I started playing it step by step; played every stage 100% and build my skills properly and gradually. I became so good at it, that i was able to enjoy its story and game-play. Nioh is now one of my all-time favorite games of all time. The game is totally re-playable; NG+, and +, and +, rewards different items, and adds enemies to the combat - thus changing the combat strategy from the first time the game is played.

I also learned that I don’t like this Genre because it’s just not for me. There is a steep learning curve that I just wasn’t willing to put the time in. For two major reasons, one I don’t like Stamina meters. It’s not really where I want to mash buttons but I prefer to block and be patient but the game punishes you for blocking or dashing or attacking by lowering your stamina for everything. To me, the game felt less like playing a game for fun and more meter management.

From what it seems, its a very well received game but its just not for me. I’m glad that I’m trying all of these games and learning what I like and don’t like. This is an RPG but its a very specific RPG that just doesn’t fit the way that I play games.

A bad attempt at DS/BB theme. It resort to the cheapest DS2 tactics and ends up being just unfair instead of hard most of the times. Too bad, would have loved a good game like that with old japan theme.

Nioh was definitely a surprise.. It's not just another Dark Souls rip, it has it's own identity. With perfected combat mechanics and a loot system akin to Diablo, the game is just pure addictive fun. Runs at 60fps at pretty much all times on a standard Ps4 with beautiful graphics too. It's a very difficult game though and will probably turn off a lot of casual gamers from the get-go.

It's a cheap Dark Souls rip off. It tries too hard to be hard (pun intended), but it just ends up being totally unbalanced and badly designed. Wish I could get my money back... GET BLOODBORNE DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!

Not being a huge fan of the Darksouls/Bloodborne games I went into Nioh hoping for a more story-driven game with side quests, one which I had heard was a lot easier to follow.

Having finished the game and being on my journey to platinum, Nioh was definitely an experience. I really enjoyed the Japanese art style and of course the characters and traveling around various Japanese maps.

Having finished the game and being on my journey to platinum, Nioh was definitely an experience.

I really enjoyed the Japanese art style and of course the characters and traveling around various Japanese maps. I loved the guardian spirits and the design. The Yokai were very creepy and definitely expertly designed. I enjoyed going through the story and meeting the various bosses, new Yokai and new areas. The game gave a great variety of missions, side missions and maps. The voice acting was on point and the soundtrack was very good (would have liked to have seen some more tracks though, as it seemed there weren't many and they cycled through the same ones often).

I loved the Kodama. They were super cute and gave the game a nice little mascot figure. The hot springs were also a nice addition and added to the Japanese feel and setting of the game.

There was a nice variety of extra things you could do - co-op play, side missions, collectibles, twilight missions, glory etc

I didn't however enjoy how bland the colours were and how similar some of the environments were. Most of the game was extremely dark (and actually quite hard to navigate due to not being able to see).

Of course this goes without saying, and I was expecting this, but I did feel Nioh was unrealistically hard in places. The difficulty spikes sometimes spiked far too much and there was a huge jump between expectations for one mission, and expectations for the next one.

I mentioned before, I got into Nioh due to knowing it had a story... the story however was disappointing and confusing. Both myself and my partner lost what was going on a few hours in and had no clue what the story/characters were on about. I felt the story could have been much better if it was easier to follow and was made to be more interesting. From what I saw, it was pretty boring and tedious.

All in all, a pretty solid game with quite a bit of room for improvements. If they do a sequel to Nioh, it would be nice to see a more interesting and more enjoyable story with a range of colorful environments and range of atmospheres.

    Pros:

    Looked great and played well
Fantastic design of Yokai and enemies
Lovely Japanese art style and cutscenes
A very real Japanese feel and setting
A range of traditional Japanese weapons to use and choose from
    Voice acting was exceptional
Platinum trophy is not too difficult, requires quite a bit of skill and perseverance for grinding

    Cons:
    Confusing/uninteresting story
    Irritating difficulty spikes
Can get overwhelming during end game/post game having to use huge amounts of variety in weapons including the Onmyo magic
The blacksmith menu can be quite confusing

Repetitive enemies made the game at the very end feel like chore. Looting system is good but I would prefer less complex upgraded system. Some spells are overpowered, like Sloth for exp, the devs know but still keep it that way. this disappointed me. Awesome COOP system, although you can't invade others like other soul games. Lacks of blood spill.

Overall, Nioh is exceptional in Combat mechanic, but suffers from bland story and repetitive enemies. Even every weapon has their own skill, with same enemies that you already killed hundred times, this does not cover. 8/10 is solid score. I will wait for Nioh 2

I finished this yesterday. It was a good game overall but ultimately quite disappointing. I'm a long time fan of both ninja gaiden and the souls series. I'll start with the cons

    -Cons

    1. Lack of variety in level design. The levels are dull and visually unimpressive. I can't recall a single moment I was impressed by this. It's not terrible but quite repetitive.
    2. Story. By the end I didn't feel connected to any of the characters or events. There is little character development and little reason to care about events.
    3. Difficulty. This may be a plus for some but in this game I really dislike it. It's not tough but fair, it's mostly just tough. The main reason being that although I have a small armory of weapons at my disposal none of them seem to do much damage, particularly against bosses. This makes fights feel long and drawn out. Getting to the end felt like too much of a slog.
    4. Weapons & Armor. There's way too much of this. I can't sort through all of this crap. It takes forever to figure out what's good. Also the weapons and armor lack any interesting qualities or backstory. I don't have the sense that 'this is the weapon for me'. I just feel like the attack rating is slightly higher.
    5. Too much rpg, not enough action. Unlike souls the focus isn't on your skill, it's often on your level and attributes. It's important to take time to train and level up. Unfortunately leveling up is a slow process, i was supposed to reach level 145 to tackle the final boss... instead I just farmed for high level gear... the lack of open world design means that in order to level up I'm stuck small levels killing the same enemies over and over again before running to a shrine. It's dull and if I die in the process it's very frustrating, mostly because i'll have to repeat this process over again.
    6. Lack of open world. I understand this was a design choice but it prohibits the development of a connection with the game and removes any desire to explore.
    7. Bosses. The bosses lack any real character. They're annoying to fight but ultimately forgettable because the art design is uninspired and there's no real buildup to most of these encounters.
    8. Enemies. The same enemies are reused throughout the entire game, they just have more hp in later levels. There are a few variations introduced later on but not nearly enough for such a long game.

    Pros+

    1. Revenant system. Fighting the computer controlled versions of dead players is a fun idea.
    2. The combat system. There is a lot of depth when you factor in ki powers, weapon stances and weapon types.

Overall this game just isn't that much fun and I couldn't recommend it. It's simply too repetitive and lacking in memorable moments. Pick up dark souls 2 or 3 or bloodborne on ps4 instead. They are better in every conceivable way.

Gaiden is infamous for its ridiculously inhumane difficulty and plentiful QTE’s that gamers still mock. Team Ninja also single-handedly killed the Metroid franchise with Metroid: Other M. Ninja’s portrayal of Samus Aran rightfully offended fans who refused to reinterpret a traditionally badass heroine as a bratty misfit with PTSD and daddy issues. Aran’s unfathomable demise still lingers over Nintendo. With Nioh, Team Ninja blatantly copies the Dark Souls franchise. Instead of offering a fresh reimagining, Nioh combines the worst of Dark Souls with the worst of Ninja Gaiden. It proves that Team Ninja hasn’t learned squat.

Graphically, Nioh is passable. It offers several visual modes, but choosing anything over performance is a mistake. For minor visual gains, the framerate is cut in half in movie mode. In comparison to God of War and Monster Hunter World, Nioh looks terrible.

The story is bad as well. Silly and forgettable. White guy becomes samurai overnight and must save the Japanese or something. Sound familiar?

Nioh happens in feudal Japan, but set pieces are uninteresting and small. Players cannot freely roam. They choose one mission at a time and can’t progress until the current mission is over. Once they complete missions, players choose the another from a world map. No seamless exploration. Players can complete side missions as well, but those recycle areas from previously completed missions. There’s an utter lack of imagination in Nioh’s world design. Once a mission goal is completed, that’s it. Enemies will either disappear or bow in defeat, and summonable enemies vanish. It’s one of many missteps.

Except for a few tweaks, the leveling and stat system was blatantly ripped from Souls. Same goes with magic and ability slots. Combat mimics Souls as well, except players can upgrade abilities and combos. However, trash enemy design and ruthless, unforgiving bosses negate any positive changes to combat. Player levels don’t matter for most of the game because ALL bosses kill in 1-2 hits. Whereas Souls punishes players for making consistent mistakes, Nioh punishes gamers merely for playing. Single mistakes result in death. Just like Ninja Gaiden, boss fights emphasis superhuman reflexes and exact timing that leave absolutely no room for error. You missed a single dodge? Death. You turned a hair too far left on a block? Death. You swung with a mid-stance attack instead of a light? Death.

All bosses have massive health pools and spam infinite combos. Even if players learn attack patterns, they aren’t rewarded for their patience. Players can spend 10+ minutes cautiously whittling down a boss’ health. Oops, they didn’t time a dodge just right…DEATH! Nioh is difficult for difficulty’s sake. It’s not fair. It’s not fun. The boss fights alone are enough not to recommend Nioh. It’s the worst of Ninja Gaiden. It wasn’t fun then, and it’s not fun now.

Unlike Dark Souls, it’s nearly impossible to learn boss attack patterns in Nioh since all mistakes are fatal. According to nearly every forum I’ve read, players should use the safest and least aggressive playstyle in every confrontation. That’s a serious design flaw. Progression means nothing since mistakes are so brutally punished.

Missions have recommended levels which represent nothing because they aren’t indicative of actual difficulty. So a level 10 area may be nearly impassable compared to a level 20 and so forth. And a level 20 boss will still one shot a level 70 player. Oddly, most areas are moderately easy to navigate. It’s the bosses that ruin the flow. Rules constantly change as well. Some levels don’t have healing shrines. Others levels simply dish out waves of enemies on small maps. Players don’t know what kind of hogwash missions will throw at them. For anyone who’s played Gaiden, this is all too familiar. Once again, there can’t be “optimal builds”. Players must respec several times since virtually no build is capable of carrying anyone to end game. A progression system that doesn’t reward progress? Rubbish.

Technical issues further mar gameplay. Inventory management is cumbersome. Unpredictable hitboxes, janky iframes, and occasional input lag make things all the more frustrating. I’ve lost plenty of fights because my sword landed squarely on an enemy but no damaged registered. The enemy immediately executes a 5 hit combo which deals 9,740K damage against my 1,500K health bar. DEATH!

Nioh is an unrewarding pile of garbage. Self-respecting gamers should avoid it like the plague. There’s a reason Dark Souls is king of the hill. Despite technical flaws, Soul is the best in a genre it practically invented. Other than booting up, Nioh does almost nothing right. It's a culmination of design flaws. Once again, Team Ninja just doesn’t get it.

The first playthrough and 2nd are exciting and requires you to get better more so than grind and get more powerful. Despite how much I despised the grind I stuck it through, but each time a new game+ mode was added I was shocked to know that the same kind of grind just kept going, eventually they added a couple things that took the load off a bit. Love the game so much that I still went all the way through way of the nioh and even did alot of the abyss floors but I hope they approach the grind differently in a sequel. Some pretty crappy environment textures need to be addressed, a bit too many bonuses and buff/debuffs that take away from the combat, the story was okay, some more enemy variation would be appreciated in a sequel and I honestly think they should move away from the mission stage set up and take you out being in so many damn menus all the time and make everything a little more streamlined and seamless, less crap and filler and more focus on active jutsus/weapon skills, environments, enemy types. As much there is I dislike/would do different, I still adore this game. Played all 3 demos and honestly they were a little more simplistic then the full game and I liked it, they had the complexity where it counted and nothing more. Expand

The graphics, story, and ambiance are slightly inferior, but the combat, crafting and NG+ options are where it makes you deer it in the headlights. It is neither very epic or satisfying and feels like you are hitting your head against a wall. It also has equipment upgrade granulation and the subsequent inventory management issues that I find not fun at all.

Nioh follows in the footsteps of both Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls. It takes its combat from Dark Souls and the environment and story from Ninja Gaiden. These attributes are handled well but not in the same way either of its predecessors handled it before. Due to what I perceive as a core identity problem many areas of the game feels quite clunky and pointless and almost every area of the game suffers from this in some way.

The combat feels rewarding at times and completely worthless and unintuitive at others. An example would be after you beat the first oni it may feel great but then after a few more beaten without taking damage it becomes too easy. So, most lower ranked enemies send lots of signals... but then you get to the boss and they send almost none at all. You have to get used to their extremely minute signals and patterns but then they can all kill you in 2 hits. They are all seemingly more random than any game I've played so far and to me this all just screams something like artificial difficulty. Maybe I'm just bad but I don't want to slam my head against the first boss for 4 hours straight or have to develop an entirely new skillset paradigm to fit myself into for this game.

Otherwise the games story is unintrusive but moves you along well. The environments may look cool sometimes but are pretty bland and don't offer anything besides clutter to fill the gaps. Most of this is probably due to reused assets (maps and bosses) for some missions which is fine because it offers different challenges. The personal progression is interesting; there are lots of ways to customize your playthrough but I worry that it really just falls down to damage and healing like a lot of games.

My least favorite part of the game (besides how frusterating the combat can be) is the inventory management. You constantly pick up new equips that are only minute improvements over you last stuff and this can happen many times throughout a single mission. All equips have unique bonus stats like item drop rate, healing bonus, etc. that can change so you can also check on items of the same strength that may have that 1% better stat or choice of stats and it just get so annoying because it feels like 70% of your progression is tied to your equips. You can craft/buy your own weapons but its based on limited resources so sometimes you will get to a wall that you are not sure is because you are just not good enough, because there is some gimmick you are not seeing or because you equips are just a tad sub par. Combine this with the unimpressive environments and the copypaste of enemies throughout the whole game and it gets tiring.

Of course if you enjoy the micromanaging, trying new approaches, or just plain hard gameplay then this is the game for you.

Meh. It's okay. It hits some of the right notes from Dark Souls/Bloodborne, but has a couple of issues:

    1. It's too easy. There are definitely some decently hard PvE moments, and a challenging boss or two, but nothing truly difficult. The bosses in particular were lackluster - many of them were easily beatable on the first attempt, which is NOT what I expect from a soulsborne game.

    2. Lack of variety in the weapons. Every weapon in Dark Souls (and especially every weapon in bloodborne) has different movesets, abilities, and stats, giving the game a lot of variety and replayability. In Nioh, you pick your two weapon classes at the start of the game, and every weapon in that class plays very similarly. This gives the game a lot less variability than dark souls. Personally, I don't have a lot of desire to replay, which is the complete opposite to how I've felt about every other souls game.

    3. The game attempts to have a cogent story (unlike dark souls, which does most of it's storytelling in an unobtrusive way) and fails utterly. Characters are devoid of depth, historical figures show up in cameos that add nothing to the plot, and the villain is a standard 'cackling maniac' stereotype with inexplicable motivations. It's not a problem for a soulslike game to have a very minimal/threadbare story (see, for instance, Salt and Sanctuary) but when such a game tries and fails to create a story, it takes away from the overall quality of the game.

    Graphics 3/10
Animations are clunky, world looks like taken out of a ps3 game

    Sound 7/10
Good soundtrack and voice acting during cutscenes - rest not so much

    Gameplay 7/10
It has it's ups and downs but overall it's fun if you like action games. Some areas are not really thought thoroughly (inventory, picking up items, other small irritating things)

    Story meh/10
10/10 if you are into katanas and other gay Japanese **** otherwise nothing memorable

    Fun factor 8/10
Despite it's flaws it's still fun and can give you this "reward feeling" after beating a boss, farming and finally finding a better item, or looking how your character develops (in the "rpg way", from a weak badass to op badass).

Would recommend to a Souls fan bored of the Souls games, or to anyone when Nioh is on a sale. It's still better than majority of Souls clones wannabes on the market.

Firstly lets point out nioh's flaws.

    1. Should have been in tuturial.

    2. Camera angles in some end game missions when your fighting two bosses is a bother and often makes the fight hard for the wrong reasons.

    3. End game expects you farm 20 million in game currency and in my playthrough i got like 4???? my playthrough was at the average 80 to 100 hours. Why couldn't armita and currency be the same friggen stat?

    4. Not marking of spas the same way as komodoras often forcing tedious backtrack when going for spa hunter.

    5. No level slider on missions allowing you to replay specfic missions only (e.g) for armors. This somewhat allows the soul forging mechanic to be useful however but it would be better if you didn't need to farm for good gear in the end game just to farm gold.

    6. Not informing the player there is a way to increase short cut slots, meaning that i spent most of my game limited to 8 slots ,2 melee weapons and 2 ranged weapons meaning i died sometimes during menus when i was looking for extra health, or ranged bombs. (you can have 4 short cut slots and they are upgraded by talking with tome at the blacksmith.) wish i had known this much earlier.

    7. Boss fights spam overpowered moves that often instant kill and some fights won't even give you chance to use exilers an auto elixer armor would be helpful, of course this is rectified with magic and taking the instant cast on self mystic art.

    8. A limit on ninjistu and onymo (magic) that capacity caps at 40..... meaning you can't carry all your fav items at the same time. I wish there where items like locks that increased this or armors that increased carrying capacity.

    9. Strange culling glitches like walls causing a grainy screen effect. (no longer present from what i have seen in 1.21.)

10, Some dojo missions like spear proficency etc etc expect you to only use a weapon despite using that said weapon with ninjustu and magic for most encounters and forces you to use a powered down spear, It means like these missions get an inherit advantage from having more health or ki as primary stats and you can't use your sprit, magic, ninjustu or collected items in anyway which sucks.

    11. No special item to prevent enemies respawning when going to heal at shrine.

12 Not being able to select twilight missions in end game.

    Good things.

    1. mystic arts are cool and you should be able to take more than 1 from each category or have at least one wild card slot so for example instead of taking 1 from axe you can take 2 from ninjitsu.

    2. Different stances for weapons adds layer of complexity and has differing attacks and animations which is great.

    3. Living weapon is cool shame it got nerfed to crap meaning infinite living weapon builds suck as of 1.16.

    4. Uses hand cannon's, bows and rifles as ranged weapons.

I had put the game off for a while as the trailer and demo footage IMO didn't do it any justice. They showed off the most bland parts of the game unfortunately and I believed this to be a cheap souls rip off like Lords Of The Fallen. But it is far from it.

Nioh has taken the souls concept and built on it in a way that makes it fresh, interesting, engaging and challenging for jaded souls fans.

The game is very challenging and this makes for a very fun experience. I had gotten used to the souls games, the combat, the leveling, the weapons and items. Nioh however presents everything in a new way meaning you have no idea what anything is or does which adds to the engagement.

I had no idea you could gain back KI (stamina) during battle by pressing R1 while the gauge flashes until it happened by accident and I noticed. , I didn't know you could use items to replenish magic used to unleash a guardian spirit attack until I stumbled across it while trying to figure out what items would help in a boss fight. I worked out that you can chain combos with different stances and that different stances work well with different enemies. There is so much to discover and learn making Nioh an exciting new experience that makes you think and use your intelligence to win battles.

Nioh has a deep system that is refreshing and exciting, it has solid graphics and sound and good level design.

Nioh is not a perfect game though and after putting in many hours it is not as good as the Souls games. There are some unfair spikes and some of the bosses can be very unfair (including a very challenging boss on just the second level). I don't like the summoning system, you use an item to summon help (ochoko cup) which can be a real pain when they run out and you're stuck in the bowels of a dungeon running low on items. You also lose all progress in the dungeon if you return back to the level select screen. The level select screen feels out of place when in Souls games the world was one giant map that linked together. My other issue with summoning a player is that I summoned on one level where I thought I was on a boss. I couldn't be bothered to spend the next hour fighting it so I summoned only to find out it wasn't the level boss and there was an entire dungeon afterwards meaning I ran behind a high level summon who destroyed everything in his path and lead me to the boss who he defeated withing 5 mins. This completely ruined the level for me. I preferred the souls system where you summon before a boss for help with the boss only.

And my final complaint is that I don't like the protagonist. It feels strange that he has an Irish accent and looks like Geralt from the Witcher (which is truly bizarre). The voice acting works so much better in Japanese (which is a language I love hearing anyway). For me personally I thought the protagonist should have been Japanese, I know the story fits around a foreigner traveling to the far East, but it just didn't quite work for me. When you do meet the characters who speak Japanese it feels much more authentic.

But these issues are far from game breaking and exist because I'm comparing Nioh to one of my favorite game franchises. However I still feel Nioh is a fantastic game and I hope we see more games in the series.

There are a range of interesting enemies (all requiring knowledge of their movement, attacks, strengths and weaknesses) and some brilliantly designed bosses that can really break you until you figure them out!

Nioh has re-vitalised the rogue like genre and is a welcome addition. If you can get into it and learn the complex system it will be one of those games you talk about for years when discussing great games.

A Dark Souls clone? Nope. I feel like Nioh differentiates itself from the pack. It has a very unique fighting style and very challenging bosses even though none might not be especially memorable.

What an absolute disappointment. I was very excited to play this game, as a huge fan of the Soulsborne series and the Ninja Gaiden series, I was stoked to play this game.

After playing for a while, I became gradually more and more let down by the game. It lacked elements that I found necessary in both the previously listed series; skill, variety, and most importantly, fun. Dont get me wrong, the game requires skill and it can be fun... but I found these moments few and far between. My favourite part of Bloodborne or Dark Souls was how you dont need levels or items to kick ass if you have the skill and knowledge of the world. Likewise in the Ninja Gaiden series, skill was the largest factor for being able to withstand the unbelievable odds stacked against you. Every time Ive had difficulty with something in Nioh, it seems less like my skill is lacking and more that the enemy is too strong for me. This feeling was exaggerated when I went back to fight the same things I had trouble with, just now at a higher level, and I would wipe the floor with them, no problem. I didnt feel like my skill was any higher, just that my character was at a more equal power level.

I didnt pick up this game to grind.

I also want to note, since so many people commended the combat system, it is way worse than I was expecting. Someone even went on to say it was superior to Bloodborne! They can have their opinion but dont get your hopes up. The fun thing to me about Bloodbornes combat was the perfection of control and the variety in weapons. Nioh feels unreactive and unpolished (by comparison) and there are only a few weapons you can use (with hundreds of variations on the same weapon).

I wont lie, this game did so much right; soundtrack, art style, customization, loot collection, and more. But when it came to combat and gameplay, the most important part to me, it does not compete, it barely participates.

It provides over 40 hours of playtime and supports a wide variety of playstyles. However, it suffers from a lack of enemy variety, mediocre boss design, weirdly weightless animation, an unmemorable soundtrack and a somewhat poorly presented story.

    MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW

Nioh opens with your character (based on the real-life historical figure William Adams) being held prisoner in the Tower of London, where a spirit appears to him and tells him that "death is coming for him." This spirit is Saorise, a spirit who has been protecting him since he was a child, and is the reason William is able to sense and collect Amrita (basically souls). The two share a very deep relationship, and are inseperable. However, to the players' perspective, this spirit just kind of comes out of nowhere. There's nothing to indicate the two even know each other. Instead of giving the spirit a look of supreme relief, or commenting on the situation, or giving any hint at their history, William just stares at the camera grumpily. So when Saorise is stolen from him twenty minutes later, you don't feel anything apart from a mild "oh no, my waifu's been stolen."

The rest of the story involves William going to Japan to reclaim the spirit, and becoming embroiled in the war in the process. That part of the story is fine, but takes another dip when at the beginning of a particular boss fight, a samurai that's appeared several times experiences tragedy... and does so without wearing the incredibly distinctive helmet I recognized him by (he didn't appear enough for his face or mannerisms to be recognizeable). So I had no idea who he was and why I should care about him.

Speaking of distinctive helmets, Nioh sports a Diablo-style loot table. Equipment has random stats and effects. Usually, I hate this, because a cool sword or armor set you pick up gets totally outclassed an hour later, forcing you to constantly micromanage your equipment. However, the soul match mechanic, which allows you to raise the base stats of equipment, gives that cool sword a much longer lifespan.

Design-wise, the combat is fast and fluid, but hampered by lack of enemy variety and weightless animation. Most attacks do way more damage than they feel like they ought to, just because the animations have no weight behind them. So when a skeleton with a sword hits you for half your health or a yokai takes out two-thirds of your health bar with a lazy bare-handed chop, you feel vaguely cheated. Blocking is infinitely more useful than dodging; true to most action games, dodging does carry invincibility frames with it, but the timing is so tight that they're not worth relying on. Parry mechanics also exist, but with somehow even tighter timing, rendering them essentially worthless as well. The best skill, by far (apart for a skill that allows you to regain stamina on dodges) is a dual sword skill that allows you to dodge behind a blocking opponent and deliver a blow to their back. Even if they block that, it deals massive stamina damage, putting you at a brief advantage and providing one of the game's only counters to guard-turtling. Not only that, but while it copied the good elements of the Souls series, it also copied its flaws, the most egregious of which is a complete inability to pause. I get not being able to stop time to change equipment or use items, but sometimes I need to get up to answer the phone or something. Just let me put a hold on things when real life intrudes.

Boss design is similarly hit-and-miss. Weirdly enough, the more impressive a boss' entrance is, the more trivial the boss itself is to fight. Difficulty is all over the place, animations look and feel janky, most bosses are extremely vulnerable to being cheesed from range because they have no way to quickly close distance, and the Living Weapon mechanic basically allows you to skip the last third of their health bar. Human bosses are especially trivial: a certain spell paired with a certain guardian spirit allows you to consistently knock human bosses down, allowing you to deal critical damage, retreat and repeat.

The guardian spirits themselves, visually, are all lavishly designed and stylized in such a way that they all look fantastic. Each one provides a myriad of different effects that support a number of playstyles and equipment sets. And at least half are so situational that they're basically worthless. There are really only two or three worth using, and the Fuse-Ushi (bull) spirit is the most consistently useful.

For all its shortcomings, Nioh is a fun game, and definitely worth playing. If you enjoyed the Souls series or Ninja Gaiden, you'll probably enjoy Nioh.

One thing I greatly love is the way weapons refine overtime, giving you a solid enough reason to change up, if you're like me and want to upgrade all the weapons. And unlike many games, I enjoyed all the weapons equally for one reason or another, other games I find I prefer one weapon and end up sticking to it, but here I was constantly changing it up, none of the weapons felt useless or even inferior, they all had their purpose for certain enemies. Also, the reforge option should become a standard in all equipment games moving forward, allowing you to change the look of a strong item into a visage you prefer, so you can always choose your look and stick with your best items; lord knows in the past I've kept weaker equipment because I didn't like the way the stronger items looked. Soul Match is another great feature, merging weapons and armor to create even stronger weapons and armor. Just an excellent game through and through. Currently my GOTY. Expand

It is as frustrating as it could have been? No.

The gameplay: A fluent, Easy to Get Hard to Master philosophy will keep you going at trying to see the entire width of the system until the very end, especially if you're a casual like me. You see, I like Dark Souls, but what I liked about it is that the most complex spells and skills could be performed by me pressing one of the shoulder buttons.
Not in Nioh-Town, you want to do a complex backflip after recharge with a spin and a trio-stab? Gotta be in the right stance with the right weapon with the right skill using a button combination at the right time.
While this made having a mountain-size of weapons, like in Dark Souls, unnecassery, since you had a lot more to do with a few weapons, and thus wasn't a bad idea, it also meant that people who don't find the time to master the system feel it has been wasted the entire game. Kind of like trying to Parry in DS1, only in here it works better, so Plus for Nioh.

The Story: Taking history and kicking it around until it makes sense for your game is cool. I don't mind alternate histories of periods and settings I don't know anything about. What I do mind is a series of cutscenes and characters that are presumably important historical figures told me, having some moment say in the story, and we move on. In its Spiritual-Predecessor, Dark Souls, if you wanted to know the Lore that badly, you sat around and read rings. I just want the puppy soul-eater off the guy. Yeah, I know there's the Skip-button, but I feel like if I skip anymore cutscenes I won't get anything of what is going on, and I won't be able to sit down and read rings later to get it!

Level design: Probably a bad choice to let history limit you on this one. I never felt the levels were that different, and even when they were different visually, I can't say I felt they were beyond similar gauntlets. Maybe its because I did most of the sidequests, and a lot of them repeat and recycle the areas to submission, trying to add length to the game, whilst in the Predecessor (DS, if you didn't get it up to now) the game was long because you had to figure out where to go next, you were the only thing limiting your progression. In this game, even after doing all the side-missions, I ended up feeling underpowered for the end. So what does it say of people rushing out to do the main game before doing the rest of the side-missions? I can imagine it'll be frustrating.

Summary: It's a good way to spend your time if you don't have enough Dark Souls in your blood. When in doubt, unload this and reload Bloodborne, you'll notice significant improvements and less japanese history.

Plot, setting, characters and storytelling are all equally unoriginal. Despite this major flaw, everything is actually portrayed with superior quality. Overall the story and storytelling are interesting enough to always keep the player looking forward to what is happening next and creating motivation to finish the game.

    Sound: 10/10
Really great soundtrack. SFX are also adequate.

    Gameplay: 9/10
It truly is the best iteration of 3rd person action combat out there right now. The overall gameplay is challenging and highly rewarding. The item system also gives incentive to continue playing. At the same time the item system is also one of the flaws of the gameplay. The random attributes just don't really help the overall balancing, which is already weak. While the game starts out very challenging, it quickly turns into a walk in the park. Especially some attribute combinations and some special abilities completely ruin the balance later in the game. One of the patches already improved the balance on some things, though they will never be able to remove the balance issues that result from the random loot system. Only other flaw is the world not being connected and the large amount of simplistic side missions that result from that.
However, the gameplay by itself is already 11/10, so these flaws only have small influence in the big picture.

    Overall: 9/10
If you really love 3rd person action rpgs, it's a 10/10, but objectively speaking, the flaws in story and gameplay just don't warrant a 10/10.

Cons......... a few levels have weird fog or too much light which are a little rough on the eyes but no biggie. I think I was under leveled and under geared for most of the game and then the last region dumps so much gear and upgrades it's a little dumb. I don't like farming so if that's your thing you will like that about this game. I understand replaying levels and what not but killing the same dude 150 times so you can have a blue print to make some armor is a bit too much. But since the public loves the Dark Souls comparison, I will compare them. Compared to Dark Souls and Bloodborne, that game lacked the following:
    1. Music - I really miss the heavy orchestral music of Dark Souls and Bloodborne...they were part of what made boss battles so epic in those games. This game's music is a huge miss for me.
    2. Enemy Variety - In a game that revolves around memorizing enemy attack patterns, you need variety. Game simply lacks that.
    3. Challenge - The design heavily favors the player. You are about 3x faster than most of the enemies, the game breaking part is that you can backstep extremely fast which renders most enemy skills useless since they get baited really easily. Bosses, even the dual bosses in New Game+, were very manageable. The game simply isn't that demanding in terms of how much focus/practice needed. That can improve with the DLCs but that's a separate review. All this is before even considering the fact there are simply so many in-game tools you can utilize to break the game such as Sloth.
    4. RNG - After putting many hours in games like Diablo, Torchlight, Borderlands, I just don't appreciate RNG based loot grind as an endgame anymore. Others may love it though.

Other than above gripes, the game is fantastic. The combat is more flashy and fluid than Dark Souls (at the expense of challenge), the huge amount of move set for each weapon type, the japanese-history based fantasy setting, they were all very well done in my opinion.

In general, it is neither better nor worse than a Dark Souls game, just very different and refreshing.

As nearly every review mentioned, it starts with a pretty basic Dark Souls or Bloodborne clone and then proceeds to remove all of the fine-tuning, tweaking and polish From Software is known for.

Combat in the Dark Souls games feels tight, responsive and polished almost down to the frame. Combat in Nioh feels sloppy, sluggish and awkward. The camera refuses to readjust itself to a useful angle, so expect to constantly have to reposition it. Animation feels 'off', just sort of clunky and sloppy. Characters have extremely subtle 'tells' on attacks, preventing you from properly repositioning or counterattacking. I spent a dozen initial deaths trying to turn up the brightness, tweak the controls (which give you no fine per-button tuning options) to something useable to no avail. Nearly all the UI/UX suffers from minor polish issues, meaning even simple actions like picking up an item or opening a door require holding down a button instead of pressing, slowing you down and adding extra button presses where none were needed... seriously if you're ripping off From Software, just copy the parts that are working well. Don't change basic mechanics or button presses to something inferior just so you feel like you're copying them less.

Level design in Nioh is bland, repetitive and uninspired where From games are utterly covered with interesting details, interconnected passages.

Anyway, you get the idea. A Dark Souls clone with none of the story, level design, tight combat, polish or... well anything really. I got about 3-4 hours of increasing irritation for my $60 before uninstalling it. :/

I got to admit, I enjoyed this game more than I thought I would.

You can see it is trying really hard to be like the Dark Souls and Bloodborne series. However I felt it was far more like the Onimusha series with elements of Souls game. Regardless of its influence, it's great and manages to be it's own thing too.

Visually the set pieces are fantastically detailed yet some of the stages were a tad too dark. The camera angle was also irritating at times, often not adjusting properly or positioning itself in poor spots hampering combat at times.

While I like loot based games, Nioh kind of went overboard. You get too much of it too quickly and too much variety making the crafting and fusing systems almost redundant for most of the first playthrough. Only in NG+ does it calm down to more manageable frequency.

Combat is allot of fun and gets better once you find the weapon you like the most (personally, I like the lance the most.) However it can get a bit repetitive oce you have a high level character with all skills unlocked. Spamming strong combos can become a thing. Also to note that unlike the Souls games, this game is not difficult, in fact it can be too easy allot of the time. What this game does is punishes carelessness and reckless behaviour. If you don't pay attention to what's going on and your environment you will die. But keep your eyes open and be careful, and the game will be a breeze.

    Overall:
Nioh is a worthy competitor to the Souls, but still needs a bit more polish in some areas to be what it could be. I hope Nioh 2 learns and improves on this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a long time fan demon/darksouls/bloodborne, I was very interested in this game, and I was having fun at the start. Unfortunately the lack of polish, terrible inventory/loot management, and random difficulty lead to a lot of frustration. Looking forward to Nioh 2, if they can iron out all the faults from the first game. *Spoilers: For a game with multiple tutorial levels over the first 2 hours (weirdly repeated), you wouldn't expect bosses as unbalanced as the Bat Lady from level 3 (fast high damage attacks, un-dodgeable instant kill, stunning ranged attack, drains stamina, immune to hit-stun) Expand

A very good game! With so much content in a type of gameplay similar to Dark Souls, but it's better with more options and battle style. Play against the warriors from feudal Japan in a journey with William. The First ocident to master the sword. This game is really 10/10.

My first dive into the "souls-bourne" genre of games, and I've got to say. Wow. Colour me impressed! Great challenge, and a heck of a lot of fun! The story is rubbish but the combat is impeccable!

Because of it I went out and got Bloodborne too! Definitely a great way to get into this genre of punishing games without having ridiculously slow combat!

I made it through 3 bosses in the game. The whole thing I hear from people that love these games is:

"The sense of accomplishment for beating a hard boss is what keeps me coming back."

Well, no. I loathed the boss fights, dreaded fighting them and didn't look forward to ANY in the future. When did this type of game become a thing? How did the industry get away with marketing undertuned game mechanics/controllers as a layer of intense gameplay? This hopefully will just be another niche trope on the pile of failed attempts of "innovating" within the video game industry.

+ very well balanced (if you like a good challenge: demands your attention!)
+ smart level design that encourages exploration
    + impressive boss-fights
    + stunning animation-work
    + technically sound
    + interesting setting
+ expansive campaign with incredible replay-value

    - some frustrating scenes
    - enemy variety falls a little short
    - some environments a little dark
    - overwhelming (if well structured) menus

The story is convoluted and tonally all over the place, yet uses its setting and humor well and never gets in the way of gameplay.
Technically Nioh impresses with brilliant animations and moody design as well as the option for the player to choose between a high framerate or a higher resolution. For me personally, the environments tend to be a bit too dark, especially in the main missions.

The game has many similarities to Bloodborne but the controls are even tighter, the action even faster. Instead of the Souls-typical Metroidvania structure, Nioh is structured more conventionally, with many seperate (but still big and intelligently designed) levels that offer main- or side-missions. There is a heavy emphasise on loot, which will hook those, who love grinding for gear but won't stand in the way if you are not that type of gamer, as I am.

The enemies are creatively designed. However, given the huge size of the game (plan to play around 40 hours to see the end credits, with many side-missions and activities for replay value), the enemy variety is a bit lacking. The many boss-encounters range from fairly standard to absolutely brilliant. Most of them are beautifully created, but a few are less about searching for a fitting strategy but rather brute force.

Finally a word on the difficulty: Yes, Nioh demands your full attention. Even the tiniest enemy can be a lethal threat. However, since the game allows for so many solutions for any given task, each gamer who wants to beat the game, should be able to. You just have to figure out, which systems benefit your play-style the most: Do you want to hack and slash through the game? Grind for experience and gear! Do you like to use items, trick enemies and play stealthily? Learn Ninja-powers! Want to fight many enemies at once? Learn axe-combos! Are you a explorer? Find the kodamas and benefit from their help. Are you a social gamer? Invite friends to help you!, etc.etc... The systems in Nioh are so very deep and varied that about every gamer should find a way to enjoy the game. This, of course, is further emphasized by the very responsive controls.

What sets Nioh apart from the Souls series is a much better and more robust combat system, which can be tailored to your style. The gameplay rhythm is similar to Bloodborne, if not even faster, thanks to the 60 fps of the action mode. There are no bugs and glitches. The art style focuses on Japan's Sengoku period. Enemies are quite repetitive after many hours, but the various boss fights are well balanced and fairly challenging and innovative. Particularly human bosses are the most difficult because they are fast and nimble, but you can always summon another player to help you out. Unfortunately there is currently no online PvP mode (aside from summoning AI-controlled Revenants with equipment based on players who got killed online), but Team Ninja have promised such a mode will be available as a free update in the near future.

However, Nioh doesn't have the mystery and sophisticated lore of Dark Souls, nor a unified map. It's got a story with cut-scenes, loosely based on historical events, but the plot is nonsensical and just an excuse to slay demons. The game has many self-contained levels that are pretty expansive in all axes, full of traps and loot and enemies, but they are not united. On the other hand the lack of an open world makes loading times much faster than the Souls games. You will be cut down and in 5 seconds you are ready to go, whereas in Dark Souls you may have to wait for up to a whole minute. Menus are a bit difficult to decipher at first, but you will get used to them.

Nioh is Team Ninja's first attemp at making a Souls-like game, and they succeeded in their goal. I hope they make another game in the future, after finishing Nioh's DLCs. My 8/10 score reflects the current state of the game. I 'll update when the online PvP mode is released, and may give the game another point in the final score depending on the PvP mode's quality.

As a gamer who enjoys creating builds and min-maxing their characters this game offered this quality in abundance. There are obvious comparisons to be made with the Bloodsouls games which have possibly become my favourite franchise of recent years (maybe with the exception of The Witcher trilogy - even the first one) however Nioh is still able to forge an individual identity of its own.

There are many things that I enjoyed on my playthrough of Nioh from the unique and innovative combat system to the some of the more creatively designed bosses. It is occasionally difficult but I've never felt utterly overwhelmed by any particular enemy as they have always simply required a combination of the correct approach and practice.

Mid-way through my playthrough of Nioh however I did find that I was becoming incredibly bored and it became a chore to continue. This I believe was caused primarily by the repetition of enemies and environments which was failing to produce a world of any interest or curiosity. The mission levels were equivocally bland and tedious as I began to rush through a mission on a level that I had already completed a few time before. Equally the plot was disappointing and dull (I did read the additional information provided) which meant that I failed to invest in either the world or the characters on my playthrough. It seemed to devolve into a standard loot-based grind which is fine most of the time but I tend to play these games in-between other games.

There are many things to love about Nioh and if you like difficult games which require you to micro manage your inventory and character stats then I would really suggest that you try this game. I'll continue to dip into Nioh at regular intervals but I can't justify a score higher than a 7 for the reasons outlined above.

This game is 100% about combat and it does it better than any game I've ever played. To like Nioh is to immerse yourself into the complexity of its combat mechanics which are brilliant. Its not about reactions (quick dodges) or coordination (slinging complex combos)!!! It is about studying your opponents, understanding their attacks and weaknesses and being able to devise a winning strategy. This aspect of the game encourages you to learn and master different weapons and different stances. This even applies to the armor your wear. Sometimes its good to have the extra protection of heavy armor...sometimes its better to have the agility and stamina of light/ninja armor. The numbers of layers of complexity to the fighting mechanics are really the star of the game and what keeps you coming back for more.

Level design is decent enough although fairly linear. Story is not really a strong part of the game.

In terms of the RPG aspects, leveling skills and getting new gear are satisfying although not game changing. There will be small improvements and cool new weapons at times, but ultimately they have limited effect on the outcome of your battles.

I am very surprised to have taken such a liking to this game because I typically like action RPGs that are also very strong on story and RPG elements.
