The cartoon-style graphics and characters are charming, the fast-paced action and fluid combat exciting, and the ability to customize your weapons to such an extent is fantastic and sets it apart from other shooters.

On one side, the free to play mechanics ultimately get into the inevitable grinding, which could bother some. On the other hand, gameplay can be loads of fun, and the irony is sincere.

Loadout isn’t some new breed of free-to-play, but it does a very entertaining job of balancing what you can play with when you can pay. Being a low level isn’t painfully boring, and gaining experience or good weapons doesn’t require real money.

Loadout on PlayStation 4 is not without its issues, but overall it remains an energetic, madcap shooter with a violent sense of humor that delights as often as it disgusts.

I had some fun free-to-play battles with Loadout, but far more time was spent mired in frustration or feeling under-fulfilled with a purchased campaign victory; it's not quite "pay to win," but it definitely is "pay to win with a lot less hassle."

Loadout isn’t a bad game; there just isn’t much to it. If you’re worried about how a PC game translates to the PS4 controller, you’ll be happy to hear there are minimal issues. The control isn’t perfect, though, and despite the better part distribution system, there isn’t much to talk about aside from weapon crafting.

New shooters need to be special to stand out in an arena of bigger brands, and Loadout doesn't quite have the quality required to back up its ideas.

I love to waste time with video games, but Loadout seems to point the gun in the wrong direction and then fire dud rounds at all the wrong ideas. The package offers plenty of gameplay and you could certainly get a kick out of using Vita remote play to while away commercials on TV, but you probably have other games to play too.

The weapon-crafting is great but given the manipulative microtransactions this free-to-play shooter is not worth your time, let alone your money.

The UI, first off, is absolutely abysmal. To go back to the top menu, the current menu must be closed by using the circle button, and then to navigate THAT menu it's only for the left and right d-pads. Additionally, the pause menu is equally as trash; to change an option, lets say sensitivity, pressing X will send the cursor to the bottom-most option and it forces you to go up to change your desired settings.

Controls feel very clunky. The game feels as if the control stick sensitivity option doesn't affect the movement very much. The PC version is better, having played it a while back.

The free-to-play model forces the developers to implement microtransactions in order to keep the game alive. They say this game is not pay-to-win, as Spacebux is optional and its used to buy cosmetics. Unless it's a bug, could you please explain why there are Spacebux prices on the Weaponcrafting menus?

Also, why is everything in the game so weak? The beginner rifle, at max, does at least 6 damage per shot. The word 'weak' doesn't do it justice in this case. The enemy bots that players go up against with seems to have much better weaponry, despite being at almost the same level.

Loadout is an okay game despite it flaws. Hey, at least it's playable right?

It's currently free on PS4 (although there are in game purchases that can boost your character) so if you like this type of thing it might be worth a go but I can't imagine many people sticking with it all that long. If you've played and enjoyed a Team Fortress title, you'll feel right at home here. The only difference is if you really want to maintain a competitive edge, you'll have to pay for it. Think Warframe "freemium" style and you'll have a good idea of what to expect. It's not terrible, but misses some of the nuance its big brother has. This is mostly a gib-fest, probably meant for young teens that focus less on solid mechanics and more on how many chunks they make when they shoot you with a rocket launcher. For all that, it isn't terrible, some of the animations are funny as hell and using the taunts to accelerate captures provides some classic group taunting moments. That's about it though, honestly. If you're a die hard shooter fan you may find yourself right at home. If you're looking for the finesse of a high-class shooter however, look elsewhere. Taper your expectations for Loadout and you may be pleasantly surprised...I wasn't, but that's just one man's opinion. 6/10, one extra point for the "free-to-play" option. Full Review »
