I don't quite understand why everyone is raving about the graphics in this game. Perhaps it's because the last mlb the show game I owned was 09, but I expected far better visuals in this game. It is a marginal step up from 09. Gameplay is fun, but background textures seem rushed, and without much thought or effort. Players still have the same dead eyes, awkward movements, rigid expressions and hair, and lifeless presentation. I may be wrong, but it seems clear to me that this game was made for ps3 and simply ported to ps4. With the ridiculous load times on ps4, and the marginal upgrades from ps3 version, I would say buy the ps3 version this time around, and wait until they actually make a game specifically for ps4 if you really want to be impressed. Hopefully they actually make use of the power and graphic capabilities of the ps4 next time around. Expand

Just like all the screenshots. Very, very impressive. And, due to the clarity and detail it's much easier to just even see the ball. Everything has a very thick look to it. Must be all the polygons. Play the PS4 version for a while then play the PS3 version for a while (if you have it). You'll be amazed. Other than that, also the gameplay seems a bit smoother. More fluid. What people are saying about long load times and infrequent frame rate issues is true though. The load times aren't nearly as long as some people seem to be making it though. Not from what I've experienced anyway. They are technically "long" though. And, the frame rate issues don't really effect the gameplay itself. It just happens once in a while in a replay or something. Not during the actual action of the game though. Again, from what I've experienced. I haven't played online yet but I have heard there are issues with that. Expand

Half the time you can't even see the play while running the bases on offense, resulting on frustrating outs, gamechanger on close games.. It is bearable if you plan to play it casually, but if you plan to buy this game based on online alone, wait for a price drop if anything. The load times are long, but to me is bearable; but noticably worst than past iterations of the show. RTTS is very addicting and very reccomended game mode in the game. MLB 14: The Show looks and sounds amazing, adds some new features to its Road to the Show mode and allows for an excellent Baseball experience. It falls to address its long loading times and lack of innovation in other areas such as it's terrible online connection. Overall, an excellent baseball game, but still could use time in the minors.

I do like how SSD took the time to bring some updates into the franchise mode (the only mode I really play), but sadly they are only incorporated into a broken and confusing "online" franchise I have no desire to play. MLB 14: The Show is a next-gen leap that I have never seen before. Each sports game has its issues. Madden and FIfa didn't improve their games' graphics enough, NBA 2k minimized some of the game modes in order to get those beautiful visuals, and NBA Live, well, just sucked. MLB 14: the Show does not cut corners either visually or in content. The Show has always been the best looking sports game franchise, and this year is no different. The Show improves on already stunning visuals on the PS3 version and the graphics can be so lifelike, if you look about 10 ft. away from the TV, nine times out of ten, you would think you're watching a live MLB broadcast. Not only are the visuals improved greatly, but the gameplay seems a lot more refined than before. MLB 14 has ALL the game modes of the previous games and, surprisingly enough, the online seems quite improved in comparison to previous games. The only complaint I have about the game is the painfully long loading times, but for a game like this, it's worth waiting the extra 30 seconds. Overall, MLB 14: the Show for PS4 could possibly be the best baseball game of all-time. I have never been more impressed in my life with a game like this. Expand

Of course, if you don't own last year's iteration of The Show, you should consider picking this game up as it will have more than enough to keep you satisfied until next season.

What has me blown away is the attention to detail. Ballboys fielding foul balls. Fans walking the isles of the stadium. During gameplay I haven't once noticed the same fan rendered twice on screen. So many different fan models that the stadiums jump to life. New stadiums are beautiful. Player animations are nearly flawless as they have been for years in the MLB The Show series. Another new feature that I have found very useful is the advanced counts (which is optional). This allows each at bat to begin with an advanced count such as 2-1 or 3-2. This allows a full nine inning game to be played in less than half the time of classic gameplay. The advanced count feature is perfect for those who enjoy playing through full 162 game seasons. One improvement that I hope to see in future iterations would be better accuracy on some of the player faces. They don't look horrible by any stretch of the imagination but they quite reach the bar that was set by the NBA 2K series. Another improvement would be the texture detail of the stadium backdrops such as the city landscapes.

If a person is on the fence as far as purchasing MLB The Show 14, I'll leave you with this: I'm a big time Xbox junkie and love my Xbox One. I'm however a huge baseball fan and purchased a PS4 for this game and this game only. I've now put about 4 days into MLB The Show 14 and don't at all regret the $460 that it cost me to play ball!

I have alot of fun with the game and the varying level of difficulty that's involved with each factor of the game (pitching, hitting, etc.) are handled very well for each difficulty level. I do feel like they take away too much control at the beginner level though.
The problems with the game are the very long loading times and the ultra stiff animations that come with the fielding/baserunning portions of the game. The game just doesn't do a good job on both fronts and, when you have to wait almost 3 mins for your game to load up, the load times are downright terrible.
Even so, the game is quite alot of fun and, with each of the players in the game looking very close to their real life counterparts, you really do feel like you're playing a real MLB game. Graphics are top notch, Quick Counts is a God send, and both Franchise & RTTS modes are excellent. My only problem with the game & it's presentation is the commentary can get very repetitive, very quickly. Looking forward to MLB The Show '15.

Great baseball game. The graphics are very good and the gameplay is as well. The player ratings could be better though, and the outfielders seem to make every difficult play, and then miss a lot of simple ones, but it's not big deal. Overall, if you like baseball you'll like this game......

Never ever get this game. This is the worst video game I have ever played. This game glitches all of the time it sucks the players are in accurately rated and all this game does is cause stress.

Let's all agree that we're adults here, and admit that no company is ever going to break the mold or smash the glass ceiling in a sports genre. To negatively review a game for being similar to its predecessors is unfair and ignorant. To negatively review a game for being similar to its predecessors is unfair and ignorant. This is a really fun game - dynamic considerations such as pitcher confidence and fatigue, hot/cold spots for a batter, a stat for clutch performance - which adds just enough human element to make it better than a simulation of the big leagues.

Unfortunately, one of the only major departures from the traditional formula of pick-a-team-and-play is where the game suffers. The "road to the show" mode allows you to play as a prospect from scouting through the minors, which is a realistic and intriguing twist - the only problem is, your player will suck, and the game only allows you to play as him sometimes, which doesn't give you much of a chance to get into a rhythm. You'll occasionally get tossed into a jarring scenario to field a ball, giving you little chance to see what's going on around you before the play happens. Or you'll be placed into the lineup as a pinch hitter in the ninth and get one at-bat. Each time you fail at these one-off endeavors, the game thinks you suck even worse, and soon your team will bench you most games. This is really disappointing, because playing the game is really fun - but when you get basically one at bat per game, it's very hard to get hits. And oh by the way, you'll earn about 7 training points for this, and you need several hundred to level up your skills. Ultimately RTTS ends up being a mess of simulating games until you get to play, waiting for the loading screen, playing one at bat or one play in the field, then the game ending and watching another loading screen to start the whole process again. Maybe I just do genuinely suck, but the game is a little odd - unless you play as a pitcher, and don't mind doing nothing but pitching, which is super easy to succeed at.

One of my favorite mlb games , this game did something that 21 didn't, it made an actual next gen jump with better graphics and better gameplay , it really feels like they put a lot of effort into this game

It's a game in danger of tossing away its decade-long undefeated streak. [July 2014, p.85]

MLB 14: The Show on the PlayStation 4 is about the looks. This is the same franchise as you know it with a next-gen coat of paint, and it looks incredible. Thankfully, it still plays wonderfully too, in large part to the same slick controls and gameplay features we’ve come to know and love.

The Show was clearly on its last legs on the PS3, and the revamped, more true-to-life ballparks infuse some much-needed atmosphere in the series’ PS4 debut. Meanwhile, Road to the Show includes several tweaks that help you create a more dominating prospect. Unfortunately, the player models don’t receive the same level of care, and the game’s online components aren’t on the level of most other sports franchises—issues that absolutely must be addressed going forward.
