Eight months after hope for humanity was destroyed...

Nini, the protagonist who lost his home and family to the ancient calamity known as the "Kegai," arrives at the peaceful countryside town of Ashiharanakatsu to stay with his mother's relatives.

In this town where everyday life and the extraordinary intertwine, Nini's radiant and stressful summer begins.

LOOP8 is a juvenile RPG in which you live your "everyday life" and fight "the extraordinary." Live a summer all your own while forging relationships with the people around you, while fighting calamities known as "Kegai."

The game's unique emotional artificial intelligence, the "Maturity System," controls all aspects of the game's progress, and the character's emotions and stories are constantly shifting. Each "choice" you make influences the game's world, offering a different experience every time you play.

Loop8: Summer of Gods offers an intriguing premise with a wide cast of characters and strong social component but lacks to offer more variety in its gameplay, which results in a constant feeling of repetition.

Loop8: Summer of Gods is a gorgeous and ambitious JRPG that introduces unique elements to the genre but doesn’t know how to properly mix them to deliver a cohesive and memorable experience. The narrative gets insanely good, but I wish it didn’t take several loops to figure that out. Sadly, the limited quality-of-life features, strange battle system, and lack of character attachment make the entire experience more effort than it’s worth. However, if you look past that, you may find enjoyment in this one-of-a-kind JRPG that took some commendable chances on the genre.

A good time loop mechanic is supposed to give you enough variety so that repetition doesn't set in. Unfortunately, this is where Loop8 falls flat. You’ll be going over the same conversations and they’re just not interesting enough to make it worthwhile. It also doesn’t help that there’s only a small variety of enemies, and that the underworld is mostly just the town with a different colour palette. It's hard not to get annoyed when you realise that you’re still not strong enough to take out the next boss, and have no choice but to repeat the last few weeks.

With its interesting premise that blends time-looping mechanics and extensive relationship-building into Persona's familiar formula, I went into Loop8: Summer of Gods expecting a summer to remember. It's just a shame that none of these elements come together as cohesively as they could have, making for an uneven experience. With repetitive dialogue choices that feel mostly weightless, a quirky combat system, dungeon-crawling that comes across as mostly tacked-on, and a severe lack of variety, don't go canceling your summer plans for this one.

The beauty of the Japanese countryside and its folklore fails to save Loop8, a game that remains imprisoned in its own vicious circle. It feels like a JRPG with dating sim and roguelike elements, but lacks souls and personality, becoming yet another forgettable Persona clone on the market. And that's a real shame, because it looked really promising.

Loop8 isn’t able to present a coherent whole – underwhelming writing, overly simple mechanics, and an annoying loop mechanic simply don’t mix. [Issue#29, p.94]

Pretty much everything in Loop8 boils down to building up your stats past an arbitrary barrier by looping and repeating the same dull, boring conversations and tasks ad nauseum. The characters are tropey and uninteresting, the unique premise is squandered by disjointed storytelling, and the combat is devoid of strategy or depth. The only positive thing I can commend the game for is the visuals, which feature a nice mix of detailed 3D models and lovingly crafted 2D background elements. They really nailed the look of an 80’s Japanese island town, but the actual game is such a chore to play that I can’t recommend it to anyone. Spend your summer somewhere other than Ashihara.

If you don't know English to make the choices, stay away, as there are much more conversations than actual combat moments. Despite this, the game is interesting and shows us a facet of the Japanese people that we are not used to seeing around here. The game has several different endings, and the loop idea is interesting, but the development team could have balanced the combat issue a little, which is almost non-existent here. Expand
