 5 to understand many things as without the this you will only ask who, what and how? Remark: Persona 5 Royal did not happen here in this continuity. I like the gameplay, new characters and that the mixture works this well. However it gets more than a bitI would describe it as mixture of Persona and Dynasty Warriors with more focus on Persona. You need to know or have played Persona 5 to understand many things as without the this you will only ask who, what and how? Remark: Persona 5 Royal did not happen here in this continuity. I like the gameplay, new characters and that the mixture works this well. However it gets more than a bit repetitive towards the end, the antagonist after the first 2 are not set up equally well and it reaches not the heights of Persona 5 while being no failure. The story starts approx 6 months after the conclusion of Persona 5. Joker returns to Tokyo in the holidays to visit his friends to spend time with them. Little did they know that there is a series of events around Japan than resemble change of heart events and that they are already prime suspects by the police. Those are stargaze connected to a new app called EMMA. So it is time for the Phantom Thieves to reunify. Like I said if you did not know the story of Persona 5 you are already puzzling things together you cant know. The story is solid, enjoyable and works well enough for me. However I also say I cant defend well enough too against the argument that a lot is a copy of Persona 5 especially the final boss parts (Even the characters themselves mention this a bit in the end game). The characters are awesome and won me already over in Persona 5. I do not know if they could win me over if I did not have played it. The new characters work amazingly well. Sophia is my favorite and Zenkichi is equally good. Both are a strong asset to the team. For the supporting characters and antagonist I will praise Kuon Ichinose, Akane Hasegawa, Miyako Kaburagi and Alice Hiiragi. Again like in the other Persona games I like that you get more than simple good vs evil as the bad guys / girls have reasons for their behavior. Sadly like I said the later antagonists are a bit lesser characterized and feel more like filler compared to the first 2. Now to the gameplay. It is an action RPG and like Dynasty Warriors with focus on Persona. A lot is well transferred to this formula. You still have skills, bullets, can surprise enemies and use personas. The daily life parts and social links are removed along the time restriction. You can leave and reenter the Dungeons without advancing time. The battles are fast and the mechanics well thought out. When you select spells time stops and you can set the attack area up. Hitting weaknesses cause follow up and all out attacks. As you level up you get stronger and new skills. Additionally there are request some with good rewards, a cooking mechanic and an online shop for items (In world not DLC!). All in all this works well but after approx 25 hours became a bit repetitive. The story and characters kept me going until the end. Overall this is a nice mix and breath of fresh air. Might be not a 10/10 but worth my time. If you liked Persona 5 it is a good addition for your gaming library. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who has never played a single Persona game in her life, I have to admit that this game is incredibly fun. The melee based combat mixed with the usage of Personas is a perfect combination, especially as you progress through the game and get stronger Personas. The story is interesting and the Jails, although short—with exception of Shibuya’s and Osaka’s—are fun to play through.

The game holds your hand throughout its entirety: it tells you where to go and what to do. This isn’t a problem though. Shibuya’s large map felt maze like and took me three days to complete. However, Osaka’s map, as large as it might have been, was easy to navigate. The game’s atmosphere is simply astonishing. None of the game’s eight Jails felt remotely similar, and despite the story’s dark undertones, the Phantom Thieves’ lighthearted interactions juxtaposed perfectly with the dark storyline. Ryuji and Zenkichi’s juvenile attitudes bring a lot of comedic relief.

The Phantom Thieves compliment each other perfectly and are all fun to play as. I found myself, initially, relying on Joker for everything, however I changed party members depending on the Jail I was in. During the last two Jails, however, my party remained static: Joker, Sophia, Makoto, and Zenkichi. Joker due to his Personas always coming in clutch, Sophia for, some reason, always dealing massive damage with her Show Time attack. I could always count on Makoto for hard hitting Nuclear blows during the final Jails. And Zenkichi, well, I just always thought he was cool.

The game has it fair share of heartwarming moments. When Ryuji came to Sophia’s defense in Okinawa, proving to everyone that Sophia *is* the Phantom Thieves’ baby; when Akane and Zenkichi reunited; when Sophia decided to leave with Ichinose after everything she did to her. Not everything in this game is doom and gloom!

My biggest problem with this game is how heavy handed it is with its plot twists. From Sophia’s introduction in Shibuya, it’s obvious that she would have some type of involvement or relationship to EMMA. However I looked past it, and decided to focus on the story regardless of already knowing what might happen in the end game. Not to mention that this game is visually striking—even on the Switch—and the soundtrack is badass.

This game’s a must have for everyone who’s interested in this series but doesn’t know where to start. It’s fun, action packed, dialogue heavy, and just damn pretty to look at.

If you loved P5/R, this is a MUST get, just to get a reunion with your friends.
    Pros:
    - no one is off character, it's the same quality dialogue you are used to
    - great story, great new characters
    Con:
    - Combat can be chaotic, but in hindsight P5 combat was too simple so it's an upgrade
    - no dating

Here are a few strong aspects of the game and weaknesses:

    +
The story is quite good and the new characters are interesting
The game is fun and engaging
    The soundtrack is amazing

    _
Sometimes, graphics are ugly (aliasing problem on PS4)
Combat can be chaotic at times
The first boss is too hard

I think this game is great but you definitely need to play P5 or P5 royal before this one. In my opinion, it's not suited for newcomers.

Awesome experience overall. If you are a fan of the Persona franchise at all you should play this. A really solid story with some nice gameplay as well. One complaint I do have is that the audio mixing is really bad at times. The music is way to loud when the characters are talking and you can't turn it down. Besides that, it is a good game.

Persona 5 Strikers has set the bar very high for me in 2021 Video Games. This full fledged sequel to Persona 5 is essentially that, Persona 5-2. Not a fighting game with visual novel storytelling, not dancing with conversations, and certainly not chibi maze-crawling - This game is a direct sequel to Persona 5 taking place only a few months after the original game ends (and is not a Musou, for the record). In this game the Phantom Thieves reunite to do what they do best: Enter the metaverse, find the targets, and change their hearts. The tone for this game is no different than where we left off last time which really shows how closely Atlus and Koei worked together to make a new plot, new settings, and AMAZING new characters all come together to deliver an incredible story.

Gameplay wise, this game continues to be perfection. Koei Tecmo are masters of hack and slash combat, and playing as the Phantom Thieves in this style never felt better. Every character plays in the same ways they move while fighting in Persona 5, from weapon and attack movements all the way to animating their showtimes & all out attacks. Even the quotes they say (ex. Ann's "Now, I'm pissed!" when standing back up) have been perfectly preserved. You really feel like a switch was flipped from turn based to action, and the transition is complete perfection. This game even includes a Velvet Room, Shopping (which your money matters now more than ever), and a Request system that while different from the original in many ways still feels the same. And now they've adding cooking!

I can't express enough just how much of a pure JOY this game is. It's so wonderful to reunite with the Phantom Thieves for a new adventure, make delightful new friends that have become some of my favorite characters, and go on a fun trip with the same gang you know and love. There are so many moments that are laugh out loud funny and it's hard not to keep a smile on your face the entire time. The music has been wonderfully remixed, and yes, the band returns for some epic new tracks making the soundtrack additions to the franchise fantastic ones. Add on extra bosses, post game content, and more side quests than you know what to do with and before you know it you may spend just as long playing this game as the original Persona 5. I have nothing but praise to offer this game without a single demerit. If you loved Persona 5 then do not put this game on the back-burner. This is a wonderful continuation of the story we love providing excellent new characters who are just as deep and meaningful as the original cast. To me, this game is no less perfect than the original or Royal.

Just a hack and slash basically, just mash the same button over and over and skip huge walls of boring text, some of the skills and mechanics are okay but its only good if it draws you in.

It was a great adventure with awesome new characters that were able to fit right in the story, deepening bonds with the characters this game felt very natural comparing to the obligation of making bonds with people you didn't want to in Persona 5. The combat this time around wasn't JR-PG but rather Hack and Slash. It was very polished and intense despite some camera issues I found along the way. The bosses were creative but less challenging than some side-quest bosses which was a bit of a bummer because they had such cool designs. The music was a junction of the music you already loved from Persona 5 with some new music that made the game much more enjoyable. Overall Atlus nailed it once more and I can't wait to see what's next in the menu. Expand

Boy-o-boy initially it seemed to be a ridiculous decision since it seemed to ditch both the parties at the same time ( you can take your time to comprehend this statement), but it turned out to be an amazing game. This sudden Turning of an age old turn based mechanic into real time hack and slash, must have been one hell of a challenge for the devs, I bet, but God damn they nailed it. Not only it provides the privilege to seamlessly slash through your enemies using variety of combos, but also allows you to use persona powers in order to exploit weakness along with the good old follow up , all out attacks and baton pass which make the combat super flashy. It surely has a learning curve, and once you get hold of it, nothing seems more satisfying than this. They took the soundtrack to next level by introducing new funk jazz tracks off course but also by turning their classic tracks into heavy metal. But thats all about the good part. The problem with this game is the story, which is too simple and seems like a degraded reskin of that of it predecessor. Lowering the difficulty by introducing so many checkpoints, removing deadlines and giving you the ability to restore HP and SP by returning at almost anytime wasnt a good idea either. There are no companions, very fewer personas. There are no challenging areas once you beat the game, except for a few more optional bosses off course, but once you do all that, the game becomes highly stale, even in New Game+ unless you play it on Merciless difficulty, which is extremely hard.

With all that said, this game is still a must play, due to its unique and satisfactory combat and if you do its side missions, this game is a roller coaster ride at least for 50 hrs, and has the ability to satisfy both turn based and hack and slash lovers and thats why the uniqueness. Well done devs

Omega Force’s crossover between Persona and the Warriors series is a breath of fresh air for both franchises. It’s not a revelation by any means and not a great sequel to Persona 5 in terms of the story, but despite rather uninteresting content in between missions and the scantiness of additional activities, it’s a good, varied game that’s simply enjoyable. Regardless of the issues I had, Persona 5 Strikers is still a fantastic sequel, Persona game, and Musou game. It really is impressive the amount of content they jammed into this game, and the fact that they added way more to the mechanics than I thought they would was a great breath of fresh air. Musou fans will get a ton of enjoyment out of this title and fans of Persona 5 have their sequel that is most certainly worthy of the title.

Sadly, Persona 5 Strikers has some value only for the fans of original Persona 5. For others it will prove to be an odd mix of a dull visual novel with a pretty average musou game. [Issue#252, p.56]
