Apr 3, 2018For most of my time spent playing Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, I loved the beautiful world and engaging combat - the core of the game. But every once in a while, everything would grind to a halt and I'd have to deal with the overworld strategy mechanics that feel poorly integrated. Luckily, this sequel has enough great moments to overcome those annoyances.

Apr 17, 2018Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom intensifies the action in its JRPG foundation, mirroring some of Level-5’s best work instead of leaning more heavily on the charm of Studio Ghibli. It’s resulted in a game I continue to enjoy a great deal and a desire for Level-5 to distance itself even further from the animation giant to get a peek at what the developer can do, again, when completely uninhibited in any way.

Mar 19, 2018Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is a game that is built on extremities. Its weaknesses are extremely flawed, but its strengths are profoundly great. The story and characters are woefully brought down by such uneven pacing, which is unfortunate given the relevant commentary that is sprinkled throughout.

Mar 19, 2018As a successor the game definitely improves on a couple of aspects whereas other elements are not realized as well. Both graphically and in terms of content you definitely won't be bored anytime soon. Boss fights are great fun and the combat system in general works really well, although it does rely a bit much on hack 'n slash. Strategy therefore takes a backseat which is a shame. Another point of concern is the framerate which can be somewhat unstable at times.

Mar 19, 2018Ni No Kuni 2 is a sweet-tempered and attractive RPG with a strong castle-building mechanic, but it's dragged down by a jarringly ugly overworld, mandatory fetch quests, and a lot of padding. It's a pleasant throwback for fans of the genre, but it ultimately fails to meet the high bar set by other big-budget JRPGs.

Mar 19, 2018The potential was there for Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom to be a big improvement over its already solid predecessor, but instead of focusing on one new thing and doing that well, it doesn’t keep anything that worked and gives us several modes that could’ve been great but all have major issues. It’s not a bad game, but certainly not on par with the original and does little well enough to make it stand out in a pretty big sea of PS4 RPGs.

Mar 19, 2018It’s a game where I always knew what I was doing and why, and, more importantly, I enjoyed doing it. Revenant Kingdom isn’t the Howl’s Moving Castle game I’ve always dreamed of. It’s something much better.
