Weird controls which you have to learn all by yourself, the tutorials are next to non-existent. And the story, it's my first MGS game and they try to bring me up to speed with scrolling texts, can you believe it?
Edit: turns out, you really shouldn't play this before MGS V: Phantom Pain. All the tutorials that are missing are all introduced in PP. Don't get Ground Zeroes, it's nonsensical

I don't understand why the developers nudge you into playing GZ before PP by saying GZ is the prologue to PP. GZ is just a half-baked unpolished piece of sht.

A vision of the future of what awaits us with The Phantom Pain, the Deja Vu mission is exceptional for a fan of the serie. I don't like judging games by their price but this is a $30 intro, that's too much. The promise made with the story (with the help of the trailers) made me hope for a story without concession for The Phantom Pain.

Sadly this game was not really worth what they were selling it at. Even though this is true I really adore games that take less than 12 hours to finish that I can play over and over again. I had a lot of fun with what little it has.

For me while it is not wrong is a lame excuse for lack of content. It was created as prologue to Meal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain. It is the typical good stealth action game that you expect from a Metal Gear Solid title. The presentation is excellent and graphics and sound are also really good. It must make a warning however there is some content here that is unsavory and can make you feel ill. It would not be added if this was made today. Overall an excellent demo but not worth this much money. Play The Phantom Pain instead. I give 5/10 because of the lack of content and would have given 9-10/10 if it had a satisfying amount of it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hearing Sutherlands voice coming out of Snake's mouth is infuriating. While there is an excuse for this in Phantom Pain, it doesn't fly here. Kojima used the same Japanese voice actor consistently. Perhaps this a cultural difference, but he didn't understand how english speaking audiences associate the character with the voice actor. Additionally Snake doesn't behave like Big Boss, but rather a selfish Sutherland who's creative input is to 'seem cool' not by acting cool, but by making other characters idiotic. The idea that anyone would follow this man is ludicrous.

If you don't care about any of that - MGS has the best stealth gameplay of all time, hands down, & this is an excellent demo for The Phantom Pain.

I literally do not understand why this game is getting so many positive reviews on Metacritic. This game is utterly pathetic.

I would give this game the normal review that I usually do, but I don't think there's enough content to make a proper judgement. I'm lucky I got this game for free as a monthly PS-Plus game, because I would be feeling very ripped off if I purchased this game

The objectives simply to PUSH the story forward. So in the name of being allowed to skip filler content and go straight to the story.

I'm aware that some people have done speed runs of it in less than 10 minutes but then again, I've seen 100 hour games such as Skyrim beaten in 1 hour! There are multiple side ops and cassette tapes, character info for you to be informed of characters and there are multiple difficulties for you to be playing for months on end if you were dedicated enough. However i will not defend this game in any way as it claimed me as well as millions of other loyal Kojima die-hard fans as part of the insensitive and opportunistic Konami capitalist hierarchy as nothing more but an expendable customer to be given the middle finger. It is not worth a full analyses as it is not a game. There are certainly good aspects of this "thing" such as its stealth and mature themes and story but to be honest, these aspects are expanded upon and perfected in the sequel which takes hours upon hours to complete for anyone.

This game is not worth your money in any aspect (even for renting it) as you might as well watch a playthorugh of it or even better, buy the sequel if you want.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ground Zeroes is a prelude to the full MGS V The Phantom Pain, and is a nice surprise. It's a "little" AAA game focused on gameplay and with built-in replayability. It has both positives and negatives, which I'll discuss right away.

GZ is a sequel to MGS Peace Walker, and Big Boss has to rescue Chico and Paz from a US black site in Cuba. There is not much story-wise (Big Boss rescues Chico and Paz only to return to Mother Base and see it destroyed by the mysterious XOF and falls into coma after his helicopter was shot down) but it's interesting nonetheless as it sets the events of The Phantom Pain in motion. That scene in the helicopter (where Paz was operated) got into my stomach. Also, the cassette tapes flesh out the story, covering events prior to the mission. The only downside is that the main mission lasts about an hour, and can be completed in 5 minutes or so if you know what to do, skip the cut-scenes, and exploit some AI weaknesses.

The gameplay has been revamped from previous games and it's full open world and you can play as you see fit. The game is set in a single map where US troops patrol and you have to sneak past them, as per the series' tradition. It's easy to be seen by enemies if you run around carelessly, and from different positions too, so the slow motion reflex mode is a godsend as it gives you a chance to take out an enemy before he raises the alarm. Most useful is the tagging mechanic, as the base can have dozens of enemy patrols and you have to keep track of them. If you are spotted and pursued, enemies will hunt you down and try to surround you, and they are really good at shooting you down. If you evade them, they will search the base for quite a time. The one AI complaint I have is that, if you hold up an enemy and tell him to drop down to the floor, he will remain there indefinitely or until an alarm sounds. That is a leftover from Peace Walker and shouldn't be present. There are a few weapons to choose from, but nothing beats the silenced tranquilizer pistol. You can't carry more than 4 weapons at a time, gone is the ability to carry tons of different weapons around. A nice addition is the ability to drive vehicles, but it's strange that classic gameplay beats (cardboard box, knock on wall, etc.) are missing. The CQC mechanic is present and more refined than ever. The missions (1 main mission and 6 side ops) are varied enough and can be completed in normal and hard difficulty. There is even a side op which will bring nostalgia to MGS fans, as it is somewhat set in Metal Gear Solid's Shadow Moses Island. There are also collectables (XOF patches and cassette tapes) to pick up. Finally, if the player completes all missions, he can upload his save file to benefit in The Phantom Pain (you get some extra soldiers for Mother Base, like Hideo Kojima himself!).

Going into the technicalities, the game is powered by the Fox Engine, which delivers beautiful graphics, although the side missions set in day time look rather bland compared to the night based main mission, which looks really nice. The game runs at a perfect 60 fps on console which makes the game feel much smoother than in the past where performance was bad. No dropped frames, no screen tearing, no nothing. On the sonic side of things, the actors perform well enough in this short game. Kiefer Sutherland voices Big Boss in a Spartan way (meaning he doesn't speak much at all), but is really good. Miller, Huey, Skull Face, Paz and Chico sound convincing but have little dialogue to truly establish their characters. Sound effects are nice, though.

Overall, Ground Zeroes is a nice game. When it originally came out it cost $30 and caused controversy, regarding it's value as "a $30 demo" (comparing it to the mythical "free" MGS 2 demo from 2000, but that really wasn't free because you also had to buy the Zone of the Enders game, but whatever). Nowadays it costs much less, but even at $30 it was worth every penny. There are many full priced $60-70 games which don't come close to feature all the goodies GZ has to offer to the gamer. Buy the game and enjoy it.

First things first, some people complain it is a really short game and that it is not worth the money. The good thing about this one, basically is that for me it feels like an old MGS with improved gameplay. The mechanics are quite clever and I think it is really fun to play. And this game is story driven, what do I mean by this?, well MGS have always been games where you spent a lot of time looking at cut-scenes or listening to conversations over the codec/radio etc. This one feels like that, and I don’t think it has lost that essence. I am commenting this, because at the moment I am half way through MGSV and I must say that one has lost that story-driven game essence MGS used to have, and in my opinion is a shame. Well, you won’t find that in this one.

I liked this prologue game a lot more than MGSV; it is well worth some money if you find it cheap.

Getting spotted and run and hide for a few minutes. Then same thing all over, every mission. Thank goodness this is a short game, cos imagine doing this in Phantom Pain all the way through... It's gets so repetitive and how long you want to be sneaking around anyway? It's not fun after 1 hour. So thanks for showing me the gameplay that is to be in Phantom Pain. Cos now I know I won't buy it and won't have to waste time on it cos I won't enjoy it. Many people would. Not me though.

Another problem I have with the game is the main character. Guys, it's 2015 well, 2016 now why can't we create our character?? I don't want to play this random old man with an eye patch. Same thing with the Witcher, who happen to be even older than Venom Snake. Omg what's with the popularity of old men these days?? lol.

It's not a terrible game as I said, the game mechanic is quite solid. Just repetitive (like my review). But playing GZ once, I don't know if I want anymore of Metal Gear.. Alright then. Signing out.

But we haven't had a proper Metal Gear Solid game in a long time, so why not make it a standalone 40$ package sold in stores. The meat of Ground Zeroes is the main mission, where Big Boss rescues the two POW's , Chico and Paz... that's really all the story material that Ground Zeroes offers. To be fair, it take a while on your first play through, you're killing guards, sneaking past searchlights and all that good stuff, so it will take you a good hour on your first play through, but if you really wanted you could beat this demo in 5 minutes. However, if you're a long-time Metal Gear Solid fan, then you have paid more than 30$ for less of a demo. you all remember Zone Of The Enders, we all know you only bought it for the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo, you're not fooling anyone. The graphics in Ground Zeroes are absolutely amazing, filling every little nook and cranny with as much detail as possible, the Fox Engine is absolutely incredible. The gameplay is even better, aim and fire weapons with the left and right triggers, use the D-Pad to select items and RB to use your binoculars that allow you to mark enemies. everything runs at a buttery smooth 60 FPS. there is a new reflex mode that, if you get spotted, throws the game into slow motion, giving you a couple of seconds to take out the guy who spotted you. I personally don't think you should buy this game, just go on Wikipedia if you want to know the story, and if you're totally desperate to play it, rent the game, or split the money with you're friend, then use it as a drink coaster while you play the full fledged Phantom Pain. Back then you would get a monthly demo disc of all the latest and greatest games for the price of the magazine (I think was like $7.99 or something). It was a great basically free DEMO. It's unfortunate that the game industry has led us into greed the way it has charging a demo for $20+. It would have been nice if konomi had released it on PSN for free the way Destiny did. This game is a demo as you can see and as such should be bought at Gamestop and then within seven days returned after you beat the 1 hour or so game time for full refund. That's really the best you can do. It is a good way to get used to the controls and gameplay used in Phantom Pain but beyond that it's a scam. With that being said, the story is hard to follow and kinda half assed compared to the original (and Sons of Liberty demo) which really just played the beginning of the full game. It's a very bad game. I never would have bought it with my money. Terrible gameplay, strange shooting, unremarkable graphics. Whether the story even longer, she would not have been better.

After the masterpiece MGS4 (which is my favorite game of all time) I thought that there would be no new MGS games (mainstream anyway.) So when i heard of a new game, including the prelude game, ground zeroes, i did a double back flip.

Now, one thing that i must get out of the way, that every reviewer is going to bring up, the length. Yes the game is short. Yes, i beat the main mission in a matter of an hour. That doesn't mean i didn't enjoy it. I actually very much enjoyed it. It offers much more refined gameplay than any metal gear solid game that i have ever played, which i hope MGS5: the phantom pain can improve upon even more.

The game is also highly replayable in my opinion. No, not for the collectibles, but for the immense amount of choice there is. You can choose what route you wish to take to infiltrate the base. You can sneak in, you can go in guns blazing, you can snipe from a vantage point, you can recon, there is just so much variability here.

There are also some side missions, called "side ops" here. They offer some great variation and extra content. On the downside, they use the same tired map from the main mission. It would have been nice to see some other locations. Another thing i must bring up is the price. The full retail price is 40 dollars, but i bought it a few days after launch for 30 dollars, paired with a PS plus discount.

Ground zeroes is a taste of what is to come in phantom pain. I just wish they would have had this as the prologue of phantom pain instead of selling it as almost full retail. Would i recommend it? mmm, only if you can get it a discounted price, or if it's free on PS plus. 7/10

This game is freaking fantastic! It's an awesome demo of what the phantom pain is going to be. But that is all it is a demo. The main issue with the game is the asking price. The game plus all the side ops is around 5 hours long which is in excusable for $40. However considering that the game these days has been dropped to $10 on average I will not give it a hard time. The gameplay is really good although quite different from your average MGS game. If the phantom pain is like this it will be one of the best games for the 8th generation. Overall I think its a pretty good game but don't buy it at full price and if your not ok with paying money for a flat out tech demo just rent it since there is very little story and content here. Despite the the common theme that this game is just a "demo", I thoroughly enjoyed playing MGS Ground Zeroes. The missions are intense and engaging and are highly replayable. Hugely replayable with stellar graphics and gameplay. Despite this, it really does feel like a glorified demo for The Phantom Pain. As good a demo as it is.

I can't understand how this demo-game can be sold, it should be free (it actually is during this month on PS+...)
There's only 1 mission, which doesn't take more than 2 hours to complete for someone who never played MGS. There also are secondary missions but they are not interesting.
However, it's a pleasure to play this, and after completing the mission, you'll want to know what happens

I've ever been a massive fan of the MetalGear series. I don't like the overly long cut scenes and ridiculously bad plot and characters, but I thought I'd give this a go. Luckily I didn't pay for it as it was free on PS+ this month. Playing made me wonder why this demo wasn't free to start with.

As a kid you would get demo discs on the front of magazines with one level from a game/s on the disk so you get an idea of what the game was like. I really miss those days as it was so fun going through 20 demos in a night finding out first hand which games were worth buying in full. Now we are insulted by having to pay for a single level just to get taster of the game.

Like I said, luckily I dint pay for it. The graphics, although very nice (technically) don't do anything for me because the setting, characters and scenery are so dull. Seen it all before. Military base, buildings, concrete, jeep, barrels, yawn. There's nothing new or mildly interesting to make the graphics stand out.

Gameplay is very weak, like a poor mans version of the now very outdated Splinter Cell. Controls are bad, weapons have less damage than pellet guns and enemy AI is either extremely stupid or knows exactly where you are? It makes no sense. Snake's movements are clunky and fiddly reminding me of the early Resident Evil games.

Snake as a character is laughable. Based on Kurt Russell in Escape from New York means I cant ever take him seriously as the film was so bad. The story is non existent and the map is small with little to actually do.

I cant recommend this game to anyone apart from Metal Gear fanboys who clearly get something I don't.

This is demo and only make sense when free and if you're fun of the series. DO NOT pay a penny for it, as it worth nothing. I would really ask Sony publisher what they were thinking when releasing this kind of tech previews as a full game to be sold even at half price of real games.

    Another PS+ review really.

I'm outright not a fan of the MGS series. I found the PS2 / PS3 games far to intricate for my liking, mainly as it's so heavily stealth based. The graphics were excellent, the cut scenes and gameplay fluently roll between and unlike previous games, it doesn't make you sit through huge chunks of cut scenes, another pet hate from the older ones.

It's a really good little game and as a MGS hater, I find I can't flaw Ground Zeroes for any reason.

Recommend a download and play to all PS+ members, and even if its reduced in sale to £10 in the future, pick it up as a prequal to what should be a great title

There might be an interesting game in this engine, but it’s not here, not yet, and as a result Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is at best a very expensive demo that should only be approached with the lowest expectations.
