NBA 2K18 is the king of the sports genre. This entry happens to be an inflection point within the franchise, being the biggest jump when it comes to new mechanics and quality during this generation. The Hood is the biggest of the last years in a game of this characteristics, something that points 2K Sports and Visual Concepts as the vanguard of innovation in this aspect.

2K Sports delivers an amazing game, with great new features and an even better simulation. It's, without a doubt, the best title of the series so far.

Probably the best sports game of the year and a great achievement for 2K and Visual Concepts. Brilliant.

This year's entry is incredible in so many ways, from graphics, to soundtrack, to the different modes and ways to play hoops. It becomes clear early on that the fastest and easiest way to progress is by spending real money, slightly marring an otherwise tremendous experience.

NBA 2K18 is an excellent basketball simulator. Still, player's progress is heavily relied on microtransactions, but that's the only real downside.

NBA 2K18 is a solid title but does little to improve overall, featuring relatively the same experience as years past.

With NBA 2K18 we’ve reached an inevitable crossroad, though the signs should have been seen a while back. The on court action is still the best available, but there is now room for another franchise to come and steal an audience that will be sick of the costs of simply being able to compete in the 2K series. The grind isn’t fun and paying gives advantages over those who won’t or can’t afford to. You absolutely cannot ignore how NBA 2K18 is a full price game that also integrates the business model of a free to play/pay to win title and the way that the enjoyment you get from it suffers because of it.

Numerous people couldn't (and still can't) even play the game because of server errors which require people to open certain ports within your routers settings.

MyCareer is filled with bugs/glitches, some of which have been patched, but just for an example, your agent Bryan's text messages can be inaccessible for some, and when you try to open them, the game will freeze. This means that endorsements cannot be applied to your MyPlayer.

The Neighborhood is a dumb novelty that I feel subtracts to the park experience. You have to travel if you want to buy or equip something instead of going into a menu to access it quickly. The court view, which in the last 2 years was able to be accessed by holding a trigger button; and then you would see your actual player on the same court just top down and zoomed much father out, now has to be pressed with the right shoulder button, but you can't see your player anymore! now you get a green dot, and moving to the next available court by just watching this screen is way too hard to maneuver around because the directions are different! completely retarded choice there 2k.

Alley-oops to teammates are absolutely broken in online/offline modes, but mostly for online. They changed the setup so that you have to start throwing an alley a lot sooner than you did last year. Good luck if you want to thrown an alley to a teammate who's in the middle of the key, or directly under the basket.

The actual "story" (I use that term very loosely) in MyCareer is amazingly weak. It's filled with annoying characters who contribute to the most self-indulgent and pointless story I've ever seen in MyCareer; and guess what? you can't skip any cutscenes, even if you're playing with a 2nd MyPlayer and you've already seen all of the same cutscenes with your first MyPlayer.

MyLeague/GM adds different coaching system, and with that, players proficiency within whatever system; but you can't change a players system proficiency, or even see which player fits with your system unless you are signing someone from the free agency pool. This is extremely frustrating when scouting/drafting or trading for players because you can't see if they would fit the system that you like to run.

Gameplay is good. It's not great in any one area, but overall it's pretty good. The passing is improved, and I love the hold pass button to throw passes to teammates who are farther away. CPU AI defense is more difficult than last year, but it doesn't bother me as some have said. Contact dunks are much better and feel painful when you get someone or get got yourself. I like the changes to the shot meter, which is now to the left of the players head, and has customisable colors.

Content creation is the same as last year, the only addition is that you can make custom shirts that can be voted on in MyCareer to be added to the store to buy with VC... VC... oh yeah... VC...

They added dual archetypes to MyPlayer's and it definitely adds for a more customisable experience, but good luck leveling up. This year the grind is absurd.

Do you like to spend a bunch of money to upgrade your MyPlayer, MyTeam, MyLeague/GM? if you do, this game was made for you. The cost of everything in this game is ludicrous. Myteam packs go for anywhere between 4,000 VC to 12,500 VC (higher than last year) attribute points in MyCareer are about 5x more expensive than last year, and the accessories?!!? boy you better be rich, much more expensive than last year. A pair of plain shorts can cost you upwards of 5,000 VC. On top of all of that, the game is amazingly stingy with the amount of VC you can earn from park games and career games, so it really makes you want to go into that store and dish out $100 for some extra VC.

To summerize, basically it's the same game as last year with a few cosmetic changes; the new passing (which is good), a dumb MyCareer story that can't be skipped, and a MyPark that is all flash but actually very annoying for a variety of reasons. VC is astoundingly front and center, hard to come by without spending actual money, and overall is vastly overpriced. Dual archetypes is nice for MyPlayer, but the grind is a bit too much for someone who doesn't buy VC.

Overall a pretty weak entry into the NBA2k lineup, and considering everything that I mentioned up above, I'm going to grade it a [light to decent 5/10] [C-]

I purchased the steam version as well as the switch version, and I generally like the switch version since I have been looking forward to an NBA game on the go for a long time. The PC high-end version, nah. It is a clear money grab, no opening CG, no changes for the player profiles, and the MC story is the worst for the last couple of years, reminds me of the pre-2k 14 days of this game.

Besides the limited effort the develop team put in this game, I have the feeling that if you are a person who has a normal life, you wouldn't even have enough time to play this thing. It requires so much grinding otherwise you need to buy and spend VC on literally everything. Even if you upgrade your character via tons of VCs you would still miss easy layups, like you are controlling a kindergarten player but not an NBA player. In the end, you still need to grind and grind to get those badges to ensure your layups...

I mean, I totally understand 2K wants the players to hook up more with this game, but man, I have my own life, and I just want to play a video game, to do what I could not do in the real life. I surely can miss layups a lot, no need to recreate that feeling in a video game.

Its very evident as soon as you play that 2k skipped so many corners in fine tuning this game. This is obvious by the fact that you dont actually have to be good at playing the game, you just have to know how to exploit the disastrous animations. (zig-zag cheese and getting players stuck in animations to run right by them)

Looking pass the flawed game play mechanics, you can file this one in the pay to play category. MyTeam is heavily influenced by the overly priced packs coupled with the throttled currency you earn from playing. For God sake! you cant even use the auction house without completing certain goals including buying a pack using MT or VC. I would have more to say about my team, but i was very discourage to continue playing the mode due to the requirement to rely on packs (with noticeably low odds at pulling anything worth anything).

MyCareer was fun for the first season. the progression seemed fair and kept me entertained until i reached about 77 overall. It goes from enjoyable cruising speed to awful bumper to bumper traffic speed. By the time you complete the first 82 games you will be around 75-78 overall and the next seasons can be summed up to intense grind. upgrades become unreasonably expensive which is just another excuse to get the player to pay real money to jump ahead.

    MyGm was the same. OK

Ill sum it up in one sentence. Shameless "basketball" casino

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 2k read this. As to my career and playground/park mode. VC is the main focus in these modes and paying for it is nearly a must. You have to play heaps!!!!! of hrs once you get to 87 to upgrade your player caps it's a lot harder than last year, my career games are not enjoyable or fun at all!!!! as difficulty setting of AI is way to hard there is no rookie mode anymore just to have fun!
Park mode has gone and been replaced with the one playground for all, definitely looks good but it stops there. There is no rep mode at all!! Gone! This is a huge NONO.
Park mode was my most favorite mode and for that to be scrapped was a BIG DEAL for me.
A big thing is that this game has had so many problems as it has NOT BEEN TESTED BEFORE RELEASE to fix the issues. it already has had 3 full game updates and a lot more mini updates and its only 2 weeks old and still has lots of issues.
A couple of gameplay issues, to steal the ball all you need to do is to run into the person if you ever press the steal button you will nearly every time get a foul and usually a sec after it has been pressed and a lot of times when not near the ball.
A playmakers constantly loses the ball, players can't catch a ball, players can't shoot the ball. Animations are very slow, did I mention that you are forced to go and workout at a gym to keep your energy at 100 percent after every single game. This takes 5-10 mins extra each time.
In my career you have to watch hrs of cutscenes literally that you cannot skip, would be ok if you just wanted to watch a movie of it and I could see the appeal if I was just in to that kind of thing, but I just want to play basketball like so many others.
You are also pretty much forced and pressured into getting tattoos as part of my career, bit of a moral dilemma. 2k15 and 2k16 were fun to play, 2k17 started to change abit for the worse but was still ok.
I think as 2k has become more and more as a online game a lot of these changes have also happened.
There is also quite a few good things with this game but they are absolutely drowned by the bad things sad to say.
These are just a couple of the issues I have, there are still many more.
If you want to play a easy, fun and stress free game then this is not the game for you.

The graphics and animations are good. In myTeam they added a lot of challenges to do.
But if you play MyPlayer, then you have to pay for every little thing. And VC is hard to get by. They have a companion app, where you could get a decent amount of VC daily. In 2K16 it was up to 3500 a day, in 2K17 up to 2000 a day and now in 2K18 it is up to 600 a day. I'm disgusted with 2K.

But since this game is pay to win, it should also be free to play. If it was a free game, it would get a 8 or 9 rating, but since it's not, 0 point. 2K's greed has no limit.
