Initially, told that it is a Dark Souls clone but played it and can say it is a game on its own. Wow such difficult yet fun game. Love the incorporation of Japanese folk lore in the game along with some dashes of Japanese history. If you wanna learn about Japan, play this game. Or try making your character look like kenshin himura. A potential nominee for GOTY 2017

Games with combat as fast paced as this tend to be a bit messy if not a lot, but Nioh´s battle system is also extremely precise and slick. Add to that an infinite amount of options, weapons, abilities, stances, items, that blend together perfectly and relate wonderfully to enemies and level design, and you have videogame action nirvana.

The challenge it presents is also a very strong point. I´m honestly tired of games where it is almost impossible to get killed. Here you will die time after time, but if you play smart, focus and use al of your resources, you will get through every challenge you are presented with, and it will be most satisfying. That´s what videogames should be all about in the end.

Gameplay mechanics are the soul of this game, but other aspects such as graphics, sound effects or character design are also at a very high level. I have completed 5 missions of this game so far, and if this keeps up, it´s flawless.

I have played 250+ hours of this game and still want more.....I don't think there is a greater compliment than that.

Nioh is a fresh new mix of older titles, that brings many new things to the table, with an amazingly well done and polished combat system, a diablo-esque loot system, and enough things to keep you interested. Although the story isn't to die for, Nioh makes up for it with the fantastic game-play.

Nioh is a great game. It has great bosses, great enemies, interesting Japanese mythology, and some of the best combat system I've ever had the pleasure of using. WOW! I was pleasantly surprised with this game. At first, there's a sharp learning curve. I imagine this curve is much deeper and harder to turn with if you are more of a casual gamer. When I first started this game and I was going through the first region, I was deeply frustrated with the game and considered putting it down many times. I'm glad that I didn't. This game is a 9.5 in my books, so I rounded it up to a 10 considering it's my current GOTY.

People are constantly comparing this game to dark souls and Bloodborne. Honestly, it's nothing like the games From Software had to offer. The basic "health bar, magic bar, stamina bar" and premises to the combat system are where the similarities end. Some may argue these are big similarities. However, when only 10% of the games' traits could be considerable as alike in some way, form or fashion, I would venture to say that other 90% makes the two types very much apart from one another. There are a list of ways why they are different, but it's a good thing that they are. This game is in the same genre, sure, but there are a number of distinctions that set it apart from games made by From Software. Nioh is amazing. It has gameplay that is very unique and a combat system that leaves one begging for more once they've got the hang of it.

I think people are praising this game too much. I think it's because they are sick of Dark Souls. Although Ashes of Ariandel was pretty lame, the Souls series is as strong as ever. Although Ashes of Ariandel was pretty lame, the Souls series is as strong as ever. Nioh is great fun, but that's all it is, great fun. This is not a deep technical game with a learning curve on combat. The learning curve is on figuring out how to work out the menus and customization of items and gear. This is no Dark Souls, and certainly no Ninja Gaiden either. It might look like it and at times play like it, but its similarities are only skin deep. I am still playing it after beating the last boss on a total of 75 hours. Did I get my moneys worth? Absolutely! Would I recommend it to everyone? Yes to that as well. I did this entire game without Playstation Plus, so no summons for help. I am not sure if you can summon NPCs like you can in Dark Souls. If there is, I never bothered to try. The retards claiming that this game is a masterpiece are players of average level, and people of limited understanding.

This is a fine game however, it has a great loot system and a really fun magic system. The weapons and armor pieces are great too. Other nice things that can be said about Nioh is that it has great characters, real Japanese men, and not just because they were real people, but because they were red pilled men, not the emasculated weak men of today. I am still playing it at the moment. I am doing the hard missions that are unlocked once you beat the final boss. But I cannot help the feeling of disappointment that I have been getting lately.

This game game is too easy. Unless you are an average player, you really should not think of Nioh as a challenging game. This has nothing to do with having played Dark Souls or any other game. I wish people stopped regurgitating the same crap about how playing Dark Souls is what makes Nioh seem easier to the very few who claim it is. I have a total of 700 hours on Dark Souls 1-3. When I went through the third one, I was more than familiar with the playing system, but I never found myself cheesing through mobs, or defeating bosses in first attempts with absolutely no summons at all. Nioh's main problem with difficulty comes with the mobs, aside from the Tengu enemy, everything else is a complete joke. A punching bag for you to stab or run circles around on. The mobs are small too, they really should not even be called mobs. It's extremely rare to fight more than 2 enemies at once. Once in a while you can fight 3 enemies at once. And Once in a blue moon you fight more than that. Their movements are telegraphed from a mile away too. From the first hour to the last you are going to be fighting the same damn red ogres over and over and over and over again. Will they do different attacks? Maybe one or two, but mostly they just have a bigger health pool and do more damage. You will fight lots and lots of skull samurai......They swing their blade twice and ask you to kill them after they miss their swings 99 times out of 100. I beat about 6-10 bosses on my first attempt. I am not gloating here, this is not a game to gloat over about. This game is not Ninja Gaiden hard.

This is a really fun game that I am enjoying, but putting it on Dark Souls ground is a bald faced lie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best surprises of the last few years. When I started Nioh I had that same feeling I had when I impulse bought Demon's Souls. "How could they only have two copies of this game on launch day?! This is amazing." It truly is amazing. I've poured about 100 hours into it so far and beaten NG+ (Way of the Strong).

It's the best mix of Ninja Giaden, SoulsBorne gameplay, and Diablo's loot system (I swear I thought of this before I read an official review say the same thing). Combat is fast, tactical, and fun. It can get a bit repetitive, but enemies have enough of a variety of different moves that it's not the same move every time.

Even with Onmyo Magic making things easier in the NG+, I still find myself messing up a combo or misreading an enemy's combo and find myself dead. The multiplayer mechanic, as it is now, is unique. I'm looking forward to when full PvP is implemented. This is truly a return to form for Team Ninja. My only gripe is that the story is a bit convoluted and became an afterthought in the middle. I picked up caring about it toward the end when I actually understood what was going on. On the same note, bosses were a bit hit or miss. Some were just too easy to figure out the first time you fought them.

I am a fan of the Soulsborne series and have played all of them. It's easy to say that Nioh IS another Dark Souls game, however, it is NOT a Dark Souls clone. Nioh is unique on its own with the combat system, theme, looting, etc, but it is also HARD. I definitely enjoyed the game very much and would recommend it over Dark Souls 3, but Bloodborne is still the better game.

GAMEPLAY: It's the Strongest Point of the Game. It's Challenging, Unforgiven, Methodical, but the most important, it's FAIR. It did the Souls Games homework! The KI-Pulse system (fast stamina regeneration) is annoying at beginning, but after you learn to use it, the game clicks and becomes very enjoyable! The variety of Weapons and Armours together with Armour and Weapon Forging, Fusing and Visual Changing is a fresh addition to the Souls Formula. 10/10

GRAPHIC: Not the best looking game ever, but there are beautiful places with mix of Fields, Castles, Caves in Night, Day, Rain conditions is very pleasant. The level design is carefully crafted. Also, you can choose between Better Graphics, Better FPS or Mix of both. For a fast game like this which precision is necessary, it's really a welcome feature. Any game could have this option. 9/10

MUSIC AND SOUND: Very nice mix of Japanese Old and New Style musics. It could have more variations and sometimes it becomes repetitive, but nothing that bothers while you're playing. The sound effect is also good, and the concept of using Japanese actors/actress for Japanese voice is perfect. 9/10

CONCLUSION: A must have for any Souls Games Fan or People who likes challenges. 9/10

It's criminal and a disservice to say it's just a clone of that certain game, because it isn't.

If you've played hack and slash classics such as Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden, Nioh is right up at your alley and more. And more, I say, because every facet of Nioh teems with personality, that, overwhelming as a whole at first, will grab you by the hands and command you to keep playing.

Outside gameplay, Nioh gives you the option to choose between enjoying the game with a steady frame rate and looking at improved visuals--which may enhance your gaming experience depending on your preference. Although these options send a confusing message (because console games don't really give such options until this generation), they are more than welcome in Nioh and other games moving forward.

The only flaw I can think of and that I can pin on Nioh, and this being a personal one, would be the challenging (Japanese) given names that you need to memorize in order to have a fuller grasp of the main narrative. I have nothing against the Japanese culture; in fact, I love their culture--though I am not a (weeabo?)--but the number of characters at play is quite many, that as you go further into the game, you'd find yourself either looking into the character dossier to keep up with the story, or completely ignore who's who and enjoy whatever amount of narrative morsels you have of Nioh.

Overall, Nioh is a solid game deserving of the 9s and 10s critics gave it. The post-release content it will receive (PVP is among them) will only add to the already sumptuous experience that is Nioh. Get it now!

Fans of Bloodborne and other From Software games will likely enjoy Nioh as it has a great deal in common with the formula of these games. It however, also does many things differently.

Nioh features talent trees focused on 5 weapon types, ninjutsu, and onmyo magic which skill points can be allocated to based on stats and weapon usage. This means that you can specialize in specific weapon types and cater your build towards your playstyle. I personally focused on strength and played the game using Axes to smash my enemies.

Another major difference from From games is in the loot system. Nioh has a Diablo-esque loot system where weapons and gear drop from enemies with random bonuses and rarity levels. These items can be upgraded and the bonuses rerolled at the Blacksmith to help reduce RNG. However, the cost of doing this and frequency of gear drops means its almost always better to just wait for better drops. I enjoyed this system but many others hate the bulk of useless items you get.

The biggest difference and strength of Nioh is the combat. Combat is fluid and skill based with dodging, ki management through timed ki pulses, and blocking. The better you get at the game the more the difficulty plummets as you take advantage of many game breaking abilities. Magic in particular has an ability Sloth that slows down enemy movement and attacks including bosses. This often trivializes some encounters, but it is your choice to use such abilities.

The story of Nioh is about William Adams, an Irish pirate who goes to Japan to retrieve his stolen spirit guardian. He gets caught up in the machinations of Tokugawa Ieyasu and ehlps unify Japan through historical events such as the battle of Sekigahara. The game has many historically accurate events and characters with some creative license taken as the game contains demons and undead monsters. Overall, the story was interesting but easily ignorable and confusing for those unfamiliar with Japanese history.

The biggest negative factor of Nioh is the enemy variety and level design. By the third of 6 regions in the game you have fought basically every new enemy you will encounter. Levels are filled with the same enemy Yokai and zombies and it will often get boring doing levels. The bosses however are really good and for the most part unique. Boss fights are where the game truly shines. Levels often feel samey as many feature typical Japanese village settings and mountain caves. Some areas like the Ninja mansion are visually interesting however.

In conclusion, Nioh is a fast paced and fluid game from Team Ninja that is a definite must for those who enjoy games such as Bloodborne or who are interested in Japanese history and mythology. The game features a gameplay mode that locks the frame rate at 60 fps at the cost of resolution and this helps the game maintain its fast paced and fluid combat. PVP is being added in April and there are 3 planned DLC story packs that will hopefully add much more enemy variety.

The atmosphere is intense, encouraging exploration, the enemies are intelligent and original creations.
This brings me to the bosses where, in my opinion, might be it's greatest asset and at the same time an incredibly diverse set of creatures. From Fiends to Humanoids to Demons to Water Blobs, Nioh has them all and each one of them is different, each one of them demands a completely different set of armor and weapon stance to fully be in control of said battle.

Worth the buy for sure, I have spent dozens of hours exploring and progressing through the main quest and I am still not half way there.

It might be the next generation of Action RPG now that Dark Souls is coming to an epic conclusion of its Saga.

The strongest point of the game is the combat, quick, satisfying and with lots of varieties, the fact that how the player learns alongside the character, fighting and learning new techniques that gives more posibilities when fighting gives a well constructed progression curve.

The story is quite interesting, if you like this period you will understand it even better, an outsider in a strange land and his quest to recover his guardian spirit, meeting renown warriors with their own reasons to fight.

Also the looting sistem has a big importance, having sets with unique perks that fit with diferent builds.

Nioh has been a truly surprise, that has even surpass my expectations from the previous Alpha and Beta.

The game has enough content to spend about 45-50 hours to finish, not including the NG+ features. We have to wait to see what´s more with Nioh, adding new free content like PVP and Boss Rush stages, plus the Season Pass with 3 DLCs

Don't get me wrong: Nioh is a pretty decent game with its own twist. The combat system is fluid and versatile. However there are some aspects, which pull it down to mediocrity compared to such pieces of art like Bloodborne and Dark Souls games (in particular first and third installments).

    1. No character customization - you play Geralt eh William for the whole time. For instance Dark Souls and Bloodborne offer more flexibility at this point.

    2. Level design. Well, I admit with the feudal Japan setting it's kinda impossible to create such an epic environment like it From Software does, but seriously: must 80% of levels look almost the same?

    3. Enemies. In each mission you fight literally the same enemy types over and over again. Only few things distinguish them from each other: HP amount and color/armor. And this after 10 years of development. Are you serious, Team Ninja?

    4. Bosses. They are strong and they are many, but they are nothing special compared to the creatures created by Miyazaki and Co. There is no emotions (like BB fight against German or DS3 fight against the Twin Princes) in this hack and slash frenzy, which are Nioh bossfights basically are. Above all they are also bugged as hell.

    5. The story. Nioh's story is flat like a wiener schnitzel without any lore.

    6. The weapons. The weapon variety is pretty poor: all you get are katanas, double katanas, axes, hammers, kusarigamas und three fire weapons, which have neither a unique design nor a unique moveset. Another point for Bloodborne and DS. Okay okay, you can unlock many additional weapon skills and Switch between the stances - but honestly how often do you switch between the stances and how do you manage to use every skill you unlock?

    7. Atmosphere. Not nearly as dense as in the Souls games.

    8. Grinding. As weapon scaling is almost absent you have to grind to level up and collect stronger weapons/armor to progress. Actually not a flaw but gets pretty boring as time goes by.

    9. Loot. To much of it and paired with sucky inventory system almost annoying.

    10. Multiplayer. It just plain sucks. I mean if you try to summon a cooperator you have to wait forever and ever and ever. Even in Bloodborne it worked much better. Also the way you can play with friends is nothing but embarassing and makes no sense. And I also miss the invaders.

Disclaimer: My review is actually an answer to the fanboys putting Nioh above everything FromSoftware has ever created.

Based off of all the raving reviews, it's hard to believe that the critics and I were playing the same game. As for the user reviews, I think many people only played it for an hour or two before leaving a review--it does make a great first impression. The problem is, the magic wears off quickly.

At first, the combat is a lot of fun and seems much deeper than it actually is. People are making a big deal about the stance system, but you'll quickly realize that it doesn't really add that much to the game, and you'll probably find yourself using only one, maybe two, stances most of the time.

The biggest problem is that the game uses the same handful of enemies over and over....and over and over. It might switch out their weapon, or give them a special ability here and there, but that doesn't cure the tedium. Whatever challenge the game initially poses fades away pretty quickly--when you've already fought each enemy type 30-100 times when you've only reached the second region of the game, there just isn't a whole lot of incentive to keep playing. To make it worse, the environments are extremely dull and the level design is boring. Have fun with the side missions, by the way--they're mostly just recycled portions of the main mission levels, or recycled levels from prior side missions.

Another reason the game gets dull is because there are only 6 (I might be forgetting one) different weapons to use. Sure, they come with endless variations of stat modifiers, but those don't affect the way the weapon is actually used. Compare that with the Souls games, where you'll have way more weapons than you can even try out, many of which have unique movesets--Nioh is definitely lacking in comparison.

When I realized how bored I was about 10 hours into the game, I quit playing, went out and repurchased Dark Souls 3. I haven't been able to put it down since, despite having done multiple playthroughs before. If you're a Dark Souls fan expecting to get more of that type of experience with Nioh, well, lower your expectations..or better yet, just don't waste your money.

The variety of weapons (including ranged attack options), crafting, magic-like abilities, and ability to mix blocking with dodging more resembles the Souls series.

For the negatives, I have three: (1) The story and lore seems like an afterthought. I'm about halfway through the game and I can't really figure out what is going on or how it connects to any of the missions or locations in the game. Given the Soulsborne influence, I would expect to uncover lore as the game progresses, but I am struggling to make any sense of it. (2) The various areas of the game are also not at all connected to one another. At the end of each mission you return to a starting point map where you can select your next mission. Mechanically it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it really segments the game and makes you feel like you're not immersed in a world at all. (3) The amount of loot and crafting is a bit obnoxious in my opinion. Personally, I prefer the limited number of weapons and gear from Bloodborne, but I respect the Souls approach where different types of gear suit different playing styles. I don't want to spend a big chunk of my time, effort, and resources on trying to craft a niche weapon or piece of armor, I just want to play the game. For some people, the ocean of loot and crafting options may be attractive, but for me it just takes away from the game itself.

Overall, I really like this game. But in my mind, Bloodborne is a perfect 10 and a masterpiece, and the Souls games are close behind. I would put Nioh on the same playing field thanks to great mechanics and gameplay, but it doesn't achieve the same level of cohesiveness and entertainment. I give it an 8/10 accordingly, although it is a very impressive game and one that is sure to be one of the best of 2017.

Nioh is an outstanding achievement in action RPGs. Many people say that it's exactly like Souls, but I don't see it. The inspiration is there, but what has been created is one of the most original games I've played this console generation. The art style doesn't look as good as other games nowadays, or even the Souls games, but it works well with the game. The level design isn't as good as it is in the Souls games, but it's till better than most other recent games. The soundtrack isn't anything to call amazing, but it still fits. The weapon variety is weak, with only 5 different types of weapons, but at least each of them are unique and have completely different functions from the others. So what makes this game a 9/10? Well, first off, its combat. Nioh has one of the best combat systems I've ever seen in a video game. Its combat is based on stance, and given that For Honor, which has similar combat, was released a mere week after it, it didn't really get the recognition it truly deserved. You have high, low, and mid stances, and all weapons you use force you to change your stance in order to get the most effective use out of it. Some enemies, including bosses, require you to change your stance, no matter what weapon you're using. Nioh doesn't exactly shine in its enemy variety, as a lot of the levels feature the same basic smokey skeletons or samurai as most of the foes you face. They all have great design that goes hand-in-hand with the setting, but it gets tiring seeing the same people some times. The bosses, however, define the game's challenge and creativity. Each boss is different from the last, and I never felt like I fought the same guy (or girl) twice. They all have different attack patterns, some easier to memorise than others, which make them all feel unique. Now some may ask: how the customisation? Well, compared to the Soulsborne games, character customisation is literally nonexistent. You can't alter your character's appearance at all, but considering that this game focuses more on straightforward story rather than lore, I could see why. But if you prefer clothing customisation, you're in for a treat. There are so many different types of armour, and each of them have different looks and styles than the others. If you don't like the look of one, but want to keep the stats, you can take it to the Blacksmith, and have her refashion it to look like a different piece of armour that you've discovered. You can do this with weapons, too, and it's something I've always dreamed of seeing in a video game. Overall, Nioh has it's flaws, but they are very quickly overshadowed by it's achievements. The fluid combat and movement systems combined make some incredible, fast-paced gameplay, the enemy designs, while repetitive at times, still stands out thanks to the unique bosses, and it's customisation for weapons and armour separates itself from most other games on the market. But there's still one question: is it hard? I'm glad to say, yes. It's brutal, but that's why we love it. 9/10. Expand

Does Nioh hold up against the juggernauts that From Software has created, where other games like Lords of the Fallen stumbled? It does, mostly. While there are some areas of the game that leave much to be desired, Nioh is a fun package and definitely worth a playthrough.

Where Nioh shines the most is in its combat. Slower than the frantic pace that Bloodborne sets, but faster than the more strategy-driven Dark Souls, it settles into a good mix between the two games. Hits look and feel satisfying, but it's letdown somewhat by a few enemies having incredible poise. Not a deal breaker, but enough to be frustrating. Along with that, there isn't much variety in enemy types. After a few missions, the game has pretty much shown its hand with all of the enemies its prepared to offer.

Nioh's environments deserve much less praise. I understand that the developers were tied to a certain time period, but they already took liberties with the historical accuracy with characters and actually fighting demons, so why not exercise the same liberty with the level design? Be prepared for lots of caves, forests, and small villages. Nioh comes alive when it does pull away from those samey levels. Like the poise of enemies, not a deal breaker, but a slight disappointment.

Nioh's missions are chosen using a map-based selector. So instead of just wandering forward once you clear an area, at the end of each mission you're taken back to the map screen and you may proceed. This comes with the issue of making the areas feel disconnected, and I would say that's Nioh's biggest flaw. You get tossed around from area-to-area, and it just feels off.

It's a fun game overall, and definitely one that deserves to be played. It's my opinion that Nioh isn't as good as Dark Souls, but that shouldn't stop anyone who's interested in a game filled with some meaty challenge and fun gameplay.

It's just... almost everywhere else where Nioh fails to live up to its possibility. The graphics are PS3+. The level designs are repetitive. The encounters are repetitive because the bestiary is repetitive. Almost every single level offers up the exact same encounters - this manages to slowly deplete the enjoyment level after a few dozen hours. The story arc is convoluted and non-affecting - it tries to tell a quasi-historical tale which ends up feeling mostly random and disconnected.

And yet I keep coming back. Because the combat is essentially "that good". And the progression system is enjoyable, adding further dimensionality to an already multidimensional combat system.

So essentially. Do i recommend Nioh? Yes. Because of its combat. Do i feel Nioh deserves all this potential "game of the year" praise - it could've, but, it fell short imo.

I thought it would be a hard sell because of the limited weapon selection and all the armor is Japanese lore/samurai inspired and that's not really my thing. However Nioh proved that even without a graphics style/setting that resonates with me, a game can be enjoyable just through the expression of how it is played.

Nioh is so much fun to play, the game is full of huge combo trees you can unlock for weapons, tons of guardian spirits to collect which give different bonuses. There is high, middle, and low stance for every weapon which produces a different move-set and combat style affecting how your character moves significantly. Switching stances on the fly and reacting perfectly to whatever you are fighting is incredibly satisfying, and although it is not expressly necessary, it lets you play with as much or as little complexity as you feel like.

Despite the fact that Japanese lore and samurai armor don't stand out to me at all, Nioh has managed to make it stand out through brilliant combat mechanics, high impact effects and animations and a uniquely told story. On top of it all I love the soundtrack, the first time I heard the boss music in the Warrior of the West's fight was intense.

Slicing up a horned demon into 20 pieces couldn't be more satisfying. If you have a ps4 and like action focused games you would be absolutely stupid not to pick this up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The worst purchase this year, boring hack and slash gameplay, uninspired story and terrible frame rate and resolution, its like they threw the game together last minute

Anyway, buy the game if you are into stuff like souls games, blood-borne, or simply love to have a huge variety in weapon and armor choices. Expand

I can't recommend this game on good conscience to anyone. The game has amazing music, looks amazing, runs quite well and really comes together very well in all areas except combat. The dodge mechanic feels unresponsive and delayed and the attack physics are flawed at best. The dodge mechanic feels unresponsive and delayed and the attack physics are flawed at best. An enemy can hit you when you're a good foot or two out of his swing range and when you're trying to sell a game that is based around combat, that is just unacceptable. Usually I'd give a game a 7 out of 10 when it has done this many things right, but since the core gameplay is combat and that is what I find unplayable I have to give it a 6.

As far as difficulty is concerned, is really isn't that hard if you stick to a greatsword and longbow and use the old "Block until they run out of stamina" tactic, but that just isn't all that fun and when you come up against some of the larger enemies that can literally one hit KO you (or one combo KO, same thing if you aren't able to move during the combo) these tactics just don't work. At that point it is all about trial and error and learning the monster's attack pattern. Dashing in for an attack then running out. This becomes very tedious very quickly. Even in the early game, spending a minute on a simple monster only for it to catch you with one attack and kill you just feels like a waste of time and progression. It doesn't have the same Dark Souls feeling where, if you die, sure you feel frustrated, but in the back of your mind you always felt like it was your fault. Nioh fails to capture that and I found myself often blaming game elements for my failures which is unlike me. Even the most frustrating Dark Souls boss inspired me to improve whereas Nioh's simplest enemies make me feel like I should just skip them.

TL;DR: A game that is amazing in all way except where it counts.

I can't believe myself when I'm saying this but I was skeptical before the game launched and said to myself that this game could not be like Dark Souls but I was wrong.

This game is the best Souls game up to date it's like mixing bloodborne and dynasty warrior to gather and this game was the result
it's fast and beautiful and has better story tiling then Dark Souls.

Team Ninja made a Excellent job with Nioh, a RPG game, with Japanese story line, awesome monsters, bosses, characters, spirit guardians. I will start off and say Nioh is not for everybody. Nioh is a challenging, FUN, and at times frustrating experience. On both systems you can choose between better graphics, better frame rates, or a combination of both. My recommendation is to use the Action Mode for better frames rates and performance. Level design and enemies can be repetitive at times, but the boss encounters make up for that. The sound quality of the game is great as I have no complaints about any of the music, voice acting, weapon sounds, ambiance, and enemy sounds. One issue I have with the game is the amount of systems it uses for inventory and for using the blacksmith. The menus are cluttered with information, it feels like you have hundreds of items in your inventory. You get the hang of it after a while but it can cause confusion for some players. The other issue is story, it just did not keep my attention. I wanted to hurry up and get back to the fighting and skip most of the cut scenes. Nioh has elements of the Ninja Gaiden series, with elements of Dark Souls but it also leans heavily on Onimusha. At the end of the day you are a fan of those types of games and enjoy challenges then Nioh is a must buy. Expand

To call this game a "Soulsborne copy" is an insult to Nioh, while it does take some elements from Soulsborne games they aren't alike. The combat is an absolute thrill and requires a lot of attention and management, the skill ceiling is VERY high and even higher than Soulsborne games!

While the quality of the game is definitely on the high end and standing on its own away from "similar" games of the genre, it's the story that brings down what could have been a 9/10 game. Without a good story, it feels like you're doing whatever the game's offering for no real reason. Basically the game becomes a chore after a while with nothing to look forward to except the usual progression.

The small, scattered levels live in the shadows of the Souls/Bloodborne worlds. Otherwise, Nioh matches - and occasionally surpasses - FromSoftware's genre giants. [Apr 2017, p.77]

After a series of letdowns Team Ninja returns to form it displayed with Ninja Gaiden Black. Nioh is a variation on the Souls series, and although it is not as intriguing story wise, its gameplay is much more enjoyable. [04/2017, p.46]
