The route B was offsetting as first since it didnt deviate enough fro route A but as soon as we start the game proper (yes, i consider A & B as prologue) then things really start to hit is off. Similar to anime where the first half of the season is light hearted with dark tones glimmered underneath the surface the everything start to boil up in the second half as wham moments come ini succeeding fashion that left me at awe.

It is not for everyone but a game doesnt need to be for everyone to be considered great. It delivered what it aim to. An experience we rarely see in games nowadays. Its art in our worlds current form.

    A great beautiful game.

I just wanna say that the people who didn't go past the first ending and decided the game was meh haven't even experienced a fraction of what this game really is: an incredibly powerful story, at whose core lies the question: what does it mean to be human?

On top of the deep philosophical themes, you have many emotional scenes. The C and D endings are an emotional rollercoaster, as you see the story become darker and darker. It makes ending E so impactful, because the ultimate ending is one full of hope.

It helps a lot that the music is absolutely amazing, not only fitting everything that happens, but enhancing it. I doubt the scene at the factory would be the same level of eerie without "Become as Gods", or that the ending E would have as much impact without "Weight of the World".

It's also hard not to mention the characters, who make the whole story possible. And as much as I love 2B, 9S, and their interactions and relationship which is complicated to say the least, I think it's A2 that ultimately stole my heart. She's made out to be a cold and mysterious character at first, but the more time you play as her, the more her soft side shows, and you grow sympathy for her. By the end she was easily my favorite. I also loved Devola and Popola, Adam and Eve, 6O and 21O, and Pascal, who are all side characters, but are still incredibly interesting and lovable.

Mechanically the game is really solid, the combat and movement were all smooth and felt nice, I often jumped around just to see the smooth animations of the main characters. The experience is very customizable: on Easy mode you can choose just how much help you need. For example, I only ever used the Auto-shoot chip, because I was annoyed with having to constantly manually shoot. All 3 playable characters are unique, and each is fun to play, I'd have a hard time picking my favorite.

All in all, it's a game that everyone should play, and it easily jumped to my #1 spot in terms of favorite game, it has great characters, story, music, graphics, gameplay... I don't know how one would go about making a greater game, it simply hits the right beats in so many different places, and it's so clearly a product of a lot of work, but more importantly a lot of love, not only from the director, Yoko Taro.

If you didn't give it a chance after ending A, or didn't play it at all, please do. It's the one game I can recommend without any doubts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow I don't even know how to start this one. Let's say this: Nier: Automata isn´t "nier perfect", it is a straight masterpiece. Everything about the game is beautiful.
It has a cast of great characters that have defined relationships and personalities that make it easy to connect with them (the humor involving them is also great). I loved everyone (even the operators and the pods). The enemies are also amazing and always come with an interesting story and purpose. 2B, 9S, A2, Pascal, just to name a few, are characters whose stories get developed during the game and we end up loving each one because we are able to see through their perspective.
The combat is simply amazing, full of different ways of fighting your enemies. The strikes are powerful and the agility of the androids accompanied with a fantastic evade button makes for great fights. Each character has a different style we'll get accustomed to (hacking is really fun).
The goddamn music is simply the best in video game history. Each zone theme was beautiful and represented said area perfectly ("city ruins", the desert complex theme, "the forest kingdom", the GODDAMN AMUSEMENT PARK THEME), the battle themes are godly ("become as gods", "this cannot continue", "birth of a wish"), the fight with Simone while "a beautiful song" plays and is synchronized with the gameplay ... love it. These are just some examples. I just want to end this section by saying that "The weight of the world" hits differently after finishing the game.
The story and the world are extremely philosophical. The story takes the characters to the limits of their "emotions" and throughout the game it shows examples of characters facing hard questions like : the purpose of their life? why do they still live if they cannot feel?. Some acquire emotions in their attempt to copy the humans but are confronted with fear, others with desire. The machines form family ties and try to avenge their fallen loved ones. Both the machines and the androids end up acting like humans. In the route C and D we see how both sides (especially the androids) try to find meaning in their lives when their sole purpose is destroyed. Both sides try to live in a world without god, without values and by doing that these pieces of AI end up practicing free will.
Ending E is beautiful. Everything about it is perfect: how the pods cannot let the androids they actually grew attached to die so by refusing for that to happen they exercise free will and develop consciousness; the player has to fight the credits, which represent the creators or God, while the weight of the world plays...but you can't and fail. Then after a few attempts the kindness of total strangers, who deleted their save data in a selfless act, allows you to fight but this time not alone and the weight of the world plays now in chorus. Then the post credits scene shows that there is meaning to it all and only you can decide your future. The game ends by asking if you want to delete your save to help others. This goes in line with the theme of the game: you can keep your save but you can try to be kinder and give purpose to your work (by allowing it to aid others in their quest to finish this game).
Nier: Automata is a masterpiece. A game that transcends its medium and tries to question its players while also giving them a thrilling experience. Everything about this work of art is beautiful and purposeful. Nier will certainly be an experience I won't forget. A journey of emotional and philosophical moments and ideas.

The characters are amazing and unique as these androids struggle with the exact same questions we do when it comes to suffering, understanding, and meaning of life. Their journey and character development is a joy to watch as they fight a long and arduous war with the machines; quest to help others and always question the meaning behind all their actions. The full credit ending was amazing, bringing in other players to help you and giving you a choice to be selfless and help another player in the future. Besides the incredible journey and story, the world design and map changes keep the game fresh and beautiful. The combat mechanics are some of the best and interactive I have ever played, great combat variety and challenging. Best music in any video game I have ever heard hands down. Overall, nothing wrong with it at all. Be sure to keep playing past ending A, B, C, and D there is a lot of story still there. This game truly deserves a perfect score, the only reason I feel it wasn’t more popular is because it didn’t gain much publicity as it launched. I also read the short book associated with this game, it also adds amazing detail in short stories of A2, 2B, and 9S that you would love if you loved the original game. A JRPG masterpiece, if you love the genre or would love to explore it, perfect game for it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I almost gave up after I finished Route A. I mean I had finished the game and made it to the end credits after all? I was disappointed by the story and found it very dull. However, after reading on the internet, you're actually supposed to keep playing and reload your save file after you finish the first ending, and boy did the rest of the game not disappoint. By the end of Route E I was nearly in tears, and this is coming from someone that doesn't cry very often in video games. The combat was fun although the most fun I had was playing as 9S and utilizing his hacking abilities to defeat enemies. It was a lot more satisfying than the repetitive button mashing of 2B and A2. With slightly tighter combat and story resources accessible in the game rather than real world novellas, I would give this a 10/10. But as it stands, with incredible atmosphere, music, and fun hacking, I give this game an 8/10 Expand

The story is compelling and gripping from the very beginning, the ost is perhaps one of the best and most fitting in recent memory and the characters including the machines are engaging. The storytelling, addition of 'light' multiplayer elements and layered gameplay make for an unforgettable experience that everyone should try.

The problem for me is that the world itself gets boring fast, which is mainly an issue because this game is designed to easily surpass 50+ hours.
Fixing this is not too difficult (but costly of course). Fleshout the world more, more details, more npcs and most importantly more areas to explore. Revisiting the same places over and over was very tedious by the end.

With that said I still enjoyed the game and wish to see more like it. Hopefully developers can make some of these improvements, looking forward to what is next.

Simply put, this is one of the best games of all time. Yoko Taro finally balanced an amazing story with great gameplay, making this game a masterpiece in the action RPG genre. The replay value is amazing and the pacing of the story is excellent. If you still haven’t played this game, hurry! It’s one of my personal favorites of the PS4/ONE generation.

I loved the visuals and soundtrack, but the story is lackluster and the enemies are all too similar. I think the first route should be enticing enough for me to play the other routes, but as it wasn't I don't think I'll come back to it. Imo, there are many other RPG/JRPG to get into that have a better story.

    -Enemies are generic and boring
    - Combat is repetitive, just spam square essentially
    - 2b and 9s have no personality. 2b developed by showing her emotions but it's feels really shallow
    - The characters contradict themselves all the time between side quests and main quest cutscenes. One second she's supportive of non-combative machines and in other moments she doesn't give a toss
    - Her caring for 9s felt forced, they had like no chemistry (you find out why in future routes but it still was poorly done)
    - Voice acting in this game is amateur
    - Villains had no personality, they were just bad for the sake of it (In future routes you see why, but it still wasn't organically fleshed out)
    - Map and UI is clunky
    - Side quests were BORING
    - By the end of route A, it felt like I played a stupid anime kid's game

The one good thing about this route was the music.
5/10, the most average game ever. It tried to be deep, but it wasn't.

    Route B Review
-Very repetitive as it's the same story, but with some interesting bits.
-The delivery for some big story beats fell flat, like the info on humans. 6/10

    Route C, D, and E Review
    - Thought the story would be a mind f like people say, but it was straightforward, kinda boring actually.
    - Sometimes the game impresses you with certain sequences but it's always short-lived.
    - Last 10 mins of C and D and E were good. 7/10

The game is a 6/10 overall. It was poorly directed and executed. It was tedious, and the gameplay dragged; cut scenes featured poor voice acting(English DUB) and stiff animations. It felt like the writer was lazy by making the lore boring and meaningless. Keep in mind that I don't particularly like Eva. If you want to play Japanese games with better stories and gameplay, you should play Shadow of the Colossus and Gravity Rush. Though the story of Gravity Rush was a little disappointing, it had much better gameplay and much more interesting characters. And SOTC is a classic, highly recommend.

    - Story Wise? It's a masterpiece
    - Gameplay? lot of weapons, different Kinds of fighting style, fun combat movements
    - Voice acting? English and Japanese Dub did they very job to make this game wonderful, they managed to Relay the feelings of the androids even if its hard because they supposed to not have any feelings.
    - Music? Nier have the best ost out of all the games i played, Really hits you right into the heart and feelings
    - Design? superb, Well not going to lie most of people came for 2B's Cultured Android Parts but i know very well that we all stayed for the story
    - Characters? everyone of them got their own Characters and behavior, i may find 9S little bit unreasonable at the end but i find it really beautiful.. the brothers adam and eve, they both really have a wonderful relationship, mostly eve being a little spoiled brother.. Machines like Pascal Really well made, it's a little bit sad that everything that he tried to protect gone and at the end he chose to forget it since he said that it pains him in his heart (even if he is a machine), A2 your typical Tsundere type but really fun to play and watch with, she may not straight with her feelings but when she do, you know it's something special.. 2B although 2b's original mission was regarding to all the YoRHa units, she still forced herself composed with her emotion, it's indeed a curse of cycle of life and death. The Twins Devola and Popola, Same as Adam and eve, The Twins really made the story much more interesting, also them dying together rather than being alone is little bit sad but beautiful reason.

overall this game has been one of the greatest choice i ever made in my life, with the ability to do the things at the end of Ending E (which is deleting data just to help the other players stucked) i found it very beautiful, to me deleting all the data i had (more than 50 hrs) even if i picked yes out of curiosity, in the end when i found out that it really got deleted, it was the best choice i did not because i hated it but because it's the best way to end a journey!! Thank you very much yoko taro for making this game and as for the other nier games i highly recommend you all to play it!!

After the 1/3rd mark in the game it became clear that I just wanted to get to the end, hearing good things about the story made me think that this would redeem it. Skipping side-missions and rushing through main missions I acknowledge that this left me underleveled for some later missions. But the difficulty spike is steep, leaving what was already mundane combat, also needlessly difficult. The last half of the game was played on easy mode. The remainder of my play-through was a glorified lets play because of this, at-least allowing me to participate in its story. This too however left me frustrated, the story never gets much better. There are certainly interesting concepts at play here, but fumbled horribly with bad writing, unlikable characters, and what I felt were very predictable twists. Despite it landing its ending, I find myself wishing I had left the controller down after one of the many encounters when the visuals got too confusing to see the overpowered enemies. Expand

Automata aims to explore the human condition through inhuman characters, tackling themes of identity and existentialism, but it fails at it, completely lacking the nuance to do it in a compelling way, with heavy-handed dialogue and simplistic, basic characters. Even with such flawed writing, the plot itself manages to surprise and entertain thanks to a great art direction, coupled with a beautifully melancholic soundtrack and a couple of captivating segments that take full advantage of videogames' systems and interactivity as an artistic medium to enhance the player's involvement in the narrative, even more than its predecessor did. Also like the original Nier, Automata frequently shifts its camera perspective, going from third-person to top-down, from side-scroller to isometric, giving each area a distinct exploration flare with varied battle scenarios. This framing variety accompanies combat's multifaceted structure, since the captivating blend of Action RPG and Bullet-Hell is also back. The combat system is greatly entertaining thanks to a nice weapon variety and fluid combos, while the Bullet-Hell element is now even more relevant but greatly suffers from severely repetitive battle scenarios. Physical combat has a similiar problem due to a shortage of meaningful variables unlocked throughout the experience and an extremely poor enemy variety, but the game partially makes up for it with great boss fights and a pleasantly extensive equipment system allowing players to strategically organize inventory space to add various active and passive abilities, suiting different playstyles and customizing progression.

Go kill these machines in this red circle on the map and bring back the parts. Just like the first time, I killed them all and got 3/4 parts. Looking it up online I had found out that the only way to complete this quest is to quit and reload the game and do that quest yet again. It was at this point, I realized this game has no respect for me alot of the time.

At first this game's aesthetic and unique chip upgrade system. had me thinking this might be one of my favorite rpgs. But you've heard the hype, lets get down to brass tacks the mainstream reviewers blatantly ignored.

-Grossly poorly designed and super cringily cheesy shirtless anime boys turn out to be the villains, and ruin the games entire aesthetic and believability

-There are no level indicators for missions which makes for tons of frustration and backtracking and wasted time

-seeing enemies level up when I do to stay the same level as me just feels like cheap plastic

-There is absolutely no warning that you are about to progress the story to a point of no return and loose all those unfinished quests you've already completed 75% of.

-I did a side quest that took me all around the map and it gave me a key to a mysterious elevator. Found the elevator and it wouldn't open, had to look it up online, turns out because I didn't have a character with me for the rest of the game due to story reasons, I could no longer go down that elevator. No story reason for it, just a blatant big ol' slap in the face.

-A quest where you hunt down defectors just straight up broke

-Make sure you save in the middle of big sequences because just because you think it would autosave after a big fight while the action is still building, it may not

-Plot starts strong and inspiring, then gets generic, predictable, and juvenile

-I was told i was given a chip and could take it off, spent a long time looking for it. Turns out that chip doesn't actually exist, unlike every other chip in the game, such as the chip that is your life, which you can remove to kill yourself.

-Finding stuff the world is an annoying chore, had to keep looking up a guide to find how to get places.

-there is even a part where you get in a giant cannon and have to shoot a giant epic enemy, and they don't even let you aim. might as well have been a quicktime event

This game is verrry overhyped, and i really hope they come out with a sequel that is much much better, because there is some cool stuff in this game.

    [Update]

-upon watching the rest of the story on youtube, it is over drawn out despair porn, do not play this game if you want to be happy

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (wip) It hurts me to give NA this score. There is so much here that is so good! Rarely does a game NAIL it's atmosphere like NA does. Chrono Trigger, Kirby Super Star, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, FF7-8, there are some games that make such an immersive atmosphere that stands out above others. The gothic, anime style, the dark story, the giant-robot battles, the delicious waifus (rock on, Japan!), the slick sword play, the numerous, engaging side quests, and HOLY JEEBUS THE REPLAYABILITY, so why the low score?

NA follows a sexy android known as 2B. 2B is a combat android that can swing swords that gravitate to her back like a sheathe, fly jets, super agile, and assisted by a little floating robot with an SMG, while sporting her standard-issue micro skirt and white thong. Tagging along is 9S, a young male android that's smitten with her. He's a hacker and scout.

It all starts with 2B entering her mission via jet. The "machines" - more robust, less intelligent, and collective-zealous robots - are building something big, and she's off to save the day in an over the top clash with a giant robot. It's standard and ho-hum....but things eerily change as the machines grow more sentient, and start asking questions about their existence, form religions, and even try to procreate. Even the fellow androids 2B works with start behaving like adolescent teenagers. Things quickly spiral as you realize the game has no villain. You're slaughtering waves of confused innocents, as the game keeps reminding you NOT to feel bad for any of them. They're all just robots, right?

This story telling is by far the most powerful aspect of NA. It does story-telling techniques of visual metaphors that has long since been lost in writing in recent times i.e. both the heroes wear blindfolds; signifying their ignorance to truth or purpose in a cruel world, or how NPC's are named after famous philosophers and behave similar to them. The story is wrapped in philosophical questions about god, religion, existence, war, meaning of life, meaning of suffering, and so on. It's a story like the books of old - Orwell's 1984, for example - where the events stayed with you; loomed in your mind and challenged what you believe in. It even inspired many youtubers to cut into NA's meaning, and they were very entertaining to watch! NA also has about 20 different endings, most of them 10s long jokes, but the final ending, and seeing it all come together had me crying a little.....but...

The gameplay is where NA falls flat. It's a mediocre hack-n-slash that has 2 maps: a beige, city ruins, and a desert. They're about as exciting as they sound. What really kills it is enemy variety. I think I fought 3 enemies the entire game, outside of bosses. It gets really, really tedious, but what keeps you in it is the looming eeriness of the characters around you changing, along with that weird, anime s*** that ppl love, like if you play online and die, you have to leave a message of your death to other players based on presets. You'll make things like "A desperate android.....thought they heard an old friend....at a familiar place".

Equally as good as the story is the majestic soundtrack. If I had any power to do so, I would put it somewhere in a list of "Top 50 video game soundtracks of all time". Some of these tracks will stay with me for the rest of my life, like:

Vague Hope (featuring a beautiful, fictitious language called Chaos)
    City Ruins
    Wretched Machinery
    Treasured Memories
    Weight of the World (English)
Grandma Destruction (ironic name, epic track)

NA's OST captures a wide range of sounds from tragic, to nostalgia, to epic battle, to grim and soothing.

What I commend NA the most for is taking such creative risks with the plot. I suppose I can only speak for myself when I say: I'm sick of every video game having # stories: ex-military's wife/daughter are killed/kidnapped, and now he's out for revenge, WW2, a little boy runs an errand and comes back to a burning village, WW2, a tyrant is taking over the world but stands no chance against the marine that can take a tank shell to the face but as long as he hides behind sheet metal and holds his breath for 10s, he'll be fine, WW2, the princess was kidnapped, WW2, OMG ZOMBIES, WW2. COME. ON. RISKS, like after you beat it once, you play it again but as 9S, and the game is slightly different with some plot insights, then a 3rd time through as the assassin droid A2 where the plot REALLY goes nuts.

So do I recommend? Not really. You can get anything you want out of this game by watching a youtube playthrough, though I still highly recommend supporting NA in any way you can.

Conclusion: NA is a captivating experience and a meal for the intellectual mind with lovely waifus to top it off. Epic story, but there isn't much gameplay, which is feeding a trend of playable movies instead of video games.

I beat the game a few days ago, and I'm not sure what score to give it yet. It feels like a lot to process. At the start of the game, it feels like what's going to be an awesome and fun open world to explore. The music, combat, and characters were and are still great. But to say the least, things take a turn after playing the 2nd ending.

It becomes more than just a videogame. Things get real bad, real fast. Everything you are attached to (and in my case, very attached) is either tainted or destroyed. 2B getting infected was sad, but I can't remember anything in a videogame that made me feel more pain than the whole thing with pascal.

Personally, I got ending D first. The reason for this is because while I knew picking A2 was the better option, I let my attachment to 9S control the decision after the game said "are you sure". I told myself I would just go back and get the other one after I saw what happened, which I did. After picking A2, I'm not even sure if I can call ending E happy. It's probably the best I could get, but the story still hurts.

As I said I don't even know how I feel about it on an emotional level. Was the experience good? Am I glad I played it? I don't know. I will say that the game is very well put together and definitely did it's job. The only criticism I have is that the PC port isn't good and you need to replay the first ending as 9S, but maybe I made a mistake in skipping out on the side quests.

Pros: controls, combat, characters, soundtrack, story, world building

    Cons: pain.

Games are rarely philosophical like this. And even more rarely do they successfully deal with these themes and tie them into an interesting story. That's what Nier does better than any other game. Its a decent example of games as an artform, although I'd argue that it falls short of other examples such as Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus.

Other than that, I loved the music, and

That's what Nier does better than any other game. Its a decent example of games as an artform, although I'd argue that it falls short of other examples such as Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus.

Other than that, I loved the music, and enjoyed the variety of different gameplay.

But overall, despite the variation of different gameplay, it overstays its welcome and becomes really dull. Level design and the main type of combat are pretty uninspired. Its very tedious.

1 point off for the oversexualization of the main characters too. Its just JRPG cringe.

good things: special effects, animations, character models, combat. The music is as good as they say. weapon variety and uniqueness + chip system.

what could have been improved: make vehicles available or make fast travel available earlier. especially for the 2nd play-through. The game crashed 6 times on Ps5 for me - something which happens often if i am to believe the reddit posts on the matter. After 30 hours already, i unfortunately couldn't keep going, when i could be playing other games with no big bug issues like this. also. many buildings look ugly and empty.

issues: the story is interesting but so confusing. you also have to replay the game twice which was incredibly tedious and annoying. also no invincibility while hitting and the pod's lock on was usually not on the enemy i wanted. the map and mini maps are horrible. the map is annoying to control/move, and it was soo clustered and full of huge red circles and red diamonds and red dots, even more so if you accepted side missions, so i stopped accepting side quests. losing chips when you die. in dark souls, you lose the souls you collected, but not your weapons or core stats/skills, meaning that you can come back and still fight like before to try and retrieve lost souls, but here, you come back weaker, more vulnerable, and not knowing what to expect - not fun.

Conclusion: major issues on ps5 made it crash often, the 2nd most after cyberpunk2077 in my experience. the story structure is confusing and unsatisfying to go through, despite interesting themes /tones/ideas. The storytelling should have been clearer, just like the map. The music and Japanese VA are a strong point. 2B and 9S look fantastic, but the surroundings not as much. the combat is good but i see room for improvement (improving lock-on, adding invincibility on attack or parrying, keeping chips when dying). it is nonetheless memorable, fun, and unique overall. 85/100

One of the easiest 10s you can give to a game imo. The brilliant writing of Yoko Taro mixed with Platinum Games combat and an absolute killer soundtrack.

There is really nothing this game does bad and it is such a unique gaming experience if you aren't familiar with Yoko Taros other games I'd recommend everyone to pick it up.

Pretty unique in a lot of ways, but definitely super overrated!!!! The open world isnt exciting at all and it has a lot of annoying game design choices (for example the save system).

A good game, but VERY overrated. While polished and enjoyable, has many flaws. Huge lack of enemy variety, too few bosses, combat is clean but gets repetitive, the story is predictable if you are not under 14yo, and I couldn't care for any of the main characters. A good game overall and better than most of modern games, but as I said, really overrated.

very bad game. players just love it because of 2Bs ass. Firtsly story is too complicated and incomprehensible. mechanics are medium. level design is trash. invisible walls are everywhere. its completely unacceptable in 2017. i am not going to even mention about the 2nd and 3rd campaign its a **** obviously. I would rate this game "0" but 2Bs porns are amazing so it deserves 2 points

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
