A good run with a favorite weapon perks things up, but having beaten all the available bosses and only unlocking access to the third tier of goods, doesn’t leave me pushing to find out what else is there. It’s a little gripe, and one that ultimately only detracts from the game once you’ve definitely gotten through it. That aside, Neon Abyss is an absolute joy. Having put plenty of times into other games like this, Neon Abyss is the first where it felt like the deck was stacked equally between the enemies and the player. Sometimes, the random swings go the enemies’ way, and you find no bombs, no keys, and die to spikes while making what should have been a super easy jump. Other times, the screen is a solid wall of enemy eating fire and you are its master, leaving gods to cry and shudder in your wake. I like those runs.

A deliriously entertaining mish-mash of roguelike platform shooter, mini-games and Pokemon style mechanics, if Neon Abyss feels like Roguelike Shooter 2.0 - that's because it is.

Borrowing from greats like Binding of Isaac and Dead Cells, Neon Abyss throws every type of weird ability and gun imaginable at players, making for a roguelike not lacking in substance but strangely missing a touch of style.

Neon Abyss may not be a revolutionary title, but it offers tons of fast-paced fun and despite its minor technical issues, it's a great experience that shouldn't be missed.

Yes, it’s yet another rogue like, but this one does some interesting things, like the way it generates the dungeons. It’s fun and dynamic, and it’s definitely worth your time if you like this type of game.

Neon Abyss combines fun running and shooting mechanics with decent rogue-like mechanics and puts it all in a quirky setting. We like it a lot.

Neon Abyss is colourful, bright and a lot of fun. While I found a lot of the room layouts and levels a tad repetitive, there is enough there to keep you entertained. The mini-games and weapons are great. It looks good, sounds awesome and will find a home in any rogue-like fans gaming collection.

Ruthless, smashing and a little haphazard like many of his counterparts, the 2D shooter by Veewo Games and Team17 finds its figure above all in an original dungeon development system and, over distance, capable of following somewhat heterogeneous approaches to the game. It is only regrettable that, in the long run, experience tends to recycle a few situations too much, removing from progression that little bit more freshness that, given today's playful competition, would certainly not have spoiled.

Neon Abyss really shines when you you have unlocked enough upgrades to experience the carnage in full.2 Getting to that point, however, can feel like a long, hard slog. If you’re up for the challenge, persevere and this will offer you a dense, addictive experience that you’ll keep coming back to. [Issue#179, p.80]

Neon Abyss is a fun, fast-paced twist on the rogue-like genre with a solid core gameplay loop. Although it brings new ideas to the table in the form of collectible eggs, and it has a good variety of weapons, enemies and synergies, it's not without its drawbacks. Performance issues, the lack of the genre's typical dodge button, and the chaotic room design all prevent Neon Abyss from being a must buy title.

If Enter the Gungeon, Contra, and Gunstar Hero’s were all gene spliced in a laboratory then Neon Abyss would be that life form. Great gunIf Enter the Gungeon, Contra, and Gunstar Hero’s were all gene spliced in a laboratory then Neon Abyss would be that life form. Great gun mechanics that play with physics and any pre conceived notion you may be expecting. Not to mention character specific abilities and quirks that can out right change the game experience making each new choice or idea feel fresh and engaging! Full Review »

Neon Abyss is just fine – it is a traditional rouge like that doesn't do anything particularly spectacular to stand out from the crowd. I can't recommend the game if you haven't played Isaac or Gungeon, but if you really need a new rouge like, Neon Abyss is fine. Full Review »
