    The only good thing was the intention, but the execution was horrible. I just find it torture to play this for more than 3 hours, an extremely tiring, slow and repetitive game.

    This game is a pile of crap I would avoid stepping on even if I want to stomp it. Weak storyline, re-used graphics assets, weak characters that I don't care about, weak gameplay, weak music, online only and microtransaction galore. Why should I pay money for a save slot? Are you kidding me?!?!?

    I've been hooked on this the past few days! Can't believe I let you tubers put me off! The game is so fun! If you like fallout base building stuff and zombies this game is for you! I hope they bring out more content, but I highly doubt it given it's reception.

The opener to the game is so brutally slow and nonsensical, it’s like they don’t even want you to play it. If they wanted to do MGS survival, the recipe seems pretty simple: make it like snake eater, a soldier lost in the forest surrounded by tribal enemies or even zombies. But a totally wacko sci-fi hell portal full of dust storms? I just don’t get any of it.    … Expand

    And yet another series I loved died painfully. Why, Konami? Why do I have to pay for save slots? Why is the game this repetitive? Why is the game THIS much of a bugfest? Why couldn't you be bothered to make some semi-functional AI in a AAA game released in 2018?

    I hope you're happy, Konami. You've successfully ruined Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Contra and your reputation. Conrats.

    Awesome game! Great story, gameplay is way more detailed than MGSV and just better story overall, great I would buy it anytime again, can't wait for a sequel! Kojima overrated, just best zombie killing fence game! Konami fu**ing sucks gorilla a*s d*ck! I love it

    i like this game. i understand why many people hate it, with the boring start but the boredom is far away once you get forward in the game. i feel like the first couple of hours is a tutorial for whats coming up. the game really gets fun later and i think that all these reviewers that think its boring only played the first hours. i like that the game is trying something different.

    i think it feels like they combined resident evil and snake eater. it might use the same engine as mgsVTPP but its more if they used the healing, hunting and eating from snake eater, used resident evil 4 or 5 combat and put it onto the fox engine because thats their latest engine. i agree that the thirst and hunger bar is kinda annoying but i let it pass because its survive and not solid. the combat is nice but sometimes feels BS because i poke em with the spear but i don't hit em and they hit me with their short arms and instantly hit me. i love the base builder and when i unlock something it feels like i actually earned it. i love how you have to think before taking action. like: am i gonna make this?, do i have the resources to do that? and is this the best way to do it? i remember that i used to run around swinging my shovel at the wanderers and hoping for the best. later i saw a big horde and decided to think before doing anything. i decided to try sneaking past and use bottles to distract them and it worked. this made me use my brain before doing anything. ask yourself these questions. not gonna lie but there are many bad things but they didn't hit me that hard. i hate the food and thirst and how fast it goes down but after getting the farms and hanging pot nothing was a big issue like at the beginning of the game. you start with nothing and have to drink dirty water and if u were lucky, find clean water. then gaining more and more til the point where food and water is not an issue anymore. the game is a zombie game where you start with nothing and grow stronger.

    remember that this is no metal gear solid game, this is metal gear survive. its a reason they didn't have solid in the name because it has something new to offer. that is why metal gear rising revengeance doesn't have solid in the name. because it has the sword battle which makes it feel like a brand new series. adding solid to the name would make original fans think that this is like the other games. removing solid form the name make it shine as its own thing while the others can stand solid.

    i think if you played the first hours and hated it then just play more and it will get fun. o think you should wait til the game goes on sale or just buy one cheap on the internet. i bought mine for 15$ and it came with dlc code and it was unopened. probably why i like it so much more because i got it cheap and it feels like i got what i paid for.    … Expand

I’ve tried to get into it but I’m tired of seeing the server logging in messages and I can’t stand the constant verbal garbage reminding me to rest or eat.     Si le hubieran puesto otro nombre estaria mejor ya que en este juego ni sigilo ni accion ni nada que caracterisa un metal gear, el unico sigilo es no hacer ruido para evitar que esos bicho te escuchen pero ni eso puedes pasar como si nada.

Big boss escapes in the opening cutscene, and he is right to do so. There's no stealth. No memorising patrol routes. No ludicrous cold war plot. No lengthy cutscenes. Basically you're surviving on your own in a hostile world, to find a group of soldiers who went there earlier. Maybe if they arrive, with all their numbers and weapons and tech, and ended up dead, I would not have much of a chance on my own with nothing but the clothes I stand in? But I am sent anyway. So, the plot starts and straight away you are introduced to an annoying computer. No, make that two computers, making an annoying partnership. Always telling you what to do. I would rather Miller or some other metal gear character be guiding my path, not some tiresome AI. So straight away I am looking for food. I kill some sheep. And I refill my plastic water bottle with dirty water. Just so I can survive. Pretty basic stuff. Not only that, but as this is a "realistic game" I am having to eat and drink every 30 minutes, otherwise I will die. Just like real life. What a chore. Not only that, but I don't have any weapons, other than a pipe. Or maybe a machete. So off I go killing these zombies, sorry, wanderers, and harvesting their energy just like other, more interesting games. And later on I have to go into these areas that have a sandstorm, sorry dust, which I can't see in. And I need oxygen to survive in them. Otherwise I'll die. Oh, and I also have a stamina meter, which goes down ridiculously quickly. I can run for about 1 minute, as it's realistic. Just like real life. Here's me thinking life was a disappointment, all those childhood hopes and dreams and here I am trudging off to work everyday with a couple of days at the weekend off, getting drunk, just to remind myself that I am still alive. But still, real life is more fun than metal gear survive.

    In MGSV The Phantom Pain I arrived to the mission in a helicopter playing Wagner. I had buddies, the sexy sniper Quiet who could clear a whole base before I arrived. A useful dog. A mech that was ridiculously useful towards the end. Even a horse. I had a suit which allowed me skulls special abilties. I could invade other players' bases online. I roamed the map just for fun, taking out outposts and generally having great fun. I arrive back at motherbase and everyone saluted me, they were all pleased to see me. In short... I felt like a god.

    However, in metal gear survive I don't feel like a god. I feel the opposite, I feel like a homeless person. A bum. Someone scraping to survive. In the phantom pain my minimum loadout, the one I used to keep the loadout cost to a minimum for various missions where I am just grinding, is a luxury compared to what I have to fight with in metal gear survive. In metal gear survive I am literally scrabbling just to survive.

    Video games, like an other pleasurable medium such as films, books, music, etc, should be there to take us away from the mundanity of everyday life. They should be there to fill our hearts with hope, to remind us that sometimes, somewhere, someone great can arrive to turn the tired world on its head an make it a better place. As a famous German philosopher once wrote, they should make us feel like a "superman".

    What can i even say about this game? Not only that it turn out to be the desastrous lunch and a bigger of a disgrace spinoff for the entire franshise but also an insult to the loyal fans from the original metal gear till the Phantom Pain came out back in 2015.     It's a fun take on the survival genre. The game is a little on the short side for me. I had a lot more fun with this than MGSV. It seems to me it's a cool spin-off however it doesn't add much to the saga. The store is an obvious cash grab as the game itself. Sadly Kojima fans will absolutely hate it.

    Video games are art because they allow people to create a digital world based off the creators imagination.     Metal Gear Survive... Is not one of those. The second you see content blocked behind a paywall, privileges such as a second save file, and a SINGLE microtransaction, that should prove that the publisher isn't interested in making the game of their dreams. They have no passion behind their project if they're just looking to make easy money. So why should anyone have to show appreciation for them? If they don't care, why should I?
    Konami, you were one of the ultimate developers back then, but now, you're for a fact THE worst company ever when it comes to gaming. You have employees go through hell to make your games, you kill beloved franchises that made Konami #1, you bite the hands that fed you, and you harassed a former employee, forbidding him to take his award for a game he spent thousands of hours on. You deserve ALL the flack you get from the community and more.

    Alright, the game itself, it's mere existence is a slap in the face to the fan base of a masterpiece of a franchise known as Metal Gear. But even the actually game is nothing special. Forgettable story, bland characters, sluggish and stiff gameplay, bad graphics, dry voice acting. The game is so bad it doesn't even deserve the attention it gets for being so bad. The only reason Konami thought this game would do anything for them was because they hopped they could get some ppl buying the game because the Metal Gear name is on the box. But gamers know better. Shame on you Konami. The world would be better off if you had just went away and stopped trying.
    For the mess that Metal Gear Survive is, it deserves a lower score than a 0/10. Do not buy this game, even on a Steam sale. Not for a short weekend. Not even worth free. Keep this game away from your library.    … Expand

The games first hour is almost all cutscenes with a little bit of gameplay thrown in. The thing about it is, things are happening on the screen but not of its actually interesting. It felt like poorly written fan fiction that was trying so hard to link this game to previous Metal Gear games.

    The gameplay itself is not much fun, I personally don’t really like survival games, to begin with, and this seems like a bad survival game as well. First off, I never want to play a game where I have to regularly be drinking and eating to stay alive. I don’t want that, that’s too tedious and it’s not fun. It’s also a loot based game where you run around and loot everything. I like that kind of mechanic as long its quick but in Survive it takes too long to loot. You walk up to the item, you hold down square (I was playing on my PlayStation 4) for 5 and a half seconds and then you have the item. If you kill 20 enemies in an area and want to loot all of them, it’s going to take 2-3 minutes to do that. It may not sound like that big of a deal until you do that over and over again. Oddly enough, that ended up being my breaking point for this game.

    My simple suggestion is, stay away. I knew this game was getting poor reviews and it was not very popular and that made me curious. Now I know, it’s a bad game and this is one of the worst games I have played the last 3 years.    … Expand

    I had read about this game and I was a bit sad about all the bad reviews. I started up the game with low expectations. I was really surprised when it turned out to be a really addicting game. It is great fun and I can't stop playing. It is like fallout, without the humour and good music.     And then the kicker that everyone's been rightfully outraged about: the endless and unnecessary amount of micro-transactions that limit your saves and inventory. I don't think I need to try and explain why this is not okay.

    If you are one of those people that are considering buying this game or bought it and legitimately enjoyed it, please raise your standards and look elsewhere, you deserve better than the Konami treatment and are better off finding other games, and if you think buying this game will support Metal Gear developers, then I'm sorry to say but that wont happen, I wouldn't be surprised if Konami demoted them by now given how shady their practices have been as of late.

    Left 4 Dead is good if you want an actual zombie game, The Last of Us 2 is coming out fairly soon if you want a brand new survival game, and Monster Hunter World is apparently at a 1,000% better value than this game considering you have more free saves and a 500x bigger inventory.

    I initially bought in to all the hate surrounding this title being a huge MGSV and kojima fan. I did start to hear good things about the game amidst all the criticism and now having played it I can say that it is actually an awesome game. Its pretty sad to see it get so much hate. This review was my sole purpose for joining metacritic.

    The game is mediocre at best (as a stand alone game) but as a Metal Gear game it's really bad, even if it is just a spin off it's still bad, and what pissed me off the most is the inclusion of the scene from MGS V Ground Zero at the beginning...like why?

Not to mention the stupidly awkward gameplay mechanics, pointless objectives, and meaningless story that has almost zero connection to The Phantom Pain along with NONE of the major characters from that game either. They literally just copy-&-pasted the Afghanistan environment from MGSV which is pathetically lazy and cheap. Zombies are becoming such a tired and cliche concept so of course Konami decided to go down this route, forever tainting this landmark game franchise. Anyone who grew up playing MGS should be utterly appalled and disgusted by this shameless attempt for mass-marketing appeal.

    To make matters even worse, you have to pay for extra save slots, the game is filled with micro-transactions, and you have to be online at ALL times to even play the game. This is only adding insult to injury, plus it makes it that much more obvious that they only designed this game to suck as much money out of their consumers as possible. If the game wasn't already bad enough then this was definitely the icing on the cake.

    Metal Gear Solid did not need to become like Call of Duty, but I guess the big wigs at Konami decided they needed to milk this franchise while simultaneously destroying it. What's next, Metal Gear Dance Revolution? How much more embarassing can it get?     Metal Gear Survive - a very well made game that entertains the player to the fullest extent and allows them to reflect on life.

    Everything is original, story mode is very artistic, extremely meaningful content (allowed me to reflect on life and make a change for the better) - very original overall, very good UI/HUD and even better controls than any game ever.

    Best game of the century by far.

    Well well well. I wish Konami did not send Kojima away, I wish they respected his progress and what he has done for the gaming world. I wish they supported him all the way. Metal Gear series is his biggest achievement everyone admired and now here we are playing Metal Gear survive with such heavy feelings. Fox engine used in this game is amazing, killing zombies with variety of ways feels awesome, game mechanics work perfect and feels like you are actually hitting/stabbing the zombie literally. Yes it is repetitive, yes first few hours is really hard to survive, yes it has flaws such as having very few kind of enemies, yes having an extra save slot shouldn't cost that much game points, yes online co-op needs to have more new maps, and the off game screen interfaces(crafting items screen, healing yourself) are not easy to navigate. But in the end I play this game everyday for half an hour or so, sometimes co-op sometimes continuing the story and it still entertains me a lot since I got it a month ago… Expand

    As a fan of Metal Gear series, including spin-offs, I appreciated the plot of this game. I didn't really appreciate the frustrating survival gameplay. But the plot is enjoyable for open-minded Metal Gear fans.

    I can only justify if it is a free-to-play game, because they need to make some kind of money, but where I live this game costs $54 dollars.

    Again, I hate to be one of those guys on here who will blindly hate a game just because they don't like it, but I feel like it is justified in this case. If you have to pay money to get a game, then you have pay more money to get extra save slots, that is enough for a game to get a zero for me.

    Yes, Kojima created Metal Gear Solid, but this is not Metal Gear Solid. There have been plenty of other spin-offs that weren't written by Kojima, or even handled by the same dev team. Basically, people that haven't played the game, are getting all of their information from Youtubers that haven't played the game either. Most of the videos are full of disinformation and are created purely for the views/revenue.

    That being said, the game is a lot of fun to play. As a spin-off of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, it doesn't feel as full as a numbered MGS title. It has roughly the same graphics as MGSV does, and the same, albeit tweaked to allow for defense placement, controls. But for a $40 game, it's pretty damn good. The story feels a little bland until you get to the end and the voice acting is not very good. If you enjoy coop PVE, though, this is right up your alley.

    You'll hear about how it's a "poke a zombie through a fence" simulator, but those people haven't played past the first few missions of the game. Combat gets pretty diverse, and once you reach higher level events/missions, you'll have to plan accordingly. The daily and weekly coop missions include modifiers to the gameplay, a la Destiny heroic strikes.
    The developers are also very receptive to the community and actively work to fix known issues with bugs/balance.
    Basically, a bunch of children are attempting to murder this game, because of the issues between Kojima and Konami, regardless of the fact that they can choose to ignore it if they don't like it and that a lot of people are actively enjoying it. Also, that Kojima derided them for involving "zombies", when he, himself, made a statement about wanting to create a zombie spin-off of Metal Gear (Metal Gear Rising 2, involving Grey Fox and nanomachine zombies). I am a fan of Kojima's and am really looking forward to Death Stranding. I don't know what happened exactly between him and Konami, but that's between them. It's unfortunate what happened, but it's not really our business.

    What gets me, is that the same people **** all over this game are the same ones begging Konami for remakes of the previous titles. What do you think will happen if you actually succeed in Konami discontinuing support for this game? Do you think that the series will go anywhere at all at that point? They're not just going to hand the IP over to Kojima.

    But, I trust you to be a decisive individual that doesn't just base their opinions off of the herd mentality that so plagues our current society. Pick it up, try it. If you hate it, then you can refund it. You've got nothing to lose, and only a potentially good time to gain.    … Expand

Kojima said in an interview that his idea of a metal gear game is political espionage.     Metacritic you really need to look in how reviews are done on here. Out of the 800 reviews only about 100 have actually played the game. The other 700 are from ignorant people who just listen to the hate filled youtubers(people are driven to hate) and regurgitate it without reason. This generation of "SJW gamers" is just sickening.

    4.: For some unexplainable reason, the glorious looking graphics of MGSV's Fox Engine look watered down here. Washed out and lifeless. How? Why? No one knows. Also: They pretty much re-used most of the Afghanistan setting for this. While those were beautiful looking in MGSV, it's just comes across a little lazy in MGSurvive.
    5.: Game needs an online connection to survive. It's pretty much always online. Not a deal breaker for me, but for many others.
    6.: It just feels soul-less. Story wise, art wise. I reckon, that's because this is an uninspired cash grab that tries to milk the expensive existence of the Fox Engine one last time, before Konami calls it quits and goes pachinko all the way.

    I recommend to stay open minded and give this a try of you're a fan of the series. Form your own opinion. There have been people who liked MGSurvive. Keep in mind that most didn't, though, and try to test it somewhere, don't buy it blind. Chances of disappointment and regret are high with this one.    … Expand

In this Metal Gear Survive, the player during the single-player mode will have to explore the map to kill the infected, open containers, hunt animals to feed our avatar's hunger, drink clean or dirty water to quench thirst, activate and use the wormholes to create shortcuts, to make excavations to complete some purpose of the story mode or to obtain some prize, to look for materials to make and to repair certain objects, in fact ... a lot of things to do. This Metal Gear Survive uses the same graphic engine as Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, that is, uses the Fox Engine engine and the gameplay of these titles remains in this Metal Gear Survive, albeit a bit limited by the simple fact of being a survival game. But both are two good points. Too bad that this Metal Gear Survive has copied the scenarios of The Phantom Pain; it was noted that Konami was uninspired in this chapter.

    Unfortunately it isn't the only problem in this game, because Konami shoots the microtransactions in our face in a brazen way. Yes, it is true that microtransactions are simply not new today, without forgetting that unfortunately this game requires to be always online. To create a new profile, we must have 1000 SV (10£) or delete the old profile. Other paid elements also influence the gaming experience, such as survival boxes that last a certain time, be it a day, a week, etc.

    At the equipment level, the arsenal is vast and we have at our disposal several weapons, including Tacos, Axes, Shovels, Hammers, Guns, Bows, Shotguns, Machine Guns, Molotovs, Grenades, Claymores, Mortars, etc. And we also have very important objects like Distraction, Signal Flag for when we are lost in the poisonous fog (in which we have to be attentive to our air tank), Lanterns, healing sprays, Iron or wooden fences, Wooden barricades with or without the barbed wire, among other things.

    There are several types of infected: the normal infected, the Bombers, who easily destroy our defenses and if we kill them without stab them in the back, they will explode like... bombs, we have a type of infected that runs and jumps very fast and we also have infected armed to the teeth that use weapons (weapons that are created in their hands), like machine guns and grenade launchers. They also use shields to reduce damage and are invulnerable when we try to stab them in the back. Of course, we can also face a lot of bosses that are not related to the history missions, and before they try to fight these bosses, it's a good idea to have an excellent arsenal of weapons and equipment, because it will be hell, in a good way.

    When we kill the infected, we can collect an energy called Kuban, which can be used to acquire skill points, which can be used to learn special abilities. But Kuban is not just for this, it also serves to slightly increase our oxygen, but in contrast, the durability of our air tank will go down slightly each time we buy it.

    The cooperative online mode has been reduced to a simple way of defending the tower, which, along with three more players, we have to build barricades to defend the goal, kill the infected and survive three waves of enemies. It's certainly not part of the campaign, but this mode uses the features we collect in the Single-player.

    Unfortunately the story of Metal Gear Survive is something strange and confusing, and the actors who give voice to the characters are nothing more than a simple "ok". The missions are somewhat repetitive; collect databases, save people, defend the excavation towers or the wormholes machines. But not everything is negative in this Metal Gear Survive, the game can even be a survival title due to various elements incorporated into the gameplay, and the cooperative mode can even be fun.

    If you are looking for a game with a strong survival component that keeps you entertained for a while, Metal Gear Survive is for you. However, there are too many flaws in this game, and Konami's greed stained this title and the Metal Gear series as a whole.    … Expand

    All these new added fees are ridiculous. If I buy a game, I expect to be able to use it unreservedly, and without having to spend more to unlock certain parts of it that are hiding behind a pay-wall.

    So for now, no more Konami games for me. At all.

    I'll also be boycotting EA games (ultimate team add-ons tied in to in-game trophies; as well as the Battlefront 2 lootbox debacle) and also Capcom based on Street Fighter 5, which I bought incomplete on release and which tried to sell me the characters that should be in the game.

    I hope I don't have to add Rockstar to the list. But they're walking a very thin line with this whole GTA V online currency situation.

    The point is that if we keep buying, they will keep using these ridiculous stratagems to get our money, instead of working hard to make more games that we could buy. I mean, who could blame them? If we're dumb enough to give them our money, they'd be crazy not to take it!    … Expand

    This may be the worst game I've ever played. Re-used assets from The Phantom Pain half-assed into some kind of zombie survival with terrible mechanics. Do not spend money on this.

    How dare they to make a Metal Gear game in that short amount of time after what they did to Kojima.
    I can believe that on it's core, the game is okay....but it's still an insult towards the industry.

    Not a metal gear game but still manages to be a great game. Mechanics are reused from Metal Gear V but somehow fits the style of game the developers set out to create.

A game that has nothing original to add and is a massive money sink with ridiculous microtransactions and laughably bad ai that is far too easy to exploit; MGS:S isn't just a bad MGS game; it's a terrible game full stop.     Is Metal Gear Survive worth it? Oh yeah, totally. Game of the Year. Honestly, I don’t know why you haven’t bought it yet! Death Stranding won’t be able to compete with this. Sarcasm aside, don’t buy this game, just don’t. Yeah, the environments and visuals are kind of neato and the feeling of helplessness certainly comes across, but it’s just a clusterf**k.

    The whole existence of Metal Gear Survive closely resembles this of the Wanderers – the game’s zombies. With the story, characters and wit ripped out completely off it’s body, what remains is a lifeless yet standing shell of Metal Gear Solid V. The decent (and borrowed) survival mechanics barely keep this husk walking around aimlessly with no purpose whatsoever. Survive may not be a bad survival game, but the merciless grind required and lack of respect for gamers’ time are inexcusable.
