This game is a pile of crap I would avoid stepping on even if I want to stomp it. Weak storyline, re-used graphics assets, weak characters that I don't care about, weak gameplay, weak music, online only and microtransaction galore. Why should I pay money for a save slot? Are you kidding me?!?!?

It is a revenge from Konami to Kojima

Seriously, Metal Gear SURVIVE? This is the garbage that Konami can make without the mastermind, Hideo Kojima, behind the game, and it shows that Konami is in a world of hurt now that they got rid of their most talented artist, and game designer. This is now what we have to look forward to with Konami, and this is why the company will soon meet their demise. This game lacks ANYTHING at all that a Metal Gear game normally has, and it strips away all it can to make this as bare boned, and as heart-less as possible, all a while bringing in all the Microtransactions we all detest.

Congratulations to Konami, for making what looks to be possibly THE worst game in their entire library of titles they ever made. I cannot even fathom what in the WORLD they were thinking when making this thing. I understand, Konami wants a cash cow, but without Kojima, Metal Gear will NEVER be that cash cow for Konami any longer. Konami will now be FORCED to make something of their OWN finally, and see where their OWN imagination takes them, because we now all can see that if Konami is in charge of the Metal Gear series without the magic of Hideo Kojima, it can only end up like this garbage presented with SURVIVE!

With junk like this, I wonder how long Konami will SURVIVE? Not much longer i would assume...

The game is crap, very bland, very boring, very repetitive, and has WAY to many issues with it to be considered anything but a $10 digital title. If they want more from this game, they should include EVERYTHING on the disc with ZERO microtransactions, and charge no more than $19.99 PERIOD!

The dialogues with the AI are irritatingly boring, forcing the player to press a button after every line of dialogue. Bland voice-acting and uninteresting, one-dimensional characters.

All that I could forgive. What I CANNOT forgive is when I'm playing the game, exploring and investing time into the game and I get a message saying that the server can't be reached, and the game is returning to main menu. And then that I can't start the game because it failed to log in to the server.

This is an unforgivable abomination in a single-player playthrough that should not exist.

THEY MAKE YOU SPEND REAL MONEY TO BUY EXTRA SAVE FILES!!!!! Repetitive gameplay with no real variation in enemies. Story mode is a forgettable mess. The game feels like an overpriced FAN made Mod of MGSV. DO NOT BUY EVER.

Not a metal gear game but still manages to be a great game. Mechanics are reused from Metal Gear V but somehow fits the style of game the developers set out to create.

To bad that almost every bad review is Kojima fanboys to the rescue, people talk about buying an extra save file for a new character is a thing, you'll only need to play this game once and be done, anyone saying that this game is bad is saying that MGS5 is bad, but fanboys to busy to see anything.

The game isn't bad, it ain't no award winning game either, play it once and done,

Don't believe the negativity surrounding this game. Yes, there are unnecessary microtransactions, but the game gives you SV points for participating in events, daily logins and occasionally just to do so. Not to mention they don't affect the core gameplay and don't give you an advantage over anyone else playing.

Not to mention they don't affect the core gameplay and don't give you an advantage over anyone else playing.

Yes, Kojima created Metal Gear Solid, but this is not Metal Gear Solid. There have been plenty of other spin-offs that weren't written by Kojima, or even handled by the same dev team. Basically, people that haven't played the game, are getting all of their information from Youtubers that haven't played the game either. Most of the videos are full of disinformation and are created purely for the views/revenue.

That being said, the game is a lot of fun to play. As a spin-off of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, it doesn't feel as full as a numbered MGS title. It has roughly the same graphics as MGSV does, and the same, albeit tweaked to allow for defense placement, controls. But for a $40 game, it's pretty damn good. The story feels a little bland until you get to the end and the voice acting is not very good. If you enjoy coop PVE, though, this is right up your alley.

You'll hear about how it's a "poke a zombie through a fence" simulator, but those people haven't played past the first few missions of the game. Combat gets pretty diverse, and once you reach higher level events/missions, you'll have to plan accordingly. The daily and weekly coop missions include modifiers to the gameplay, a la Destiny heroic strikes.
The developers are also very receptive to the community and actively work to fix known issues with bugs/balance.
Basically, a bunch of children are attempting to murder this game, because of the issues between Kojima and Konami, regardless of the fact that they can choose to ignore it if they don't like it and that a lot of people are actively enjoying it. Also, that Kojima derided them for involving "zombies", when he, himself, made a statement about wanting to create a zombie spin-off of Metal Gear (Metal Gear Rising 2, involving Grey Fox and nanomachine zombies). I am a fan of Kojima's and am really looking forward to Death Stranding. I don't know what happened exactly between him and Konami, but that's between them. It's unfortunate what happened, but it's not really our business.

What gets me, is that the same people **** all over this game are the same ones begging Konami for remakes of the previous titles. What do you think will happen if you actually succeed in Konami discontinuing support for this game? Do you think that the series will go anywhere at all at that point? They're not just going to hand the IP over to Kojima.

But, I trust you to be a decisive individual that doesn't just base their opinions off of the herd mentality that so plagues our current society. Pick it up, try it. If you hate it, then you can refund it. You've got nothing to lose, and only a potentially good time to gain.

Since the time that Hideo Kojima was kicked out after Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Konami has been walking under the flames and receiving booed from the fans and not fans of the producer, in all shapes and forms. Metal Gear Survive is a spin-off, so it isn't tied to the Metal Gear Solid stories and the genre is different. But don't worry, fortunately the DNA (Stealth) of the series hasn't been removed.

As the name of the game suggests, is survival game. In this Metal Gear Survive, the player during the single-player mode will have to explore the map to kill the infected, open containers, hunt animals to feed our avatar's hunger, drink clean or dirty water to quench thirst, activate and use the wormholes to create shortcuts, to make excavations to complete some purpose of the story mode or to obtain some prize, to look for materials to make and to repair certain objects, in fact ... a lot of things to do. This Metal Gear Survive uses the same graphic engine as Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, that is, uses the Fox Engine engine and the gameplay of these titles remains in this Metal Gear Survive, albeit a bit limited by the simple fact of being a survival game. But both are two good points. Too bad that this Metal Gear Survive has copied the scenarios of The Phantom Pain; it was noted that Konami was uninspired in this chapter.

Unfortunately it isn't the only problem in this game, because Konami shoots the microtransactions in our face in a brazen way. Yes, it is true that microtransactions are simply not new today, without forgetting that unfortunately this game requires to be always online. To create a new profile, we must have 1000 SV (10£) or delete the old profile. Other paid elements also influence the gaming experience, such as survival boxes that last a certain time, be it a day, a week, etc.

At the equipment level, the arsenal is vast and we have at our disposal several weapons, including Tacos, Axes, Shovels, Hammers, Guns, Bows, Shotguns, Machine Guns, Molotovs, Grenades, Claymores, Mortars, etc. And we also have very important objects like Distraction, Signal Flag for when we are lost in the poisonous fog (in which we have to be attentive to our air tank), Lanterns, healing sprays, Iron or wooden fences, Wooden barricades with or without the barbed wire, among other things.

There are several types of infected: the normal infected, the Bombers, who easily destroy our defenses and if we kill them without stab them in the back, they will explode like... bombs, we have a type of infected that runs and jumps very fast and we also have infected armed to the teeth that use weapons (weapons that are created in their hands), like machine guns and grenade launchers. They also use shields to reduce damage and are invulnerable when we try to stab them in the back. Of course, we can also face a lot of bosses that are not related to the history missions, and before they try to fight these bosses, it's a good idea to have an excellent arsenal of weapons and equipment, because it will be hell, in a good way.

When we kill the infected, we can collect an energy called Kuban, which can be used to acquire skill points, which can be used to learn special abilities. But Kuban is not just for this, it also serves to slightly increase our oxygen, but in contrast, the durability of our air tank will go down slightly each time we buy it.

The cooperative online mode has been reduced to a simple way of defending the tower, which, along with three more players, we have to build barricades to defend the goal, kill the infected and survive three waves of enemies. It's certainly not part of the campaign, but this mode uses the features we collect in the Single-player.

Unfortunately the story of Metal Gear Survive is something strange and confusing, and the actors who give voice to the characters are nothing more than a simple "ok". The missions are somewhat repetitive; collect databases, save people, defend the excavation towers or the wormholes machines. But not everything is negative in this Metal Gear Survive, the game can even be a survival title due to various elements incorporated into the gameplay, and the cooperative mode can even be fun.

If you are looking for a game with a strong survival component that keeps you entertained for a while, Metal Gear Survive is for you. However, there are too many flaws in this game, and Konami's greed stained this title and the Metal Gear series as a whole.

If the games aren't making enough money, then devs should raise the retail price and/or sell skins and other cosmetic items in game, and/or use a subscription service that the consumer is well aware of before purchase. Blizzard has been using this system successfully for years.

All these new added fees are ridiculous. If I buy a game, I expect to be able to use it unreservedly, and without having to spend more to unlock certain parts of it that are hiding behind a pay-wall.

So for now, no more Konami games for me. At all.

I'll also be boycotting EA games (ultimate team add-ons tied in to in-game trophies; as well as the Battlefront 2 lootbox debacle) and also Capcom based on Street Fighter 5, which I bought incomplete on release and which tried to sell me the characters that should be in the game.

I hope I don't have to add Rockstar to the list. But they're walking a very thin line with this whole GTA V online currency situation.

The point is that if we keep buying, they will keep using these ridiculous stratagems to get our money, instead of working hard to make more games that we could buy. I mean, who could blame them? If we're dumb enough to give them our money, they'd be crazy not to take it!

Metal Gear series is his biggest achievement everyone admired and now here we are playing Metal Gear survive with such heavy feelings. All things aside if you play this game just to have a different experience you might enjoy it a lot like me. If you are a working person who doesn't have a lot of time to kill a single monster for hours(like monster hunter), and if you are a person who like survival horror games, both online co-op and single player campaign is really upbeat and fun, and if you are looking for a new hype just for $39 instead of $59, I totally recommend this game. Fox engine used in this game is amazing, killing zombies with variety of ways feels awesome, game mechanics work perfect and feels like you are actually hitting/stabbing the zombie literally. Yes it is repetitive, yes first few hours is really hard to survive, yes it has flaws such as having very few kind of enemies, yes having an extra save slot shouldn't cost that much game points, yes online co-op needs to have more new maps, and the off game screen interfaces(crafting items screen, healing yourself) are not easy to navigate. But in the end I play this game everyday for half an hour or so, sometimes co-op sometimes continuing the story and it still entertains me a lot since I got it a month ago Expand

Everything is original, story mode is very artistic, extremely meaningful content (allowed me to reflect on life and make a change for the better) - very original overall, very good UI/HUD and even better controls than any game ever.

Please bear with me for a moment as I'll explain why this game isn't as bad as it seems, I'm rating the game on it's own rather than giving a free 0 for protesting, I still hate Konami though.

    First, the good.
MG:S tries to follow the lead of Phantom Pain on matters of style, more than the gameplay and map, the campaign is as convoluted, giving you a fair amount of cutscenes, dialog and tapes from where you can learn more about the world and the "Wanderers" which is way more than I expected personally, I specially like the twists, they're not as expected as you may think at first, nothing exceptional, this is not MGS3 leveles by any means, but competent, is worth exploring further? Not really.

Gameplay-wise, you get the regular survival mechanics, thirst, hunger, stamina, life and oxygen. At first, you will probably get distracted looking for food desperately, so keep that in mind when you begin and you'll have no issues, melee weapons may feel tricky at first, but they're not bad at all, and it gets easier to handle as you level up and spend your skill points in unique skills per type of weapon, stats and character skills.

Graphics are okay, I mean, it looks like Phantom Pain would have looked like if it was made for current gen only, but still, not the best use of FOX Engine, Phantom Pain / Ground Zeroes still look more apealing. The maps are smaller than the MGSV maps, but they're not exactly the same, you will genuinely get lost in there and see new areas and buildings that are completely new or different, of course almost every asset is something you've already seen, but used in different and many time interesting ways, a map expansion would be nice though, I was expecting to see places like the palace, OKB Zero, nova braga airport, etc, I'd like to see these maps expanded and maybe bring map MGO maps, hell, even new maps based on older games would be awesome, but I wouldn't expect any of that on a realistic way.

Multiplayer is pretty good until you play all that's there, it's a good way to get materials and blueprints, but Konami needs to bring big updates to support both single and multiplayer, otherwise this game is not going to live long, warning.
MTX, the big **** move, charging for save files is as stupid as charging to play multiplayer (I'm looking at you, Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus) but there is a not as dark side to all this, daily rewards follow the MGSV path, giving you SV Coins randomly, in MGSV I could get all 3 FOB's and some cosmetics in MGO without paying a cent, twice. I expect to be able to buy all 3 save slots without paying, but you don't need to wait, use your secondary account and you're good. Thankfully, it isn't pay to win nor a casino (Battlefront 2...)

I cannot say this is a bad title, is it a bad Metal Gear Spin off? not even that, it's in a bad spot, no good PR could ever go to this game, we all hated Konami for the pachinko Silent Hill and MGS3, we all hated them for mistreating Kojima and the rest of employees, we all hated them for pushing MGSV incomplete, and I bet we all still do, it is true that if you dislike the company that made it, anything will look far worse than it actually is.

Thankfully, Kojima is doing what he wants now.
Hopefully, the hostages Konami has, aka the old Kojima Productions, get a better job in another company

Hopefully, Konami dies alongside EA and the videogame industry snap out of the BS we've been enduring since 2014.

And don't forget, Konami, there's still another fanbase hating you every day, Silent Hill fans were upset by the SHs cancellation and even more with Book of Memories, even the HD Collection even all the way back with SH4 when we learned that you didn't want to give freedom to the team to end the series in a high note and forced them to transform Room 302 into SH4 only to fire most of them afterwards, you will not get away from the stigma anytime soon, let's see how long you can live with pachinko machines, yu gi oh and PES.

This is not a bad game.
Bad games are games like Umbrella Corps, Destiny 2, Sonic 2006, Godzilla PS4, Life of black tiger, etc.

One last thing, about this online only stuff.
You don't need a P$Plus suscription to play singleplayer, but you need to be always online either way, this is up to your perspective, I personally like to not worry about having no connection and play my games without problem, but if I'm having issues with my connection, even Fallout 4 works like crap, and many times, i don't even bother and I just play PS3, PS4 and any current platform it's always online pretty much, so yeah, I think this is the least of our problems, though I would appreciate and offline mode, even if my progress is separate from my online character like in black ops 3, just let me do it.

Expand

If you ever played a survival game (ARK, Rust, 7 Days 2 Die, Fortnight save the world etc) and thought "this is fun, but its a broken mess" Metal Gear Survive is the game for you. There really isn't any other survival /crating game that is this polished, sure its an asset flip of The Phantom pain, but Phantom pain is one of the most amazing games of all time, so that's a solid foundation. If you ever played a survival game (ARK, Rust, 7 Days 2 Die, Fortnight save the world etc) and thought "this is fun, but its a broken mess" Metal Gear Survive is the game for you. Many people hate this game for the politics surrounding it and the some what greedy micro transaction model, but not of that has effected my enjoyment of the game. Its a very solid title, even my wife likes it and she is very hard to please. it really deserves an 8/10 but i will give it a 10 to combat all the 0s from people who probably didn't even play it Expand

The game is simply awful and not playable. Kojima is crying as he is watching the Konami massacre!!!

This game isnt nearly as bad as some have reviewed. And no this game wasnt kojimas idea like pear had stated. Kojima said in an interview that his idea of a metal gear game is political espionage. That being said aside from its flaws fun can be had once you get over the stupid microtransactions and kojima misguided loyalty

A disgraceful rip off of a once great franchise. If Konami doesn't care about making games anymore because they believe that there is better profit in slot machine business, let this garbage be the first step of their exit of the gaming industry.

You see... Even without Kojima, Konami had a great opportunity to milk this franchise to their hearts content. But for some reason, God knows why, they decided to jump on the "Zombie Wagon" and destroy what the Metal Gear franchise constructed over the years.

There is no need to say much here. The game overall is completely sh*t.

Let Konami burn to the ground!

The game is mediocre at best (as a stand alone game) but as a Metal Gear game it's really bad, even if it is just a spin off it's still bad, and what pissed me off the most is the inclusion of the scene from MGS V Ground Zero at the beginning...like why?

I initially bought in to all the hate surrounding this title being a huge MGSV and kojima fan. I did start to hear good things about the game amidst all the criticism and now having played it I can say that it is actually an awesome game. Its pretty sad to see it get so much hate. This review was my sole purpose for joining metacritic.

This is probably one of the worst ways you could waste your time, even if you aren't a fan of the Metal Gear series, there is objectively nothing to gain from playing this. The game-play is repetitive and boring, recycling useless stealth mechanics from Metal Gear Solid V in a zombie survival game. There is no real narrative to this game at all, no satisfaction for completing this gameThis is probably one of the worst ways you could waste your time, even if you aren't a fan of the Metal Gear series, there is objectively nothing to gain from playing this. The game-play is repetitive and boring, recycling useless stealth mechanics from Metal Gear Solid V in a zombie survival game. There is no real narrative to this game at all, no satisfaction for completing this game since you don't even get to leave this alternate dimension, and no point to anything you're doing. Mass Effect: Andromeda, a game that is objectively unfinished and broken is more fulfilling - and a more faithful adaptation than this "game."

And then the kicker that everyone's been rightfully outraged about: the endless and unnecessary amount of micro-transactions that limit your saves and inventory. I don't think I need to try and explain why this is not okay.

If you are one of those people that are considering buying this game or bought it and legitimately enjoyed it, please raise your standards and look elsewhere, you deserve better than the Konami treatment and are better off finding other games, and if you think buying this game will support Metal Gear developers, then I'm sorry to say but that wont happen, I wouldn't be surprised if Konami demoted them by now given how shady their practices have been as of late.

Left 4 Dead is good if you want an actual zombie game, The Last of Us 2 is coming out fairly soon if you want a brand new survival game, and Monster Hunter World is apparently at a 1,000% better value than this game considering you have more free saves and a 500x bigger inventory.

I had read about this game and I was a bit sad about all the bad reviews. I started up the game with low expectations. I was really surprised when it turned out to be a really addicting game. It is great fun and I can't stop playing. It is like fallout, without the humour and good music. You build your own base and build up a crew. How to do stuff, like change ammo or give medicine to your crew is not logic. It takes a while to understand it, but this game is SO fun!
I don't get the bad reviews. I haven't paid for anything in the game. No need.
Also the story is quite surprising!
So, if you like to survive, explore, gather and shoot (or fight) this is your game.

Убожество, а не игра. Это просто какая то первоапрельская шутка которая очень сильно затянулась. Конами превратился в кучу дымящегося коровьего дерьма.

Hands down, easily, the worst game of the 2010s. Heck, I'd go as far as to say it's the worst game of all time, especially with it's heinous micro transactions and 10 dollars for an additional save slot.

I don't even have to talk about the game itself to prove to you that this is the worst game of all time.
Video games are art because they allow people to create a digital world based off the creators imagination. They're art because the developer makes the game for the satisfaction of creating your world how you want to, telling a story, sharing your views in a unique way. It's amazing.

Metal Gear Survive... Is not one of those. The second you see content blocked behind a paywall, privileges such as a second save file, and a SINGLE microtransaction, that should prove that the publisher isn't interested in making the game of their dreams. They have no passion behind their project if they're just looking to make easy money. So why should anyone have to show appreciation for them? If they don't care, why should I?
Konami, you were one of the ultimate developers back then, but now, you're for a fact THE worst company ever when it comes to gaming. You have employees go through hell to make your games, you kill beloved franchises that made Konami #1, you bite the hands that fed you, and you harassed a former employee, forbidding him to take his award for a game he spent thousands of hours on. You deserve ALL the flack you get from the community and more.

Alright, the game itself, it's mere existence is a slap in the face to the fan base of a masterpiece of a franchise known as Metal Gear. But even the actually game is nothing special. Forgettable story, bland characters, sluggish and stiff gameplay, bad graphics, dry voice acting. The game is so bad it doesn't even deserve the attention it gets for being so bad. The only reason Konami thought this game would do anything for them was because they hopped they could get some ppl buying the game because the Metal Gear name is on the box. But gamers know better. Shame on you Konami. The world would be better off if you had just went away and stopped trying.
For the mess that Metal Gear Survive is, it deserves a lower score than a 0/10. Do not buy this game, even on a Steam sale. Not for a short weekend. Not even worth free. Keep this game away from your library.

It's a fun take on the survival genre. The game is a little on the short side for me. I had a lot more fun with this than MGSV. It seems to me it's a cool spin-off however it doesn't add much to the saga. The store is an obvious cash grab as the game itself. Sadly Kojima fans will absolutely hate it.

What can i even say about this game? Not only that it turn out to be the desastrous lunch and a bigger of a disgrace spinoff for the entire franshise but also an insult to the loyal fans from the original metal gear till the Phantom Pain came out back in 2015. Screw KONAMI. Hope they can learn from this, big time.

The only good thing was the intention, but the execution was horrible. I just find it torture to play this for more than 3 hours, an extremely tiring, slow and repetitive game.

Is Metal Gear Survive worth it? Oh yeah, totally. Game of the Year. Honestly, I don’t know why you haven’t bought it yet! Death Stranding won’t be able to compete with this. Sarcasm aside, don’t buy this game, just don’t. Yeah, the environments and visuals are kind of neato and the feeling of helplessness certainly comes across, but it’s just a clusterf**k.

Somewhat cynical and clearly a little low budget, it isn't always easy to pull for Survive. Thankfully, some of the best wave combat on PS4 saves the day. [Apr 2018, p.91]

The whole existence of Metal Gear Survive closely resembles this of the Wanderers – the game’s zombies. With the story, characters and wit ripped out completely off it’s body, what remains is a lifeless yet standing shell of Metal Gear Solid V. The decent (and borrowed) survival mechanics barely keep this husk walking around aimlessly with no purpose whatsoever. Survive may not be a bad survival game, but the merciless grind required and lack of respect for gamers’ time are inexcusable.
