Seriously? This game does not have a pause button, when playing solo? I have a life you know. I dont wan to be a "slave of the game" until the hunt is over. The begining of game was pretty promising. But combat seems to bit a little odd and non-controllable. Well. Good game finished with second main quest. This game became stupid, repetiteve, unreallistic. Also this game HAVE NO PAUSE. So it xcould not be better than 6/10 anyway. But it seems to be MUCH worse.

If MH is your jive then my review is meaningless but if you were never into this franchise it is highly unlikely that this game will win you over. The formula is exactly the same, except with slightly less clunky but definitely still clunky combat. If I could get a refund on PSN I would without a doubt.

Running around while healing, grappling hook as a crutch, the ability to re-position your hunter during attacks that previously locked you into place, no more negative armor skills whatsoever.. I could go into great detail here and list many more, but the point is that Capcom simply went too far in their mission to reach a wider audience.
Nevermind the fact that you can now simply craft the rarest materials such as gems and plates.
We can only hope that Capcom will come back to their senses and develop proper, real Monster Hunter games again in the future.

Verdict: A big step forward in graphics, many smaller steps back in gameplay. Possibly the worst MH to date.

Changes adversely affect the core gameplay loop, betray core tenets of the series' signature gameplay, dumb down previously nuanced and engaging mechanics, and make the game even easier than the already cakewalk of a previous entry. Hot trash relying on graphics like every modern AAA. Monster Hunter was a fantastic series while it latest. RIP real monster hunter it was fun while it latest.

I wasn't able to complete the game, but played a few hours and the first few missions before I decided that this wasn't the game for me.

The basics of the story are that you and a load of other hunters are coming to an island to research monsters. There's no notable characters to speak of - everyone you deal with has virtually no background and seem like nameless hunters after a while. After several missions of just hunting monsters in the same map for the sake of hunting monsters, I determined that this is more of an online cooperative monster hunting game than an RPG.

So then we have the combat. I've played the God Eater games, which were supposedly inspired by Monster Hunter games, and the combat in those is bad. I incorrectly assumed that the real Monster Hunter would have significantly better combat (at the levels of Tera, at least).

Combat is sloppy. The main strategy is to keep hitting the monster with whatever attack you have from whichever direction it isn't attacking in. Monsters are slightly more reactive to you than in the God Eater games, though they're still generally nonreactive. They seem like they're attacking randomly or have incredibly slow reflexes, so it's too easy to avoid their attacks. They should just go right for you, but they don't. The battles are long and boring too, with some taking 15 minutes or more, including chasing them when they decide to run away.

Things could get better later on, but with other games to play, and its poor performance on my PS4 pro (it's not a smooth gameplay experience), I decided to put this one down.

But if you don't need a story, don't need an interesting combat system, like tracking and hunting monsters, or like to kill monsters cooperatively online, then this might be the game for you.

It is slow, clunky, and excessive to play. I say excessive because actions done in the game take too long for me as the player to perform. The other aspect of this is the nature of fighting monsters. The fights take too long. Sure, I understand. it is to keep playing playing the game, but the mechanics follow FFXIVARR with their combat. Slow and clunky. It takes too much work to do a simple move like pulling out the sword. The controls are not intuitive. Basically I want to play the game, but I am too busy fighting the controls to actually play the game. I did not finish the game, but I did play enough to give certainty these mechanics are not good enough to continue playing. I am purely talking about this from a mechanical standpoint. I love the character creation and the atmosphere of the game, but the gameplay holds it back to invest time because it is too clunky. Expand

This game contextualizes the failure of any modernized, westernized, newbie friendly generation game, and I feel compelled to speak up because in my view it has no less robbed me with the amount of its asking price, and its incredibly easy to list the factors of a terrible game in analogy to this one, so lets:

    1) The premise of an open world, with a download size of a little over 14GB on PS4, almost around the size of an arcade fighting game, so obvious was the warning that no, there's no open world design here, it's a lot of back tracking and invisible walls and physical limitations, it's a false promise right there.

    2) Menus. If none of the game's challenges require one to skim through its mechanics, then they needn't be there! More so there's a newspaper worth of explaining that the developers take leisure to simply shove in the players' face before one even realizes why they're there.

    3) Oversimplifying. AI isn't really as well developed or "intelligent" as we hope to see it in this game, so the more complicated the game mechanics are, the more versatile an enemy AI seems, but given the tools available to the enemy AI as is, I fail to see how anyone can illude the player with the enemy's toolkit, it feels almost retarded and doesn't warrant of me any more than the mindless whaling of a 3 year old against the buttons of the controller to dish out combos or beat a certain "boss" fight.

The fight style, looks cool! I was taken aback by how awesome my move set was, with any weapon of choice, couple that with amazing graphics and stellar sound that marks my every jump or slash and I almost felt dazzled, but when I actually played the game, none of it made a difference, it's a button masher, positioning is made irrelevant by how easy it is to heal or escape a boss, and the enemies don't have the capacity to react to any move of my choosing, no more than running around or plainly attacking, so they're flat in a sense.

The whole game is rubbish, perhaps the most remarkably over-hyped piece of rubbish in the history of gaming.

I could forgive this game if it had the size, or the story, or even had as interesting a level up system as an MMO RPG, which this game shamelessly tries to be one, but there's no challenge nor reward to be had in it.

First of all, the game has 0 story, 0 character charisma, zero point. What you are asked to do from day one is: "Go there, kill that monster, then come back so I could send you to another place to kill another monster" - that is it. If you are looking for at least bearable tale, run away.

Next: the fighting mechanism is terrible. My expectations might have been a little too high because I started playing this game after God of War 3: Remastered, God of War (2018), DmC: Devil May Cry and oh boy the fights on Monster Hunter look so slow, wobbly, shaky. The mechanics are just terrible (just look how the character climbs mountains - its more like a joke than a decent attempt to make it look good). I don't expect much, but hey, the guy looks like he is having a seizure!

The chasing part: If you have at least some masochistic ideas, then Monster Hunter: World is the thing you need in your life - ultimate satisfaction. How can you not love attacking a monster for 5 minutes only to see it fly away... Then you run! You run out of stamina and look more like a poor weakling who never ate the food his mom gave him and ended up failing every 50 meter run. Then you reach the monster you were chasing, then you attack him for 5 minutes, then he flees again. This time to the claws of a big dragon which kills you in 1 hit. Now you run from spawn point... Rinse and repeat - fun stuff I'd say. So I guess it should be called: "Usain Very-Tired-Bolt Simulator: World".

If you want more good news about being able to punish yourself for all the sins you have committed so that Lord would spare your poor soul, then there are some: you will be able to do this for hundreds of hours! All those annoying chases, all that annoying tracing, all the killing the same (SAME) monster tens and tens of time - YES, you can do that!

I have to admit that I am a fan of grinding, upgrading, crafting. I have ~700 hours in Warframe and I still pick it up because its fun, smooth, beautiful (sadly not intense and hard enough). But THIS game is a horror that even my worst enemies should not experience.

So my verdict would be: stay away unless you have friends to laugh with and make it fun to play. The only thing that can save this game is your friends. If not, I FORBID you to play it - you will thank me.

Patches buff and nerf weapons to insufficient extend where ppl still wont want to use garbage weapons. And worst of all, the way Capcom intend players to grind out jewels is almost predatory to keep the exponentially declining player base from becoming zero, where you are lucky if you got a second attack jewel within 500 hours of gameplay. Its just a glorified HD remake of the same old formula, where devs still dont know how to balance out AI and kept a lot of the useless frustrating element of the old game in (stand up dizziness, tremor, pinned down, etc). It is definitely easier to platinum the game compared to older series, but for $80 it is not worth to buy a HD remake of old MH with less monsters and content. AND FIX YOUR TRASH SERVER CAPCOM. The result is that I don't get help with anything around the house anymore - I can be walking by clearly struggling to carry something or do something, but he can't leave that couch because he is battling a monster, and that is clearly more important than helping his wife. Plan to play only at times when you know you will be able to play uninterrupted and when there aren't other people counting on you to be a supportive partner in running a household. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Monster Hunter World : or how not to make a handheld game seem relevant on current gen consoles

I'll fully admit to knowing very little about the monster hunter series, prior to Monster Hunter World. The few things I did know was it was better know as a handheld title, was reallllllllly popular in Japan and sold more copies then then a Japanese school would selling Yaksoba bread. I'm also aware of the core idea for the game is to hunt monsters, as the title has helpfully explained.

The problems is that its mostly a handheld title. their have been titled on consoles like ps2 ,ps3, wii 360, PC and even wii u(for some reason) but it largely lives on the handheld market and for that reason, having it as the first major console port that most US gamers would play with reworked gameplay was quite the tall order.

Unfortunately, the order was mishandled and instead of getting of getting a salad, we got a salad with bird crap smeared on it. There are many things I can complain about, but i ll start with the "Story".. where you, a silent protagonist that blindly agrees to to anything your to, are supposedly part of an elite group of monster hunters and a have been send to study an elder dragon(that's less a dragon and more of a giant moving blob of lava) and help research monster that live on island and the dragon is going to be coming to.

What this actually translates as, is grabbing a weapon and killing some monsters... and that's pretty much it.. there are bits of story tossed out from time to time, but it feels more of an after thought then a core part of the game.

Most of the game is spent running at a monster that probably could give 2 **** about you and hacking and slashing at it for around 45 minutes.. not even joking.. there are plenty of weapons to use, 14 to start with, but they all pretty much involve hacking ,slashing and trying to doge out of the way of the monsters **** attack.

I say trying to dodge, because it seems like your character is thick in the head and seems to misinterpret DODGE as KEEP SLASHING. which inevitably either knocks your character down, into a stun lock or poisons them.. then you have to try and use a healing or poison curing potion as the monster gets in more free hits and even has free time to do his taxes while waiting for you to die..

and die you will .. a lot.. but you have limited numbers of times of dying before your sent back to the main village place and told to start the mission over from scratch. because Capcom are dickheads.

Even if you work out the brilliant strategy of hitting a monster no more then a few times before rolling out of the way, you 'll have to deal with them getting bored ad running/flying off.. Probably because he was as bored as I was with the same routine.

This is why the game give you 45 minute for the missions,.. because they knew they were **** and knew you'd only be able to use the method of attacking twice and dodging to defeat most monsters..

So looking beyond the barely there story and same old hack and slash combat, what is there?

Well, by killing monsters you get orbs and materials to upgrade weapons and armor.. in order to kill more monsters and get more upgrade points.. meaning the real purpose of the game is to join the cycle of continuously killing monsters, upgrading your character and repeating forever..

So what about positive things... um.. their are a great variety to the monsters, and it looks nice.. really nice.. the monster all have great animations as they fight you or other monsters and the environments all look really great with nice lighting, shadows, and effects going on. ...but looking nice has become pretty common on PS4, pc (and to a lesser degree) the xboner and switch.. I have plenty of games on my ps4 that looks great.. so looking great but doing nothing else doesn't get you a automatic oral fun time.. you need to have compelling story and gameplay to go along with it, if you want my tongue skills on display.. but Monster Hunter World is boring, repetitive and barely has a story in it.. Why would I willingly play this, when i can replay the superior Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Little Nightmares,Yakuza, or any other game that has looks, good story and fun gameplay in them?

I didn't even mention the bare bones and basic character creation system where the female characters have fat legs and the faces look significantly downgraded in-game.

I wouldn't.. but hey, if you like boring, repetitive games, with very little story, and very little going on other then visuals, then Monster Hunter World us the game for you.. enjoy.. I guess...

The gameplay feels so incredibly slow and clunky. Simple things like putting away a weapon take a needlessly long time, it may not seem like much, but given how much you'll be putting it away and drawing it during a fight for absolutely anything other than hitting and that this could well lead to you dying as a result, it's hard not to feel frustrated at it.

No, it being worse in the past does not magically excuse any criticism.

The game demands PERFECTION or a cheese environmental advantage. Even then some of the higher level monsters will still throw you into this chain stun / 100 to 0 death setup and it just isn't acceptable in a game that should be about strategy and skill, not hopeless disadvantages.

I knwew I shouldn't have bought into the hype and waited for a major discount but well, here I am with a slow and boring game everyone seems to be loving.
Graphics are good, can't deny that, but the rest of the game is plain boring. You seek monsters that you fight with about 2 or 3 moves per weapon type until they decide to run away. Then you chase them and beat them some more. You

Then you chase them and beat them some more. You repeat this for about 3 times and they die. You get the reward, you craft armor or weapon from their remains and go kill another one. This is pretty much the game.
Everyting can be beaten with just rool, hit, sheathe weapon, roll, run and heal, repeat.
Don't bother with the story it is there only to let you know which is the next poor creature you've to kill.

Honestly, if the Low and High Rank portions wasn’t as polished and an incredible experience to go through. This score would be 7/8 margin just because compared to previous games, the rotating event quests, RNG investigations for RNG loot, reduced weapon and quest pool, and less challenging solo player end game. But, with the incredibly constructed world, incredible combat experience, and cohesive experience, the downpoints are more just demands for more content.

I won't rehash the problems I had with World simply because they make me profoundly sad. I wanted to like the game, I hoped the new direction would bring the series to a new level, but instead, the whole thing blew up in my face like a Marshmallow Peep left in the microwave too long.

Moving to real consoles has paid off for Monster Hunter. The fifth installment is bigger, nicer and funnier (a bit). In addition, a number of free addons will extend the entertainment for another dozens of hours. [Issue#283]
