This was my first Monster Hunter Game, and I really enjoyed it. It is a good game to play with your friends, is entertaiting to grow together and capture all the monsters that are spread on the world. There are a few that are amazing, have a good movements and allow you to enjoy while killing them.

A nice game to play with your friends.

It's a great game to begin with but its weaker than MHGU for me.

Well from graphical stand point, it's no doubt to be that good and it's quite dense and big as well for only 1 map. Yes, the map is dense but that makes exploring the world quite confusing, so many vegetations and other thing that obstruct how you view the world (not the map). Well, you'll memorize it by the end of it

Yes, the map is dense but that makes exploring the world quite confusing, so many vegetations and other thing that obstruct how you view the world (not the map). Well, you'll memorize it by the end of it but it's easier to explore around in GU dan in World. And, any herbs, honey, etc. is hardly noticeable because they blend in with the world which is a great one but I hardly collect enough because I keep missing it. Yes, you got the help from scoutfly to locate each one of them but there comes another problem which is lighting of the game is not consistent which mostly makes me lost track of the scoutfly that locate certain object.

Speaking of map, the icon of the map seems washed out. I don't know if I can mess around about it in the setting but so far, I didn't find any solution for this. That icon really helpful thou to locate certain object to collect for your Quest.

The palico also rarely help you when you get stunned or electrified but they did heal you a lot in battle. Well, I still do prefer to get smacked by my palico when I'm stunned or electrified.

Last, it's my preferences but MHW seems to weakened most of their monsters. Like I met Rathalos on GU when I unlock the 5 stars village Quest and I got stun a lot as well as burned. In MHW, I encounter him when I'm on a mission to hunt down Pukei-Pukei (the 3rd Quest I believe). I kinda of hesitant but decided to engage in combat. Turns out, I'm winning without even healing at all. Cutting tail also way easier in MHW than GU. To be honest, this affects the satisfaction kind of feel that I hardly get from World.

Overall I do enjoy the game but GU still a better game in my opinion which makes me keep coming back to GU more than World.

Capcom went in a different direction with this game, and it paid off. The more realistic style of the game really brought my attention to it, since I thought it fit more with this type of game than the overly cartoony style of the older games.

The gameplay is great, many people call it clunky not realising that it's part of it, it's a way of punishing the player for making bad decisions
Capcom went in a different direction with this game, and it paid off. The more realistic style of the game really brought my attention to it, since I thought it fit more with this type of game than the overly cartoony style of the older games.

The gameplay is great, many people call it clunky not realising that it's part of it, it's a way of punishing the player for making bad decisions and not having enough control of their skills and character movement. People don't complain about this with Dark Souls and such, why should they about Monster Hunter?

The gameplay is satisfying, especially with friends, you have an enormous amount of monsters to fight, quests to do, and trophies to acquire. There's base decoration and endemic life collection which you can display, which was one of the must fun surprises I had with this game, some of the music can be quite nice, and while the story is passable, improving your gear and making different builds for monsters is super fun.

I was going to say that I hoped Capcom would maybe make World a "home console and PC" spin-off and continue the main series on Nintendo portable consoles, but after seeing MH Rise... ehh please bring back World and stick to it, thank you.

All the way from the Playstation 2, PSP, PS3, WII, PC (Frontier) WII-U, 3DS to the Switch and Playstation 4 and my PC again. It's been a very long journey, playing every last game, importing and region breaking all of my systems to play the Japan exclusives, even teaching myself minor hiragana in order to play the games. It's been with me most of my life.

One of the main things I've always had was the isolation, especially in the PSP days, it was such a niche title in the West most people didn't know of it and those who did tried it once and never again.
This is some thing World has tackled face first and I must say. They did FANTASTIC in this area, making it easier to learn and focusing on the west I absolutely adore the new community that's spawned from it! And playing through and completing it myself I can easily say gameplay wise this is the most refined in the entire series.... Unfortunately more so than the new title Rise. Though It's due to the controls for the Switch, I will love it so I'm not worried.

The only issue I have with this game in particular is they catered... Maybe just a little too much to new players... So much that playing this game all the way to Alatreon and Fatalis for a seasoned veteran was.... Incredibly easy to breeze through.. Aside from that I love it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Metacritic must-play is definitely well earned for this game regardless of the platform be it Ps4, Xbox, Pc, and Ps5 & Xbox series X as of writing this review.
It has an amazing story albeit a story that some may not even notice at first but is rather interesting non the less, the story is rather basic when you read into it.

You're a hunter travelling from their homeland to a new and amazing location filled with new creatures, landscapes, flora and fauna.
However said new location is in danger and you're required to help save it from a huge volcano sized monster called "Zora Magdaros" who is venturing to the new world due to a rather unknown phenomenon called "The Elder Crossing" and is looking for its final resting place, this is only a small snippet of the full story but it's an amazing way to draw those who are interested in the story.

The story is not the only thing to like about this game, there is also a massive roster of large monsters, from the relatively easy "Great Jagras" to the amazingly powerful final challenge "Fatalis" there are many types of monsters you can saly and/or capture (yes you can capture monsters but not in the way of "Pokemon").

Just like the monsters, there is a large selection of weapons and armour made out of the very monsters you hunt threw out your time in the new world, each with various different skills and perks, want to boost your damage? then equip armour that has skills that boost your overall damage and ones the boost how often you deal high amounts of damage
Want to decrease your stamina consumption? equip skills that reduce your stamina while running/dodging and/or skills that reduce the amount used up by attacking.

Want to use a weapon that can knock monsters down on the ground? use a hammer!

Want to use a weapon that's superior at range with different ammo types? use a bowgun! (a bowgun is a type of gun in the Monster Hunter universe).

Want to use a weapon that's fast and nimble? use the dual blades or longsword!

Want to use a weapon that does a high amount of damage per hit? use the greatsword!

There is no limit as to what play-style you want to use threw out your time playing.

There is so much to learn and enjoy from this game that I can't recommend it enough to those who are interested in playing this game, and in that case, if you're considering on buying it I'd say "go for it" you won't regret it.

The amount of time and effort Capcom put into World and Iceborne is obvious and is greatly appreciated. Out of the now 60 monsters present there are 2 that I can say I actively dislike. The other 58 are all great additions to the series and I hope to see them return in the future. The progression is smooth and easy and is always rewarding. The difficulty is right where it needs to be for both entry level hunters and veterans alike. After going back since starting and trying the old world style I can say that the quality of life improvements alone make the game worth its weight in gold. Each weapon feels unique and great to use. If you want to know, just go check out an old title. Anyway this game sells console, the only reason I never owned a PS Vita was because of this game, the only reason I was forced to buy a 3DS was because of this game and I will be a stereotypical guy for saying this, that I practically bought PS4 only because of this game. And my next console will be the one where the next Monster Hunter fan base will congregate the most as usual. BTW you have to play at least 500 hours to be eligible to write a review for this game, I am like 3300+ hours and continuing. But there is a big challenge to the entry, you have to commit to it, learn this game, play it with passion and love. Oh and the developers of this game, probably the most generous bunch of people in the World (Pun intended). keep adding tons and tons of content for FREE. All the DLCs are pure cosmetic, you don't have to buy ANYTHING other than the game to win, this is NOT a pay to win game. Yet so many people buy those unnecessary aesthetic stuffs just to express their appreciation and affection towards the game. Enough rambling, I am biased towards Monster Hunter and I don't want to hide it. Expand

Nearly perfect except the quests sometimes are repetitive. And the number of monsters that players want or need to beat are actually within 10, cause people take those ancient ones as their priority.

The story sorta exist, it is kinda boring most of the time but i do like the game no matter what, the monsters are amaizng and really fun to go against, they actually take time to defeat so that is a positive. But again after you verse them 10+ times they become really boring and easy so it loses its sense of challenge. I include iceborne in this review but i beat all of iceborne without failing a single quest becuase the game is to easy at that stage. Maybe for others its a challenge but this was just me.

This is a shorter review but overall this game is worht playing including iceborne, its fun, combat feels good and it has depth. This game is what the genre should be unlike certain rip off games lie God Eater 3.

Wonderful bosses, worlds and character customization. The music is jamming and the animations and fun. Combat is also satisfying. Put in over a hundred hours into this. Ultimately, the G-rank and the need to consistently grind the same monsters is what put me off continuing this otherwise fantastic game.

The fights with monsters who were much stronger than human beings are always full of excitement, always. As a player of former monster hunter series, the design of new monsters in MHW is still charming. With the approval of console, there were much more details in both the models and actions of the monsters. The remake of the monsters existed in former MH was satisfying as well. However, there were also problems created by this evolution. Besides the bugs and weird movements of the monsters, the turf war was upsetting after saw them over and over again. Also, the landform full of steps and slopes made it extremely difficult to enjoy the combat in later game period. Besides, the music was too mediocre to be remembered. Anyway, I still agree that MHW is a necessary evolution for MH series. With this platform, the future of MH is worth expected. Expand

I had to do simply "everything" in the game, like there was no shortcuts to anything. Item gathering, mining, fishing, hunting... It was a fantasy world yet it felt insanely realistic. Not to mention it was a hard game to play, which I really love. Everything I did mattered in a big way. So you can clearly see that, Monster Hunter is my favourite franchise of all time. I've played every single title possible, even the spin-off's. And when World finally got announced in 2017 for the home consoles after all these years I was speechless. When it released, all I did was playing the game for months like a maniac. Did I like it? Answer is obvious but for sure there were some things that I did not like it. First of all, the minority of monsters, armors and weapons. It's understandable since the game had a brand new engine and they had to model everything from the beginning. Considering that, it had a good roster in it. Not to mention, game received FREE title-updates, which brought new monsters, new event, new difficulty levels, armors, weapons and items. With all those unwanted microtransactions, World got an amazing feedback with these free updates. My second complain is the Weapon designs. Monster Hunter team is absolutely crazy when it comes to designing "anything" literally. Monsters, Weapons, Armors... But there was something missing in the weapons. It all looked like a one weapon but undergo some changes with the given materials. The reason behind that was probably, they wanted to make the weapons look realistic for the game. But it backfired for the old players, because every single weapons had its own design in the old games which made each one of them unique and good looking for the players. My last complain is the games difficulty. Compared to the old games it was a little easier. Not to mention our character hunter had even more features to use on its arsenal, it had many advantages compared to old games. That also had a reason itself: the dev. team wanted players to experience a medium difficulty so that everyone could play. Surprisingly, World became CAPCOM's best selling game of all time. Not Resident Evil... Not Devil May Cry... Not Street Fighter... Team was not expecting such praise. So you can say their strategy worked. Thankfully, in their expansion Iceborne, Master Rank will be "tremendously hard" dev.'s say. "We wanted to make the first release accessible, now that we've gained players, we can easily make it harder in a balanced way." which makes me really happy. On its own Monster Hunter World is an amazing game regardless of their cons. It's one of the best co-op experiences in gaming history. It deserves all the praise with the mechanical depth it has in combat, smart monster movements and blood boiling action. Players around the world are waiting for expansion's release since the team revealed... including myself and the woman of my life that I've met in Monster Hunter :) It has been quite a while that I actively play the game since I finished the game 120% every armor, weapon, quest clear. We even caught every single rare pet every fish size. We are just waiting for master rank and hopefully Alatreon... I hope there are people around the world who cares about these games as well and my words speak for their feelings... If you haven't played Monster Hunter. Please give it a try. Accomplishing a victory is the best feeling you can ever imagine in this game... Expand

Compared to the previous games MH World has completely revolutionized the Monster Hunter series. They have created an intricate ecosystem with competing monsters and countless ants crawling everywhere. I was expecting a bland, open map full of pretty bushes and some birds flying above. However, i was proved wrong, there are so many things! And you can abduct them and throw them in your home as well! The massive, polished map this game provides completely blew me away.

Throughout the series, combat has gotten more fluid (especially in MH Generations) but it always remained a little clunky. (Ignoring the fact that the controls are complete ass and you can't change them). Once you get used to the controls, the combat seems a lot more smooth, making it satisfying to land devastating combos on a massive wyvern yearning for your blood. The Great Sword, which used to feel kinda clunky is a lot more fluid, with multiple combos that flow well into each other, making feel bad ass after landing a fully charged combo on a monsters tail. The bow has changed as well. Although undermined by the newly added slinger, the bow still proves to be a fun weapon (noticed they made it more mobile and powerful). However, the guns are so boring, there is nothing special about them. They feel clunky, slow and under powered. Especially the heavy bow gun, been like this since the beginning. But this is just an opinion, you might take a liking to the bow gun.

For all you Monster Hunter fans out there, this is a must buy. However, for players that search for an immersive story that provides many hours of entertainment, you will be somewhat disappointed. The game's story is like an ocean that's one foot deep. When you open the game, you are kinda thrown into the story with barely any context and you chase some big dragon (won't reveal more than that). If story is what you are looking for, turn away. This game is mainly based on hunting monsters, not the story behind them.

Some players are saying that the combat is sluggish, weapons feel clunky, and it's for little kids??? For new players combat will definitely feel a little sluggish as you mindlessly spam two buttons for the first few hours. But you will soon discover that the combat is extremely complicated, providing a huge learning curve. Once you get the hang of these combos you will feel like a bad ass monster hunter. For some reason, I have been noticing reviews stating that the game is for little kids. I must admit, the game does have some weird Japanese **** that appeals to it's main fan base. But as soon as you have a monster eat you out like an Oreo you realize that this game ain't cute at all. This is real **** and your'e gonna piss your pants when you fight the final boss, trust me.

So far, I have been very impressed with the game. However, I have noticed, if you pay some attention, on the Xbox One the game is kinda blurry (thought I was going blind for a second). Not to much of an issue, only makes me more hyped for the PC version. You probably won't notice unless you look really hard as well. I still can't get over how bad the controls are. Hopefully they do something about that.

Biggest thing about this game is that they decided not to ruin the game with pay-to win content, loot boxes and cosmetic bull****. Gotta respect that decision. A company that actually listens to it's players.

    TL;DR

    Pros
This game has massive, well-polished worlds.
    Complicated yet fluid combat.
    Scary monsters.
    NO LOOT CRATES!!!

    Cons
Controls are **** and you can't change them.
Kinda blurry if you pay enough attention.
    A shallow story.

Game would be a 10, but the controls really killed it for me.

Honestly, if the Low and High Rank portions wasn’t as polished and an incredible experience to go through. This score would be 7/8 margin just because compared to previous games, the rotating event quests, RNG investigations for RNG loot, reduced weapon and quest pool, and less challenging solo player end game. But, with the incredibly constructed world, incredible combat experience, and cohesive experience, the downpoints are more just demands for more content.

I won't rehash the problems I had with World simply because they make me profoundly sad. I wanted to like the game, I hoped the new direction would bring the series to a new level, but instead, the whole thing blew up in my face like a Marshmallow Peep left in the microwave too long.

Moving to real consoles has paid off for Monster Hunter. The fifth installment is bigger, nicer and funnier (a bit). In addition, a number of free addons will extend the entertainment for another dozens of hours. [Issue#283]
