The game is a "horror" version of Metal Gear, with nanomachine zombies. (Yes, the idea that Kojima himself had for a MG spin-off. Let that sink in, fanboys.) The gameplay takes inspiration from MGS3 (Survival elements such as eating wildlife you hunt and having to treat your injuries with medical supplies), and Peace Walker (goofy looking CQC and animations in general). The soundtrack is phenomenal. It sounds much, MUCH closer to the classic MGS style of music. Not that crap from TPP.

Can't wait to see Death Stranding gameplay. (a.k.a., Metal Gear Survive 2.) I wonder what people will say about that, even if it looks the same as Metal Gear Survive..

Take the Metal Gear out of the title and you have a solid survival game for a reduced price which more than makes up for the recycled assets, because on top of that they added in a few new mechanics that MGSV could have benefited from, such as the Bow mechanics as well as Spear combat. I decided to ignore all the media controversy and reviews and give it a try myself... and I'm pleasantly surprised. The game is fun, the story is engaging (enough, anyway). I'm actually having a blast with it.

It's surprisingly more singleplayer focused than the trailers make it look. Multiplayer is basically Fortnite's PVE mode (with the over the top Metal Gear spin).

The SP campaign is pretty intense, though it s a slow and often tedious start. You will feel like you're constantly short on food, water, oxygen and supplies for awhile but slowly you begin to claw your way out of **** and start being able to really fight back against the world of Dite.

I don't think this is a game for everyone and there are some boneheaded choices (like extra character slots being pay to unlock), but you also don't really need the character slots. Your single character can do it all (ala Monster Hunter), and can even be fully recustomized in look at any time. There are no intrusive microtransactions, no loot boxes, no pay to win. The game legitimately feels complete. The melee combat is clunky until you unlock some more moves (ESPECIALLY THE DODGE) but after awhile it feels fun to blow through some Wanderers while riding on the back of a personal mech.

Now there is the issue of Weapon Storage/Loadouts also being locked behind a paywall but I personally haven't had it effect me - I don't tend to stockpile a ton of stuff and use what I have. I break down older gear once I have something more reliable to replace it with and it has kept me more flush with resources and with plenty of storage.

The TL;DR is all the micotransaction stuff is legitimately for convenience sake, and the core game itself is not touched by them.

Wow! Despite the controversy, I had very high expectations for this game. I'm a HUGE fan of Metal Gear V and the team who worked on Survive is made up of mostly the same people (minus Kojima of course). My expectations have been surpassed. My expectations have been surpassed. If you enjoy slow-paced, survival games, then you must try Survive. If you enjoy zombie games (even though these aren't techically zombies) then I highly recommend this game.

There have been so many tense moments that have kept me immersed and entertained. Some might be frustrated by the constant need for food and water. It is far more forgiving than say "Don't Starve" or "The Long Dark", but scavenging and hunting for food and water are a key part of the gameplay so if that is not your thing, you might want to stear clear of Survive. Another source of tension is the "dust" which covers most of the games open world. You have limited oxygen which adds yet another challenge. Not to mention the possiblity of getting lost in the dust, or overrun by Wanderers. The games systems are plentiful and intricate and produce a great experience.

The story is actually pretty darn good. In edition to a few good cutscense, "codec style" conversations as well as audio logs you find that can be listened to as you play (simular to MGSV). It's simple and leaves you alone for long periods of time in favor of focusing on gameplay, but the plot is well thought out. It has many referances to the Divine Comedy which is fun as well as some real-world conspiricies like the Philadelphia Experiment. My main complaint is the A.I. Virgel being deadpan and slow-talking.

The co-op tower-defense mode is a complete change of pace. It is an absolute blast with friends! I'm uncertain of the replayability of it, but my friends and I played upwards of 14 hours in the beta on just 2 maps! The full game has quite a bit more so I'm willing to bet theres quite a bit of fun to still be had.

Now the downside...The menus and controls. They aren't "terrible", but they take a LOT of getting used to. Particularly if you're on keyboard/mouse like myself. Do yourself a favor and use a controller. I've already adjusted and the percision of the mouse has its advantages, but Survive was obviously designed with controllers in mind.

Overall, great game and amazing value at 40 bucks on release!

Much like how pokemon pinball has pokemon in it, and you catch, level up, and evolve them, all the makings of a pokemon game,
you wouldn't call it a pokemon game in the same way you would call pokemon emerald a pokemon game.

In the same way, Metal Gear Survive has stealth, infiltration, and what for some might be a satisfying story (more on that later), It is not fair to call it a main game in the Metal Gear series.
Is it a good Metal Gear game? From the playtime i've experienced, (Both my own, and that of footage i've watched.) I'd say it is. It might not be what people would call a good Metal Gear SOLID game,
but it uses the metal gear universe well, established history, iconic figures, and so forth.

Food and water drain a little faster then i'd feel comfortable with (our guy must have one HELLUVA metabolism) but it puts the pressure on to _SURVIVE_

Menus, though? Dear god the menus.
For instance, the base building? To move the cursor around, you need to hold down control while you move the mouse. Just moving the mouse around itself ROTATES the camera.

    and the options are horrible.
Dear god are the options horrible.
Under 'sound' the only toggleable setting, indeed, the only setting AT ALL is if you want to have automatic voice chat or not.

And it's 'Valid' or 'Invalid' as the options.

    The menus need work.

Luckily, it doesn't detract from what I've enjoyed as a pretty solid game. I'm gonna be playing the hell outta it. The story seems decent enough so far, though I will say it's a DAMN good thing this isn't a Solid game, or I'd laugh at them.

What's sad is I would expect more couth and respect from former Metal Gear fans these days. I have been playing Metal Gear since the MSX and have followed MG: Survive's creation from the start. All I have seen through social media are people jumping back on the tired old dead bandwagon of hate that they more than likely know nothing about. Sure, you can read all the articles these social media pages push out for attention, but all you're reading is puffed up anger towards a video game company that gets the message. We get it, I get it, everyone gets it. You're mad at Konami because they fired Kojima over a disagreement. Whether that be an artistic or financial difference, that was up to them. It is over now.

What's pathetic is these so called fans are creating accounts on here just to bash a game they don't even own. Konami owns the rights to the IP now, they stated it is a spin-off from the very start (so that the fans don't get their panties in a knot) and are trying to create something great with an engine that was excellent. if you don't like it, don't buy it. Move on. Your money speaks louder than you making fake accounts or posting on social media any chance you get just to get some attention no better than these desperate FB pages fishing for attention creating false circumstance.

If you love him so much, be like Kojima. Just like he was able to move on and do something else with his life, you can do the same. Literally no one on this planet cares if you dislike the game especially on forums that are trying to link players who actually own the game together to have fun. Here's a news tip, Konami actually doesn't have Kojima locked up in a basement where they whip him all day and for every copy of Survive you buy, they whip him more. Also, people who worked on prior Metal Gears, Gradius, Castlevania, etc still are affiliated or work for Konami. When you sit there and bash the company every second you get (because you clearly have nothing else with your time) you're bashing people who put their heart out there and made something decent in the gaming industry for decades before you probably even knew they existed. Also, it may come as a shock to you, but Kojima was not the only person who made the Metal Gear games! Wow, could you have imagined that!? Yeah, he didn't create literally every aspect of every MG game! Sorry, I had to say that because people forget that it takes a TEAM of people to create a massive project like any of the MG's. Don't disrespect them and destroy their legacy because you treat Kojima, a guy who doesen't even know your name, like a god as if something like what happened between him and Konami has never happened before in the gaming industry.

As for Survive itself? It's an excellent game. In terms of spin-off's for the MG series, it makes Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance look like Club Penguin. Survive does NOT play or feel like a typical zombie shooter (because y'know, you'd have to buy the game to know that), it is a desperate struggle for survival in an alternate dimension that actually feels and plays great. The sneaking factor is there more than ever, the game does not baby you through it, the story feels refreshing, the controls are excellent and smooth, the micro-transactions are completely irrelevant just like Phantom Pain only had them to boost time, the game was $20 cheaper than any normal retail game. What more could you want, the list goes on. Konami designed this game knowing that people were upset that they screwed up and tried to make it in the favor of the consumer entirely and it worked out very well.

I know this is not a story written by Kojima and I respect it. They are not re-branding his legacy. Accept it and move on. Remember the series for what it was whether you like the new material or not. Be an adult, be a patriot and stop acting like children over a game. I expected this backlash over a game like Halo or COD, but seriously? Don't call yourself an MG fan if you have a hard time distinguishing the old from the new and every time you see a post about Survive you need a box of tissues and a diaper to make it through the day.

i think it feels like they combined resident evil and snake eater. it might use the same engine as mgsVTPP but its more if they used the healing, hunting and eating from snake eater, used resident evil 4 or 5 combat and put it onto the fox engine because thats their latest engine. i agree that the thirst and hunger bar is kinda annoying but i let it pass because its survive and not solid. the combat is nice but sometimes feels BS because i poke em with the spear but i don't hit em and they hit me with their short arms and instantly hit me. i love the base builder and when i unlock something it feels like i actually earned it. i love how you have to think before taking action. like: am i gonna make this?, do i have the resources to do that? and is this the best way to do it? i remember that i used to run around swinging my shovel at the wanderers and hoping for the best. later i saw a big horde and decided to think before doing anything. i decided to try sneaking past and use bottles to distract them and it worked. this made me use my brain before doing anything. ask yourself these questions. not gonna lie but there are many bad things but they didn't hit me that hard. i hate the food and thirst and how fast it goes down but after getting the farms and hanging pot nothing was a big issue like at the beginning of the game. you start with nothing and have to drink dirty water and if u were lucky, find clean water. then gaining more and more til the point where food and water is not an issue anymore. the game is a zombie game where you start with nothing and grow stronger.

remember that this is no metal gear solid game, this is metal gear survive. its a reason they didn't have solid in the name because it has something new to offer. that is why metal gear rising revengeance doesn't have solid in the name. because it has the sword battle which makes it feel like a brand new series. adding solid to the name would make original fans think that this is like the other games. removing solid form the name make it shine as its own thing while the others can stand solid.

i think if you played the first hours and hated it then just play more and it will get fun. o think you should wait til the game goes on sale or just buy one cheap on the internet. i bought mine for 15$ and it came with dlc code and it was unopened. probably why i like it so much more because i got it cheap and it feels like i got what i paid for.

Metacritic you really need to look in how reviews are done on here. Out of the 800 reviews only about 100 have actually played the game. The other 700 are from ignorant people who just listen to the hate filled youtubers(people are driven to hate) and regurgitate it without reason. This generation of "SJW gamers" is just sickening.

Honestly an amazing survival game that's a ton of fun. If it didn't have the metal gear name associated with it, it would be doing much better in the reviews. Took a couple points off for some of the micro-transaction stuff, but honestly its not even that bad. As usual people are blowing this up to more than it is. You might have to pay for extra save slots, but I haven't found a need forHonestly an amazing survival game that's a ton of fun. Not a metal gear game but still manages to be a great game. Mechanics are reused from Metal Gear V but somehow fits the style of game the developers set out to create.

To bad that almost every bad review is Kojima fanboys to the rescue, people talk about buying an extra save file for a new character is a thing, you'll only need to play this game once and be done, anyone saying that this game is bad is saying that MGS5 is bad, but fanboys to busy to see anything.

The game isn't bad, it ain't no award winning game either, play it once and done,

Don't believe the negativity surrounding this game. Yes, there are unnecessary microtransactions, but the game gives you SV points for participating in events, daily logins and occasionally just to do so. Not to mention they don't affect the core gameplay and don't give you an advantage over anyone else playing.

Yes, Kojima created Metal Gear Solid, but this is not Metal Gear Solid.

Not to mention they don't affect the core gameplay and don't give you an advantage over anyone else playing.

Yes, Kojima created Metal Gear Solid, but this is not Metal Gear Solid. There have been plenty of other spin-offs that weren't written by Kojima, or even handled by the same dev team. Basically, people that haven't played the game, are getting all of their information from Youtubers that haven't played the game either. Most of the videos are full of disinformation and are created purely for the views/revenue.

That being said, the game is a lot of fun to play. As a spin-off of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, it doesn't feel as full as a numbered MGS title. It has roughly the same graphics as MGSV does, and the same, albeit tweaked to allow for defense placement, controls. But for a $40 game, it's pretty damn good. The story feels a little bland until you get to the end and the voice acting is not very good. If you enjoy coop PVE, though, this is right up your alley.

You'll hear about how it's a "poke a zombie through a fence" simulator, but those people haven't played past the first few missions of the game. Combat gets pretty diverse, and once you reach higher level events/missions, you'll have to plan accordingly. The daily and weekly coop missions include modifiers to the gameplay, a la Destiny heroic strikes.
The developers are also very receptive to the community and actively work to fix known issues with bugs/balance.
Basically, a bunch of children are attempting to murder this game, because of the issues between Kojima and Konami, regardless of the fact that they can choose to ignore it if they don't like it and that a lot of people are actively enjoying it. Also, that Kojima derided them for involving "zombies", when he, himself, made a statement about wanting to create a zombie spin-off of Metal Gear (Metal Gear Rising 2, involving Grey Fox and nanomachine zombies). I am a fan of Kojima's and am really looking forward to Death Stranding. I don't know what happened exactly between him and Konami, but that's between them. It's unfortunate what happened, but it's not really our business.

What gets me, is that the same people **** all over this game are the same ones begging Konami for remakes of the previous titles. What do you think will happen if you actually succeed in Konami discontinuing support for this game? Do you think that the series will go anywhere at all at that point? They're not just going to hand the IP over to Kojima.

But, I trust you to be a decisive individual that doesn't just base their opinions off of the herd mentality that so plagues our current society. Pick it up, try it. If you hate it, then you can refund it. You've got nothing to lose, and only a potentially good time to gain.

As a fan of Metal Gear series, including spin-offs, I appreciated the plot of this game. I didn't really appreciate the frustrating survival gameplay. But the plot is enjoyable for open-minded Metal Gear fans.

Well well well. I wish Konami did not send Kojima away, I wish they respected his progress and what he has done for the gaming world. I wish they supported him all the way. Metal Gear series is his biggest achievement everyone admired and now here we are playing Metal Gear survive with such heavy feelings. All things aside if you play this game just to have a different experience you might enjoy it a lot like me. If you are a working person who doesn't have a lot of time to kill a single monster for hours(like monster hunter), and if you are a person who like survival horror games, both online co-op and single player campaign is really upbeat and fun, and if you are looking for a new hype just for $39 instead of $59, I totally recommend this game. Fox engine used in this game is amazing, killing zombies with variety of ways feels awesome, game mechanics work perfect and feels like you are actually hitting/stabbing the zombie literally. Yes it is repetitive, yes first few hours is really hard to survive, yes it has flaws such as having very few kind of enemies, yes having an extra save slot shouldn't cost that much game points, yes online co-op needs to have more new maps, and the off game screen interfaces(crafting items screen, healing yourself) are not easy to navigate. But in the end I play this game everyday for half an hour or so, sometimes co-op sometimes continuing the story and it still entertains me a lot since I got it a month ago Expand

Metal Gear Survive - a very well made game that entertains the player to the fullest extent and allows them to reflect on life.

Everything is original, story mode is very artistic, extremely meaningful content (allowed me to reflect on life and make a change for the better) - very original overall, very good UI/HUD and even better controls than any game ever.

Best game of the century by far.

Great game. Not a 10 but definitely not 1.5. You can tell by the score how bias certain people are with their score. Play the game for yourself and you'll definitely be happy with this game and the hundreds of hours it provides compare to other games which are 4 to 6 hours to finish. Cheers!

If you ever played a survival game (ARK, Rust, 7 Days 2 Die, Fortnight save the world etc) and thought "this is fun, but its a broken mess" Metal Gear Survive is the game for you. There really isn't any other survival /crating game that is this polished, sure its an asset flip of The Phantom pain, but Phantom pain is one of the most amazing games of all time, so that's a solid foundation. If you ever played a survival game (ARK, Rust, 7 Days 2 Die, Fortnight save the world etc) and thought "this is fun, but its a broken mess" Metal Gear Survive is the game for you. Many people hate this game for the politics surrounding it and the some what greedy micro transaction model, but not of that has effected my enjoyment of the game. Its a very solid title, even my wife likes it and she is very hard to please. it really deserves an 8/10 but i will give it a 10 to combat all the 0s from people who probably didn't even play it Expand

I initially bought in to all the hate surrounding this title being a huge MGSV and kojima fan. I did start to hear good things about the game amidst all the criticism and now having played it I can say that it is actually an awesome game. Its pretty sad to see it get so much hate. This review was my sole purpose for joining metacritic.

Soy el fan numero 1 de Metal Gear conocido por Dios. Los Kojimistas están sufriendo por lo que le esta pasando a Death Stranding. Existe un dicho nunca escupas para arriba.

Is Metal Gear Survive worth it? Oh yeah, totally. Game of the Year. Honestly, I don’t know why you haven’t bought it yet! Death Stranding won’t be able to compete with this. Sarcasm aside, don’t buy this game, just don’t. Yeah, the environments and visuals are kind of neato and the feeling of helplessness certainly comes across, but it’s just a clusterf**k.

Somewhat cynical and clearly a little low budget, it isn't always easy to pull for Survive. Thankfully, some of the best wave combat on PS4 saves the day. [Apr 2018, p.91]

The whole existence of Metal Gear Survive closely resembles this of the Wanderers – the game’s zombies. With the story, characters and wit ripped out completely off it’s body, what remains is a lifeless yet standing shell of Metal Gear Solid V. The decent (and borrowed) survival mechanics barely keep this husk walking around aimlessly with no purpose whatsoever. Survive may not be a bad survival game, but the merciless grind required and lack of respect for gamers’ time are inexcusable.
