I made an account just to review this game. This is the best single player game I've ever experienced. It has the prequel stories of NieR:Gestalt and Replicant tied into it in ways that make sense, great art, amazing music, all the elements of an action game that made Devil May Cry and Bayonetta great, and some RPG elements in the form of leveling up and leveling your weapons. The immersion is there with or without all side quests done, and several times there are decisions you make that make changes to your experience of the rest of the game. Can't speak for the PC port, but the PS4 version is a solid 10. Expand

These are my favorite parts about the game. Everything else is still absolutely great. I enjoyed the game from start to finish. This game is the hidden gem of the ps4, a must play for everyone who loves these twisted mind stories.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is 100% "okay" and that's really the best thing I can say.

After playing for 30 hours, doing all the quests i cared to do (about 83%), doing the main 5 endings (ABCDE) and enjoying and hating aspects of it, i just thought that "this game was ok". Really, it was just okay, especially when there are so many flaws - both gameplay and story-wise - that just don't really make it that great.

For instance the combat is fun! Repetitive but fun, really REALLY repetitive but very fun, and I always loved using 2B for the fighting, which was smooth and easy to use but too bad the controls are utter crap and the lock on is awful.

You also get to control 9S in the second playthrough, who is a scanner (aka hacker) and can kill most enemies with ease making the combat easier against tough enemies. Too bad that in exchange for that 9S fights like ASS, having the worst and most unreliable combat ever that I had to rely on the pod's gun to do damage. And the hacking is also repetitive too - what a surprise!

The story is well done too: I had legitimate times where it surprised me and it had some very good scenes, especially the last endings.
I won't lie when the game tried its best it did impress me with some deep scenes and sad ones too but at the same time it's ruined by a LOT of scenes that try SO HARD to make you feel sad it was hilarious.
I wish I was kidding but that's actually how the game tries to make you feel sad, with forced scenes of death and dialogues ending with ellipses all the time.
The only thing missing was a sign saying "Feel something", which I did: an urge to laugh.

Some characters are well done too - I particularly loved Pascal and 9S (the start) - and I was legitimately curious to see how the game would end, but unfortunately most of the rest are either boring (2B) not well developed (Devola/Popola, Anemone, A2)) or just done there for that brief moment of sadness I was talking about (the random chats with your operator, quest related characters, etc).

And the story itself...it's really not unique: it's basically a story of how androids and machine try to emulate humans and how they learn the meaning of existing. I don't dislike that though because it's HOW you tell a story that matters, but here's my problem with it:

You can switch anyone with the binomial Android/Machine with anything and not much would change - besides the obvious stuff - and honestly there's not even much of that: the androids act like humans, the machines act like humans, everyone acts like humans...so why was it necessary to turn them into machines? It would've been more interesting if they were SLOWLY turning into humans, discovering feelings, having sadness, ANYTHING but they already know that stuff! They even say "Feelings are prohibited" because they KNOW feelings are a pain to deal with - which is true...WHICH IS WHY IT MAKES NO SENSE WHY ROBOTS WOULD HAVE FEELINGS, IT ONLY HINDERS THEIR ACTIVITY, AND IT EVEN SHOWS LATER IN A QUEST WITH PASCAL, YOU DUMB MORONS!
There is a reason why the goddamn terminator had no feelings: if he did he would be freaking out whenever he terminated someone!
In other words, this plot makes no sense and whereas they could've made some badass robots that start to learn what it means to have feelings, to slowly learn what it actually means to be human, including its weaknesses, but by giving them feelings right away they don't become more relatable: they just become annoying ****
I've met real women with bigger balls than 2B and 9S! I'm not exaggerating!

So...do I recommend it? Yeah sure: it's an okay game with good combat, a pretty decent story (which is more than can I say about Square Enix nowadays) and it has a good amount of pros and cons that beat each other out, making the experience equally balanced.

I guess what makes the game better is the music which is good (not a fan myself) and the voice acting is QUITE amazing, probably one of the best of latest times and helps following the plot better even during its hiccups.

But best game ever? not even close, at least for me, a spot taken for Berseria who not only made me sad for actual good reasons, it also had bits and pieces of existence too that were better explained and not too pretentious either.

Overall I can recommend, get it on a discount if you're curious and enjoy/hate it.
I did my part and I also got my saves deleted for others' sake because even if I didn't enjoy it, others might. That's the great thing about opinions.

I simply don't understand what's so special about it and frankly I still prefer the original Nier way more than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished this game, watching E ending. Since playing this game with too much expectation, I feel a little bit awkward when I realized this is the end. (I thought the factors people praise on this game just didn't show up yet even just before the ending.)

First of all, the scale is too small to call it the war of species. Of course it's ok if it's just for efficiency of directing, but it's too much small reminding of children's role play, which I can't be immersed.

It pursued open world game but I think totally failed. Every sub-quest wasn't interesting or intriguing because all they are too simple errands (at war?) and following rewards are not attractive at all.

What I really don't get it is why people admire this common Japanese subculture story that somewhere I've already seen. And the way of disclosing truths is not that dramatic. (It feels like when I saw how Assassin was originated at Assassin Creed Origin. Just... flat) And Why does 9S fall in love with 2B in the first place? Was there something between them that I don't understand? Or just for her nice butt like everyone praising this game?

I admit music is awesome, but graphic is ... sometimes it doesn't seem released in 2017. Quite many textures have very low definition with blur effect. But overall, the colors or atmosphere is quite emotional.

Yoko Taro is a name I will forever remember, for delivering a true masterpiece, my game of the generation, of any generation thus far that I've experienced. Nier transcends gaming, elevating it to an undescribable experience.

I'm trying to craft a review in the traditional sense to be objective and rational, to state the pros and cons like I normally do, but it's beyond that. I'm listening to Keiichi Okabe's amazing music (Weight of the World) while typing this and I cannot tell you, dear reader, the number of times his music brings me goosebumps, tugging at my heartstrings, full of melancholy, hope and so hauntingly beautiful.

I wish everyone in the world could play this. This has to be experienced, not watched. It engaged multiple sensory experiences in me, I can't even begin to explain it. I didn't even realize I played 50hrs of it at the end. I just deleted it to make space for Red Dead Redemption 2 but immediately regretted it. Never has a game left a gaping hole in my heart after finishing it. I'm playing Prey as my next game in my playlist but I cannot bear to go on. My mind, my heart, is still in Nier's desolate and heartbreaking world. I need time to recover.

I am regretting so much not buying this Day One, and not getting the Collector's Edition. I'll be buying anything with Nier Automata on it; books, art, vinyl, music, everything. The newly released book by Yoko Taro in English will be in my mail today and man I cannot wait to experience Nier's story again.

I implore you, play Nier Automata. Experience it for yourself. You'll be in tears at the end, the true end.

The most obvious complaint is how incredibly ugly this game looks (at least on base PS4 where I played it). If you played something like Horizon Zero Dawn prior to this it looks like it's a generation behind visually. And still the framerate dips at weird instances.
My second complaint is the story which is supposed to be great but i didn't get it at all. The "first" ending feels very rushed and i was shocked by how little was done with the main characters and villains. I then dove into the new game plus content where a lot of stuff is fleshed out more but even after getting the ultimate ending i still don't feel like i understood the story. Sure, lots of stuff happened but the why is missing for me, as if i skipped through half of the game. That's why I enjoyed the side quests much more especially when they were little self-contained stories. The combat is really weird but mostly good. There is depth to the role-playing elements and the music is ok.
Overall a good Action-RPG with sub-par visuals and a disjointed and confusing story

So yeah, the game is not perfect, but it carries a weight that I cannot ignore. I wish I could delete my memory and play it again blind.

There was no auto-save which is annoying at the start, while your trying to learn controls, but later on there is so many opportunities to quick save, it wasn't too bothersome.

The open world was interesting but i think the questing aspect would get really boring after a while, i was mainly focusing on the main story line which kept the pace of the game going with awesome cinematic scenes and boss fights to keep things interested and keep me entertained.

The story was compelling enough to keep me playing until the end, overall this game is for people who like games like DMC slasher type games and games with an anime style and interesting story and big boss battles.

One thing I really disliked was the death. if you use all your options against an enemy and you die, once you're back you'll have 0 potions. How can you survive the fight this way?

I felt difficult in understanding the gameplay, it's not very well explained, as the developer really wanted to show everything as an android program. The hack and slash action is beautiful, but I found it limited. I've played several hack and slash games, and this is not my favorite. DmC Reboot for PS4 is a better option if you're looking for action, and NieR Automata is a smoother option.

I only played the Route A and had other 3 endings (short ones). I really wanted to play the Route C but I couldn't find enough material to teach me how to do it, and didn't feel like going over the game again (didn't feel it was worth it).

Nier automata is one of the best games I have ever played in my 15 years ( i am 28 years old) as a ¨gamer¨ the lore/plot is top tier, worthy of 10/10 without a doubt, the combat gameplay is fast and enjoyable (60fps!!) you cant get bored playing as 2B*, the music is gorgeous is one of the best OST in the history of games (maybe i am overrating it. . . .but i doubt it. . .) i cant express with words how amazing is the music in the game, there are only 2 ¨bad things¨ about nier utomata:
one is the graphics, that are kinda lame for being released in 2017, but is worth for having 60 fps on Ps4.
the second one has a spoiler:
the game has 3 principal routes, A, B and C, A and C are top tier and worth all the time you can spend in the game, but route b. . . . you play as 9s he´s clearly not a fighter so the combat gameplay gets from 10/10 to 3/10 (is like being in heaven and then fall to the ground!) is really bad but to get route C you have to pass route B . . . so the game gets boring. apart from that, the lore revealed in route B worth the whole route. you cant get disappointed with the game if you haven't played it go and buy it is amazing!

I originally skipped Automata because I just thought it would just be a stupid game about a robot in a short skirt. Never have I ever been so wrong in my life, the story for this game was down right amazing and the soundtrack was down right chilling and gave me goosebumps during certain scenes. I don't want to give anything a away but the twists and turns of this game will have you holding your controller in your hand and just staring at the screen in shock and awe. Theres not much else to say about this game, go and buy it right now and you will not regret it.

On a less positive note I do feel the only fan service thing of the game is a bit ridiculous given the atmosphere of the world and the seriousness of the plot the fan service really has no place in the game and originally made me skip it. However do not make the same mistake I made, go buy it.

I hold FFX to a high standard and I believe Automata is better if not at the same level of FFX in terms of story and soundtrack

I cannot stress enough how imperative it is to see this game to the end to really understand everything that is going on.

It does have its faults for e.g. the button mashy combat with little variety in moves and facing robots for the entirety of the game doesn't sound like the best type of enemy variety but with a story that packs this much of a punch, you would be doing yourself a disservice to toss this to the side because of it. Its variety of playstyles that ranges from games from the 80s and 90's up to modern-day makes up for the combat though.

This game is a masterpiece that will make you go on an emotional rollercoaster that is unlike any game I've ever played. Going through subject matter most critically acclaimed directors wouldn't dare attempt to approach.

Ok now to the best thing about the game, the combat it’s satisfying simple and at the same time complex, the leveling up system and the many options available to upgrade are all great and fun. The open world and quests aren’t huge but they do their job and are quite entertaining sometimes. Humans have fled from the machine infestation to the moon, and it is up to YoRHa to make the earth omce again a hospital place. The story on paper, is very simple, but once you dive in deeply into the narrative being told her you find yourself questioning a lot of what seems to be a mystery in our life. God, life, death, love, beauty, fear, despair, conflict; all of these and more are subjects that the game tackles either subliminally or explicitly, and its beyond extraordinary the way this game handles these several sensitive topics. Make sure to play through all the routes to get the full experience though, endings A to E are the main endings that YOU MUST play for the real experience. Gameplay wise, it features multiple perspectives and gameplay elements that correlate together seamlessly, sometimes the game is a hack and slash rpg, other times its 2D platformer, other times its a hacking simulator. You might be confused with all these thinking that sounds horrible but trust me it is the absolute opposite. It all just works astonishingly here with little to no flaws and absolutely no disruption to your immersion. The soundtrack is hands down the best OST you'll ever hear in a video game ever and it'll trigger your goosebumps like no other in a very good way. If you still haven't, please get this game and give it a try, you won't regret it. (Once again play through all the routes it's extremely important)

Cons: Only 4 weapon styles, no autosave (not usually problematic, but is a hassle if the game crashes, which it sometimes does), some grindy element to 100% it.

But all in all it is amazing. If you're looking to get completely absorbed by a great story that leaves you asking yourself complex questions, this is the game for you.

I really like the heart breaking story with a small light of hope in the end. The music itself is really a masterpiece even if one didn't play the game. The battle process sometimes gets a bit overwhelming with too many special effects going off, but is nevertheless enjoyable.

Great game, that gives you a lot of surprises. Graphics are outdated though, more like ps3.
But characters and mechanics make game pretty good.
Of course 2B is pretty and sexy character with her own charisma. Game definitely has a Soul.

By no means a perfect game, the thing is riddled with bugs and technical deficiencies, it shows that it is indeed a port. and little was made to optimize it for pc. you have to do a lot of things before it is playable.
but man did the effort i put into playing it was worth my while.

There are also shoot-em-up style battles and something that could be best called as twin-stick shooter. The controls are solid and most deaths are due to player's mistakes, though it won't happen very often in my experience. The graphics are okay, I understand that there's a theme but it's very monochromatic and especially hard to read if you are playing on a moderate sized television and further than a few metres away, as is usual in console gaming; it's all light brown on dark brown or vice versa. Music is interesting, it has a lot of tracks with vocals that probably try to convey emotional meanings, I am still on the edge whether it's more disturbing and odd than atmospheric Expand

It's a good game. By all means. I just have one little issue with it. WHAT THE HELL IS SHE WEARING??? The main character, a thicc android, has ass n' boobs hanging out at ALL TIMES. She wears borderline fetish gear, with a much too short dress, garters, and fishnets, and the only thing managing to keep this game as M rated, is a VERY thin strip of white cloth, barely covering her genitals, and wedged between her asscheeks (and her uhh, "Lips" as much as I hate to say it). There is one other uniform in the game, and it's a ridiculous suit of armor, requires very specific story choices, and takes about 30 hours too reach. The DLC has a "revealing outfit"(as if the default one isnt revealing enough) which is one thigh-high, and a nightgown.

Everytime you run, jump, or climb a ladder, between wind picking up her dress, and some crazy "coincidental" camera angles, you get your camera pointed directly at her exposed caboose, and numerous cutscenes show you ass and cameltoe.

and don't you dare tell me this is empowerment, or story accurate. This is the same as Quiet in metal gear, or the female armor in monster hunter. Japanese games tend to not treat women the same way as western games. That's it. One of the devs even said he solely chose it cause it's hot.

It's not. It's cringey. It's like watching a Tarantino movie, but it's ALL footscenes. Like "come on bro? have you no shame". I don't honestly care that much about feminism or things like that, and I don't care if someone objectifies a fictional person, but it's ridiculous that the devs force us to stare at that BS. Grow the **** up. It's greasy.

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
