Average game. I haven't read any of the books and did not play any Metro game before, that's probably why I didn't really like the story. Also, i know it's a remaster, but the graphics are bad, compared to other PS4 games. Shooting and the whole controls are outdated and it makes the game boring, frustrating and sadly, stereotypical. On the other hand, the variety of weapons is good andAverage game. I haven't read any of the books and did not play any Metro game before, that's probably why I didn't really like the story. Story, difficulty, times it made me sweat - 10/10.

Controls - 5/10. I was going to wait to get this on PC, as I hadn't built my rig yet, but I saw it for a goo deal on the PSN store over the holidays a few years back. I truly have enjoyed playing the game, though the frustration of poorly optimized controls has killed me more times than I care to admit.

I'm probably just stupid but I find it hard to know where to go and that really frustrates me.

I preferred Last Light to Metro 2033, especially the graphics, the stealth and the story. I also prefer fighting humans than strange creatures.
I dont like that there is almost no noise/movement when walking, it really feel unrealistic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A game that flirts with greatness, but ultimately is just above-average. 7.5 / 10

At times both games seem to be frantically-paced FPS's in poorly-lit environments where you'll fight the urge to empty off round after round at shadows in a blind panic. However, when the lighting effects and atmosphere DO work--more so on Last Light redux than Metro 2033 redux--it provides a uniquely claustrophobic and chaotic experience.

(Also, to be honest if a player is really bothered by the lighting effects, they can just crank up the games in-menu brightness so it's never too dim to see everything in your environment.)

Since this is a modern FPS, there will be many scripted moments where characters slowly advance whilst spouting exposition when--if you're like me--you just want to get to the combat. Fortunately the combat is fun when you do get to it, the controls are mostly spot-on, and the story that spans both discs is interesting enough to keep you invested.

Somehow a plot line involving radioactive mutants, nazis, poltergeists, communists, and aliens was well-written enough to not be ridiculous, tongue-in-cheek, or disjointed, and that's can't be easy to write. I'd love to see more Video Games use novels as source material.

Much like another PS4 game I reviewed--Wolfenstein: the New Order--there is no multiplayer at all. While this will put off many players, the fact that you get two whole campaigns to experience adds value. Metro redux is $50 new and offers essential twice as much content as W:TNO, which is the standard $60. Metro is the better deal especially if you're a noob to both games.

Glitchy as all hell. Demons stop flying, night vision doesn't work, enemies give up. Not really much of a horror game either. Spooky stuff happens, but most of the time you'll mow down hoards of people and monsters via unlimited turret fire or your own guns. Most of all though the 'bullet economy' is really stupid. They just rebranded a normal currency and call it bullets. Might as well ofGlitchy as all hell. Demons stop flying, night vision doesn't work, enemies give up. Better than expected! The game has a solid story and interesting weapons and shooting mechanics. The surface sections are outstanding, but all of the Metro tunnels and stations just seemed the same to me. It would have been nice to have some differences to separate them.

Although there are some very cool cinematic set piece battles, the game does have a bad habit of multiple encounters

Although there are some very cool cinematic set piece battles, the game does have a bad habit of multiple encounters with hordes of mutants-which would be great if you didn't have 8 bullets and it takes 10 bullets to the face to kill one of the mutants. What could have been tense is just frustrating and provided some real pacing problems for the story.

There's also one more major issue-the voice acting. Not only is everyone doing a terrible Russian accent, every bit of dialogue has weird inflections and sounds forced. I wound up just setting the dialogue to Russian and reading the subtitles. Real bad.

Worth a play through, though! I'm on to Last Light to see if it's a bit better.

Metro 2033 is a fun game to play with an excellent original story-line. Its actually pretty scary in parts too. The graphics are solid for a remaster of a game that was released 6 years ago. The game is 100% story based with no collectibles or side missions to speak of (not necessarily a bad thing) but as a result the playing time of the game is very short.

The story-line itself is bordering on the crazy but also believable at the same time with humanity all retreating underground in the Metro after nuclear fallout and then end up starting small wars with each other over petty ideology. Throw in an endless supply of disgustingly mutated monsters coming at you from all angles without warning and you have an awesome few hours of fun!

My only gripes really are the small selection of weaponry available and the limited customization allowed on them. Also the somewhat heavy and slow feel to the controls. I had to increase the sensitivity level to maximum and it still felt a little slow, but that may just be me. Overall Metro 2033 is a basic game but has solid graphics and game play, a fantastic original story-line, but ends as quickly as it starts. 7/10.

I loved this game back in a day, decided to play again to see how it holds up.
Sad to declare, it's not that good. To begin with:
Chapters are too short to get involved with the story I don't mind that game is linear, but I would have liked interaction with the world to be less limited There is some getting used to the Pickup area for items, which is small In general, voice acting

In general, voice acting and animations are dated, there is no cohesive story and has really bad writing. Compared to next (Metro Last Light), the story is less interesting and less engaging, especially with no permanent or long enough surviving side characters.
Regarding supernatural, there is way too little (mostly at the end) and story explains almost nothing about it. Ending also is quite frustrating I think.
"Machine gun turret" mission is pretty bad and controls are horrible!
There are several glitches (such as the rangers at the library mission where they dont come) and the AI that sometimes detects you out of nowhere or does not detect at all.
    Deus Ex Machinas everywhere.

    Now the goods:
Game has really nice "feel" of Russian culture (well, in this hypothetical setting)
It is a good introduction to metro series, especially the factions.
    Some dialogue is really funny.
Game design, "realistic" animations and attention to detail is still mind-blowing for a game 10 years+ old.

Finally played this and Metro:Last Light in 2021 when I'd run out of PS4 games to play, and expected an ordinary PS3-era slice of ho-hum fps.

    Damn, was I wrong.

This is not only a great game considering its age, it's a great PS4 game full-stop.

Loved it, and would have preferred to give a 7.5. Played from start to finish, and got it so cheaply from the ps store I feel a bit guilty.

While playing the first 20-30% of the game I just wanted to drop it, but I finished the game and it was not so bad.

Technically it is obsolete even after the remaster - bad graphics, too weak game mechanic, simple and obvious story like from a 2005 year game. I was even angry at some moments because of the game's interface and controls - there is too much everything on the screen and

I was even angry at some moments because of the game's interface and controls - there is too much everything on the screen and you can easy get confused among it before you learn how to use needed components.

The good sides of the game are it's atmosphere and the dipping the more you go through the story. For me the main part of this dipping were the notes in which we learnt the lore of the world.

So I won't play it again, but I will play the next part of series to learn what will happen further.

A more-or-less interesting post-apocalyptic plot set in the metro tunnels beneath Moscow almost manages to cover up the fact that this is a very standard horror shooter with very little to offer aside from some cool lore and a few memorable moments... almost.
