This game is trash. Too much of a grind unless you buy micro transactions for VC. Too many terribly written, cheesy cut scenes which you can't skip. Advertisement everywhere. gameplay hasn't improved much, still a lot of the same issues. This franchise gets worse and worse every year since 2k14 and 2k18 is pretty much rock bottom. Everything that has been hyped about this game is a scam.

I remember Crew Mode dying. I remember 2K14 for PS4 where they replaced a simple menu-based matchmaking system for blacktop games with the awful concept of ‘The Park’.

I also must preface by saying the recent revelations of the Activision patent leak should be on every gamers minds when it comes to microtransactions. They alter game conditions to frustrate players in hopes of selling things. Is this good for gaming? And if Activision is doing that, who else is?

    NBA2K18

In the last few iterations of the NBA 2K franchise, people actually enjoy Park mode without questioning the fact that to get in a game, you must stand on a circle to “get next”. Instead of using a menu selection to play a virtual game of basketball, you are waiting indefinitely on a virtual circle to play the virtual game. How this came to be accepted shows the seeds of the downfall of man - a willingness to accept our reality as it is.

Since 2K15, 2K has actually done a great job improving the game every year. With 2K18, a great game at release, they have decided they need to patch it four times in less than one month, each patch with notes that obviously omit things (like the fixing of tedious VC gaining tricks) and make the game worse.

The patches obviously are steering towards tightening the play of MMO-type modes like Pro Am and Park, but in so doing they are ruining the core game - without abandon.

Tall players shoot much easier, tall fast players like Thon Maker are now even more godly than last year’s game. He passes like LeBron now....

The game is one giant middle finger to its customers. The open world aspect is merely a way to make you mad. It’s a massive, pointless, unfun waste of time. Why don’t you have menu based navigation? Because this game is designed to make you frustrated for as long as possible in the hopes YOU BUY MORE STUFF....

After the Activision patent leak, I’m desperately hoping the same happens to 2K and reveals their tactics. They’ve taken a great game and turned it into a tumor. It’s a cancerous black hole on the corner outside of your house that panhandles constantly, and the cops want nothing to do with it because they’re busy standing on a virtual circle to get the next game, without batting an eye or wasting a single thought as to why this shameful “waiting game within a game” concept exists.

Horrible. NBA 2K18 made me throw a controller for the first time in over twenty years, when Super Ghouls and Ghosts for SNES seemed to the 10 year old me to be a practical joke that couldn’t be beat.

2K18 is a practical joke that doesn’t give your money back after it steals it with expert sleight of hand. It’s a cold, rusting steel monolith marking the beginning of the end of video games. If that seems like overreacting, that’s fine. It’s not.

MyTeam is the only mode I can realistically say is better than last year, but that mode also is by definition a massive cash grab.

The gameplay overall is slightly better than 2k17, but everything surrounding it is much, much worse. If you enjoy MyCareer/MyPark gameplay, the two most popular modes, everything about them is worse than last year. There's a lot of good, ambitious ideas in here but its clear the developers bit off more than they can chew. Particularly galling is how slow they are too fix bugs that ruin the user experience but how fast they are to crush any that might make it possible for you to progress at a reasonable rate without draining your bank account. If you're on the fence about this game, get off and get something else.

Reviewing only MY Career. I give the game a 3 instead of a 2 because I'm still playing it, and I might actually get some playing time when I reach level 90 when I can control the roster. Putting a LOT of money in the game already. I'm an 87 and at the rate the idiotic AI coaching is going, I'll be 90 around when 2K99 comes out. Advancement is painfully slow. The next best player on myReviewing only MY Career. The next best player on my team is an 81 and I get 4 minutes per game despite my 2nd year contract guaranteeing me at least 6. The unrealistic minutes I'm playing eliminates any realism immersion.

PROS - Good graphics, game play can be good when you've spent many many hours building up badges.

CONS - Unrealistic coaching decisions. A year ago in-game, all the coaches pleaded with the head coach to let me start. I'm still not starting despite being the best player on the team. My game experience goes like this. Spend 5 minutes waiting on unnecessary cutscenes you can't skip. Play for about four minutes. Go through another 10 minutes of load screens and unskippable cutscenes until I get to the practice facility. Practice. Repeat. It's infuriating! I paid for the game and VC and I can't even play as a starter??? There is no other explanation other than the programmers simply want to troll us and laugh because they took our money.

Layups - Any 7th grader that can't make open layups will not make their school team. Should be rare in the NBA but not in 2k. Be prepared for some of the most outrageous BS to ever occur in modern gaming. You've been warned.

Unnecessary waiting - Download some phone games or something because you're going to need something to do for several minutes while you have to spend 20 or so unnecessary seconds watching your player sit in a chair only for you to hit X to get on with it already. This is not a loading screen. Just something you have to wait for Every. SIngle. Game. Just a small example of all the waiting you have to do.

ONLINE - My Career is a single player function that requires internet connection. Enough said. FU 2k!

MONEY - I've enjoyed 2k in the past so decided to spend extra money on it. It really doesn't matter how much money you spend here. The game will keep an elite player on the bench most of the game and progress will take FOREVER! No minutes mean no advancement. It's a cycle that I'm trapped in. Once I can manipulate the roster (which I shouldn't have to) at level 90, I can actually get going. With money and 3 weeks play, I'm level 87. At the current rate, I will be level 90 in about 2 or 3 months real time, all the while getting weak stats due to minutes played.

If you don't mind spending a lot of money and putting up with idiotic coaching roster moves and playing the game for months before you see more than a few minutes game time while waiting 10 minutes in various loading and cutscenes, then this game is for you.

2k, you got my money this year and I promise you, based on this experience, it will never happen again. Another company will take your place in a similar way The Show took baseball away from you. You've been doing this a long time and it's unbelievable that you can actually become WORSE at something the more you do it.

Sadly, 2k knows that EA can not compete with them. Dominating the market means that you can get away with a lot more... So microtransactions are FORCED on you more then in any other 60$ game I've ever seen. The grind in mycareer is virtually undoable as VC comes at a slower rate then ever before making it UNPLAYABLE without spending more money.

I've been a fan of the series for a long time, it introduced me to basketball as a sport and it sucks to see them sell out so hard. 0/10

Next Year: I want to see the crowd get pumped up when i hit a big three pointer, celebrities in the stands can be randomly picked for games making it feel more real. The commentating needs more energy overall, it should feel like an intense game where every play is a big play. Every other franchise is doing a story mode apart from mycareer and i think 2k could benefit. (if they change they're writers) White men can't jump the video game anyone?

Now I don't know how much NBA players earn in real life, but I'm pretty sure it's more than what they pay you on this game, even when you become a starter. Everything in this game involves VC. Everything. When you earn so little and everything is so expensive, it becomes a frustrating experience. For a nice pair of Jordan's to walk about is like 4,000VC. That's maybe 5 or 6 games to play to just afford them. Then you have to spend VC to improve your stats, it's like 2K is forcing players to spend real money on VC to gain any enjoyment out of this. The story is mediocre as well, not as good as what I had heard from people to be honest. The create-a-player system was awful, my guy looked about 12 and had an annoying voice/accent. Did not enjoy this game in the slightest. If you enjoy paying extra than the base-game then go for it. To anybody else, avoid. Expand

    Tattoos
    Gear
    Shoes
    Levelling up
    Skill boosts
    Gatorade power up
    Haircut
Absolutely everything in this game that can be customizable costs your their in game currency.
How do you get said currency? Well buy it on the pan store for a charge of up to 100$usd or earn it by playing. But you earn so little it would take say 4 my career games to earn enough for a haircut or tattoo.

The mycareer mode main feature is the road to 99. You have to level your player up by playing, but again your rewards are so far and few that it could easily take you 3 full seasons, playing every game, with 12 minute quarters and practicing before every game to even get close. Okay for the hardcore that's fine, but for casual players who have jobs and lives, forget it, you will never see your career player progress beyond a bench warmer.

Most casual gamers will be turned off after their first hour anyway because of their forced story telling and opening sequence which is just asinine. Nothing is skippable. You. Must. Sit. Through. It.

Then there's the server issues. See you bought the game right, and you wanna play your offline career right? Well too bad, it requires their servers, and if they go down, which they do, daily, you can't play anything but play now. You could be in the middle of your careers best game, and when it's over, server is offline, you lose all your earned VC. There is no fixing it, lost, bye, do it again, chump. Their forums are a joke deleting posts that are critical or call their servers out and the load times are longer than it takes a one legged no armed 10 year old to load the contents of bill gates house into a fleet of uhauls.

But this is sports games now, buy the game, then keep buying or spend a year getting your player levelled to about 90.

It's getting to the point where gamers need to consider lawsuits as these games are clear money hosing scams, they are literally becoming the Trump University of gaming, pay big costs with little to nothing to show for your investment.

The staff at 2k/VC should be ashamed of themselves, once reputable honest to goodness game debs have become virtual crack dealers. The first hit, cost of the game, is tolerable, but you have to pay huge to keep getting that fix. But don't come crying to them when the needle breaks (server) before you can ascend, because they will ignore, ban or delete.

R.i.p. 2K series. Best of luck devs, I hear walmart needs greeters.

    Just awful on every level.

I and many others paid $60 (or whatever it was) to buy this game, and for years and years that's all that I had to do to make sure I had fun.

Plan to spend 4500 in VC to give your player a sip of Gatorade during the game. I'm only slightly exaggerating.

In no way is NBA 2K18 a bad game, but it's certainly not worth its current price-tag, as the few improvements it offers are simply not enough, and, secondly, its sub-par single-player portion relies too much on micro-transactions.

A beautiful, exciting representation of the sport. You'd be hard pushed to find a better, more accurate simulation of basketball on a modern console. [December 2017, p.82]
