Game is overall good. The graphics are a little bit updated but that is obviously because it is on newer consoles. Game does not feel delayed in any movement. It also does not feel clunky which is good.

Must have for any of my Gangstas out there! A bit unstable, dropping down to 25fps sometimes though unfortunately. Hopefully there will be a free PS5 patch to make it all look and play even better. 7/10

With the Mafia Trilogy been released with a much anticipating remake of the original one, it is time to relive the now remastered version of second entry in the Mafia franchise: Mafia II.

I played the original Mafia II on the PS3, and I remembered it been a great detailed world with a fantastic emotional story. So I was quite excited to relive this, with now included DLC’s that I never got to play in the original.

In this review I will mainly focus on the remastered part and only sum up what I think in general of the game. Because this is “only” a remaster and nothing fundamentally has changed besides the graphics.

To sum up what I think about Mafia II: The story is still great emotional with an ending, that still is a surprising cliffhanger. Vito Scaletta is still an enjoying character to control and his best friend Joe Barbaro is still quite charismatic. But the story is a little bit short, maybe because the missions are tons of fun, and you just want more of it.

Gameplay are the same, which of course are quite old now. Some combat encounters are still fun, but I think the cover system is outdated, where sometimes you are stocked with enemies surrounding you, where you can do nothing but stay and get shot.

The Vehicles in the game must I say, is quite a highlight. I didn’t remember how realistic it was, where you can feel the clutch in cars when you begin to drive. Also with traffic rules enforced it really is one of the few games where follow the rules is enjoyable.

And all the small details like open the hood in cars, turning of lights in apartments and the need to fill up your car with fuel, all these small details makes it a fun gameplay experience.

Now with the remaster, the game looks beautiful, which I think it did in the original, but now small details like wet cobblestones when it rains, and the shining on the cars when the sun is shining, the game is looking great. Again the vehicles are just the highlight for me. Cutscenes also look pretty with the focus on small details.

But the remaster also bring bugs not seen before in the game. Sometimes the game lags while playing the game, and I have experienced the game crashed multiple times. Sometimes in cutscenes the characters acts strangely, example a cutscene with Leo, his eyes were on one side of his head, with his head looking the opposite way. So the remaster is not without its problems unfortunately which also affects my score.

The remaster also includes all the available DLC’s. I haven’t played them before until this remaster. Of course there wasn’t much extra story except 3-4 missions in the DLC about Joe. So nothing “new” about these, but with the lack of free mode, these are quite a welcome, if you just want to cruise around and enjoy the beautiful city and the different vehicles. But I experienced the most bugs in the DLC’s. Certain places in the map, some textures disappears and a lot of lags.

Mafia II is a game I still enjoy. All the small details in the game are what I like about it, so I am glad that this got remastered so I can play it again. But the bugs in the remastered part, sometimes ruins this great game. It is quite unfortunately because the game itself is still enjoyable.

Okay, they had a lot more time now and still haven't been able to deliver something that could be considered good. I mean, the original game is good, but that version should be better, talking about game play and graphics. This version it's still buggy and bad optimited

Mafia 2 is a good game but nothing special. Overall I liked the story of part 1 better, part 2 did feel too similar and was not very original. The definitive edition sadly has lots of graphic bugs. Really sad that they are not fixing the warning Leo quest, the end of the quest when you reach his house is completely broken. It took me a dozen attempts and some game-restarts to make it work.Mafia 2 is a good game but nothing special. So what to say about this game? let's go point by point. The story is incredible, i loved the story so much, it definitely feels like a mafia tv show. The story is incredible, i loved the story so much, it definitely feels like a mafia tv show. Although it does start somewhat slow it picks up rather quickly, its very entertaining and immersive, buuuut by the final 4 chapters it feel rushed to no limits, it feels like they were going to make a 20 chapter game but they had deadline so they simply pushed it down to 15, i mean it all happens waaaay too fast in the final 4 chapters to the point were its like the Fast & Furious series, all action and no story, which is a shame becuse it was doing so well. The ending isnt the best either, and leaves many questions un-answered, overall i give the story a 1.5/2. Moving on to characters, another thing i loved and enjoyed a lot, but there are some characters that simply suck and werent given attention too, for example the chinese mob leader, he doesnt even speak in the whole game, Vito's sister? she is just a whiny **** with no purpose and interacts only like 2 times with him in the whole story. There is even a guy you kill at the first levels with Harry and Joe, but you enver learn why, you just do it because. My problem really is with this secondary characters that you meet once and never speak to again because it really inst necessary, but the main characters are awesome, Vito, Joe, Harry, Leo, definitely great performances from them, overall, again a 1.5/2. Setting, the setting is, well not the best, even though it is the 50's, it doesnt really feel like it, most of the time it feels like nothing changed from the first 40% of the game that is set in the 40's, it feels lifeless, and with the map being so small i dont think its really relevant, to me its a 1/2. Gameplay is not great either, for some reason the game gets increasingly harder and harder as you progress, not because of the number of enemies, or that they might have better guns than you, or better AI, but while your guns take 5-6 shots to kill, their guns take 2-4, and that made no sense to me, their damge increased as the game progressed and it just felt stupid, there is also not a great variety of guns, you have 4 SMG's, 3 pistols, 1 shotgun and 1 rifle, and thats it, there isnt anything else, which makes the game have little to no strategy than learning the patterns, picking 1 or 2 up close with the OP shotgun, and the rest with the Thompson, its very dissapointing and driving isnt great either, it feels like GTA waaaay too much, so 1/2. Finally, the graphics, even though this is a 10 year old game, i havent seen such a disgraceful optimization for a remastered in PS4, its terrible, graphics are very meh, not much improvement, but the game constantly bugs and glitches, at the start i thought it was the fast cars, but then it began to happen very oftenly with just walking, huge let down for anyone who played the original and even new players like myself. I would aslo like to point out that there are some cutscenes that crash the game and you are forced to skip them, there are also some that clearly werent well made, as the eyes will start looking at any random direction even if the character is in front of you, however i do have to give them props becasue it apparently was even worse at the start, so 1/2. In short Mafia II is a fun game to grind for 30 bucks, but i wouldnt recommend playing it, its in this category of games that you play out of your own curiosity, so if you want a great story play mafia II, but dont expect the rest of the game to be any good.

I played this on PS5 and you know what? For a low enough price it ain't bad. Everything seems to be up to date visually, and the game mechanics are as good as I remember them. The only thing that takes this game down is 2 game ending bugs I had to work around. These still exist in 2021, which is unacceptable.

So, if it's a low enough price I'd recommend buying it. Just beware of the bugs.

Very good game with an excellent story and pacing. Pretty much your run-of-the-mill story but handled and executed very well mainly due to the well written characters and well casted voice actors. Visually looks very good also.

DLC is an absolute cheap cash grab. Gameplay is emphasised with a score attack mechanic, for what reason is unknown. Also that drive 1000 Miles trophy/achievement is an absolute joke for a DLC mode that lasts two hours tops and only clocks up to 50 Miles. Such a jarring decision to include it to not modify its requirements.

Game lags every now and then I think you should have remake it to keep it as a masterpiece

Offering many memorable moments and a well-realised if empty world, this remaster is dragged down by some technical flaws . The Definitive Edition? Not quite. [Issue#177, p.147]

Unfortunately, this version of Mafia II feels like a barely-touched-up version of a last-gen game that constantly tested my patience and despite my love for the script, I can’t recommend that anyone play through hours and hours of a mediocre, buggy mess just to see the cutscenes. In its current state, Mafia II: Definitive Edition is not worth a player’s time or money — without any further improvements or substantial patches, this one needs to sleep with the fishes.

The remaster of Mafia II remains a great opportunity totally missed by the publisher to turn the bad memories, softened anyway by nostalgia, into a new worthwhile adventure. Instead, we received a console port put together haphazardly and without any care or consideration. The Definitive Edition of Mafia II dooms the game to go down in history as an experience that went from bad to worse.
