    The game has some redeeming qualities in the presentation and graphics. Gameplay is cartoonish garbage. Nothing makes sense. Shot meter is impossible, Butt steals are still regular, people can still reach and intercept the ball with their back faced towards the ball, centers can chase down point guards, court is too small. Just garbage.

    Introducing unskippable ads a month after release is the worst thing. I believe they did this to trick initial reviewers, but that doesn't work when the initial reviews are crap.

    damn, they really need to rethink their marketing strategies.

    There is nothing to say the game is disapointing. Same as the last and the one before. There are unskipable in game ads, and its a slot michine. I will never buy another game from 2k until this **** stops they dont realize that the players are the most important with out us they are nothing. **** 2k

    Your best bet is to mail EA a cheque for $90 and just skip playing 2K21 this year

    Easily the worst basketball video game I've ever played! How do you make a basketball game that the casual player can't make an easy mid range shot? It seems the product managers at 2k outsmarted themselves and made a great game for the loud minority of 2k League players.

    As for the casual players, like myself, I can't believe I'm writing this, but can't wait for NBA Live next gen!

    I want to talk about the development team for this generations version of the game, (PS4 & X box one). The developer only had half a team working on that while for next gen they had Two or Three teams working on it.

    Game play: The overall game play remains the same as it did in NBA 2K20, it feels more like a patch than a new game with some minor differences. First thing that is new is the shot meter which I feel like is a downgrade compared to 2K19 and 2K20 shot meter; it feel more like an arcade version which is rather disappointing you do have the option of turning it off though. Not only is the shot meter disappointing but the shooting is not as good as it was in 2K19 and 2K20 what I mean by that is it does not feel as good as it did in previous instalments, the only thing 2K added was new shot animations and more pie charts for your my player build. The game play itself is solid though but unfortunately it’s the only thing that is solid on this generations version.

    Controls: The controls are the same with a few minor tweaks such as the aiming stick for the shooting, which is really annoying because we did not need that in the first place it can mess up the ball handling. I myself went in to the controls and made them classic by taking the aiming stick off and using the right stick for the handling. The classic controls are what work if something is not broken 2K please do not fix it.

    Modes: There are many modes in this years installation of the NBA2K franchise, my favourite to this day is still my career. In this years my career you start off in high school and make you way through college and in to the NBA which is something I have wanted for a long time in a career mode.

    My Team: This year really is no different when it comes to this mode accept you can transfer your team and the virtual currency over to the next generation.

    The Neighbourhood: The neighbourhood got a huge cosmetic overhaul but that is all it got, it still takes about 10 minutes to get an actual game going, mostly people just stand around and it is incredibly frustrating, but that is OK I still enjoy it when I do get a game.

    NBA 2k21 just feels like a patch from NBA 2K20 in some areas it is good some areas is bad, but it is still fun.

    The game is literally the exact same game as last year (maybe even before last.) The shooting is awful, the online play is filled with cheese. There has been literally no improvements made, in fact the only thing I can see is new faults.     I wanted to write why "0", but it is just too depressing. Nothing in this game is done right. 2k21 is like a patch that broke the game to the point it is unplayable without a hope it will be fixed later. I hope ps5 version will be better, but who am I kidding - it's 2k....

    If I could give this game a negative score I would! Easily one of if not the worst nba 2k games I have played. This game is a literal copy and paste of 2k20 and they somehow made it worse. For shooting is inconsistent even if you know your release.     Would get a 0 but it is better then madden 21 so there is that. The micro transactions in these game are on the predatory side and would second guess getting this for any children cause how aggressively game pushes to spend real money beyond its initial purchase.

Sports games have done little other than roster updates for years but since the NBA season isnt over 2k decided to make the games functionally unplayable. Since they put in 0 work to adjust for the NBA being thrown off schedule they should've just waited to release when the next season was about to start.     I’m sorry but is literally the worst 2k I’ve played. The animations are so bad and the build system isn’t any better. Please make adjustments to next gen ps5 2k21 I payed 108$ to and I literally deleted the app off of my console.

The game had so many problems with shooting and it's just not any fun playing a full game (around 30-40 minutes) where your shooting FG percentage is around 10-15%. Layups are easily missed, and playing defense against the CPU is impossible.

    Then there is the PAY WALL. Basically to get better players, you have to purchase VC in order to purchase packs. Once purchasing packs, you ONLY have 2% odds on getting really good player cards. Bottom line, you have to pay and buy a lot of packs in order to get a good team. In order to compete against the computer, you have to have a good team other wise you will continue to lose and become frustrated. I spent about 1,000 hours on 2K20 and it was such a great experience because the time involved was worth it as the rewards given for playing the game slowly made your team better. However for 2k21, the rewards are lackluster and downright almost impossible to achieve unless as stated before you have a good team to compete.

    In summary I stopped playing 2K21 after 2 weeks because it was extremely frustrating and difficult to play against the CPU. This sucks because I spent $100 on the Mamba Edition and spent $100 on VC which really didn't make my team any better due to the 2% odds.

    Do yourself a favor and skip this game    … Expand

    The game is very difficult to play with the new shooting stick. The MyTeam Triple Threat Offline is a joke. When you cannot score on a Guard with Shaq because the difficulty is insane. The only way you can hit an outside shot is by hitting a perfect green release. I have enjoyed the new One Will Rise and leveling up for prizes, but it forces you to play games I don't usually play as itThe game is very difficult to play with the new shooting stick. The dribbling mechanism is great though and I like that we can put on badges again, but there useless if they help when playing Triple Threat offline.… Expand

    As of this moment, the MyTeam section of the game is nigh on unplayable. It is absolutely infuriating and boring trying to compete in the current meta, let alone against the AI. 2k has gone out of their way to make the game inaccessible to new players and even franchise veterans. MyCareer has its own gamut of problems and until a new patch comes out, this has been a $100 waste of money. Not cool.

The only real change has been with the environments for the neighbourhood and court ls and pointless Mycareer story.  MyGM has been completely and deliberately ignored and nothing further to add as nothing has been added.

    Now Mycareer, another story which has no influence or bearing on you getting to the NBA. The story has some good moments buta lack of a combine and obvious team of choice workout that leads to you, surprise ,surprise being drafted by that team is just weak.  Once in the NBA the story just stops, no follow on, no endorsement tasks, no interviews, no NOTHING. The pointless draft of you and your friend getting drafted No1 & No2 felt like something could happen, but the story just stops. There is no follow on, no content, no build up to a long history of rivalry or story regarding why he was traded, it's just trash.  Even winning the NBA has no winning cut sceen anymore, the season it ust ends. Now in the progression of Mycareer it feels pointless with no way to increase Team chemistry as its tied to interviews which aren't in the game. Stupid emails from your agent saying "you killed it" at your last endorsement event which never happens as its been taken out of the game. The game has so many issues its unreal and smacks of contempt to their customers. This is not a patch as a patch adds or improves on a game. This is a regression as the things that made Mycareer in 2K20 has been deliberately left out for NO REASON. For 2K to come out and say they are focusing on next gen is one thing, but dont release a game worse than the last with less content and development and demand the same cost as a new title. Please do not buy this game, get 2K20 and you will have a better game for less money. This is the worst I have seen in blatantly ripping you off for nothing since EA regarding Madden and FIFA.    … Expand

Its the same reason with Madden NFL 21 that its cash and grab game, copied and pasted from last year 2K20, alot of bugs this time, focus too much on microtransactions and the story is so embarrassing and cringe. I order the 100$ Black Mamba edition and got it on the release date, and have not been able to play online ONCE because of the terrible lag. Every other game I own works fine online, just 2k.     The most realist basketball game ever. I’ve been playing 2K series since 2K06 which makes 15 years and I agree that this game ain’t easy. If you are struggling with new pro stick aiming function on shooting, go on a setup and do not use this function.

    I'm going to give 2k Sports the benefit of the doubt here, NBA 2k is honestly better than Madden NFL 21 and other sports games out there despite not being the most popular sport in the world. But other than that, this game doesn't have anything new here to offer (besides MyCareer and the new Neighborhood). MyLeague and MyGM are still the same but nothing new is added. The gameplay feelsI'm going to give 2k Sports the benefit of the doubt here, NBA 2k is honestly better than Madden NFL 21 and other sports games out there despite not being the most popular sport in the world. But other than that, this game doesn't have anything new here to offer (besides MyCareer and the new Neighborhood). MyLeague and MyGM are still the same but nothing new is added. The gameplay feels much like the same except the shot meter is way different and much harder to master. There also new historic teams added including the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors and 2018-19 Toronto Raptors, but there are some players on the historic team's missing. So overall, this game is pretty much the same as last year. I only recommend this game if you are a hardcore NBA fan and want to play some MyPark with your friends or if you want to play with your favorite NBA team online or in MyCareer. Or just you pass on this version and wait for the PS5/ XBOX Series X/ XBOX Series S comes out.… Expand

As a casual player, it is frustrating to play this game as the grind to getting to a decent overall rating is ridiculous. Untried rookies have a higher 3 point rating than Damian Lillard. Enes Kanter is somehow a defensive God, and on the other hand I'm destroying legit defenders like Paul Millsap, Dwight Howard and Giannis Antetokumpou. The devs are clearly focussing on Microtransactions over performance with MyTeam now being the poster game mode for 2K. Even the cover athlete (Damian Lillard) is trashing the shooting mechanics. Dump MyTeam, change the neighbourhood up instead of a beach re-skin and fix the broken gameplay. I can't possibly see NBA 2K getting any worse than this. If you're in between you're most likely struggling. Even pure shooters recommend buying shooting boost. But my first build is a perimeter lock and just saying he's not good for shooting or defense he constantly gets shot over and layed on by playmaking shotcreators, last time I checked they can only shoot and dribble. But the only thing I could think a perimeter lock is for is steals or reaching which is pretty dumb because I wanna play ACTUAL DEFENSE! There's also one more thing I've noticed there's only one pie chart that lets you dribble and shoot constantly which is the shooting and dribbling pie chart. The closest one is pure playmaker with high ballhandle but mediocre shooting of 75. I do respect the dribble heads even though this year the bad people only look better because they make a playshot, do one dribble, use screen, then shoot off dribble and boom they have a higher win percentage than anyone that's not using a playshot even though they never actually learned how dribble to get open, and it definitely doesn't help when the center drops you with a screen that you literally slowly walked into not run into.… Expand

They literally gave us the same game from last year. The only difference is, the VC system is so much more expensive. The value of 100,000VC is much more ridiculous.     First off, let's address the elephant in the room. The shooting. I don't care what any Youtuber or "Get Good" bro says, the shooting is broken. I have tried about 30 different jumpshots so far, and cannot get consistent green with any of them. This wouldn't be a problem if you didn't HAVE to have green to make the basket. But if you don't get green (especially in The Neighborhood) you will most likely miss the shot. Why is this bad? It's bad because it ruins any chance of playing sim basketball. Instead, every game devolves into dunks and layups. Even in MyTeam (2K's cash cow), once you get to the higher tiers, the games are just a dunk/layup contest. The shooting has made this game almost unplayable. And it's definitely not fun.

    Prelude- This one is just a personal preference. I think the prelude was way too long. Too many pointless high school games and too many college games. I ended up skipping most of the cutscenes because they seemed to just drag on. I was four hours into the game and still wasn't at the draft yet. Speaking of the draft, I hate how they let you pick your team. Players can't do that in real life, so why here. I did a workout with the Thunder and ended up getting drafted by them with the 2nd pick. Funny thing is, they also had the 1st pick and drafted Cobb. (How the hell would they have the first and second picks? That was outrageous). I remember in 2k(10?) you did the pre-draft combine stuff and went up against top draft picks like John Wall and Evan Turner to get your draft grade. If you did good, a random team would draft you. If not, you were headed to the D-League. What ever happened to that?

    MyCareer- This mode is relatively the same. Same layout, same assistant coach that speaks for the head coach (They didn't even change his look from last year), etc. But then there were things 2K left out. There's not more Inside the NBA with Shaq, Kenny, Earnie, and Chuck. No more press conferences after the game. When you negotiate an endorsement, all of that is done via text rather than you going into the office. They were just too lazy to add stuff that was already in the game last year. Again, using 2k10 for reference, I remember when you played a nationally televised game or a game against a superstar at your position it was called a "key game" and you would earn bonus XP. That always made me want to play better during those games. I'm not sure why they removed that.

    Overall, this is just a lazy cash grab. If you haven't already purchased this but want to, I'd say wait until the next-gen version comes out. No sense in wasting your time building a MyPlayer only for you to have to start over again. This game and Madden are examples of why competition is good. Whenever a company has a monopoly, the consumers are the ones that suffer the most.    … Expand

    The fact that you see sponsors everywhere you are looking at, is not enough, to milk that game.
    Why do I always have to wait 5 seconds in each timeout, before beeing able to skip? Do I really have to consume the nice sponsor placements all over the arena?

    Try not to milk your community anymore. Sponsor deals should be enough for a sports simulation.

    My build is a 6'8 PAINT beast [red/blue] with max badges and 90 strength but I can't reliably hit post moves, dunk, or even score in the PAINT over non defensive builds, while playmaking shot-creators can make 100% of their fading shots, can spam behind the back dribbles behind one screen for the entire shot clock and green light their shots after the defender gets brick wall'ed 20 times(broken mechanic that has been in the game since NBA 2k19), they can score however they like in transition since chase downs are broken. you gave shooting a hot fix instantly when the babies with no badges couldn't shoot so how about you give the paint back to the builds that require it especially when they are maxed out.

    PAINT CAMPING IN THE PARK IS CANCER (only allow the defense to be in the paint for 3 seconds like other game modes)
    BRICK WALL SHOULD ACTIVATE 1-3 TIMES PER SCREEN (depending on badge upgrade)
    HEART CRUSHER IS BROKEN (1 steal results in the team being cold??)

    The moment you guys have competition in the basketball gaming market then i feel these issues will be resolved but this is the last 2k I will personally buy and i'm making my friends and viewers pick up and try NBA live for next gen because any other BS is better that the toxic BS you guys put out year after year    … Expand

You barely get any VC to start out and the grind is longer than climbing Everest with no hands. If this game was free I’d still ask for a refund, this game is like the Knicks but a basketball sim. I’d rather spend my money on supporting ISIS rather than these developers at this point. How could you have three years to make a game and still have no improvements, and I say three cause this is the exact same thing as 2k19 but updates rosters and downgrades in quality. The MyLeague draft classes, settings, and everything is broken and probably won’t be fixed, MyTeam feels the same but you have to start over, and MyCareer is the same as MyTeam. How can it get this bad? I had hope that this game might have been better than 2k20 but it got worse. It’s worse because it’s the same and the most fun I’ve gotten from this game is venting in this review right now. So I did buy the basic one, Damian Lillard cover, but I bought USD100 worth of VC. I started playing MyCareer playground during the 2xREP for the beach party and my account went to Rookie 1 twice. II just started playing 2k20 early this year, then I figured I should buy 2k21 while it's new so I can get a better rating on MyPlayer REP while playing at the neighborhood section of the game. So I did buy the basic one, Damian Lillard cover, but I bought USD100 worth of VC. I started playing MyCareer playground during the 2xREP for the beach party and my account went to Rookie 1 twice. I gained some REP points then after REP1 i upgraded to REP1 again. I found online that I was not the only person that this happened to, but a few others as well. I tried contacting their support team but crickets for the past two days, I guess they're busy figuring out how to respond to the issues that everyone is having here. Aside from that, the game got really harder to play in my opinion (MyCareer NBA and Playground), it seems like 2K favors people that upgrade right away (during first week or release?) with VCs. When you play in the playground, the players that have upgrades already were so dominant and it would really try to make you want to buy VC out of frustration. I ended up buying VC for USD100 and my player got better in the playground. It still sucks that I had to do two same REP levels. I threw away $160 and I know that's nothing to most people that play 2K but I really think it's not worth it.… Expand

Shooting open jumpers with a shooter like klay thompson anywhere on the court is 0/20 unless you green (which they made impossible to do unless you practice 10 hours a day). CPU difficulty is ridiculously high on all levels (feels the same on pro to hall of fame), CPU will pretty muchThis game is straight up trash in every sense of the word. Shooting open jumpers with a shooter like klay thompson anywhere on the court is 0/20 unless you green (which they made impossible to do unless you practice 10 hours a day). CPU difficulty is ridiculously high on all levels (feels the same on pro to hall of fame), CPU will pretty much make any contested shots, no matter how good your defense is. I play MyTeam offline mainly, and it just feels like they're trying to make you frustrated with the game so people would be more inclined to buy and open packs. At least make the game playable if you're gonna make a cash grab machine. This is the most frustrating experience I've had with any game in the entirety of my 30 years on this planet.     I'm playing since 2k9 and every year the game for some weird reason is keep getting worse and worse.. I believe 2k has over relaxed since the absence of nba live and they don't even care about the game or the community anymore.. They just keep giving us the same game over and over again with 0 improvements and this has to finally stop! Fix your game Ronnie!

    I like the idea of change shooting mechanic but it doesn’t have enough balance to have fun game. Shoot with button is not effective anymore if u want to score with button u only need to green and green window is more little than last year. Shoot stick is op for me i think if u have a trick for shoot u can shoot 9/10 3point.Have u seen a problem???.     Absolutely awful and full on microtransactions just avoid as a whole not worth the 60$ price tag spend that money on something better like a copy of borderlands 2 or bioshock the collection you'll get alot more enjoyment out of either of those games that what you would playing this

Played the CPU on Superstar and they ran out of bounds 6x’s in the first half and then 7 times in total the next game. I feel drunk trying to control my players. The Rec and Park are laggy, they freeze a lot, and the gameplay is just delayed and awful. I’m very disappointed by yet another sportsThe moment is awful period... I try to play MyCareer to upgrade my player, I waste 20 minutes of my life just to get a blue screen with an error code and the game doesn’t count. Took over a day for the pre-order bonuses to show up on my account, and then once I was able to start playing games things just steadily got worse. I have played between 10-20 hours trying to find something to like about this game, but I have yet to come across anything that is enjoyable.     Worst game I’ve ever played. No one wanted a new neighborhood we wants parks back, no one wanted a new shot meter the one we had was good enough and the new one is so bad can’t make a single shot

    Not only did they lie about nerfing slashers being able to dribble for the entire shot clock andthen greening it, they changed the shot meter which is meh. But the thing that crosses the line is the slashers being better shooters than the archetype of sharpshooter.

    It loses a point because of its Virtual Currency (VC) obsession, a recurringissue in 2K games. It’s supposed to ensure that all your actions in every mode – career, MyTeam, even watching 2KTV – secure rewards, but they’re often someagre that the entire game comes across as a grind, aimed at funnelling you towards the PS Store to part with real cash.Please don’t do that. The only way games like this and FIFA will change in the next gen is if their players make a sustainedeffort not to exchange any of their hard-earned dosh for digital trading cards. Otherwise this is solid, but on that front 2K (and EA, and the rest) must do better. [Issue#181, p.94]

    NBA 2K21 makes welcome improvements to its MyCareer and MyTeam modes, but the frustratingly inconsistent new shooting system and lack of changes elsewhere make it feel like it’s lost its step over other sports games.

    On the court, this is a brilliant basketball game that doesn’t change much. Why would it when it’s not really necessary? The microtransactions, however, are more annoying than Houston’s playstyle.
