What is Konami doing? What is the point of this game? This game is a sad cash grab attempt at making a quick buck. Konami is already in hot water with the whole the Kojima incident and then they pull this? The sad truth is, this is one of the worst games that I have ever played. Nothing about it is fun, it feels like it was intentionally designed to make you hate yourself. The games first hour is almost all cutscenes with a little bit of gameplay thrown in. The thing about it is, things are happening on the screen but not of its actually interesting. It felt like poorly written fan fiction that was trying so hard to link this game to previous Metal Gear games.

The gameplay itself is not much fun, I personally don’t really like survival games, to begin with, and this seems like a bad survival game as well. First off, I never want to play a game where I have to regularly be drinking and eating to stay alive. I don’t want that, that’s too tedious and it’s not fun. It’s also a loot based game where you run around and loot everything. I like that kind of mechanic as long its quick but in Survive it takes too long to loot. You walk up to the item, you hold down square (I was playing on my PlayStation 4) for 5 and a half seconds and then you have the item. If you kill 20 enemies in an area and want to loot all of them, it’s going to take 2-3 minutes to do that. It may not sound like that big of a deal until you do that over and over again. Oddly enough, that ended up being my breaking point for this game.

My simple suggestion is, stay away. I knew this game was getting poor reviews and it was not very popular and that made me curious. Now I know, it’s a bad game and this is one of the worst games I have played the last 3 years.

What a bummer. As a fan of both MGS and sandbox survival, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of this title. Just picked it up for $10, and it’s not even worth that much. Once you can actually play, the game is interesting for 30 minutes but then reveals itself to be a totally uninspired, repetitive, boring experience. I wasn’t even motivated to get into the base building, and I love that stuff.

Also... for some reason the MGS world involves portals? And the enemies are a cross between zombies and unicorns that wind up being much more weird than scary? If they wanted to do MGS survival, the recipe seems pretty simple: make it like snake eater, a soldier lost in the forest surrounded by tribal enemies or even zombies. But a totally wacko sci-fi hell portal full of dust storms? I just don’t get any of it.

Believe the hate this game is BAD

the game no one asked for has finally released and it's a boring game with elements that we've seen before in better games. It's just not fun to play.

Graphics: with a powerful engine at their disposal you'd think the game would at Least look as good if not better than mgs5...you'd be wrong. The textures are bland and blurry, antialiaisng is a mess, and everything looks glossed over looking very plain and just unappealing to look at. Cutscenes are ok with some good camera angles but they pale in comparison to mgs5. Pretty disappointing graphics and effects.

Story: the story tries to be deep and serious but it just comes off as cheesy and boring. Nothing that happened was interesting and I found myself eantintvto skip the boring scenes with these unappealing characters. Uninteresting story overall.

Gameplay: it works... But it's just so damn boring. Everything you so in this game has been done in better games. Base building, weapon crafting, survival this and hunger elements, have all been seen before over and over again. In this game however they just drag down the experience and don't add anything new or exciting. Killing zombies isn't even that fun because their ai is stupid and they pose little threat. The gameplay works it's just tedious and boring

Sound: some of the voicework is decent but the two ai bot voices are so monotone and slow it almost put me to sleep. Music is ok if forgettable and sound effects are decent. The worst is defintely the ai voicework though.

Lasting appeal: if you like tedious and boring grinding than their is some content here but most people will be too frustrated and bored to even bother with this game

Overall it's just not fun to play. Everything works and their aren't any technical issues but if it's a chore to play then what's the point? That's the games main problem not that it feels like a cheap cash grab on metal gear, not that it has where you have to pay $10 for extra save slots. No, it's the fact that the game is so damn boring and tedious to play.

    3) I do not like to play zombie games.
    4) It does not look like a Metal Gear game at all - it's not like a predecessor. It just shares the same name.
    5) Microtransactions: you need to pay extra to make a new character or to get an extra save file, also you need to pay extra for some other components. Based on this you can conclude why MG Survive was not sold at full price.
    6) Very bad story, does not make any sense at all.
    7) It's repetitive. Each level is the same: defend the tower from the hordes of zombies.

These are my seven reasons why I do not like MG Survive. Reasons have nothing to do with Kojima or Konami. The highest rating I can give to this game is 3 out of 10.

This is the worst spin-off of Metal Gear series. Ghost Babel, Acid, Portable Ops and Rising are much better spin-offs than this game.

It would be better if Konami completed MGS5 by making several more missions for MGS5 and thus shows how Punished "Venom" Snake formed the Outer Heaven, and thus directly connects the story of MGS5 with the original Metal Gear from 1987. And after completing MGS5, then Konami should make a remake of the original Metal Gear 1 and 2. Then make a remake of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the PS4. Would also like to see that Konami make a remake of Ghost Babel with Fox Engine, and to make a Metal Gear Rising 2 to show how Raiden became cyborg.

The game looks and feels good, my only complaint is some of the controls differ from MGS:V and it took a few minutes to get used to. The music is just awful and generic, far from some of the epics fans of the Metal Gear series have come to expect. My friend and I had fun for a little bit learning what items to look for to build things and upgrade, but after about an hour we both started to get bored. There aren't many modes to mix the game up and as far as I can tell the bread and butter of the game is to win matches to get new gear to slightly upgrade your character to take on harder missions. It's a slog to unlock any useful items made even more tedious by the repetitive and uninspired tower defense/survival gameplay. The gameplay feels unpolished and it's missing most if not all the Kojima flair fans of the series have come to expect. After about 4 hours of playing, my friend and I swapped over to Monster Hunter World to take a break and I've honestly only played maybe a total of 2 or 3 hours more of MGS:S since. Maybe wait for this game to go on sale, it definitely feels like it could have been a $15-$20 Phantom Pain dlc. If the game gets any substantial updates that improve the experience I might come back to update my review, but I can see this game being a casual play for most with very few hours of fun to be had. 1.: It's heavy, and I mean HEAVY on the microtransactions. I mean, check this: If you want to create a new player character (like, in addition to your main one), you have to pay 10 real world Dollars to do so.
2.: The gameplay seems clunky. It's just no fun. This is obviously the worst part. It just doesn't gel.
3.: Zombies? I mean, yes, alternate timeline, and yes, this is still an entry in MGS, which did really questionable things itself long before this, but... Zombies. Apart from not fitting thematically at all with stock MGS themes, it's just lazy. Outright lazy and unimaginative. Everything else would have been better than Zombies.
4.: For some unexplainable reason, the glorious looking graphics of MGSV's Fox Engine look watered down here. Washed out and lifeless. How? Why? No one knows. Also: They pretty much re-used most of the Afghanistan setting for this. While those were beautiful looking in MGSV, it's just comes across a little lazy in MGSurvive.
5.: Game needs an online connection to survive. It's pretty much always online. Not a deal breaker for me, but for many others.
6.: It just feels soul-less. Story wise, art wise. I reckon, that's because this is an uninspired cash grab that tries to milk the expensive existence of the Fox Engine one last time, before Konami calls it quits and goes pachinko all the way.

I recommend to stay open minded and give this a try of you're a fan of the series. Form your own opinion. There have been people who liked MGSurvive. Keep in mind that most didn't, though, and try to test it somewhere, don't buy it blind. Chances of disappointment and regret are high with this one.

Congratulations to Konami, for making what looks to be possibly THE worst game in their entire library of titles they ever made. I cannot even fathom what in the WORLD they were thinking when making this thing. I understand, Konami wants a cash cow, but without Kojima, Metal Gear will NEVER be that cash cow for Konami any longer. Konami will now be FORCED to make something of their OWN finally, and see where their OWN imagination takes them, because we now all can see that if Konami is in charge of the Metal Gear series without the magic of Hideo Kojima, it can only end up like this garbage presented with SURVIVE!

With junk like this, I wonder how long Konami will SURVIVE? Not much longer i would assume...

The game is crap, very bland, very boring, very repetitive, and has WAY to many issues with it to be considered anything but a $10 digital title. If they want more from this game, they should include EVERYTHING on the disc with ZERO microtransactions, and charge no more than $19.99 PERIOD!

Metal Gear Survive is not a Metal Gear game. It's a hybrid tower defence/zombie horde game with the Metal Gear name slapped on it by a paranoid Konami, a company hell bent on destroying the Metal Gear series. They are quite successful so far in their endeavor, because Metal Gear Survive is dead on arrival.

At first Metal Gear Survive feels a bit better than what you'd expect. There is a lengthy introductory cut-scene taking place after Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' ending, something which is designed to bait the Metal Gear fans that may be against the game's existence and accept it more easily. You start the game and encounter more zombies chasing you than in the Dead Rising games. Then you slowly start to learn the game's mechanics and complete a few missions. But after a while you realize the game's quite dull actually.

Missions in Metal Gear Survive revolve mostly around the same pattern of setting up defenses and repel the waves of zombies who try to breach your base and destroy its core, while you are scavenging for resources between waves. It's a survival game, yes, but there are just TOO MANY things to care about at the same time. Build fortifications, find allies, procure materials, pick flowers, assemble weapons, find blueprints, manage ammo, hunt animals, and so on. Oh, did I mention the oxygen level, the hydration status, the hunger meter? You have to eat and drink or else your avatar suffers. Also the stamina bar depletes because you are just walking (whereas in Dark Souls and other games you consume stamina only when you sprint, dodge or attack). All these factors together are more of a nuisance than contributors to a better gameplay experience. There is also co-op for up to 4 players but it doesn't make the game any better.

Metal Gear Survive is based on the same technology as the great Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain but somehow manages to look dull. Boring art style and enemies, non existent AI (oh yes, zombies are supposed to be mindless and dumb, but still), laughable boss fights (at least the 2 that I tried before I gave up and returned the game). Everything's been recycled from MGSV (art, map, textures, sound fx, animations, gameplay mechanics, etc.) yet it doesn't make for an equally great game.

Metal Gear Survive's online-only. You can't play this game offline even in single player. It's also full of ridiculous (yet optional) microtransactions, which at least ain't that bad compared to Battlefront 2, there are no loot boxes (at least for now). Pay money to buy virtual coins and exchange them for XP boosters, or you can boost production of water, food, items, etc. Nothing bad, heh? Then how about having to pay $10 for the privilege to get an additional save slot (you only have one by default)!!!!!!1111 That's crazy.

I award this game with 1/10. It should have been an absolute zero, but I respect the work of the Konami developers who were ordered by the company to make a Metal Gear game that is not really a Metal Gear game. They did the best they could with what they had been given, and I don't blame them because they were in danger of losing their jobs if they didn't comply. The only people at fault here are the Konami higher-ups, because they decided to release an awful, low-budget mod for MGSV as a new game priced at $40.

Metal Gear fans should steer clear from Metal Gear Survive. Those looking for a survival/co-op game should also avoid this or at least try it before buying it.

I gave this game a fair shake at 6-8 hours of playing..

If the game wasn't trying to be hailed as a part of the Metal Gear franchise, it wouldn't be terrible. But everyone's said that. So I'd like to go over some of the things in the game I haven't seen in other reviews that make it rather horrible.

THE GOOD: Same player mechanics that you had in MGSV, so it feels good to shoot, the controls are responsive. The game correctly punishes you for using loud weapons by having any nearby hordes rush to investigate the source of sound. So that's... encouraging stealthy play I suppose.

    THE NOT GOOD:

FOOD/WATER MECHANICS / Okay, survival, fair enough. Food and drink makes sense. How it's executed however is clumsy at best. You manage food, water, and at points oxygen throughout the game. The bars drop at an excessive pace, meaning that you spend way too much time in the not intuitive inventory system fumbling through food. Which, by the way, has the most OBNOXIOUS eating sound I've heard in a video game. Every 5-10 minutes you get the joy of listening to someone chewing and groaning into a mic.
ALSO, if you allow your food/drink to reach below 20%, your screen starts going fuzzy and out of focus at regular intervals. It's extremely pervasive and disrupting to watch. Literally gave me a headache. You'd think that the skill trees would have something to slow down hunger and thirst buildup, but I've yet to see it. Meaning you can't increase the amount of time between eating/drinking.

OXYGEN / A big part of the game is played in an environment the player cannot breathe in, meaning you need an oxygen tank. A small, not upgradeable, short-life span, BREAKABLE air tank.

VOICE ACTING / All the VA for the characters is mediocre, which isn't the end of the world. BUT the MOST ACTIVE voice you hear is that of your friendly AI. This wouldn't be so bad if they didn't choose the MOST ANNOYING voice for it I've heard in my long years. Imagine a 13 year old in the 80's imitating what he thinks a robot sounds like. The halting, awkward speech patterns, and inflection on all the wrong parts in a sentence. Every time you take up a new mission you have to sit through this dumbass voice.

GAME LORE PACING / The lore is not given at good intervals to properly look through and listen to it. In the first camp you investigate you get a 4:45 minute long audio recording from a previous researcher. The trek back to home base takes 30 seconds. This means that you're still listening to the voice recording long after finishing the mission and returning to your base, this bad foresight is compounded by that the dumbass AI voice will just chime in randomly as well, giving you TWO bored voice actors to listen to at once. Yay.

CO-OP / The coop mode is what I bought this game for, and it isn't worth it. I was expecting a game that could be played fully co-op, up to and including exploring the wastes of the world with my friends. Not the case. You are teleported to a very limited horde mode style map, which is ripped out of the single player world to boot. If you want to buy this for coop, just don't buy it.

Enemy AI / Zombies are dumb, fair enough. But the arbitrary stupidity in pathing is crazy. Any player made object you throw up, instead of pathing around it, the enemy AI will simply attack the object. In a bind? Throw up a 4 foot section of chicken wire fence and the zombies will not be able to get around it. Regardless of where you put the fence. It doesn't have to be a choke point. I put a fence down in the middle of the desert, and the AI wouldn't go around it instead preferring to attack the fence to destruction.

Let me get this out of the way, i haven't played the game, i'm just gonna leave this review to try to explain why is this so hated ( to those who don't know why at least).

This game at least from what i've seen, look good, it has some interesting things, but the problem comes when they try to name it "metal gear", i'm a metal gear fan like 500% but when this was announced it felt like an insult to Hideo Kojima and to the metal gear fanbase, it was almost like if they wanted to kill the franchise in the most humiliating way, like a really bad joke, it doesn't have anything to do with metal gear ( story - wise), the way they made this just felt extremely forced and stupid, and also, what does the metal gear franchise deal wtih?... war, nukes, robots, stealth, amazing characters, etc... what does metal gear survive deals with ?... zombies.... it is not even fair to call this a metal gear game...
if they made a game that didn't have anything to do with metal gear and it's universe, it would probably be a 7 or an 8, probably even a 9 if they made it really awesome, but no, it feels like either they were too pretentious to think they could just do whatever they wanted, or like if they wanted to ruin kojima's legacy or just kill the franchise while making money out of it....

with that said, i don't know if the game is bad or not, maybe it is, maybe it isn't, so i'll just leave a neutral score, as i said before, i just wanted to explain the context behind all the hate...
i think you should give it the benefit of the doubt ( if it isn't too insulting for you xD )
maybe try to picture it like something not cannon or maybe imagine is an alternate timeline or something, i think that if you actually get past that, it could be enjoyable or fun at least...

edit: f**k everything i just said, they are ven using excesive microtransactions, that's too low, screw them...

A disgraceful rip off of a once great franchise. If Konami doesn't care about making games anymore because they believe that there is better profit in slot machine business, let this garbage be the first step of their exit of the gaming industry.

Is Metal Gear Survive worth it? Oh yeah, totally. Game of the Year. Honestly, I don’t know why you haven’t bought it yet! Death Stranding won’t be able to compete with this. Sarcasm aside, don’t buy this game, just don’t. Yeah, the environments and visuals are kind of neato and the feeling of helplessness certainly comes across, but it’s just a clusterf**k.

Somewhat cynical and clearly a little low budget, it isn't always easy to pull for Survive. Thankfully, some of the best wave combat on PS4 saves the day. [Apr 2018, p.91]

The whole existence of Metal Gear Survive closely resembles this of the Wanderers – the game’s zombies. With the story, characters and wit ripped out completely off it’s body, what remains is a lifeless yet standing shell of Metal Gear Solid V. The decent (and borrowed) survival mechanics barely keep this husk walking around aimlessly with no purpose whatsoever. Survive may not be a bad survival game, but the merciless grind required and lack of respect for gamers’ time are inexcusable.
