The story is quite involved and intelligently done. It didn't blow my mind, but at least it explored some of the big themes of existence a bit. I mean, that's a big deal in video games. Even if it feels slightly gimmicky.

There's a famous in-game performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' that I looked forward to. But it was just silly joke. Didn't even pretend or try to live up to Shakespeare's play.

I file Nier Automata under 'Japanese Sci-fi Action' and say it succeeded at what it tried to do. It's just not much more than entertainment, and certainly not as high-brow or philosophical as some people claim.

And the gameplay is not as innovative or groundbreaking as I expected. At no point did it make me go "Wait, a game can do THAT?!". It does mix up various mini-games, but Final Fantasy had mini-games too. It didn't blow my mind in either series.

I did actually play through the entire game and got the credits-mini-game. I invested plenty of time and consideration for the game, but it's just not the mind-blowing game that I expected. It's great as an open-world action game... but some of the fetch quests p*ssed me off.

The best this game features is a very smooth and visually pleasing combat hack and slash, before I know it i was smashing buttons and it didn't feel all that repetitive because of the visual fireworks on screen as you fight. The story was interesting, and it got more interesting as the game went on. I will say you'll have to atleast play through this game a few times to be satisfied of the story. This game is definitely not for someone looking for a 10 hour game. Pros: Excellent and visually pleasing combat, some loot worth grinding/looking for, story, great soundtrack and atmosphere. The So-So= Ok open world and sidequest, graphics look last gen. Cons: can get repetitive to some, not meant for people who don't like to grind, takes multiple play through to be satisfied of story. 8.5/10 Expand

N:A doesn't do much of anything that hasn't been done already, and it doesn't do any of it justice. The world is really small, kinda ugly to look at and overall not gratifying or rewarding to explore. Graphics aren't everything but most environments don't even look good artistically. RPG elements are really tame, almost non existent despite the game being advertised as an RPG. Sidequests are mostly fetch quests, NPCs are mostly lifeless, just standing around staring blankly ahead like action figures.

The story can be entertaining but whether or not you still care by the time you get to the good stuff will depend on how many times you can stand being forced to retread the same bland locations, since the full story is locked behind NG+.

The combat functions fine but even that is screwed to a degree because your only options for difficulty are play on autopilot, or die in 2 hits and go back to your last manual save, which feels totally out of place in a game like this and ends up making it even more tedious than the easier mode.

It's a serviceable enough hack n slash if you're just looking for something to turn your brain off and slice up enemies, just beware of the hype surrounding this one.... It's just a freaking toaster!

A beautiful game with solid gameplay, lush graphics and a mesmerizing soundtrack. The story is confusing at first; if you're a veteran anime lover it won't phase you at all but for others, androids dressed as sexy (and blind) maids and butlers living in orbit around a post-apocalyptic Earth might feel A BIT WEIRD in your first few years.

If you can sit through it though, the game gets increasingly rewarding as you progress and it's one of the few games that is actually fun to Platinum (Pun not quite intended). Definitely one of my highlights of this console generation.

I miss out this game in 2017, manage to pick it up during sales. And i have never regret playing it. The design, theme, music and storytelling is fantastic. Only less interesting part is the part where you go through the story as 9S which can feel repetitive.

Admittedly only did the one play through but it was pretty decent, especially the boss fights and stuff where you're constantly switching between different genres (top down shooter, side scrolling, 3rd person, etc).
Open world felt maybe a bit boring though. Would give an 8 but since apparently it gets better after the first play through, I'll give it a 9

Nier: Automata is an absolutely stunning experience. The music and atmosphere will instantly hook you as the deep and compelling story keeps you going. Although the overall narrative could've used a bit more direction, that doesn't take away from how otherwise magnificent this game is.

Platinum's best game by far. The story explores heavy themes with grace and nuance. The combat could stand to be a little more challenging, especially towards the end game. 9S's story route was somewhat of a drag to play, and A2's story in comparison was much too short for how fun it was.

About sidequests some should appear later when your level was higher because you can find strong enemies in some sidequests. The story is ok. Probably it must get better when you play this game the whole 5 times but I'm not sure. So for the moment the plot is ok. About gameplay is good, with some retro "starship" gaming. Nier: Automata is a spiritual successor to the original Nier released in 2008, its story taking place thousands of years after the 1st game. Some of Nier's characters and events are mentioned in Automata, but otherwise the new game is standalone. A long time before Automata's events, aliens conquered planet Earth, and the remnants of mankind were driven away from their home planet taking refuge to the Moon. Humanity then created androids to battle against machines controlled by the aliens, resulting in a never ending war that has been raging for thousands of years. Players assume the role of androids 2B, 9S and A2 who fight against the machines. The story is told in 3 short playthroughs called "Routes" and features a total of 26 endings (5 main and 21 "joke" endings which can be triggered by things like eating a poisonous fish that kills you). Route A tells the story from the point of view of android 2B. Then Route B tells the same story from the point of view of 9S, plus we are provided with more info on the machines' past and background. The final Route C takes place after Routes A/B and narrates the conflict between androids 9S and A2, where both try to end the war, leading to the final story endings. The game explores sci-fi themes such as planetary war, alien invasion, AI, robots, consciousness, self-awareness, etc. It's interesting and has its share of twists and turns, but it's a bit of a mess by the end.

Nier: Automata is an open world game with main missions and side quests, where hack n' slash and old-school shoot-em-up mechanics are implemented. You are accompanied by flying pods that can shoot enemies or do special attacks. 2B and A2 are straight forward melee fighters, whereas 9S is more of a hacker because he is a support unit. Hacking enemies is presented as playing an old-school arcade shoot-em-up bullet hell mini-game, and successfully beating the mini-stage results in dealing damage to the target enemy. The bullet hell mechanic is allso present in the enemies where both minions and bosses attack you by shooting multiple spheres in patterns along with physical attacks. Not only that, but the game often changes camera perspective and at times turns from 3rd person view into a 2D side-scrolling platformer, a 2D top-down vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up, and a top-down 2D twin-stick shooter. Variety is the name of the game in Nier: Automata.

There is also a DLC which lets you fight in an arena against the respective CEOs of the game's publisher Square Enix and the game's developer PlatinumGames. It's surely hilarious and breaks the fourth wall.

The game's soundtrack is awesome. There are plenty of melodies and songs that I can't forget. It's easily one of the best videogame OSTs out there. And the english voice acting is good.

Nier: Automata is not perfect, though. The enemy design is uninspired, with units looking like tin cans (at least these minions come in many shapes and sizes). The map isn't really a well designed open world like that of Horizon: Zero Dawn or other genre staples, more like a collage of different stages, and sadly there is an abundance of invisible walls. And then there are the performance problems. The engine used has optimisation issues that prevent the game from running smoothly. Whether on PS4, PS4 Pro or PC you can't lock at 60 fps and there is plenty of random stutter and hitches. Graphics look bland, and pop-in of geometry and shadows at close range is visible even to the untrained eye. And the latter half of Route C is filled with boring arena fights. All these negatives don't mean Nier: Automata is a bad game, actually it's a good one, but they prevent it from reaching greatness.

Overall, Nier: Automata is a great game even if it has some flaws. I definitely recommend it to every gamer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Completion: Endings A, B, C, D, E and a few extra ones on normal difficulty. 85% quest .

    Pros:
    - Great character design
    - One of the most innovative stories in years that only works within the medium. However, the more surprising parts of the game are less exciting if you have already played the original.
    - Great characters and character development - definitely some of the best in the medium. 9S stands out in particular.
    - Ending E is incredibly powerful and greatly synthesizes many of the themes presented throughout the game.
    - The narrative associated with the side quests are astonishing in how thematically consistent they are.
    - Battle system is a huge upgrade from the original. Although this is one of Platinum's weaker offerings in terms of the actual depth of combat, it serves its purpose and looks great.
    - Incredible soundtrack and voice acting. Overall, the sound direction is superb. The final credits song is a stand-out and might be my best track of the year.
    - Bullet hell parts are fun and stand out since they're so uncommon in modern games
    - A lot of cool ludonarrative tricks. Every single part of the "game" is also part of the narrative.

    Cons:
    - Awful map system. Although they do contextualize it within the game, still feels lacking.
    - Many parts of the game feel repetitive - particularly Route B. Although this is partially intentional, it doesn't make it any less boring to play.
    - Route C is underwritten. The narrative would have been greatly bolstered by just a little bit more explanation of what was going on. This is more or less true throughout the entire game, but it is critically lacking here.
    - Side quests are simple fetch quests.
    - Weapon system is poor. Few if any weapons feel significantly different from each other (only 4 main categories) besides from appearance. For a 40 hour game, greater variation in weapon type or weapon movesets would be very much welcome. Same basic principle applies to the pod weapons.
    - Many janky parts such as the millions of invisible walls littering the environment.
    - Environments are ugly. Resemble a last-gen MMO.
    - Traversing the world is very annoying before you can fast travel.

    Final Word:
NieR: Automata is a fantastic and unique experience, even more so if you have never played the original NieR. Although the combat and navigation can become repetitive and sometimes even frustrating, the incredible soundtrack, voice acting, lore, and narrative more than make up for it. Yoko Taro's voice truly shines through in this monumental title.

    True Score:

The combat is beautiful to look at, offering several combos and abilities, albeit a little too buttonmashy and a little too easy for most of the time.

The story involves the often told battle between mankind and machine, but it's the tone of the narrative that separates it from other movies and games.

The whole experience is wrapped up in a beautiful soundtrack that effectively complements the different situations of the game.

A must buy, if you're a fan of Hack and Slash and RPG with an interesting story to follow.

NieR: Automata is one of the closest a videogame has come to being a piece of art in my opinion. The story, visuals, style and music are all incredible and this is bolstered by being a really slick, challenging and fun game to play. Its pacing is a bit inconsistent, and this intrudes on the overall experience a little, preventing it from reaching the perfect score it's so near to.

The plot for this game is more than just a story - the philosophical nature of the world where robots and androids fight a war on behalf of other races presents so many deep, meaningful questions. The characters (mainly 2B and 9S) are also fantastic, and the overall experience is pensive, mournful and cathartic all at the same time. This is definitely one of the best-written games I've encountered in a while and is on par with some of the golden age Final Fantasies or Metal gear Solid's most impactful moments for storytelling. It's hard to talk too much without spoiling, but this is way deeper than any videogame has gone before, and I'm still thinking about the wider implications of the plot now.

Visually, this game is stunning. Its actual graphics may not be on par with Uncharted 4, for example, but instead NieR is grounded by a beautiful washed out pallet which extends from environments to menus to costumes. It's easily the most stylish game on PS4, sophisticated and thought out. The appearance of bright red lasers and purple explosions are jarring against the wreckage of utopia in which the game is set. Particle effects are brilliant during battle too, and the world was a joy to explore (something that is always recommended and rewarded).

Gameplay-wise, NieR is excellent. The battle system is aggressive, fast-paced and weighty (think Bayonetta) with more than enough customisable depth to make it varied. Lots of weapons, plug-in chips (upgrades) and chances to grind for levels are available, in this respect it's traditional RPG. Plug-in chips are difficult to get your head around but ultimately satisfying. The real place that NieR shines is its constantly-evolving gameplay styles. From hack-n-slash, bullethell, 2D platforming, space invader style shooters, on-rails shooters and overhead action, this game seamlessly blends so many different genres into one and the result is so captivating. Changes are frequent and plot-related, and always refreshing. Bullethell sections in particular are hectic and difficult, but so much fun. Side quests are basic but gratifying and almost always give you something to think about whether it be a minor character's motives, a relic of the old world, or a plot enriching detail.

The game's only flaw in my opinion is the pacing. It is designed to be played through multiple times from different perspectives to truly open up the wonderful story and characters, but the 2nd act in particular (while adding the gameplay element of hacking into the mix) is slow, and has a lot of recycled material. I see what the aim was story-wise, and respect and enjoyed this aspect, but in terms of playing the game, I was extremely put off by this. I was hesitant to return at times, but always found myself eventually enjoying it again. The third act is great, and worth the slog. But the mid-section slump is significant and stands in the way of me awarding this otherwise flawless game a 10. A game you love should be consistent throughout and while the other aspects in NieR mentioned are, the pacing change is so abrupt (if you want to do side-quests and get the full low-down on the plot) it is hard to ignore.

I can't recommend NieR: Automata enough, despite the pacing issue. It's a tough, engrossing and exhilarating world, perhaps a bit anime and melodramatic at points (not a bad thing), but the thoughts raised about artificial intelligence, humanity, fate and purpose are truly magnificent and unlike anything I've ever experienced. Get this game.

The story and characters all feel very fresh and interesting and it was fun uncovering what was going on in the story.
The combat is engaging and is not afraid to punish you for being lazy while still being entirely fair. It combines 3D action/brawling, side scrolling/platforming and shmup segments elegantly together along with a somewhat optiional deep RPG system. I found you could level up your character and use the standard weapons fairly easily without worrying too much about the minute details, but rest assured that if you like trying to fine tune your character with special abilities and weapons that the option is there for you. If you want to be a glass cannon or a mobile tank; it is truly versatile. The story reaches several shocking revelations as you play through the game several times, experiencing it in different ways and from different viewpoints. Very cool!
I wouldn't want to avoid talking about some of the aspects i thought were less then amazing. The graphics aren't anything to scream about. It was some wonderful art design but the graphics are mostly pretty simplistic. This is not the most important thing about a video game at all so this may not matter to you, but it's worth mentioning.
There is an 'open world' you explore in this game that ends up being a little tedious when you are reaching many hours of play as they tend to be linear and predictable. It's an open world but only in the barest sense. And you WILL be retreading these areas time and time again. If you choose to seek out the games many secrets and hidden treasures you will be scouring every nook and cranny and that is the point where this world does not QUITE hold up. However, it's perfectly functional so your mileage may vary with this.
Overall the pros far outweigh the cons and the unique voice, world, and storytelling of this game make it incredibly worthy of a visit. Most games don't aspire to anything near what this game was trying to accomplish in my humble opinion.

From the jump, the game makes it clear that it is not going to be like any other, as you whip between classic Astroid shooter to modern JRPG mechanics to even a mix of both while bashing your way through the unforgiving opening. The soundtrack enraptures from the very start, and might just be what ultimately makes Nier a classic. It's intense, it's tragic, and as the best JRPG's do, it completely knocks you out with the timely vocal pieces. The music accompanies the most successfully ambitious story in any RPG, and one of the best in gaming history. Like many before it, Nier centers around AI existentialism, and what it means to be human. It does so with a beautiful stroke of genius, as we follow androids and robots living in a post-human world, both beginning to realize that they are becoming more than the sum of their parts. The gameplay is robust and explosive, but the game struggles with the weighting of its leveling system in the later playthroughs. Perhaps Nier's biggest sin is that the path to the game's masterful ending is fraught with traps, and even I had to look up the proper ending on YouTube, despite 40+ hours of gameplay. Despite these flaws, Nier is passion personified, and a video game that others in the industry should aspire to. Expand

An open world hack and slash game that did not really need to be open world. Despite this, It's a fun ride with a good story and memorable characters.

    Story:

This game is a sequel to NeiR, a game that released on the Xbox 360 back in 2010 but if you are a newcomer you can get right into the story. It starts with a world run by machines. Humans live on the moon and have android go down and fight the machine to get the earth back. A team of androids, 2B and 9S, are fighting with several other teams. When 2B goes to take on a bigger threat, they uncover some clues that might explain what happened to the earth and may even lead to a solution on how to kill on the machines. The story is great, has a few twist and turns and feels complete and is very enjoyable to play through and find out what happens next.

    Gameplay:

A great mix of hack and slash and RPG gameplay. It's a fast and fluent game that runs at 60FPS. Framerate can drop below 20 FPS for a second or 2 in intense spots but other than that, it's fluent. The open world feels a bit unnecessary in this game since most of it is very linear. This game should have been linear or semi-linear just due to the nature of the game and the story progression. Not only that but the map system is often confusing and you will be scratching your head at points while being frustrated not being able to access the next part of the game. Besides FPS and the open world, the game has great combat and boss fights that make it worth it to get to the next part.

    Technicals:

This game looks great. The graphics are crisp and clear. Animations look stunning at 60 FPS. The open world as much detail (even if it is a bit empty at times.). Unforgettable soundtrack, boss music sounds incredible and gets you ready for a fight. No problems with the technical side of things.

    Final Thoughts:

If you love hack and slack games or anything from Platinum Games, I highly recommend this game at its full retail price. If the open world aspect sounds bad to you but you still want a great story and fun gameplay, wait for a price drop. 2 points were decided for the open world, confusing map system and some FPS drop but that should not deter you from playing this great game.

Playing as 2B, I found 9S's close attendance annoying and, at times, he interfered with gameplay (e.g. when trying to stand on top of a column). I felt the characters could have done with some transitional animation between walking and running but, since you spend most of your time dashing and sprinting, that's a fairly minor niggle. I also found the middle section a tad choresome sometimes, but it doesn't drag on and there's some great new gameplay involved. That's all I can think of to deny Nier: Automata 10/10. It's a truly great game: the story is magnificent, the combat is varied and tons of fun in and of itself, the visual presentation and soundtrack are equally beautiful, the upgrade paths are complex and satisfying... it all amounts to a deeply rich and rewarding experience and one I look forward to repeating on the Xbox, after the passage of time.

    Gorgeousness. 9/10.

At first, I was a little skeptical about the game. I’m not really sure why, maybe the previews for it turned me off or something, but it was definitely not on my radar. Then a friend recommended it with a very curious description: a story that can only be told in game format.

While I have a few minor nit-picks about things, I have to say that this is one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. It’s a unique feel in the characters and plot line, and a very unique take on incorporating gameplay with the game itself.

    Gameplay 9/10

The controls are fluid and responsive and a joy to engage with, though they take a little time to get used to. Part of the creativity of the game is also involved in them throwing you into lots of different game interfaces in quick succession.

There are multiple game modes - hack and slash, sidescroller-platformer, bullet-hell shooter, and puzzle-shooter. But they’re all done *really* well, and though sometimes jarring to switch back and forth, they all amazingly fit into a single gestalt.

I’ll only take off the point from an otherwise 10 rating due to a few messy things that could have been fixed without really altering the game, and all of them involve the map interface. Frankly, it sucks, it’s the one and only gameplay element that distracted from my suspension of disbelief.

    Creativity 10/10

I have to note how well they incorporate game plot and character elements into the gameplay. When severely damaged, the menus don’t look or work properly, your visual interfaces mess up, and you even lose the ability to do basic functions like run or jump. While frustrating, this is also very engrossing.

They also really play with your expectations heavily. The way you expect a game to play is not the way it plays. The way you expect the plot to turn out, it doesn’t turn out. It’s a walking, talking anti-trope, and it’s really, really disorienting. But that’s the point.

    Music 11/10

This music is absolutely stunning. It’s one of the best soundtracks in any game I’ve ever played.

I loved it so much that I spent as much money on the official soundtrack as I did on the game. Take that as proof.

    Visuals 10/10

The character designs are really well done. While the three main characters seem at first to have similar look-and-feel, they are clearly and strikingly different. They just flow as a unit well, even though they’re actually so different.

The backgrounds are gorgeous, and the world you interact with is lush and colorful… or not. There are several sections that are literally black-and-white, or whitewashed-out. The palette changes from area to area, and the lighting effects are excellently done - from metallic glare to rainbow effects on the edges of lens flare.

    Characters 8/10

While I have a couple criticisms for some of the characterization, I have to say that somehow, it still manages to pull it off. The two main antagonist twins are uber-simplified and suffer for it, I think. And both 2B and 9S change drastically in personality over a relatively short time period, which is a bit jarring… but… it still works.

You still feel for them in the hard moments.

    Plotline 9/10

    “Cyborg Hamlet”

It’s intricate, unexpected, tragic, toxic, heart-felt, and desperate. You don’t know where it’s going. You don’t even think you have any clue for very long. And yet, it weaves a tapestry as you go - the colors don’t show until you look at them in the rearview mirror. I only take off a point here because they needed to do a clearer job connecting what happened in the previous game to this one.

    Emotional Engagement 9/10

This is really a heartstring-wrenching tragedy of a play. And I say play because it evokes theater so strongly. It’s an interactive play, but not so much so that you merely are dragged along for the ride and have no effect.

    Replayability */10

If you have heard anything about the game, you probably know it has multiple endings and playthroughs. When you “win”… you’re less than a third done. So on one sense, it’s eminently replayable, because it’s frankly necessary. However, once you’re totally done, it feels different the second time. Difficulty */10 The game is a little too easy, on “normal” mode. And it’s way too hard on “hard”. Experimental Uniqueness 10/10 The combination of features in this game, and the willingness to experiment with unexpected character types, game-immersion techniques, intermixing of play formats, and a very, very non-disney-esque plot line, I have to give this a 10 for uniqueness and over-all. This will become a classic, it will influence the next 10 years of gaming.

Look, I've regarded this game as others have: weeb-trash, overrated, bland graphics, uninteresting gameplay. I watched the trailers and the gameplay during it's pre-release stages and I decided to skip it due to all the reasons listed above. Thankfully, I was recommended by multiple friends and convinced through some YouTube reviews to try this game out.
I am very much pleased to admit that I was wrong. Wrong about everything in fact. Due to some string of events, I went into a sort-of JRPG video game spree and I played games from Gravity Rush, Tales of Berseria, and Persona 5. My mindset beforehand was pretty negative towards the JRPG community. Considering that, I still believe this game is for a very specific type of gamer. Definitely not a casual play. If you consider yourself a lover of quality video game creativity, innovation, and imagination then I implore you to give this game a chance. Especially if you appreciate a story that requires some deep thought and pondering. The hype isn't for show this time. It deserves the praise. Once again, I ignored this game and believed it to be overhyped. I will take a leap of faith right now and say that perhaps over 50% of the negative reviews here on the site and across all other sites are due to them NOT PLAYING THROUGH ALL THREE "CHAPTERS" OF THE GAME. The game is NOTHING if it has been only playing through once. You miss practically 3/4's of the story because of that. Here is some insight: first playthrough (dubbed A) is the introduction of the story, it's world, and it's characters. Second playthrough (B) is some more exposure to the world; you begin to further grasp the scope and situation of it all. The third playthrough (C/D) is something entirely different and new. It is a big slap in the face. A big reveal. And the reason why this game is so hype-ridden. The final straw is it's "secret" ending E. If you think any of this sounds like a chore to go through it really isn't. The game, across all playthroughs, is the length of a standard RPG: 20-25 hours. Do yourself a favor and playthrough ALL of this game. Don't sell yourself short and believe that you played a poorly made game when in fact, you missed 75% of it.

Final remarks? It's great. It lives up to it's hype and it really is a "masterpiece" in gaming. It quite literally, surpassed all my expectations.

Soundtrack is amazing. Visual style is perfect. The story is deep and sad yet giving you a hope.
But all those words are pretty useless when describing this game separately because only in union they meld into this Masterpiece from true master of this century, named NieR: Automata.

Thank you, Yoko Taro, for giving me an opportunity to touch this piece of art.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very Enjoyable game to play, but I found some parts of it to be very boring/tedious:

    The Good:
    - Fun game play. Good animations, fluid movement, and good pace to combat. Although it is "hack n' slash" it still manages to stay entertaining.
    - Great characters/character design
    - Interesting/Unique story. Has good plot points as well as great story telling. Definitely complete the game to truly appreciate what the story offers.
    - For the most part... Amazing game design.

    The Bad:
    - The whole mid-game... but that's more "ugly" than it is "bad".
    - Poor level pacing via natural story progression. I found that i was under leveled for some parts of the game even though I believe I invested an adequate amount of time into experience farming. it ruined some of the pacing of story since I had to waste time leveling.
    - Not enough weapon variation as well as weapon attack variation. I mention this because you spend most of the game in combat, spamming the attack key. It would have been nice if there were more weapon attack animations as that would be more visually appealing to the player. It likely would have caused them to pay more attention to whats happening on the screen rather than just accepting that the character is performing the same 1 or 2 combos on repeat. This complaint is more targeted towards its " hack n' slash" roots. So it can be overlooked.
    - Some equips were too hard to upgrade
    - I hated the hacking. it was boring, tedious, and stressful. Not my cup of tea.

    The Ugly:
    - Wasn't a fan of the environment/setting of the game. I'm not a fan of "post apocalypse" settings. Constant gloomy atmosphere made it hard to play for long periods of time without losing interest in the game. However, I understand that this setting is a key point of the game as it supports the story. Changing the environment/setting would alter the game's mood/atmosphere and thus make it lose one of its biggest appeals. Nevertheless, I prefer games with a more lighthearted feel to them, and Nier definitely was not that.
    - Horrible Mid-game. Awfully boring and an absolute chore to play. I understand it provides more insight to the story, but I have to imagine that it could have been done a better way. Ruined the original mindset i had towards the game, and caused me to lose interest. With that said, I'll give credit where credit is due... The end game is fantastic. It makes a great attempt at fixing that which was broken with the mid game. However, not only was the end game too short to properly "hook" the player back in (after that dreadful mid-game), I also believe the damage that was done was too great for it to be totally fixed anyhow.

Overall, it's a game i would recommend to a friend... but i would also warn them of nuisances that await them.

    * The fact that 2b ans 9s being so affectionate towards eachother makes no sense, they have known eachother for like no time at all and aren't even supposed to being able to develop feelings.

The music is superb. In other video games the music is just like a shallow theme that plays in the background to keep some ambiance in it, in this game you notice when the music changes, it makes you pay attention to it, you can even close your eyes and enjoy just listening to it...

A game for thinkers, but also a game for gamers. The scenario and its execution are absolutely breathtaking. Combat scenarios seamlessly interact with and augment the narrative's philosophical themes. The gameplay is varied, and it is all done so well. Action-rpg blends with arcade shooter. The variation in gameplay, specifically the nostalgia for arcade/classic games evoked by many sequences, reflects the larger motifs explored by the game's narrative. What is artificial intelligence? What are fictional characters? What does it say about us that we enjoy the incessant combat of videogames and the constant pain of the characters within them? What does it say about me that I am playing the game? The narrative resonates so well with the actual experience of playing the game that a feeling of awe and surreality accompanies the entire experience.

All of this is not to mention the peerless musical score and on-point voice acting by the game's main characters. This is certainly the most eerie and engrossing game I have ever played.

On a final note, the graphics, especially the environmental textures, occasionally feel last generation, but the fact that you really won't mind only highlights the fact that this game is truly special. The desolation of the environment is what's important, and despite a lack of color overall, everything about the game's appearance makes sense and furthers the comprehensive experience the game offers.

Stick with this game. if you enjoy sci-fi exploring artificial intelligence, or if you just like videogames and are interested in a game that is fun to play while it interrogates philosophical questions raised by videogames themselves, you won't be disappointed. This blew me away, and I will never forget it.

Nier: Automata is, in my opinion, one of the most special games of its generation. Behind its appearance of being a typical action rpg you'll find a deep and complex game that through both narrative and sometimes gameplay presents the player with fundamental philosophical questions concerning the perception of self-being and the purpose of life.

The visuals, while they are not the most impressive you'll see in this generation, they certainly set the correct atmosphere for the game in its many scenarios, while always mantaining that feeling of desolation throughout them. While a few of the places you'll visit may be a little cliché (every game must have a "forest level", am I right?), every one of them is very different from each other, offering a great diversity in the world that Nier Automata takes place in.

Speaking of diversity, the gameplay of Automata is designed so every now and then the game switches up the way that you play it, with lots of sections that offer different gameplay styles. At one time you are traveling through an open field, at other you are fighting your way through 2D corridors, others you are shooting while flying a ship like an old-school arcade shooter. And in my opinion, the each different sections didn't overstay its welcome (although personally Im not a big fan of the shooting sections and those could really get tedious and long if they are not your cup of tea). When it comes to the combat itself, the way the combat works offers players a lot of options regarding the way they wanna fight. Diffferent weapons offer not only different stats, but different fighting styles as well. Playing as 2B you have two weapons equipped: one for light attacks, one for heavy attacks. You can equip any kind of weapon to light or heavy as you see fit, and that gives the player lots of freedom. With 9S you only have one weapon, but instead of a heavy attack weapon you can hack enemies, which will trigger a minigame in which you will have to shoot yet again (yay?) until you destroy the target and succesfully hack your enemy, which will deal damage, allow you to detonate it, or take control of it in some cases.

The story is great. If you haven't played the other Nier or Drakengarde games, worry not, for the plot of Automata works perfectly on its own and doesnt require you to know the previous lore of the franchise in order to understand what's going on. However, dedicated fans of the series will get more out of Automata's story, as there is a lot of references to the previous games and ties in on some plot points. As I explained earlier, this game through its narrative deals with deep questions regarding our existence and purpose in life, making it probably the most philosophical game you will ever find. The plot, while not hard to follow, is really deep for that reason. Characters are very unique and likeable. This is specially true for the protagonists of the game that you take control of as you play, and its surprising how much this game manages to make you, a human, feel empathy and an emotional connection to the androids that serve as main characters. Specially through the third arc of the story, this game will be a rollercoaster of emotions.

Finally the soundtrack. It works. It fits the atmosphere, it fills the silence. Nothing too memorable in my opinion, I never found myself humming the game's OST after putting my controller down (except for the Main Theme, "Weight of the World" which is absolutely a masterpiece, specially after finishing the story).

In sum, this is by far one of the best games I have ever played. It has something for everyone, and I think it's a must-play for the PS4. The only reason why I didn't give it a perfect score was the forgetable soundtrack, the overuse of shooting sections and the fact that it gets a little repetitive in the middle of the game (however, after completing ending B, the game starts a new story arc that really shakes things up and takes everything up to speed again).

This quickly became one of my favourite games of the generation without a doubt. If you're looking for a unique game, this is it. Recommend highly. A perfectly crafted game with one of the best soundtracks ever, followed up by excellent combat and a complex story that will have you invested in the characters. It has everything you could ever want out of a video game. Don't hesitate, just buy it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
