this game is a shame to the nfs franchise. ALways night driving, DRM, Rubber banding, ridicoulous characherts and other annoying stuff. The only good thing about this game is that it manage to feel a little bit like nfs.

Why would this not pause the game so you could read it. Example if your out running away from the cops and you get a pop up saying u should out run the cops but crash and get busted because you can no longer see your screen thats ridiculous. It takes you like 20 mins to get from your garage to a race. Tho you can jump to your garage easily it is not that easy to get back to the missions. Heres an example of one of my races which frustrated me. I was winning the race but because the track changes so much you must pay close attention to your mini map, I hit a wall returned to game after the crash and was instantly crashing again without any reason. 2 crashes in one crash not even sure why. So I had no chance to catch up to first player even tho I only made one mistake. I couldn't even find that same race to replay it. I just have to accept coming in second instead of being able to replay my last race or something. Also I have tried a lot of games with drag racing and this was by far the worst version I have ever tried. I try and shift up and it doesn't shift properly. I find myself either over shifting up too many gears or not shifting at all and staying in first. It was a really bad idea to use second joystick to shift. Also had to leave one of my games because someone trolling me just kept trying to crash into me constantly so I couldn't even get to my missions. I used to love the old need for speeds and was really hoping this would be closer to the old underground series which it was minus a few main important details the old games were very playable and this is not. I usually get annoyed by something within the first 10 mins of playing and have to shut it off. I feel like there was a lot of potential. I hope the next one is more like the classics tho the customizing in this game was really good too. As well as the concept of the story mode, being a part of the conversation was pretty cool maybe it would be sweet in vr as well. Expand

Now that on itself doesn't hold me back but the problem is that the EA servers are crap and loose connection frequently, this results in the player being booted from the game and well not able to play at all....

First i thought it was my ISP but no other game ever gives me any issues with online play only this title

i would understand it IF i really wanted to play online but i can't even finish the "story" mode because of disconnection issues.

My advice: STAY FAR away from this game even if it is in the discount rack or hell for that matter given to you, it simply aint worth it to try to play it

this and only this makes me hate this game everything else is well just as it should be, nice cars nice driving pretty decent handling nice graphics.

tho all that doesn't make up for the disconnection issues i am returning this game and never want to see it again

Good god this game sucks. To demonstrate how this game should've been, I will compare it to Need for Speed Most Wanted 2005. The cops in this game are broken and boring. You don't engage in long enjoyable chases, instead you get pulled over for doing 60 -70 mph. Again NFS most wanted does it perfect and this game does the exact opposite of that. Next the story. I hate to use this word because it's so overused, but good god the characters and dialogue is so god damn **** CRINGEY! You feel no attachment to the characters, there not interesting, and there acting is atrocious. It all feels very faked and forced. But more importantly the gameplay. NFS most wnated has great control and the turning is precise and intuitive. However in this bag of **** the turning is awful. You just need to play it for yourself. I can best describe by saying when you go to turn it takes 2 seconds for your car to start turning. For a game with so many tight turns that require great control this game just flat out ****s the bed. Not to mention the races become way too **** and difficult and you don't feel satisfaction when you beat them, instead you're still **** pissed off. The difficulty spikes are ridiculous. And overall the only good thing I can say about this game is that the car customization is pretty darn good. Other than that, it's just a good old fashioned ****ty game, just like all the other recent NFS. Except this is the worst. Expand

Expand

Unquestionably a failure part. My main claim will be to physics. It is unfortunate that EA forces all its studios to develop games on Frostbite. This engine is not suitable for racing. It comes to the fact that on some machines it is impossible to travel. And it seems that such a fate awaits Payback. EA killed the legendary series.

Starting the game you encounter its most annoying trait, the characters. Right off the bat you can tell that this is what youth/car/tuning culture looks like from the perspective of some clueless older person who thinks that this is how things roll. It takes itself seriously while its laughably bad. Some of the characters are obnoxious while the rest are just mediocre. Thats not to say I do not enjoy campy FMVs in games. C&Cs are good fun and a nice reward for progressing through the games. They are bad in a good way. But in NFS's case they are bad in a bad way. Also A minor gripe here, they Called NFS2015 a reboot, which for this franchise makes absolutely no sense at all.

When it comes to technicals, NFS impresses with great sound all around, while music is a matter of taste. Graphics are also excelent with amazing car models, spectacular vistas and mesmerising wet effects and reflections. With all that been said I'm not really fond of the fact that its always night or dawn(but only when you enter in specific areas), and Im annoyed that its always rainy and humid. I can deal with always being night, but I would prefer more varied weather. If not at least it could be made just dry. Lastly it seems that the game requires a good hard drive. My 7 year old HDD cant keep up to the point that the map might partially load and going on that "ghost" part of the map I fall through the map. This however does happen in specific areas. So, at the end of the day I'm not really sure. It also happens way too often. Couple this with the fact that you have to endure the all the intros and then deal with seriously awful loading times

When it comes to gameplay and features I think the game does a poor in physics and how tuning affects your car. Driving feels tangible and that you can affect things with tuning at first, however it takes extensive tuning and upgrading to make a car drivable, and even then It's not always a satisfactory result. Another thing is that I feel that there isn't a great deal of variety when it comes to body customisation(especially in later high end cars). The marketing of this game was all about it, but it fails to properly deliver on that end. I also find the available car list lacking. The police is also not that difficult to evade. In fact you might actually have to chase the cops to get what you want. One other gripe I have with the game is the UI. For starters there is no mouse. You can't use it. And then there is the menu. Why do devs like making their menus all over the place?! It's form over function basically. Linear menus, please!

The last couple issues I have with the game and the ones that steal the most points is the online requirement and the support. Since you can work it alone without interacting with other players and even disabling playing online(which is basically how I roll), it's inexcusible to have to be online all the time, especially when you cant even pause the game. My own connection is not without its issues and occasionaly the lines are down(more often than not, on inapropriate moments). And then, no NFS for you, honey. And I wanted to close with the support. Surely enough NFS2015 was updated several times, but there was not much in the way of new content. There were only three new cars(free, mind you, but still), and they sould've be more. The same goes for potential new areas and possibly even closed race tracks. The world feels small. More needed to be added and things needed to change(such as the online requirement), but alas the last update was in late April 2016.

I really hope PAYBACK will be better.

As a visual experience, Need For Speed is awe-inspiring, with photorealistic graphics that make the world and cars so real that you will not believe your eyes, and you can explore the entire city at your leisure. But NFS disappoints in every other department. The story mode is lame, the cutscenes with the millennaial stereotype characters (and their incessant phone calls) are insufferable, it's constantly night which gets really boring after a while, the cop chases are aggravating and punishing and the tuning, while certainly very addictive and rewarding, is not as easy as it should be due to the need to rack up tons of money. It's certainly a visually extraordinary game, the races are decent enough and you can buy and decorate a dozens of awesome cars, but this game lacks a heart and soul. After all the hype this game received when EA announced that they were going back to the Underground era, particularly focusing on the customisation culture and story, does it live up to it? Not really.

The whole idea of requiring online to play is a simply farcical move, games like this thrive being played offline, alone or with a friend/family beside you. Of course, they have let go of the latter option years ago in spite of pure laziness. This mandatory internet connection that has been done is so users wouldn't need to update it periodically I presume. What does this mean for the longevity of this title then? Once the servers are gone, this game is history. They don't care about the nostalgia this game could create in the later years. Even then, what if my internet goes down? Unplayable once more. That's because they knew this game wasn't going to be great.

It really, really isn't great. For a game that garnered a lot of attention because of the return of deep car customisation, the game quite literally centers around deep car customisation. The soundtrack in this game cannot be altered as well as the controls, so when both is put together having the skip track functionality only triggered by the L3 button, it highlights how diabolical this problem is. Did they not realise the left analogue stick is also used to steer the vehicle? It's a recipe for destruction when I drive at high speeds. Not being able to configure either functionalities to my desire, especially the latter, makes me feel angry and really frustrated. They do more harm than good, genuinely counterproductive if they were going for simplicity. Pausing is also unavailable in the game too, self-explanatory in the sense that it is only playable online. This new culture these developers have started since Rivals in efforts to make their games more realistic is just pitiful. In actuality, all it achieves - and I'm sure they'll keep it in the future - is irritating the heck out of us gamers when we need to take time out for something potentially urgent.

The problems haven't stopped there. No way. The infinitesimal car limit the developers placed in the garage, is nothing short of laughable. I couldn't believe it when I realised I hit the limit so quickly. A maximum of 10 cars - what a shambolic figure. Again, do they not think about the longevity of the game? Its main selling point as I've said before is customisation, so obviously possessing huge car collections is very much inevitable for a lot of gamers, including me. I put hours into each of these cars to make them rock aesthetically, so to quickly reach the ceiling and be forced to trash them because of this tiny limit makes me shudder, almost in a state of cringe. There's over fifty different cars in the game, give the user a freaking choice whether they want to hoard them or not. Do they really think gamers enjoy trashing cars that they've put effort in modifying over and over again just to barely fit in their next target car? They have no excuse for this. Saving hard drive space on the overall game is not a valid reason - a few gigs to push up the car limit to maybe 25 to 30 would suffice. Nothing short of an abysmal decision by the developers.

The story isn't as cringy as a lot of the folks here are making it out to be, I mean it is sub-par but I saw that coming from a mile away. It is okay. The calls are really annoying though when I don't pick them up the first time - a way to mute them in the options bar would help. The climax of the story however is incredibly forgettable. Leaves a massive patch of emptiness in me, honestly.

Positives include the overall gameplay, it is pretty sound so I'm not sure why the others here are moaning about how difficult it is to control the cars. I can't find many problems with it. Tearing streets down with raw speed during free roams are also cool, especially with the night settings carved and shaped beautifully by the gorgeous graphics. It doesn't need to be raining all the time though. Hurts some of the authenticity of the gameplay. Customisation is also fantastic, plenty of things to do again just like the days of NFS Underground and its successor. Body kits, vinyls, the game is stacked full of them. Only issue here is that the availability of the installations need to be more consistent over all the vehicles, being unable to change something as simple as the headlights and taillights for some of the cars with all due respect, is quite annoying.

Tuning also plays a bigger role in this game than its predecessors, it impacts the performances of these cars a lot more than before. Mostly good, I really like the significant effect it has on the driving mechanics. My gripe with this is being unable to tune anything related to the speed of the cars. Acceleration and top speed are two key components I feel should have been tuneable in the game.

Function wise, the worst NFS I've ever played. Elsewhere, there are positives to take from.

The only two things that are not completely horrible but nothing worth mentioning are graphics, which are kinda okay but lack a fluent presentation due to the stupid framelock and the customization IF you mean color and decal customization, because for most cars there are like 2 or 3 parts that can be changed at max.

This really is the successor to the Underground games I've wanted for the longest time. 10/10 from me, even if there's not another underground style game for another 10 years I'll be happy knowing I've got this to come back to rather than the really graphically dated NFSU games.
Just among all the complaints and poor reviews I thought I'd throw this out there as I was really on the fence about even trying it after reading them. But really, for anyone not sure but considering it, if you were a big fan of the NFSU games I really recommend not missing this one.
i5 2500k and gtx750 and it runs quite well on low with TAA (still pretty) and no bugs so far with this hardware for reference.

Ghost games did impressive with the game. The visuals look almost realistic with the car models, cop chases are more reasonable, and customization is back in a big way. However there are minor fps drops which are really not as impactful and the game is indeed online but there is not much issues other than my internet.

However there are minor fps drops which are really not as impactful and the game is indeed online but there is not much issues other than my internet.

The game uses FMV (Full Motion Video) for the Cutscenes even though they are corny but they were never meant to be serious. You can sometimes understand what there intentions are. The FMV Cutscenes are also meant to be for mission expansion.

A.I. rubber banding is indeed involved with the game. The A.I. cars meant to keep up at your speed so if you want to play with a crappy Volvo, you may possibly win a race.

Missions are straight forward. Sprints, Circuits, Time Trials, Drift Trials, Drift Races, Gymkhanas.

The game is online and I am somewhat disappointed since sometimes my internet just can't handle it sometimes.

Eddie is in the game as well and you can earn his car for free if you beat him. Manual transmission is back and even though I dont use it, I'm pretty sure would love to use it.

Customization is outstanding. You can customize the front bumpers, back bumpers, body kits, side skirts, rims, tire treads, exhaust tips, bonnet hoods, splitters, trunk lids, diffusers, front fenders, back fenders, headlights, backlights, window tint, color, vinyls, preset wraps, and soon to come "neon lights".
Customization is the most realistic kind, only with aftermarket brands. Some cars have lots of customization, some have little, and a little have not at all. There are 53 cars in the game but the objective of the cars is perfecting not collecting. The cars also are built inside the game. Your customized car can be in the cutscene.

The career is split into 5 ways to play. Speed, Style, Build, Crew, Outlaw. The main elements in Need For Speed. With real life icons and actors who look up to these people.

Police chases are not as aggressive as what was in NFS Rivals but more fairer, less buggy and more playable. Roadblocks, spike strips, and the actual cruisers feel more realistic and fun. Some roadblock slow you down but you still pass them, while roadblocks made with cement blocks and rhino units are impossible to pass unless you find an extra road. The pursuit levels come into 5 levels. You can simply pay a fine and get the pursuit over with but that's not as fun. You need to pester them enough in order to get on with the pursuit. While starting in a pursuit, you are chased by 1 cop, but overtime you will be chased by a few more. The largest amount I've seen was 7 and trust me cops aren't as easy to get ride of at a decently customized ride. Unlike other games where is easy to destroy some low level cars, trying to do that is almost impossible. Just don't try to take 'em out you may get busted.

    Pros:
    Surreal Graphics
    Awesome racing
    Simple story line
Easy to learn hard to master
    The ultimate return
    Amazing sounds

    Cons:
    Internet Problems

The city of Ventura Bay is a beautiful local. There are tons of places to explore on the map and each section of the city feels unique and vibrant to explore.

Sometimes EA Games releases a new series of NFS game which is not as good as previous one and this is the case. This is an attempt to add Underground style to Rivals and that's it. I didn't like the story, too naive and the scenes are pretty boring. Anyways this is something I play right now waiting for the new one.

Story mode means: someone calls you "OMG you are great, let's drive together".... over and over again.
Actors are the best of the game, they deserve few Oscars.

Brilliant game, epic graphics and this atmosphere... like from oldschool Need for Speed's! Finally this is what i want in this series. Tuning, night illegal racing, and nice storyline. This is one of the best NFS from series.

This is probably too late to be viewed by anyone but ah well

Need for Speed is a reasonable return to form for the franchise, the modding is back and you can now create a bespoke car as ever. you can stance your car as well as stick decals where you want. A nice addition is the changes in sound you'll experience for different exhausts etc. The story is almost no existent and the

The story is almost no existent and the characters and cut scenes are cringy as hell and you'll constantly be bombarded with phone calls from the story chaps.
The world is fairly small and I feel like I'm always racing the same routes.
The game is online only which is a nuisance.
Frostbite graphics tip top but NFS seem to be obsessed lately with rain covered cars?
    Overall a mediocre experience.

OMG, what a let down. Where to start
    - Car customisation is weak - you can work with the cheaper cars, but higher up its.....theres nothing
    - Frostbite engine is a fantastic engine but they opted it for it to be constantly raining with little bursts of daylight. What tropical rainforest did they destroy to build a city where its always raining - The acting - OMG - Cops, seriously, too

    - The acting - OMG
    - Cops, seriously, too easy or too random, you can have the slowest car and you've lost them within 10 seconds and sometimes they appear out of nowhere. Ive had to chase cops just to get them to chase me.
    - Getting called by for example Spike to meet up, the same Spike you're currently racing
    - RUBBERBANDING AI - I can crash at the start and still catch up, AI can crash at start and still catch up

My final point: Buy The Crew, it is so much better, with better customisation and will also have a Ferrari F40 soon via an update.

Need for Speed is a well-wrought game, full of interesting features, albeit without many fresh ideas. However, it is prone to deliver most of the gamers in the uncomfortable arms of boredom sooner than later, although it is bound to satisfy the hardcore fans.

The latest Need for Speed feels old in every aspect. The driving model, the AI, the story and the characters, the environments – all of it is simply poor. [13/2015, p.68]

Need for Speed’s decent feel of driving and nice tuning options don’t amount to much when coupled with harsh rubber banding, boring environments and a terrible forced story mode. [Dec 2015]
