PERFECT expantion, it fixed every gripe i had with MHW, and bumped it up from a 7 to a 10 for me. 1000 hours of gameplay is enough for my cave-man monster hunting brain to say: "game good, me like".

    - If you don't use it, you will directly be missing out on mechanics, damage and opportunities, making it feel like an obligatory tool to use.

Besides that, it is still definitely worth a buy, and at the very worst, you can ignore the clutch claw like I did until halfway through Iceborne.

My original review was critical of the DLC on release because of the copy n' paste with most the monsters, but with all the free updates and additional monsters; This has been some of the best Monster Hunter content we've ever gotten. Some of the toughest and fun fights I've ever experienced was in this DLC and it was an amazing experience.

It improves upon the base game in every way. No longer is endgame gear like health regen prone to sheer randomness, now you can focus on exactly what you want. While it does take a very long time to get, at least it's not repeating the same fight(s) hundreds of times praying for a hero streamstone for your weapon to drop.

Also Fatalis. Fighting Fatalis, triggering the Dragonator at 3/4

It adds in new combo to each weapon set, a new story, a new variety of armour set (most of the armour set looks AMAZING!), and of course MORE MONSTERS! I hope they continue to support this game.
The only downside to the game is the matchmaking (SOS) which isn't so great but besides that, everything else is great.

After having spent over 500 hours on the base game, I was super excited to play Iceborne.
I certainly wasn't disappointed: the expansion has so much new stuff to do, it's almost like you get a MHW 2! There's a lot of brand new monsters, a story that's about as long as the original one, and with the new hunter rank, you get to kill even all the old monsters again in a stronger version.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been a massive fan of Monster Hunter since I first played monster hunter freedom on my psp. It's one of those games where you can pour in so many hours. To boil down the basics, you play as hutner who hunts monsters, gathers up resources and... that's really it tbh. It's by no means perfect, but despite this, I adore the series as it is.
After spending lots of time on Monster hunter world iceborne, It's safe to say that this expansion pack adds more punch to an already brilliant game. In past games, there will be a re-release of sorts that adds additional content, such as the instance of monster hunter freedom 2 and monster hunter freedom unite. Both are the exact same game, but unite adds nore monsters and quests, alongside with balancing of sorts (e.g. Akantor bow being nerfed). With the advent of consoles, Games can easily have dlc without the hassle of buying the same game (for the most part). So what makes Iceborne special?

Iceborne comes with a new location of Seliana and the hoarfrost reach. As the name implies, it is the 5th gen equivalent of the snowy moutains and the tundra of past games. With new locations also means new monsters, and the game doesn't disappoint. These includes new supecies and variants of past mosnters, returning fan favorates of the Tigerex and the Glavenus, as well as the new Velkana and Beotodus. Whilst it does kind of feel like world didn't have as much post release monsters, save for Deviljho, Kulve Taroth, Lunastra and the crossover monsters (Leshen and the behemoth), its adds in the new master rank quests that futher expands of the variety of armour and weapons you can create, some of which are as badass in appearance. All of the new monsters funcion different to each other, especially in differenation between the species and subspecies. Not only this, but the base monsters in world have new moves, and so do you. Now everyone can use the slinger with their weapon drawn, alongside with the clutch claw.

Being an expansion, like all past games, also introduces significant changes, One of which is the revamping of armour skills, as well as adding new mechanics such as softening monster parts. This is when the cluch claw comes into play. You cling on the enemy, and depening what weapon you use, you get slinger ammo and/or weaken a monster's body part, meaning that you dish out more damage as you attack said part. This is a necessity, since monsters in master rank have higher health, meaning that quests will be longer, depending on your actions and your equipment.

Many of the postives includes said additonal content, but in terms of MHW's gameplay comparison with the older games, it's streamlined to make gathering for resources easier, as well as preparing your equipment of optimal performace. Monsters are more animal like and would become tired after some time, similar to that of Monster hunter tri, making the game more immersive regarless if you are carrying a huge axe that can transform a sword. The addition of SOS does make co-op easier, allowing other hunters to help out if someone needs help. The later game content is vastly enjoyable, with the addtion of the guiding lands, which enables master rank augmentations, alongside a much more enjoyable final boss, who is much harder than the Xeno'jiva.

There are some drawbacks. Some of the weapon designs are bone/iron infused, especailly with the brachydios dual blades and the glavenus greatsword and the longsword, even though it's design is based of the use of those weapons. As well as this, the said additon of SOS trivialises the gathering hub, as 4/5 times, no one is around the hub. Also, the Endgame does feel a bit grindy, but is not as bad as world's endgame with the desire to fight arch tempered monsters, as well as farming for jewels. Speaking of arch tempered monsters, there are spefic weeks where an event quest would pop up. In past games, especially unite, you can download event quests of your choice, such as a G-rank akantor fatalis etc. Therefore, if you miss out in getting a speific armour piece you want, better wait for next week or so.

Either way, Monster hunter world and the expansion pack is a almost-perfect addition that proves how expansion packs should be handled in today's gaming climate. Being someone who is familiar with the series, I am okay with the changes they made, even though some I somewhat don't like (BRING BACK DIOS SLICERS, NOT THOSE CAVEMEN CLUBS!). Capcom pours their heart into this game and it defintely shows. With the recent addtion to the resident evil Crossover and the return of the legendary Rajang, I have good faith of more post game content for Iceborne. Lets hope they do the same with some of their games (Looking at you SFV...).

To put it bluntly, If you like fighting giant bosses and action based games, Monster hunter is the game for you, and with MHW iceborne. It is now easier to get into the series, Now it's the perfect time to dive right in.

The introduction of claw is also interesting more or less. Many new methods to deal with monsters' movements have been created. The gameplay before clear is absolutely fascinating. However, the design of later game period is terrible. Guiding land was absolutely **** I can't understand why it could get through as the main gameplay content after game clear, especially on the basis of their interesting, additive ultimate quests in MH4U and MHGU. In former MH with G expansion, the later gameplay experience is full of challenges of course, but the designs of monsters allowed players to face the challenges. But in MHWI, what I saw was only the repeating experience repeated over and over again. It is still a good expansion for MH of a new age, but regretfully far from great. Expand

The only drawback I’ve found is jumping into guiding lands with randoms or firing an sos from guiding lands doesn’t always work out. Lots of times I’ve jumped into a guiding lands and the session dies immediately or after a single monster hunt. Likewise, I’ve had people join and it not been the monster they want so leave the session. This issue can be solved by playing with friends or lfg.

The graphics, great, monsters are really fun and challenging, the story is ok but nothing special, that’s not what I play this for though. The grinding, crafting and build diversity is what makes this game so satisfying and there is tons of it. I’ve hit master rank 130 and I’m yet to augment my weapons. That’s how much playtime this thing has before you can get a fully optimal build. Want to do this with every weapon? You’re looking at hundreds of hours.

You really get your money’s worth. There are no loot boxes, and devs constantly add new content for free. A true masterpiece of a game, for what it sets out to do, it nails.

If Guiding Lands was better I'd have no problem giving Iceborne a perfect score, but as it's the endgame and a huge part of what you do after the story I sadly have to give Iceborne a 9/10... For now. Other than that there is a lot of love in Iceborne and you can tell the developers put their hearts and souls into this expansion. We're still getting another year of updates and new content so I'm excited for what is to come. There isn't a reason not to buy this expansion if you love MHW. Expand

While this expansion will certainly frustrate new hunters learning the ropes, it gives veterans nearly everything they craved for after finishing the original experience. Capcom continues to do what it does best in this series, improving upon prior efforts to refine these games for an even finer sheen.
